The country's biggest private sector lender had earned a <keyword id="19942166" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="net-profit" source="keywords">net profit</keyword> of Rs 15,976 crore in the same quarter a year ago. Total income increased to Rs 85,500 crore during the quarter under review against Rs 78,406 crore in the same period last year, HDFC Bank said in a regulatory filing. The bank reported <keyword id="20202322" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interest-income" source="keywords">interest income</keyword> of Rs 74,017 crore during the quarter compared to Rs 67,698 crore in the same period a year ago. Net Interest Income (NII) improved to Rs 30,110 crore, from Rs 27,390 crore in the second quarter of previous year, registering a 10 per cent growth. As regards asset quality, the bank witnessed slight deterioration with gross <keyword id="19927319" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Non-Performing-Assets" source="keywords">Non-Performing Assets</keyword> (NPAs) rising to 1.36 per cent of the gross loans by the end of September 2024 from 1.34 per cent a year ago. Similarly, net NPAs or bad loans rose to 0.41 per cent from 0.35 per cent at the end of the second quarter of the previous fiscal. On a consolidated basis, the bank logged a growth of 6 per cent in net profit to Rs 17,826 crore as against Rs Rs 16,811 crore in Q2FY24. HDFC Bank Q2 profit soars 5% to ₹16,821 crore

Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

"In Tuesday's trade, FIIs were net sellers of ₹5,579 crore, while crude oil prices surged above $70 per barrel amid escalating tensions in the Middle East," said Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd. Sensex, Nifty pare early gains, trade lower in the afternoon trade

New Delhi: As the earnings season for the second quarter of FY25 unfolds, <keyword id="19959986" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-sector-banks" source="keywords">public sector banks</keyword> (PSBs) are expected to see a slight dip in profits compared to the previous quarter, according to a report by <keyword id="19896146" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Motilal-Oswal" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Motilal Oswal" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Motilal Oswal">Motilal Oswal</keyword>. The report estimates that PSBs' Profit After Tax (PAT) will decline by 0.6 per cent quarter-on-quarter (QoQ), while showing a stronger year-on-year (YoY) growth of 17.2 per cent. "We estimate PSBs to report moderate <keyword id="19899597" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="earnings-growth" source="keywords">earnings growth</keyword> of 17.2 pc YoY/ a decline of 0.6 pc QoQ in 2QFY25," the report stated. The slower pace of growth can be attributed to flat net interest margins (NIMs) and a slight increase in loan loss provisions (LLP). The <keyword id="20171160" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Net-Interest-Income" source="keywords">Net Interest Income</keyword> (NII) for PSBs is expected to grow by around 6 per cent YoY, although interest margins are likely to remain under pressure. Despite these near-term challenges, the report suggests that public sector banks are on track to post a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15 per cent between FY24 and FY26, pointing to sustained long-term growth. In the private sector banking space, the report forecasts mixed results for the same quarter. For private banks under the coverage, Pre-Provision Operating Profit (PPoP) is expected to grow by 12 per cent YoY and 1 per cent QoQ. However, PAT growth is predicted to be more modest, increasing by 5 per cent YoY and 0.6 per cent QoQ. "For our private bank coverage universe, we estimate a PPoP growth of 12 pc YoY/1 pc QoQ and a PAT growth of 5 pc YoY/0.6 pc QoQ in 2QFY25," the report added. Looking ahead, private sector banks are expected to experience steady profitability growth, with earnings projected to grow at a CAGR of 12.4 per cent over FY24-FY26. Overall, while both public and private sector banks may face moderate growth in the second quarter due to margin pressures and higher provisions, their long-term earnings prospects remain positive. Profit of public sector banks expected to decline by 0.6 percent QoQ : Motilala Oswal

The <keyword id="21570567" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="credit-offtake" source="keywords">credit offtake</keyword> continued to grow at the rate of 13.9% year-on-year to reach Rs. 168.1 lakh crore for the fortnight ending July 12, 2024. However, the pace of growth was slow, a Care Edge report said. Credit offtake is a type of <keyword id="19946069" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bank-credit" source="keywords">bank credit</keyword> that assists businesses in getting financing for future projects. The credit offtake increased by 14.0% year-on-year, but declined by 0.4% sequentially for the fortnight ended July 12, 2024. Over the last twelve months, credit offtake expanded by Rs. 20.4 lakh crore. The report attributed the sluggishness to the higher base effect and banks' focus on restraining the credit-to-deposit (CD) ratio. <keyword id="20218853" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deposits" source="keywords">Deposits</keyword> grew by 11.3 % year-on-year for the fortnight, including the impact of the HDFC merger, reaching Rs. 211.8 lakh crore, driven by growth in time deposits. "The <keyword id="20575555" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-to-deposit" source="keywords">Credit to Deposit</keyword> ratio stood at 79.4 % for the fortnight (July 12, 2024). Meanwhile, if we study the credit and deposit inflows over the past 3 months and 6 months, we can observe that credit offtake has lagged the deposit growth numbers. Hence, the <keyword id="20048508" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CD-ratio" source="keywords">CD ratio</keyword> derived from these flows from January would be around 70% and from March would be approximately 54%," the report added. The report added that going forward, bank credit offtake could face challenges, and is likely to be tepid for the entire year. Inflows over the past three and six months show credit offtake at 5.3% for six months and 2.3% for three months, lagging behind deposit growths of 6.0% and 3.4% respectively. Deposits rose by 11.3% year-on-year for the fortnight, but declined by 0.5 % sequentially. In absolute terms, deposits expanded by Rs. 23.9 lakh crore over the last twelve months. The report anticipated that the deposit is expected to be strong in FY25, as banks focus on strengthening their liability franchise, sourcing funds through certificates of deposit, despite higher costs. As per the data in the report, the absolute growth in credit offtake was Rs. 8.4 lakh crore for six months, and Rs. 3.8 lakh crore for three months, lagging behind deposit growth of Rs. 11.9 lakh crore and Rs. 7.0 lakh crore for the same periods. The CD ratio has floated around 80 % since September 2023, standing at 79.4 % for the fortnight ending July 12, 2024, as per the report.

That's up 24% from the same period in 2023. What's more, deals valued at greater than $10 billion were recently up 39% compared with the same period last year.The number of companies going public is also soaring. 106 US companies have gone public through the third quarter, raising a total of $24.7 billion, according to IPO tracker Renaissance Capital. That's up from 71 in 2022 and 108 in 2023 and on track to beat the $27 billion raised in those two years.Third-quarter results — and commentary about 4Q dealmaking so far — will be closely watched for further signs of progress in M&amp;A, equity underwriting, and debt underwriting.<h2 id="bf745d80-abee-4488-881c-e8551a17811c">Trading</h2>At the Barclays Financial Services conference in September, big bank executives warned that trading revenues may be muted compared to 2023.Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon described a "more challenging macro environment, particularly in the month of August," and warned that the bank's trading business "is trending down close to 10%." The company's deal book saw a 28.8% QoQ and 16.8% YoY growth as its revenue grew to Rs 22,300 crore during the quarter and profits jumped to Rs 3,210 crore during the second quarter of FY25. Yesterday, the company posted a solid 21.2% YoY rise in its consolidated net profits, which stood at Rs 2,646.3 crore in the year-ago period. The company's revenue from the <keyword id="20069374" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-services" source="keywords">IT services</keyword> segment was at $2660.1 million, an increase of 1.3% QoQ and a decrease of 2.0% YoY. For the quarter ending December 31, 2024, the company expects revenue from its IT Services business segment to be in the range of $2,607 million to $2,660 million. Wipro CEO and MD Srini Pallia said that Q2 was driven by strong execution, which enabled the Bengaluru-based firm to meet its expectations for <keyword id="19965932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revenue-growth" source="keywords">revenue growth</keyword>, bookings, and margins. "We continued to expand our top accounts; large deal bookings surpassed $1 billion once again, and Capco maintained its momentum for another consecutive quarter. market</h2>Vivo has emerged as the market leader in Q3 2024, with a 15.8% market share, up from a 13.9% market share in Q3 2023. This marks the third consecutive quarter where the smartphone maker has led the Indian smartphone market. Vivo’s shipments have increased by 20% year-on-year. Oppo is second, with a 13.9% market share in Q3 2024, up from a 9.9% market share in Q3 2023. The company’s shipments have increased by 47.6% year-on-year. Samsung, which led the Indian smartphone market in Q3 2023 with a market share of 16.2% has been pushed down to the third spot with a 12.3% market share. The company’s shipments have declined by 19.7% year-on-year. Other notable changes include the increase in Apple’s market share from 5.7% to 8.2%, a decline in OnePlus’ market share from 6.2% to 3.6% and a 149% year-on-year increase in shipments recorded by Motorola. <h2>5G shipments on the rise</h2>The share of 5G shipments increased to 83% in Q3 2024, up from 57% in Q3 2023. Of the 46 million smartphones shipped, 38 million were 5G smartphones. This has been fueled by the decline in the average selling price (ASP) of 5G smartphones. The ASP has by 20% to $292 (approx. ₹24,650). “Cyclical dip in demand after the festive period and high shipments in 3Q24 will result in higher stock levels across channels in 4Q24. Thus, India's smartphone market is expected to exit 2024 with a low single-digit annual growth,” said Navkendar Singh, AVP – Devices Research, IDC. Indian smartphone shipments grow 5.6% in Q3 2024, Vivo leads the market

For the financial year ending March 31, 2024, the net profit of the company surged to Rs 571.83 crore, from Rs 388.68 crore a year ago. The standalone total revenue from operations grew to Rs 1,517.50 crore, from Rs 1,234.60 crore in the same period last year. For the financial year ending March 31, 2024, the standalone total income rose to Rs 5,789.57 crore, as against Rs 4,147 crore last financial year. India’s Chief Economic Advisor (CEA), <keyword id="20690607" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="V-Anantha-Nageswaran" source="keywords">V Anantha Nageswaran</keyword>, remains optimistic about the nation’s economic prospects despite a slower-than-expected <keyword id="19972825" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GDP-growth" source="keywords">GDP growth</keyword> in the second quarter of FY2024-25. Speaking at the Bharat @100 Summit hosted by Assocham, he said that the fundamental health of the economy remains robust, according to a report by aNI. Nageswaran highlighted several indicators demonstrating the economy’s resilience. “If you run through the checklist for the <keyword id="19948184" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-economy" source="keywords">Indian economy</keyword>, the health is pretty robust,” he noted, pointing to controlled levels of external debt as a share of GDP, declining non-performing assets in the banking system, and stable inflation trends. Although certain food items have caused inflationary spikes, their impact is limited within the overall consumer price index basket, he explained. The CEA praised the shift in fiscal expenditure priorities over the past seven years, with greater focus on capital investments rather than revenue spending. This reallocation, he suggested, has bolstered long-term economic stability and growth potential. India’s GDP growth for the July-September quarter was 5.4%, significantly below the Reserve Bank of India’s forecast of 7%. While this has sparked concerns among economists, Nageswaran urged against overreacting. Erratic monsoons and excessive rainfall disrupted economic activity in Q2, he explained, while global uncertainties and supply chain pressures further weighed on growth. Despite these challenges, he maintained confidence in the broader growth narrative, citing improvements in key economic metrics. For instance, India’s gross capital formation has risen from 27.3% of GDP in the second decade of the 2000s to 30.8% today. Private consumption remains steady, and exports—spanning both services and manufacturing—continue to perform well even amid challenging global conditions. Nageswaran also underscored India’s growing competitiveness in international trade. He noted that the nation’s total <keyword id="24325087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports-as-a-percentage-of-GDP" source="keywords">exports as a percentage of GDP</keyword> now surpass China’s, showcasing its resilience and adaptability in a shifting global trade environment. However, he cautioned against reading too much into quarterly fluctuations, highlighting the impact of geopolitical developments such as trade restrictions from the US on critical minerals and rare earths, as well as policy shifts in China.
