Soter works with hundreds of global companies, including Ikea, Coca-Cola, and DHL.<h2 id="bc0dac62-a766-4d31-bd8a-aae75088db90">Situation analysis: What problem was the company trying to solve?</h2>Many US companies across sectors must comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and other industry-specific regulatory bodies, such as the Federal Aviation Administration.Mike Goetsch, the chief product manager at Soter, told Business Insider that safety managers must be knowledgeable of these regulations and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/america-s-workplace-safety-risks-are-far-too-high-1032908171">ensure their organizations and employees</a> follow them, which can be time-consuming and taxing. The regulations can also be ambiguous and challenging to interpret."Safety teams have a huge workload, but they don't have the bandwidth to tackle these problems at scale throughout a large organization," Goetsch said.Noncompliance can be costly for companies. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.osha.gov/penalties/">OSHA penalties</a> range from $16,121 to $161,323 per violation, depending on the seriousness and frequency of problems. Safety incidents can also lead to production losses, as companies often have to stop production when one happens, he said.In June, Soter launched SoterGenius, an artificial-intelligence platform designed to streamline compliance and inspections for organizations.<h2 id="24b123a5-c599-436e-a90f-ab6c7f5865ff">Key staff and partners</h2>Goetsch said the company developed SoterGenius after learning about clients' <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/childcare-centers-are-behind-on-inspections-2023-10">safety-inspection</a> and audit challenges. Internally, the company tapped its business-development and customer-success managers, as well as its financial, information-technology, security, and privacy teams, to create the platform.<h2 id="f780644e-9a0a-4609-aadd-1a3365dc20cc">AI in action</h2>SoterGenius uses AI-driven image and video analysis, chatbots, and document analysis to automate compliance checks against <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/clarence-thomas-takes-aim-at-osha-2024-7">OSHA guidelines</a> and other industry-specific regulations.Companies can upload photos and videos onto the platform, which quickly identifies violations or hazards, such as workers wearing incorrect personal protective equipment or problems with machinery, Goetsch said.Humans can take anywhere from one to two hours to inspect workplaces. But Goetsch said Soter's AI platform could identify hazards, risks, and violations within about 30 seconds. The tool references the policy being violated and what the penalty could be and offers suggestions for resolving the problem.SoterGenius also includes <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-ai-chatbots-like-chatgpt-work-explainer-2023-7">a chatbot</a> to answer safety managers' questions and direct them to specific OSHA provisions. The tool is constantly updated with the latest regulations.Goetsch told BI the AI platform removes the ambiguity and human error that can occur with applying safety regulations.<h2 id="79604485-84ee-4d6a-aad7-26a0b852cbce">Did it work?</h2>Soter said about 90 companies were using SoterGenius, including Delta Air Lines, Ramp Health, Boston Children's Hospital, and the insurance brokerage Marsh.While it's too soon to share data on how the platform is directly helping companies, Goetsch said testing found that it could review and analyze a 15,000-word policy manual in 25 seconds, compared with 75 minutes for a human. Its testing found the tool has a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/anthropic-cofounder-says-ai-errors-are-necessary-tradeoff-2024-2">99% accuracy rate</a> in analyzing photos and videos for safety compliance."Things that would have taken hours are now taking seconds," he said.For example, Goetsch said one company using SoterGenius recently purchased electric forklifts and installed charging stations. Photos uploaded onto the platform showed that the stations weren't installed correctly and were fire hazards. Goetsch said the program helped the organization quickly identify and fix the problem, which allowed it to avoid an OSHA penalty.<h2 id="8464e979-6fde-4cb4-b669-0c46466adddf">What's next?</h2>Soter's clients have access to SoterGenius, but Goetsch said the company was working to sign up new organizations. He said the goal was to continue advancing the technology, such as by enabling continuous workplace analysis via video streaming or safety managers wearing <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-glass">smart glasses</a>.Ultimately, he said, he hopes the technology will make it easier for safety managers or even people without a safety background to perform inspections and audits, which would ensure a safer workplace and perhaps save organizations tens of thousands of dollars.We want to hear from you. How Soter Analytics uses AI to assess hazards, risks, and violations for 90 companies

If you woke up in <keyword id="19900881" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi" source="keywords">Delhi</keyword> recently, you might have noticed more than just the nip in the air – a thick, toxic smog has blanketed the city, turning the air almost unbreathable. On Monday, Delhi’s <keyword id="19920379" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-quality-index" source="keywords">Air Quality Index</keyword> (<keyword id="19916482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aqi" source="keywords">AQI</keyword>) hit 481, placing it in the "severe plus" category. For context, the “severe” category begins at an AQI of 401, and anything above 450 poses serious health risks even for healthy individuals. According to Swiss group IQAir’s live rankings, Delhi is currently the most polluted city in the world, with an air quality score of 1,081 – a “hazardous” level that is 130.9 times the World Health Organization’s recommended limit for PM2.5. <h3 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:14pt;margin-bottom:4pt;">Major contributors to Delhi’s smog</h3>The root causes of Delhi’s pollution are manifold: <ul><li>Stubble Burning: On Saturday, crop residue burning contributed 25% of Delhi’s air pollution. By Sunday, this figure had climbed to 40%, according to SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research). Satellites recorded 1,334 stubble-burning incidents in six northern states on Sunday alone, the highest number in four days.</li><li>Vehicles: On Sunday, vehicular emissions accounted for 15.8% of the city’s pollution, according to the Centre’s Decision Support System for Air Quality Management.</li><li>Construction Dust and Industrial Emissions: PM2.5, a deadly pollutant, remains the most prominent factor, capable of penetrating deep into the lungs and leading to severe respiratory and cardiac diseases.</li></ul><h3 style="line-height:1.38;margin-top:14pt;margin-bottom:4pt;"><keyword id="24020184" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GRAP-Stage-4" source="keywords">GRAP Stage 4</keyword></h3>To combat the rising pollution levels, authorities have enforced Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). To combat the issue, authorities implemented a series of emergency measures through the <keyword id="19920169" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="graded-response-action-plan" source="keywords">Graded Response Action Plan</keyword> (GRAP), including bans on diesel generators and regular sprinkling of roadways. These chemicals, some of which are hazardous, are finding their way into the food we consume, sparking calls for more research and stricter regulations. <h2>Chemicals we don’t know enough about</h2>Of the thousands of chemicals identified, around 100 are classified as being of “high concern” for <keyword id="20060201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="human-health" source="keywords">human health</keyword>. These chemicals can also enter the food chain from other parts of the food-making process, such as conveyor belts and kitchen utensils. The study originally catalogued about 14,000 FCCs, but researchers were astonished to find 3,601 of them present in human biomonitoring databases, which track chemicals found in human tissues and fluids. This unexpected result underscores how pervasive these substances are. <h2>High concern: PFAS, BPA and Phthalates </h2>Among the most troubling chemicals are the PFAS, which have gained notoriety as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down easily in the environment or the human body. These chemicals have been linked to a host of health issues, including immune system suppression, developmental problems, and various cancers. Bisphenol A (BPA), a well-known endocrine disruptor used in the production of plastics, is another substance of concern. BPA can interfere with the body’s hormone systems, particularly oestrogen, and has been associated with fertility problems, breast cancer, and developmental disorders in children. Phthalates, another group of hormone-disrupting chemicals, are used to make plastics more flexible. Duane Mellor, a specialist in evidence-based medicine at Aston University in the UK, praised the study for being thorough but cautioned against panic. Instead, he encouraged consumers to advocate for stronger regulations on <keyword id="21364182" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="chemicals-in-food" source="keywords">chemicals in food</keyword> packaging. "Rather than being unduly alarmed, people should demand better data and minimise unnecessary exposure," Mellor said. To reduce exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals, Geueke recommended simple measures like reducing the time food spends in contact with packaging and avoiding heating food in the containers it comes in. Many of these chemicals migrate more easily into food when heated, making microwaving plastic containers or takeout packaging a common source of contamination. <h2>The regulatory response </h2>Some chemicals are already facing bans. The European Union is in the final stages of banning the use of PFAS in food packaging, and a similar ban on bisphenol A is expected to come into effect by the end of this year. As more research emerges, governments around the world may follow the EU's lead in implementing stricter controls on these hazardous chemicals, protecting consumers from hidden dangers in their everyday meals. Mobile phones - and wireless tech more broadly - are a major part of our daily lives. So it's been vital for science to address the safety of radio wave exposure from these devices. Over the years, the scientific consensus has remained strong - there's no association between mobile phone radio waves and brain cancer, or health more generally. The study, which was conducted by Sarah Loughran, who is Director, Radiation Research and Advice, Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA), and Ken Karipidis, Assistant Director, Health Impact Assessment, ARPANSA, delved into the potential <keyword id="21194036" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="health-effects" source="keywords">health effects</keyword> from radio wave exposure, and has shown mobile phones are not linked to brain cancer. <h2>Radiation as a possible carcinogen</h2> Despite the consensus, occasional research studies have been published that suggested the possibility of harm. In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified radio wave exposure as a possible carcinogen to humans. The meaning of this classification was largely misunderstood and led to some increase in concern. IARC is part of the World Health Organisation. Its classification of radio waves as a possible carcinogen was largely based on limited evidence from human observational studies. Also known as epidemiological studies, they observe the rate of disease and how it may be caused in human populations. Observational studies are the best tool researchers have to investigate long-term health effects in humans, but the results can often be biased. The IARC classification relied on previous observational studies where people with brain cancer reported they used a mobile phone more than they actually did. One example of this is known as the INTERPHONE study. This new systematic review of human observational studies is based on a much larger data set compared to what the IARC examined in 2011. It includes more recent and more comprehensive studies. This means we can now be more confident that exposure to radio waves from mobile phones or <keyword id="22150173" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wireless-technologies" source="keywords">wireless technologies</keyword> is not associated with an increased risk of brain cancer, the paper noted. <h2>No association</h2> The new review forms part of a series of systematic reviews commissioned by the World Health Organisation to look more closely at possible health effects associated with exposure to radio waves. This systematic review provides the strongest evidence to date that radio waves from wireless technologies are not a hazard to human health. It is the most comprehensive review on this topic - it considered more than 5,000 studies, of which 63, published between 1994 and 2022, were included in the final analysis. The main reason studies were excluded was that they were not actually relevant; this is very normal with search results from systematic reviews. No association between mobile phone use and brain cancer, or any other head or neck cancer, was found. There was also no association with cancer if a person used a mobile phone for ten or more years (prolonged use). How often they used it - either based on the number of calls or the time spent on the phone - also didn't make a difference. Importantly, these findings align with previous research. It shows that, although the use of wireless technologies has massively increased in the past few decades, there has been no rise in the incidence of brain cancers. <h2>A good thing</h2> Overall, the results are very reassuring. They mean that our national and international safety limits are protective. Mobile phones emit low-level radio waves below these safety limits, and there is no evidence exposure to these has an impact on human health, said the study. Despite this, it is important that research continues. Technology is developing at a rapid pace. With this development comes the use of radio waves in different ways using different frequencies. It is therefore essential that science continues to ensure radio wave exposure from these technologies remains safe. The challenge we now face is making sure this new research counteracts the persistent misconceptions and misinformation out there regarding mobile phones and brain cancer. There remains no evidence of any established health effects from exposures related to mobile phones, and that is a good thing.
