The bank had posted a net profit of Rs 6,300.81 crore during the corresponding January-March period of 2018-19. The consolidated total income during the March quarter of 2019-20 increased to Rs 38,287.17 crore, from Rs 33,260.48 crore a year ago, the bank said in a regulatory filing. The bank said it will not make any further dividend payouts from profit pertaining to 2019-20, as per RBI directives announced on Friday. The central bank had debarred lenders from dividend payouts so that they can conserve capital in an environment of heightened uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 crisis. Accordingly, the board of directors of HDFC Bank, at their meeting held on Saturday, did not propose any final dividend for the year ended March 31, 2020, it added. HDFC just became the third Indian company after Reliance and TCS to achieve a market  value of more than ₹6 trillion

<keyword id="6357149" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="HDFC-bank">HDFC Bank</keyword>’s second quarter net profit increased by 20.1% to Rs 2,380 crore against Rs 1,982 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. 
 
The bank’s net interest income surged 23.1% to Rs 5,511 crore in the July-September quarter from Rs 4,476.5 crore in the same period last year. The net interest margin rose 10 basis points sequentially to 4.5% from 4.4%. 
 
Other incomes (consisting of fees and commissions, foreign exchange and derivatives, profit on sale of investments) went up by 11% to Rs 2,047 crore from Rs 1,844 crore during the same period while operating expenses jumped 19.2% to Rs 3,497.90 crore from Rs 2,934.2 crore year-on-year. 
 
The bank’s gross non-performing assets (NPAs) fell to 1.02%, while net NPA remained unchanged at 0.3%.

HDFC Bank’s Q2 Profit Surges 20%

HDFC Bank is beefing up capital and provision to cushion a spike in bad loans post moratorium — and that’s helping its share price

New York, Aug 17 (IANS) US-based investor rights law firm Rosen Law Firm has announced an investigation of potential securities claims on behalf of shareholders of HDFC Bank following allegations that the bank may have issued materially misleading business information to investors. The development follows after reports in July said that HDFC Bank had conducted an investigation into the "improper lending practices and conflicts of interests" in its vehicle-financing arm. The law firm's statement said that post the media reports, HDFC Bank's American depositary receipt price fell $1.37 per share, or 2.83 per cent, to close at $47.02 per share on July 13, 2020. On July 19, 2020, the NYSE-listed HDFC Bank reported its financial results for the first quarter of the Bank's 2021 fiscal year, missing analyst estimates with respect to net profit and reporting a deterioration in its asset quality, the statement noted. Rosen Law to initiate class action lawsuit against HDFC Bank

MUMBAI: Getting the <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> going again will be among the primary tasks of the new government, although there are few concrete signs of a turnaround amid gloomy forecasts of a possibly weak monsoon. But if and when some of the sunnier prognostications come true, the banking sector will be among the beneficiaries. 
 Banking analysts are of the view that once the economy picks up, ICICI Bank and <keyword id="6355975" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Axis-Bank">Axis Bank</keyword> will gain on account of loan growth and <keyword id="6357149" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="HDFC-bank">HDFC Bank</keyword> will benefit on account of better credit quality and margin improvement. 
 "All the three banks - ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank - are well placed to grow once the economic revival kicks in. In terms of valuation, Axis Bank is cheaper compared to an ICICI Bank," said Vaibhav Agarwal, <keyword id="194323" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="banking-analyst">banking analyst</keyword> at Angel Broking. "Axis Bank's focus on its retail business has increased over the past two years. There have been some concerns on the asset-quality front. However, once the policy environment improves, these concerns will be over." 
 
The banks have been consolidating corporate loans and diversifying their balance sheet, so they are positioned to hit the growth button once the economy gains momentum. In the March quarter, the big three private sector lenders saw credit growth in the high teens.

In the March quarter, ICICI reported a 15% rise in profit to Rs 2,652 crore, while Axis Bank's increased 18.5% to Rs 1,842 crore, both meeting expectations. HDFC Bank's profit grew 23% to Rs 2,327 crore, the slowest in more than a decade and below estimates on account of the sluggish economy and higher tax rates. 
 
Private lenders expect to grow faster than the industry average, which is around 20%. 
 "We expect the system loan growth to be 16-18% in the current financial year. We aim to grow at 2-4% higher than (this) average. So, our credit growth is expected to be 18-20%," said <keyword id="45875" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Chanda-Kochhar">Chanda Kochhar</keyword>, managing director and chief executive officer, ICICI Bank. On the asset quality front, managements feel the worst is over. 
 "ICICI Bank and Axis Bank would be the biggest beneficiaries of an economic revival as they would see loan demand from corporates increase. HDFC Bank will see increase in short-term loan demand and will benefit from improved asset quality," said Saday Sinha, banking analyst, <keyword id="66607" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Kotak-securities">Kotak Securities</keyword>. "Axis Bank has exposure to the power sector. In the next one-and-a-half years, if the input linkage problems are not solved, it (Axis Bank) runs the risk of restructuring these accounts." 
 
ICICI Bank and Axis Bank have restructured loans worth Rs 2,156 crore and Rs 1,115 crore, respectively. "Looking at where we are and the uncertain environment, with no change in financial year 2015, we see credit cost to be around 70 basis points," said V Srinivasan, executive director, corporate banking at Axis Bank. 
 
Net non-performing assets rose marginally to 0.3% from 0.2% for HDFC Bank. 
 
"We have managed to maintain asset quality as we have avoided lending to some names and stayed away from groups that have been highly leveraged," said Paresh Sukthankar, deputy MD, HDFC Bank. There is an element of "growth and asset quality linked to the economic growth. The worst is behind us. Clearly we are off the bottom", he said.

Mumbai, Aug 17 (IANS) As HDFC Bank faces a likely class action lawsuit by the US-based Rosen Law Firm, the bank said that the proposed lawsuit looks frivolous as the bank has been transparent with its disclosures. The global investor rights law firm earlier announced an investigation of potential securities claims on behalf of the shareholders of HDFC Bank following allegations that the bank may have issued materially misleading business information to the investors. An HDFC Bank spokesperson said: "We were unaware of any such development (class action lawsuit) till we heard about it from the media a little earlier today. We are getting details of it. We'll examine it and respond to it appropriately. Prima facie it does look frivolous as we believe we have been transparent in our disclosures." The firm's announcement of going ahead with a lawsuit came after reports in July said that HDFC Bank had conducted an investigation into the "improper lending practices and conflicts of interests" in its vehicle-financing arm. The law firm's statement said that post the media reports, HDFC Bank's American depositary receipt price fell $1.37 per share, or 2.83 per cent, to close at $47.02 per share on July 13, 2020. On July 19, 2020, the NYSE-listed HDFC Bank had reported its financial results for the first quarter of the Bank's 2021 fiscal year, missing analysts' estimates with respect to net profit and reporting a deterioration in its asset quality, the statement noted. The private sector lender had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 6,300.81 crore in the corresponding January-March period of the preceding fiscal year 2018-19. Consolidated total income grew to Rs 38,287.17 crore in the reported quarter, Rs 33,260.48 crore in the year ago period, the bank said in a regulatory filing. On a standalone basis, the bank's net profit grew by 17.7 per cent to Rs 6,927.69 crore from Rs 5,885.12 crore. Income rose to Rs 35,917.63 crore as against Rs 31,204.46 crore earlier.
