The Election Commission has declared results for all 543 Lok Sabha constituencies, with the BJP winning 240 seats and the Congress 99. "Despite the reduced majority, we expect the policy agenda of Modi 2.0 (investment-led growth, capex, infrastructure creation, manufacturing, etc.) to continue, although with some tweaks. We also expect some populist measures to address rural stress and lift sentiments at the margin, given the nature of the verdict," as per a report by Motilal Oswal Research. Among the 30 Sensex companies, Hindustan Unilever, Nestle, Asian Paints, HCL Technologies, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and ITC were the biggest gainers. The 50-DEMA (Days exponential moving average) is placed near 22,390, and the 100-DEMA is placed near 22,000 levels. Capital market analysts said <keyword id="19935977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance-companies" source="keywords">insurance companies</keyword> make money in two ways - charging premiums for policies and then investing the premiums into assets. It is the latter that generates the bigger delta in profits, thus impacting value creation and managing risks. Global majors, including Warren Buffet-owned Berkshire Hathaway, have been successful due to their ability to make superior investments. Most Indian insurance companies are yet to capitalise on the emergence of the country's <keyword id="19997284" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="infrastructure-sector" source="keywords">infrastructure sector</keyword>, analysts said. Indian insurance companies have concentrated investments in the BFSI, IT, and consumer sectors - all of which have been underperformers in the recent past. Only 8-10% of their investments are in the infrastructure sector. This is far less when compared to global standards. Large global insurance companies -- such as Allianz, Nippon Life Insurance, and Metlife, and other insurers like Berkshire Hathaway -- have much larger exposure ranging from 15 to 30% to the infrastructure sector, analysts noted. Over the past few years, global insurers have been increasingly considering infrastructure investments as 'core' investments as the stable and long-term cash flows of infrastructure assets naturally align with the liabilities of insurers. Additionally, infrastructure assets have defensive characteristics of high barriers to entry, strong pricing power, structural growth, and predictive cash flows, and listed infrastructure can provide investors with inflation-protected income and solid capital growth. <h2>Infra sector outperforming all</h2>For India, a strong government focus on the sector with large spending, supporting initiatives and encouraging policies, and improving governance has helped the infrastructure industry has come of age. This has helped the infra sector to outperform all other sectors, according to analysts. They said the high focus on retail loans, and the strategic reluctance to look at infrastructure for growth opportunities is proving detrimental for the shareholders of such companies. SBI, with its higher exposure to the infrastructure sector, has seen its stock gain 48% in the year (from Rs 592 to Rs 880.95 on Tuesday), while those of its private counterparts HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank have gained only in the range of (-)3%to 24%. Kotak and HDFC Banks with negligible exposure to the infrastructure sector are the worst performing, with their shares giving a negative return, stock exchange data showed. Kotak Mahindra Bank shares were at Rs 1,895 on June 18, 2023, and closed at Rs 1,805.20 on Tuesday. HDFC Bank closed at Rs 1,619.20 on BSE on Tuesday, down from Rs 1,679 a year back.

Exposure to India's infra sector helps LIC, SBI outshine peers

The Nifty touched a record high at 25,174.55 and Sensex rose to 82,220.68. The indices opened almost flat with a mixed response from both indices in the opening hour. The Nifty at the National <keyword id="19976022" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock" source="keywords">Stock</keyword> Exchange (NSE) opened 17 points down at 25,035.30 points. The BSE Sensex opened with a minor gain of 35 points at 81,822.56. "Finally, it (Nifty) has broken through to fresh all-time highs. This opens up possibilities for a strong upmove now. Sector-wise, domestic cyclical will lead the way while IT is coming back in favour of selective names," said Ajay Bagga, <keyword id="19913381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market" source="keywords">Market</keyword> and Banking expert. "The markets have weathered the geopolitical news flow, the disorderly Yen carry trade unwinding moves, and the minor panic on an incipient US slowdown leading to a hard landing. These issues have been digested and factored in and FII flows have improved over the last few days to add to the robust domestic inflows. The structural bull market is back and we expect further upside in the markets," said Bagga. "While Nifty is trading at 23x its actual value, many heavyweight stocks like HDFC and Reliance are still trading below their all-time highs. "Despite this bullish trend, I would suggest <keyword id="19900618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investors" source="keywords">investors</keyword> to be cautious. Moreover, the NIFTY index is currently in an overbought zone, with RSI levels indicating a potential correction in the next 3-6 months. I would advise all investors to focus on dip-buying opportunities and avoid FOMO. Lastly, stick to stocks with strong fundamentals, as overvalued prices won't sustain in the long run," she said. Later this week, the markets will be reading the first quarter <keyword id="19904293" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GDP" source="keywords">GDP</keyword> data which is scheduled on Friday. The Reserve Bank of India, in its latest monetary policy meeting, projected GDP growth for 2024-25 at 7.2 per cent, with growth for Q1 expected at 7.1 per cent. India's GDP grew by an impressive 8.2 per cent during the financial year 2023-24, continuing to be the fastest-growing major economy. The Nifty 50 index began on April 22, 1996, with a starting value of 1136.28 points and has crossed the 25,100 milestone today, marking a growth of nearly 22 times.

During the day, it nosedived 1,699.47 points or 2.32 per cent to 71,429.30. The market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies eroded by Rs 4,59,327.64 crore to Rs 3,70,35,933.18 crore. In two days of market fall, investors' wealth fell by Rs 5,73,576.83 crore. "Hawkish comments by the <keyword id="19951097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-fed" source="keywords">US Fed</keyword> triggered a spike in yields on the US 10-year bonds and the US dollar index, which spooked European and Asian markets, including India. India's <keyword id="6357440" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-market" source="Orion">stock market</keyword> valuations are also expensively valued compared to other global stock indices and investors would wait for more positive cues now to extend their equity exposure. "There are challenges in the near-term such as persisting conflict in the Middle East and worries over delay in the US Fed rate cut, which could dampen investors' sentiment going ahead," said <keyword id="20226500" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="prashanth-tapse" source="keywords">Prashanth Tapse</keyword>, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd. Tata Steel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, JSW Steel, <keyword id="19950210" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bajaj-finserv" source="keywords">Bajaj Finserv</keyword>, State Bank of India and IndusInd Bank were among the other major laggards. HCL Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Titan, Nestle and PowerGrid were the gainers. "Domestic equities plunged amid a weak environment globally and a selloff in HDFC Bank. Banking sector took the biggest hit as Q3 results of HDFC Bank showed stagnant growth for the company. Hawkish Fed commentary, escalating tension in the Middle East, and a spike in bond yield dented investor sentiment," said <keyword id="20063732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="siddhartha-khemka" source="keywords">Siddhartha Khemka</keyword>, Head - Retail Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd. In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong settled lower. European markets were also trading with sharp cuts. The US markets ended in negative territory on Tuesday. In the broader market, the BSE midcap gauge fell by 1.09 per cent and smallcap index declined 0.90 per cent. Among the indices, bankex tumbled 4.02 per cent, financial services fell by 3.76 per cent, metal (2.86 per cent), commodities (2.31 per cent), telecommunication (1.94 per cent) and realty (1.47 per cent). IT, consumer durables and teck were the gainers. As many as 2,510 stocks declined, while 1,301 advanced and 89 remained unchanged.
