The company also announced that it would layoff 3500 employees as it sees revenues slowing further in 2023. The Nasdaq-listed company’s March quarter net profit grew 3% on year to $580 million. Meanwhile, its revenue declined 0.3% on year to $4.8 billion during the quarter. The company follows a January to December accounting year. Adding to the woes, Cognizant says full year guidance of 2023 is expected to be $19.2 - $19.6 billion, which would mean a decline of 1.2%. The next quarter revenue is expected to be at $4.83 - $4.88 billion, showing a decline of 0.6% to 1.6%, or a decline of 1.0% to flat in constant currency. Cognizant reported an operating margin of 14.6% for March quarter, which is lower than Indian IT giants TCS, Infosys, HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra. For the full year 2023, the company has guided for adjusted operating margin to be in the range of 14.2%-14.7%. Following the peer IT major’s mixed bag of earnings which expects a decline in 2023 revenues, shares of most Indian IT companies were trading lower. It attributed the move to its NextGen program through which it expects to simplify its operating model and optimise corporate functions. “In the second quarter of 2023, we initiated the NextGen program aimed at simplifying our operating model, optimizing corporate functions and consolidating and realigning office space to reflect the post-pandemic hybrid work environment. Our drive for simplification will include operating with fewer layers in an effort to enhance agility and enable faster decision making,” the company said in a statement. Cognizant has a total headcount of 3.51 lakh in the March quarter, which is a decrease of 3,800 from the previous quarter. Its voluntary attrition rate declined to 23% in Q1 FY23 from 30% in Q1 FY22. Cognizant braces for slow year ahead, to cut 3,500 jobs and slash office spaces

Increments have also started rolling out from October 1 for junior-level employees, and will be effective for senior-level employees starting January 1, 2021. “Wages hikes were only deferred by one quarter from the company’s regular increment cycle,” said CEO C Vijayakumar Apparao added that the increments will be in line with what was doled out last year. The average numbers last year were 6% at offshore and 2.5% onsite. This is a step up from last year when the company added around 8,100 freshers overall. In the second quarter, HCL Tech added an overall 2,798 employees to its roster between July and September, of which 1,578 were freshers. “This is lower than what we anticipated because of COVID-19 situation and the low availability of people,” said Apparao. In the first quarter, the number of freshers added was around 1,200. Many students in line with offer letters were not onboarded yet since their final exams were postponed during the lockdown. Nonetheless, it still means there’s still a deficit of around 9,000 freshers before HCL Tech can meet its target. This puts it among the top multinationals headquartered in India for employees. The company is looking to onboard 10,000 employees over the next year in the US amid the uncertainty around H-1B visa regulations. Over the last five years, TCS has hired around 21,500 employees in the country in its efforts to localise. Wipro, which recently saw a change in leadership with Thierry Delaporte at the helm, did not disclose any exact numbers but does have ‘robust’ hiring plans for the second half of the current fiscal. “Very robust hiring this quarter, both laterally and campuses. We continue to see the same momentum going forward,” said the company’s CHRO Saurabh Govil during the second-quarter earnings call. He added that given the company’s current growth momentum, hiring — laterally and via campuses — is an important part of managing that growth. This includes hiring across geographies, including India and in the new business areas, especially cloud and cybersecurity, where the demand lies. India’s IT sector is among the first to recover from the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Hiring freshers, rather than laterally, allows companies to pick up talent that’s relatively cheaper. It’s also easier to train fresh minds in-house for specific skills, especially because they are in short supply in the market. TCS, Infosys, HCL Tech, and others to see more freshers than lateral hires in the next six months

Expected to continue in the next quarter as well,” said HCL Technologies chief human resources officer (CHRO) Apparao VV. “Attrition has significantly come down but we will not be hiring significant numbers for immediate replacement,” he added. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) didn’t hire in Q1FY21 but filled in over 4,500 positions by reskilling, cross-skilling and multiskilling the company’s existing employees. Operating margins came under pressure in Q1 due to wage hikes, higher subcontracting expenses and cost of backfilling attrition. Azim Premji and Shiv Nadar lose $20 billion of their personal wealth – thanks to the Great Indian IT meltdown

So much so that the company has cut its operating margin (earnings before interest and taxes) guidance for the full year ending March 2022 to 19% from the earlier estimate of 19-21%. Our current operating model is currently a 20-year old legacy. The IT services giants may not agree on whether work-from-home should be permanent or not but they all agree that it has brought costs down and widened margins. The absence of transportation costs and reimbursements has helped companies save money during the lockdown. Rao added that Infosys has hired 5,000 employees in the last quarter through lateral hiring. “There is a general freeze on hiring, overall we will continue to look for talent in niche areas. In Q1 itself 4,000+ lateral hiring. The trend will continue going forward as well based on the needs,” he said.
