Shares of state-owned behemoth Life Insurance Corporation (<keyword id="19903588" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LIC" source="keywords">LIC</keyword>) have outperformed rivals like <keyword id="20079495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="HDFC-Life" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="HDFC Life" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="HDFC Life">HDFC Life</keyword> and <keyword id="21278696" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-Prudential-Life" source="keywords">ICICI Prudential Life</keyword>, as it placed bets on India's growth sectors, including infrastructure, while the private sector concentrated its bets on tech, consumer and consumer-related <keyword id="19910880" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BFSI" source="keywords">BFSI</keyword> companies. LIC's stock has gained nearly 79% from Rs 620 on June 18, 2023, to Rs 1,109.15 at the closing on Tuesday, according to stock exchange data. In contrast, HDFC Life gave a negative return with Tuesday's closing price of Rs 646.55 on the BSE as compared to Rs 666.55 a year back. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co delivered a return of 12%, considering its stock price rise from Rs 582 on June 18, 2023, to Rs 654.10 on June 16, 2024. Over the past one year, <keyword id="19898108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SBI" source="keywords">SBI</keyword> Life Insurance shares have risen from Rs 1,314 to Rs 1,621.20, delivering a return of 23%. Capital market analysts said <keyword id="19935977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance-companies" source="keywords">insurance companies</keyword> make money in two ways - charging premiums for policies and then investing the premiums into assets. It is the latter that generates the bigger delta in profits, thus impacting value creation and managing risks. Global majors, including Warren Buffet-owned Berkshire Hathaway, have been successful due to their ability to make superior investments. Most Indian insurance companies are yet to capitalise on the emergence of the country's <keyword id="19997284" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="infrastructure-sector" source="keywords">infrastructure sector</keyword>, analysts said. Indian insurance companies have concentrated investments in the BFSI, IT, and consumer sectors - all of which have been underperformers in the recent past. Only 8-10% of their investments are in the infrastructure sector. This is far less when compared to global standards. Large global insurance companies -- such as Allianz, Nippon Life Insurance, and Metlife, and other insurers like Berkshire Hathaway -- have much larger exposure ranging from 15 to 30% to the infrastructure sector, analysts noted. Over the past few years, global insurers have been increasingly considering infrastructure investments as 'core' investments as the stable and long-term cash flows of infrastructure assets naturally align with the liabilities of insurers. Additionally, infrastructure assets have defensive characteristics of high barriers to entry, strong pricing power, structural growth, and predictive cash flows, and listed infrastructure can provide investors with inflation-protected income and solid capital growth. <h2>Infra sector outperforming all</h2>For India, a strong government focus on the sector with large spending, supporting initiatives and encouraging policies, and improving governance has helped the infrastructure industry has come of age. This has helped the infra sector to outperform all other sectors, according to analysts. They said the high focus on retail loans, and the strategic reluctance to look at infrastructure for growth opportunities is proving detrimental for the shareholders of such companies. SBI, with its higher exposure to the infrastructure sector, has seen its stock gain 48% in the year (from Rs 592 to Rs 880.95 on Tuesday), while those of its private counterparts HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank have gained only in the range of (-)3%to 24%. Kotak and HDFC Banks with negligible exposure to the infrastructure sector are the worst performing, with their shares giving a negative return, stock exchange data showed. Kotak Mahindra Bank shares were at Rs 1,895 on June 18, 2023, and closed at Rs 1,805.20 on Tuesday. HDFC Bank closed at Rs 1,619.20 on BSE on Tuesday, down from Rs 1,679 a year back.

Exposure to India's infra sector helps LIC, SBI outshine peers

<ul><li>In the last two years, interest rates on loans have gone up by 1.9% – undoing the <keyword id="6357050" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EMI" source="Orion">EMI</keyword> mathematics of most borrowers. </li><li>Most experts predict that there are more rate hikes coming as early as December. </li><li>For auto and <keyword id="35519" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="home-loans" source="Orion">home loans</keyword>, borrowers can consider extending their tenures if the burden is higher. </li></ul>Be prepared to pay more interest if you want to borrow to buy a home or a car. The era of low interest rates has formally ended, with the Reserve Bank of India kicking off its rate hike cycle in May. The repo rate or the rate at which central banks lend to banks has risen by 1.9% after four consecutive hikes. That means EMIs will only go up making it costlier for borrowers. While existing borrowers of home loans may see their tenures go up, equated monthly installments (EMIs) of personal loans and <keyword id="35527" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="auto-loans" source="Orion">auto loans</keyword> will rise further after today’s 50 basis point rate hike. "The Reserve Bank of India has hiked the repo rate by 50 basis points. This marks the fourth consecutive rise in the repo rate, bringing it to 5.9%. This will definitely impact the new and existing borrowers. However, this decision has been made to curb the rising inflation. With India’s inflation rate being 7%, the value of the currency might fall without the intervention of the RBI in order to try and sustain it and bring it down," said HP Singh, chairman &amp; managing director of Satin Creditcare Network. Home loans Let’s look at home loans first. If you have ₹50 lakh outstanding with a bank at an 8.5% interest rate spread across 20 years, the effective EMI you have is at ₹43,391. However, if the 50 basis point hike is passed on to the loan, the EMI will go up to ₹44,986 – an effective increase of ₹595 per month. For every one lakh of home loan for this tenure, the EMI will go up by ₹32. Auto loans The net impact is different for auto loans where the tenures are shorter but interest rates are different. For example if you have a ₹10 lakh auto loan at around 8.6% interest rate for a tenure of seven years, your EMI has been at ₹15,887. Again, in the changed interest rate regime, it would come up to ₹16,140 every month – an effective increase of ₹253. For every lakh of an auto loan for the said tenure, the EMI will go up by ₹25. Personal loans For a personal loan that’s spread across two years, the EMI for a ₹3 lakh loan at 11.4% would be at ₹14,038. After an interest rate reset, it would go up to ₹14,108 — an effective increase of ₹70. Increasing loan tenure? In the last two years, interest rates on loans have gone up by 1.9% – undoing the EMI mathematics of most borrowers. For auto and home loans, borrowers can consider extending their tenures if the burden is higher. However, it is to be noted that extending tenures will increase the interest payable across the years — and especially for large loans like home loans, the net payable will balloon correspondingly. The other factors that play a role in tenure extension would be the borrower’s age – while younger borrowers can afford it, most people must clear off long term loans before retirement age of 60. More hikes ahead? When he announced the rate hikes today, RBI governor <keyword id="6359111" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="Orion">Shaktikanta Das</keyword> said that the consumer price inflation is still above the central bank’s tolerance level. “Going forward, the RBI will remain vigilant, agile and nimble in its liquidity management operations and would use all instruments at its disposal to mitigate the spillovers of global financial market volatility on domestic financial markets,” said Das. It means going ahead, there could be more rate hikes on the horizon and a lot of experts predict that too. “We continue to expect another 35 bps hike in December followed by a pause with the RBI assessing Fed actions, and impact of past rate hikes on domestic growth and inflation,” said Suvodeep Rakshit, senior economist at Kotak Institutional Equities. Those who have banked on low interest rates offered during the pandemic to take home loans, might have to adjust their monthly math — but the burden of growing interest is what most people across the world have been dealing with and partial prepayments will help if it can be afforded. Since more rate hikes might be coming, it would be a good idea to pay off personal loans if possible as they can get costlier. Here is how much your EMI will go up after the recent repo rate hike

On November 12, the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) <a href="https://www.rbiretaildirect.org.in/">opened up a portal</a> through which small investors can directly buy government bonds. Since then, the Nifty Bank, the index of banking stocks, on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) has lost nearly 7% of its value. One could argue that a larger sell-off in Indian stocks is at play but banks have been the worst hit among all sectoral indices. Three straight weekly declines in the stocks of some of the country’s biggest lenders ⁠has led to huge wealth erosion. Private banking giants like ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and the government-owned State Bank of India (SBI) are some of the most common names in mutual fund portfolios. Aside from the compulsions of the traders who rely on signals on the charts alone, there are some fundamental fears at play too. As it stands today, retail investors can get better long-term returns as well as a wider protection by directly investing in government bonds compared to fixed deposits at banks. Bank deposits are insured by the government up to an amount of ₹5 lakh whereas the entire amount invested in government bonds are guaranteed by the sovereign. And, the returns are relatively exciting too. The returns on some small savings schemes ⁠— some of the long-term ones even offer tax incentives ⁠— offered by the government had already outpaced bank rates. Direct investments, unlike going via debt funds, can reduce expense ratios. </td></tr></tbody></table> No wonder, reports suggest that big ticket investors like <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/bonds/retail-bond-scheme-draws-strong-interest-from-nris/articleshow/87838650.cms">non-resident Indians</a> are getting wooed by the latest option of directly investing in government securities, which come with higher returns (compared to other fixed income products), a certainty in cash flow and without costs and commissions, and sovereign guarantee for the entire capital. The process may be a bit cumbersome for those without adequate patience for the infamous interfaces of India’s government websites. If the banks have to compete for deposits, the cost of funds will rise and eat into the profit margin. But that’s not the entire story For India’s banks, credit growth has improved but it is still far from the desired pace. Large corporations have still not ramped up investments and, therefore, borrowings have been tepid. This caps the lender’s ability to increase lending rates to cover the cost. Bank loans to industry at the end of September were lesser compared to six months earlier, according to RBI data. Most of India’s large companies and conglomerates are still in the process of repaying old loans and strengthening their balance sheets. Meanwhile, the growth in deposits moderated marginally to 10.1% in the 12 months to September, compared to 11% a year ago. These are a few points to consider for individual investors, including non-resident Indians, who are considering direct investments into India’s government bonds: Not all government securities are liquid. According to market watchers, only about 15 out of the 90 bonds available in the market are traded actively. The market is, currently, dominated by banks and institutional investors. Buying directly will be far easier than selling (before maturity) for smaller lots. After three years of holding, the return on investment in government securities via debt mutual funds is eligible for indexation (adjusting the cost to include impact of inflation) benefit while calculating capital gains. Direct investments are not eligible for the same. However, debt funds come with expenses which direct investments are free of. The money invested in these bonds now may lose its sheen once the interest rates start rising. Analysts at Goldman Sachs expect RBI to hike interest rates by 75 basis points in 2022. However, for now, there is enough headroom before the bank rates come at par with the bond yields. Banks in India may have to fight harder for deposits

While the company’s net profit declined marginally to ₹ 5,310 crore from ₹5,669 crore same time last year, Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) saw a 181% growth in individual loan disbursement in June quarter 2021. "HDFC surprised the street with almost steady asset quality performance during a quarter when most peers in housing as well as other asset finance sectors have reported a significant rise in stressed loans," said Kotak Institutional Equities in its report dated August 3. <div type="image" title="HDFC net profit revenue" height="900" width="1200" msid="84972826" hostid="261"></div> Home loan disbursement refers to the release of the credit amount by the bank or financial institution to the borrower. “While disbursements during April and May of the current financial year were somewhat impacted, business has reverted to normalised trends in the months of June and July,” said the company while announcing its June quarter results. This is a trend that has continued for the last few quarters with exceptions in the month of April and May 2021 when the second wave of the pandemic struck. The pandemic made it worse and, despite steady cuts in benchmark interest rates by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the recovery has been slow, to put it mildly. According to latest data from property consultants at Anarock, over 1.74 lakh under-construction homes ⁠— estimated to be worth over ₹1.4 lakh crore (about $20 billion) are stuck across the top seven cities in India. These projects were launched before 2014 but have not been completed since. The total number of properties under construction in India exceeds 626,000. Even HDFC’s earnings statement noted that people preferred ready-to-move properties compared to those under construction. Many of those who have taken home loans are also struggling to repay. India’s largest home loan provider HDFC has given real estate stocks another reason to rally

And the situation is unlikely to improve until the end of the year, analysts say. Amid the ongoing weakness in the sector, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have also sold their stakes in IT companies. FPIs turned bearish on the IT and oil and gas sector in March – between these two sectors, they <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/fpis-offload-it-oil-gas-stocks-worth-13734-crore-in-march/articleshow/99375107.cms">sold equities worth ₹13,734 crore. </a> Analysts expect pain to continue till end of 2023 Considering the macro economic challenges like high inflation, interest rates and banking crisis in the US and European regions, analysts expect it will be a watchful few quarters for the IT sector. "The biggest issue in the IT sector is growth slowdown and possibility of recession. So, as long as the slowdown persists and global growth remains uncertain, the market will expect lesser order flow, slower execution and pricing challenges. All these three factors will lead to IT companies suffering and valuations may also not expand. Investors will have to remain watchful for one to two quarters till there is some clarity on the global growth scenario," Deepak Jasani, head of retail research at HDFC Securities told Business Insider India. The IT majors’ recently-posted fourth-quarter results and FY24 growth predictions tell their own story about the sector’s ongoing struggles. For FY23, IT major Infosys reported a growth of 15.4% in constant currency terms, lower than the guidance of 16-16.5% that it had given <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/corporates/news/infosys-results-q3-fy23-infosys-raises-revenue-guidance-for-fy23-to-16-16-5/articleshow/96941824.cms">at the end of Q3</a>. Besides, it guided for a 4-7% revenue growth in FY24. This is the first time since FY16 that Infosys has guided for single-digit revenue growth in constant currency terms. Bigger rival Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a 11-quarter low constant currency revenue growth at $7.2 billion in Q4. TCS’ outgoing chief executive officer Rajesh Gopinathan said in a post-earnings conference that the company is seeing stress in one of its largest markets, North America. The recovery that the company had expected had not yet materialised. According to Sanjeev Hota, vice president, head of research at Sharekhan BNP Paribas, told Business Insider India, the macro uncertainty faced by the sector is unlikely to get better before 2-3 quarters. “(For) the entire calendar year, things look dicey and the industry may witness some kind of stability by the fag end of this year. US, North America, which are among the biggest markets for the sector, are not expected to improve in the near term." Banking crisis could impact June-quarter earnings The global growth slowdown has worked its way into the stock market performance of these companies with shares of the entire IT pack being beaten down significantly in 2023. The Nifty IT index is down 30% so far this year compared to a 3% fall in the broader Nifty50 index. The IT companies in India faced the heat after the banking crisis in the US and Europe erupted in March, triggered by the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in the US and the turmoil at Swiss lender Credit Suisse. IT majors like TCS, Infosys and Wipro have also neared their 52-week low since March considering IT companies’ exposure to US banks amid the banking sector crisis. BFSI clients are among the Indian IT companies’ largest clients. "Most of the price damage in the IT stocks has already been done. However, outperformance of the sector from the current level seems restricted till global macro headwinds stabilises. The sector valuation multiple is driven by earnings growth and if growth tapers off, there are little chances of the (IT) stocks outperforming the broader market indices,” added Hota. He, however, recommends staggered buying in TCS among the large caps and Persistent Systems from the mid-cap stocks, for long-term investors. The lower-than-expected growth in March quarter for sector leaders Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys and HCL Technologies have underlined the ongoing slowdown. And analysts see this spilling over to the next quarter as well. “The banking crisis in US regional banks and European banks in March 2023 has induced greater caution and could impact the June 2023 quarter. We would not be surprised by a weak US performance across companies that are likely to report in the coming days,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Analysts at JP Morgan have also highlighted the weakness in banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) and telecom verticals, which would impact Tech Mahindra and Mphasis as they have high exposure to these verticals. In terms of sectors, the highest allocation is to companies focussed on infrastructure construction. This may be a bet on government's willingness to spend more of taxpayers' money to boost economic growth. The zero weightage given to telecom may reflect the battered prospects of the sector amidst intense competition, piled up debt, and the imminent pressure of having to bid for 5G spectrum when the auction opens up in the coming weeks. Some stocks like ICICI Bank and Axis Bank are expected to more than double their profits in the next couple but that is largely due to the low-base effect in the last financial, which was marred by rising bad loans and provisions. The return to normalcy may look better when compared to the performance last year. The three IT stocks -- HCL Tech, Mphasis, and Tech Mahindra-- are expected to give the highest return on equity, above 20% each, according to the estimates in the model portfolio of stocks. This model portfolio may give one a perspective on how to invest their surplus profitably.
