The directive was issued in response to the virus outbreak in the Thalassery area of the northern Kannur district. The department said that symptoms such as fever, headache, body pain, joint pain, and red eyes should be taken seriously. It urged the public to promptly inform healthcare workers if they notice these symptoms. "If Zika virus symptoms are observed in patients, healthcare providers must give them special attention," the statement said. The statement was issued after a high-level meeting chaired by Health Minister <keyword id="3296362" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Veena-George" source="Orion">Veena George</keyword> held here reviewed the Zika virus cases in Thalassery. Currently, eight Zika virus cases have been confirmed there. The department said if pregnant women are affected by the virus, there is a possibility of birth defects, such as microcephaly, in the unborn baby. Therefore, pregnant women in areas with reported cases of the disease should receive special monitoring, it said. The department directed doctors to conduct separate examinations for pregnant women affected by fever. It said the Zika virus is primarily transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, but it can also be transmitted through blood donation and sexual contact. The department called for an intensification of activities related to mosquito breeding and fogging. They also directed schools, households, and institutions in Kannur district to observe dry days on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to prevent mosquito breeding.

Kerala reports its fifth case of monkeypox

"On the 8th day, an RT-PCR test will have be done and if negative, they will have to continue under self imposed observation," she said. George also said that all the four international airports have gone on high alert and teams will be conducting checking on all arriving passengers. "At the moment, there need not be any worries, but all have to be cautious and careful and arrangements are already in place for isolation of anyone turning positive for the new variant," she said, adding on Tuesday, a detailed meeting, chaired by Chief Minister <keyword id="6356705" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pinarayi-Vijayan" source="Orion">Pinarayi Vijayan</keyword>, will take further stock of the situation. The scare of the new variant comes at a time when Kerala for few months have been registering 50 per cent of the daily new Covid cases in the country and has a similar record of having the total number of active cases. George called on all to take the vaccines and according to the latest figures while 96 per cent of the above 18 aged population have taken the first dose, while 63 per cent have taken both. The easing of the norms was on the cards as the traders' body was up in arms, and with the Onam season round the corner, it was the only way these traders could get the business started again. Announcing the revised lockdown norms, journalist turned State Minister of <keyword id="11789403" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="health-veena-george">Health Veena George</keyword> said the method of locking down was based on the test positivity rate depending on the percentage of Covid patients per 100 population, this however will now be based on cases per 1,000 population. "Henceforth all shops in areas, where triple lockdown norms are not there, can open from 7 in the morning till 9 p.m. From now on only Sunday will be locked down, while Saturday will function as a normal day," said <keyword id="11802" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="George">George</keyword>. For the past nearly three months Kerala was under lockdown based on the test positivity rate and all local bodies with a TPR above 15 per cent were closed down. Incidentally, these new guidelines have come at a time when on Tuesday there were 42,625 new Covid cases in the country of which Kerala reported 23,676 cases. Of 4,10,353 active cases, Kerala had 1,73,221 active cases. George said that the reason for opening up was the economic situation in the state. "Kerala started facing the second wave of Covid and with 56 per cent of the state's population still free from Covid, it's natural we will be reporting more number of daily cases. But when it comes to the death rate Kerala has done well with the death rate standing at 0.5 per cent while the national average is 1.34," said George. She added that one way to tackle Covid is through vaccinating all and Kerala has done well in that aspect also and is waiting for more vaccine supplies. "So far 1.48 crore people have got their first jab, while 62 lakh have received both the doses. And if one looks into the rate of vaccination Kerala has a higher figure than the national average," added George. Kerala government ease COVID-19 norms despite rising daily active cases

Travellers from UK will have to undergo ten-day quarantine at home or destination address, according to the new guidelines. Passengers from South Africa, Brazil, and Europe will have to undergo a seven-day quarantine mandatorily on arrival. The Minister, in a statement, said that all international travellers irrespective of their vaccination status will have to take <keyword id="9043621" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rt-pcr" source="Orion">RT-PCR</keyword> tests on reaching the airports in the state. Travelers from other countries will have to undergo self-monitoring for 14 days if they test negative in RT- PCR test. Samples of passengers from countries like Botswana, the UK, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil, European nations, of the Middle East, Bangladesh, China, Mauritius, and Zimbabwe will be sent for virus mutation tests. The Centre had ordered 10-day mandatory quarantine for passengers arriving from the UK, after it imposed such quarantine measure for Indian visitors. George also said that three RT- PCR tests are required for an international passenger to the state - One prior to 72 hours of the journey, the second on arrival at an airport in the state, and the third eight days after arriving in the state. Kerala to have new quarantine rules for international travellers

"This is the first time that Zika virus has been reported in Kerala... a 24-year-old pregnant woman reported at a hospital in the state capital district with fever, headache and rashes last month. The first results showed a mild <keyword id="2143892" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="positive-sign">positive sign</keyword> of Zika virus and later from 19 samples tested, 13 also showed Zika positive. First Zika virus case detected in Kerala, says state's health minister

On the occasion of International Women's Day on Tuesday, state <keyword id="6354750" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="health" source="Orion">Health</keyword> Minister <keyword id="13327302" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="veena-georgea" source="Orion">Veena Georgea</keyword> will inaugurate a programme to support the first woman ambulance driver in Kerala. Hailing from Kottayam, <keyword id="13327301" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="deepamol" source="Orion">Deepamol</keyword>, will for a change from her regular household chores hold the wheels of a tempo traveller ambulance which belongs to the state government-run ambulance service, 'Kanivu 108'. "This is a huge boost to the confidence of women in Kerala that they can do any job. Deepamol expressed her willingness to become the driver of an ambulance. This idea was taken forward by the CPI(M) government and she ended up becoming teh state's first woman ambulance driver," said George. Deepamol received a driving licence in 2008 and got a licence to drive heavy vehicles in 2009, including tipper lorries besides driving a taxi. She also runs a small driving school. In 2021, she rode on her two-wheeler from Kottayam to Ladakh in 16 days, besides winning an off-road driving contest held at Thrissur. Deepamol has cleared all the driving tests required to drive an ambulance. "Women need not be confined to the kitchen. Instead, they should come forward to pursue any job and need not be dependent on anybody," she said. International Women's Day: Kerala to get first lady ambulance driver

With the samples of four more Covid positive cases getting confirmed for <keyword id="12617922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Omicron-variant" source="Orion">Omicron variant</keyword> on Monday, Kerala now has 15 such cases, said State <keyword id="6356374" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Health-Minister" source="Orion">Health Minister</keyword> Veena George. All the four have been under the close watch of the health authorities and were in quarantine. Hence, there was no reason to suspect a further spread, said the minister. All the four new cases were in the state capital district, and of these three are from the same family. All the 15 cases were reported to be stable. Five more <keyword id="1609796" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="omicron" source="Orion">Omicron</keyword> cases have been detected in Karnataka, which took the overall tally of infections caused by the new Covid-19 variant to 19, state Health Minister K. Sudhakar said on Monday. According to the Minister, the new cases were reported from Dharwad, Bhadravathi, Udupi and Mangaluru districts. Even though the new patients are stable, the health department is on high alert as the new variant has been found among hostel students with no travel history. So far, 49 samples have been sent for genomic sequencing tests and their reports are awaited. According to the State Surveillance Unit Commissionerate of Health and Family Welfare, a 54-year-old fully vaccinated male patient from Dharwad has tested positive for Omicron. His travel history or contact with international travellers is being ascertained, health officials said. His sample was collected on December 4 from DIMHANS in Dharwad after he positive for Covid the previous day. He is currently healthy and is under home isolation. Four of his primary and 133 secondary contacts have been tracked and tested. Their results were negative. Another 20-year-old Omicron positive woman's travel history and contact with international travellers is being ascertained. Her samples were collected on December 4 from a college in Shivamogga district's Bhadravathi town where she is living in a hostel, according to the health officials. As many as 218 of her contacts have been tested and 27 of them were Covid positive. All samples have been sent for Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS). The authorities are also tracing travel or contact history of a 73-year-old man and an 82-year-old man who tested positive for the new variant. Their samples were collected from a private hospital in Udupi. At present they have no Covid-19 symptoms. The youngest member of their family, aged 11 years, has also tested positive. As many as 42 primary contacts and 293 secondary contacts of a 19-year-old Omicron positive college student from Mangaluru, has also been tested. His samples have also been sent for genome sequencing.
