It is noteworthy that among all the lenders, HDFC is the largest credit card seller in the country. “RBI has issued an order dated December 2, to HDFC Bank Ltd with regard to certain incidents of outages in the internet banking/ mobile banking/ payment utilities of the bank over the past two years, including the recent outages in the bank’s internet banking and payment system on November 21, 2020, due to a power failure in the primary data centre,” the bank said in a regulatory filing. According to the bank the <a href="https://www.bseindia.com/xml-data/corpfiling/AttachLive/893abfb4-95cb-4942-a555-312aef465ef4.pdf">RBI order</a> “has advised the bank to temporarily stop all launches of the digital business-generating activities planned under its program Digital 2.0 and other proposed business generating IT applications and sourcing of new credit card customers”. In addition, the order has directed the bank board to examine the lapses and fixes accountability. The lender said the above measures should be considered for lifting upon satisfactory compliance with the major critical observations as identified by the RBI. HDFC Bank said “over the last two years, it has taken several measures to fortify its IT systems and will continue to work swiftly to close out the balance and would continue to engage with the regulator in this regard. “The bank has been taking conscious, concrete steps to remedy the recent outages on its digital banking channels and assures its customers that it expects the current supervisory actions will have no impact on its existing credit cards, digital banking channels and existing operations. The bank believes that these measures will not materially impact its overall business,” it added. HDFC Bank has lost over $2 billion in market value after the RBI crackdown on the lender’s digital business

<ul><li><keyword id="790242" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="WhatsApp">WhatsApp</keyword> has finally gotten a nod from National Payments Corporation of India to make its payment offering live in India.</li><li>The messaging app stated in a blog that it will be working with five leading banks in India including ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, the State Bank of India and <keyword id="3907200" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="jio-payments-bank">Jio Payments Bank</keyword>. </li><li>Its payment feature has been rolled out in 10 Indian regional language versions of WhatsApp.</li></ul>You will finally be able to send money through <keyword id="6354576" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword> Inc’s messaging service WhatsApp in India. WhatsApp made the announcement on its blog after <keyword id="193629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NPCI">NPCI</keyword> that operates the UPI payment infrastructure, gave its go-ahead to WhatsApp for its payment feature using UPI. “WhatsApp designed our payments feature in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) using the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), an India-first, real-time payment system that enables transactions with over 160 supported banks. We’re excited to join India’s campaign to increase the ease and use of digital payments, which is helping expand financial inclusion in India,” read its statement. WhatsApp's payment feature has been rolled out in 10 Indian regional language versions of WhatsApp. To send money on WhatsApp in India, one needs to have a bank account and debit card in India. WhatsApp will send instructions to banks that initiate the transfer of money via UPI between sender and receiver bank accounts. “We’re delighted to be working with five leading banks in India: ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, the State Bank of India, and Jio Payments Bank. People can send money on WhatsApp to anyone using a UPI supported app,” read the statement. Payments on WhatsApp will be available for people on the latest version of the iPhone and Android app.

New Delhi, June 15 (IANS) WhatsApp Pay is on the cards for its over 400 millions users in India but before it becomes a mainstream mode of payment and mobile-based ecommerce, banks in India are already leveraging the app in helping digitally-inactive customers adopt WhatsApp as their first digital banking channel in the social distancing times. Today, WhatsApp has become a convenient and seamless channel for customers to interact with banks, which are providing a range of banking services through the platform. Kotak Mahindra Bank was one of the first banks in the country to launch banking services on WhatsApp in 2018. The bank has served nearly 20 lakh customers on its WhatsApp Banking channel to date, with a massive 98 per cent increase in the customer base accessing WhatsApp Banking in the financial year 2020 as compared to the last financial year. "Given that the majority of our customers are familiar with the WhatsApp interface, we found that many of our digitally inactive customers have adopted WhatsApp as their first digital banking channel," Deepak Sharma, President and Chief Digital Officer, Kotak Mahindra Bank, told IANS. Take the case of HDFC Bank which is using WhatsApp Business API as one of the key channels for engaging with the customers - from one way push messages such as on-boarding communication to new customers, information on product features and benefits, payment notifications and regulatory updates. "WhatsApp also helps in two-way customer support through access to more than 8,000 FAQs on bank's products and services, quick product application links and enquiry services," informed Anjani Rathor, Chief Digital Officer at HDFC Bank. According to Abhijit Bose, Head of WhatsApp India, the Business API is helping larger firms connect with their customers at scale. "Once customers opt-in or reach out to ask a question, merchants using the API can send notifications, receipts, and provide customer support. This helps brands foster deep and meaningful relationships with their customers, which can help their companies increase sales and grow," Bose told IANS. According to Sharma, Kotak Bank is using WhatsApp Banking channel for primarily two purposes. One is to send important alerts to customers such as EMI schedules and payment reminders etc. "We also send the digital welcome kit on opening an account to a customer on WhatsApp. "Two, we offer a range of banking services and answer customer queries on WhatsApp. There are some queries that get concluded on WhatsApp itself  this includes a range of bank account and credit card-related queries," he noted. Kotak Bank has also enabled services that are initiated on WhatsApp and then get executed on its website or Kotak's mobile banking app. This includes service requests such as updating mobile number, email ids, PAN, updating FATCA (the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) declaration, cancelling NACH mandate, activating/deactivating passbook, deregistering printed statements, applying for a loan, credit card and opening an investment account, etc. The HDFC Bank is using artificial intelligence (AI)-driven conversational banking experience through WhatsApp Banking as well. "Some of the top queries from the customers on this platform circle around enquiries on existing accounts and cards, pre-approved offers and product eligibility, interest rates on loans and deposits and EMI moratorium guidelines, to name a few," informed Rathor. According to Bose, the current lockdown has magnified the critical need for businesses to have a digital presence. "Businesses that many people were previously accustomed to visiting in person -- a bank or grocery store, for example -- are finding WhatsApp to be especially useful for providing customers with support and useful information," said Bose. Apologies for the inconvenience.” Reports of the outage started coming in on Monday morning and peaked in the evening at around 5 pm, according to <a href="https://downdetector.in/status/hdfc-bank/">Downdetector</a> — most of them from metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Surat. Angry customers want HDFC Bank to cover late payment charges after mobile and net banking remain down for a second day in a row

Mumbai, Jan 30 () Bank of Maharashtra and State Bank of India are the only two state-run banks that showed 'good' performance in terms of digital transactions in December with a score of 77 and 68 respectively, government data showed.
 The score for an individual bank is given by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on various parameters such as percentage of digital transactions, merchant deployment achieved, system resilience and average percentage of technical decline for UPI or AePS transactions, among others.
 For digital transactions, the government has given a target of 4,000 crore digital transactions for the current fiscal.
 Banks' performance on various parameters, including digital transactions, is tracked on a monthly basis.
 During April to December, Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) achieved 102.70 per cent of the annual target of digital transactions, the latest data released by MeitY showed.
 For BoM, the government has set a target of 19.7 crore digital transactions during the current financial year.
 SBI achieved 99.09 per cent of the annual digital transactions target in the nine months of the current fiscal.
 In December, nine private lenders and two payments banks received good rating on digital transactions.
 Overall score of Yes Bank, Fino Payments Bank and HDFC Bank was 76 in December. ICICI Bank and IDFC First Bank scored 74 and 73, while Axis Bank and IDBI Bank scored 71 each, MeitY data showed. HV ABM

BoM, SBI only PSBs rated 'good' in digital transactions in Dec: Govt data

Many Indian banks, including ICICI and SBI, are ready to take on a battle with non-bank companies offering <keyword id="6368227" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mobile-wallets">mobile wallets</keyword>. For this, they are armed with their readymade payment systems, a wide merchant network and an on tap customer base, with which they want to reclaim what was their territory just a couple of years ago. 
 
In the past one year, large lenders like ICICI Bank, SBI, Axis Bank and HDFC Bank have launched new payment instruments so that they can prevent their customers from moving money to these newly emerging non-bank companies. 
 These apps include SBI's Buddy, ICICI's Pockets, HDFC Bank's PayZapp and Axis' Lime, which are in the market to challenge <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword>, <keyword id="143842" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mobikwik">MobiKwik</keyword> and Citrus Pay. 
 
"It is an evolving space and the shift is towards digital transactions. None of us know the pace of the shift. Everyone is trying to experiment with the space," Axis Bank Chief Executive Shikha Sharma told ET. 
 
While on one side, wallets have spent millions of rupees to brand themselves and establish their presence in the market, banks are using their existing brand value to attract customers. 
 
"Investments in this business for us is in terms of deployment of resources as platform has been provided by our technology partner," said Manju Agarwal, SBI’s Deputy MD for corporate strategy and new businesses. 
 
Parag Rao, who heads cards and merchant acquiring at HDFC Bank, told ET that he has been leveraging the bank's merchant and customer base so that customers can be offered attractive discounts for users of PayZapp. 
 
"We want to facilitate all forms of transactions that the customer uses. In the physical world, the user can use the credit card and the debit card while in the mobile world he can use wallets," Rao said. 
 
Data from RBI show that the number of outstanding debt and credit cards have increased more than three times in the past six years. However, paying in cash is still people’s preferable option. 
 
"Banks are excellent settlement engines, but when it comes to user experience, we have been able to train 123 million people over the last five years to make digital transactions without glitches. People trust us with their money," said Nitin Mishra, head of products at Paytm, India's largest wallet company.
