<ul class="summary-list"><li>As we get older, things such as vacations seem to go by faster. </li><li>Adults tend to have more routines and fewer new experiences, making time feel like it flies by.</li></ul>When I was 13, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/summer-gives-me-social-anxiety-2023-7">summer</a> felt like an eternity. Two of my closest friends had divorced parents. So they would spend most of the summer visiting their dads — one lived in a different city and the other was halfway around the world. I felt like I didn't see them for years.<br /><br />Now that I'm almost three times that age, it's strange to think how those weeks felt like they were going by at a glacial pace. With each passing year, summer comes to an end, and I start sounding like a TV anchor who's surprised that it's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/famous-september-birthdays-2018-8">September</a> already.<br /><br />If you're like me, you may be wondering why it feels like time is going faster <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/parents-getting-older-how-talk-aging-senior-care-2023-8"><u>as you get older</u></a>. Neuroscientists explained to Insider the science behind time perception and what we could do to slow things down and keep our brains active and engaged.<br /><br /><h2><strong>Childhood experiences seemed to last longer</strong></h2>Thinking back on your childhood, you might recall getting your ears pierced, trying a sip of beer, riding a roller coaster, or going on your first airplane trip without your parents. Even if you can't remember precise dates or details, these formative years are full of novel experiences.<br /><br />Brain plasticity is the organ's ability to adapt as needed.<br /><br />"The brain's high plasticity during childhood means it's rapidly forming new neural connections and storing detailed memories," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dccc.edu/about/faculty-staff/meet-our-faculty/hayley-nelson"><u>Hayley Nelson, who holds a Ph.D.</u></a> in psychological and brain sciences and is a psychology professor and the founder of <a target="_blank" href="https://academyofneuro.com/"><u>the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience</u></a>, told Insider. "In these rapid-learning periods, the brain encodes more information, making time feel elongated."<br /><br />Another reason that childhood experiences feel longer is the relative nature of time. As you get older, "each successive year represents a significantly smaller percentage of your lifetime," <a target="_blank" href="https://psych.ubc.ca/profile/todd-handy/"><u>Todd Handy, who holds a Ph.D.</u></a> in psychology and is a cognitive neuroscientist and professor of psychology at the <keyword id="20564333" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="university-of-british-columbia" source="keywords">University of British Columbia</keyword>, told Insider. "When you're 5, a year is a fifth of your life, and when you're 60, a year is a 60th of your life."<br /><br />At 13, I felt like two months dragged out because I was waiting to reunite with my friends. Strong emotions such as anxiety, fear, and dread can make time feel longer, <keyword id="20300936" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nelson" source="keywords">Nelson</keyword> said.<br /><br />Just think of how slow time feels when it's the last hour of your workday before a long weekend or when you're sitting in the dentist's chair waiting for the numbing cream to take effect. Time can feel slow in moments when we want it to go faster.<br /><br /><h2><strong>You experience time differently from how you remember it</strong></h2>Deep inside the brain is a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/brain/sls-20077047?s=5"><u>structure called the hippocampus</u></a>, which is responsible for learning and storing memories. When you experience something significant, like failing your driver's test or traveling with your partner for the first time, there tends to be greater activity in the hippocampus, leading to richer memories.<br /><br />"Later, when you recall these memories, they appear longer and more detailed," Nelson said. "So although an event might feel short while it's occurring, it could feel longer when you remember it."<br /><br />In addition to how you perceive time, it's worth considering where you're "mentally spending your time," <keyword id="23547288" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="handy" source="keywords">Handy</keyword> said. You can spend it focused on the here and now, as in the concept of mindfulness. Or you might be engaged in mind wandering, where you're thinking about the past or anticipating what's going to happen.<br /><br />"It's very natural for our brains to be able to anticipate the future and recall the past, and it's not a bad thing to mind wander," Handy said. Though if you're feeling detached or distracted when you should be enjoying yourself, trying to be more present can benefit your mental health.<br /><br /><h2><strong>Why it feels like time goes by faster with age</strong></h2>While time may feel relative in some ways, it's a finite resource. We have only a certain amount of time, and this becomes increasingly apparent as we age.<br /><br />"When you're younger, it's really easy to not think about time because you have so much more of your life left to live," Handy said. "As we get older, we realize we have less and less of it, and I think that also can lend a sense of urgency, which makes it feel like it's going faster."<br /><br />The aging process also leads to physiological changes in areas of the brain responsible for thinking and making decisions. These neural pathways can degrade and affect brain activity in older adults, which might change our perception of time, Nelson said.<br /><br />"Additionally, adults often have more routines and fewer new experiences, making time feel like it's flying by," she added. Because social media gives us ready access to memories through photos and anniversaries, we also tend to experience <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/best-90s-halloween-movies-to-stream-this-year-2023-9"><u>nostalgia</u></a>.<br /><br />"If we're fortunate, we have a lot of good memories to draw on from the past," Handy said. "At the same time, those can feel deeply bittersweet, especially with respect to kids growing up, losing parents, and missed opportunities."<br /><br /><h2><strong>You can learn to 'slow' down and remember more</strong></h2>There's no magic elixir for slowing down time. Fortunately, there are things you can do to keep your brain active and improve memory retention.<br /><br />You can start by getting enough sleep, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/ways-exercise-can-help-live-longer-longevity-2023-9"><u>being physically active</u></a>, and eating a nutritious diet. Practicing mindfulness can also help increase awareness of yourself and your surroundings.<br /><br />"Activities like puzzles can boost brain functions related to decision-making and problem-solving, helping preserve a consistent perception of time," Nelson said. When you're learning or experiencing something new, your brain is prompted to create brain cells and connections, which can improve memory retention.<br /><br />Of the countless memories we form throughout life, "we're more inclined to remember novel experiences," Handy said. And because we have better recall for things such as traveling abroad or trying a new cuisine, we may feel like we've done more after having these experiences.<br /><br />On the other hand, there's value in not putting pressure on yourself to make new memories, especially if your life doesn't match up with your friends' and peers'. "The more accepting we are of our experiences in terms of time passing, the better off we're going to be," Handy added.<br /><br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Some people see their life "flash before their eyes" when they fear they're dying.</li><li>Michele Eason Simone experienced this during a near drowning.</li></ul><p>Michele Eason Simone was swimming on the <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/travel/best-vacation-rentals-outer-banks">Outer Banks</a> in <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-things-moving-to-asheville-north-carolina-from-nyc-2023-5">North Carolina</a> when she felt a rip tide pull her out to sea. As waves crashed over her head and she struggled to breathe, she was horrified to see the lifeguard chatting with someone on the beach, rather than rushing to her rescue. Eason Simone thought she was <a href="https://www.insider.com/viral-video-drowning-child-fake-stunt-awareness-backlash-2023-6">going to drown</a>.  </p><p>That's when she experienced something she couldn't explain. </p><p>"I started to feel myself start to feel like I was going to black out, but before I did, my short life flashed before my eyes," said Eason Simone, who was 21 at the time. "It was like having a memory of everything that had happened to me in my life show itself to me all at once in the quickest movie you could ever imagine. It was like a universal understanding of every memory in only an instant."</p><p>More than three decades later, the experience is still hard to explain, but profound, Eason Simone says. She's not alone. Many people have experienced their lives "flashing before their eyes" when they fear they're going to die. Last month, a man explained on Twitter his experience during a brain surgery gone awry. </p><p>"Life flashes before your eyes," he<a href="https://twitter.com/rahsh33m/status/1688415033187860480" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> said</a>. "Every memory — I'm telling you, every single memory you've ever made in your life — will rush past you at light speed."</p><h2>Science has no explanation, but a few theories</h2><p>Science can't explain why some people experience these memories, which are scientifically known as a life review, says Neuroscientist<a href="https://academyofneuro.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Hayley Nelson</a>, founder of The Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience. However, there are some theories about what's going on. </p><p>"One theory suggests that oxygen deprivation during a life-threatening event can trigger the release of neurotransmitters like glutamate, causing neurons to fire rapidly," Nelson said. "This heightened activity in the visual cortex might lead to the perception of vivid memories and images, potentially contributing to the phenomenon of life review."</p><p>Another possible explanation has to do with how memories are stored in the brain. Scientists believe emotionally charged memories are stored in multiple areas of the brain, including the amygdala, the same area that's<a href="https://www.dana.org/article/beyond-emotion-understanding-the-amygdalas-role-in-memory/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> associated with</a> the fight or flight response. </p><p>"When faced with a life-threatening situation, the amygdala is automatically activated, and its involvement could prioritize memories linked to emotions such as fear, love, or regret," Nelson said. "These memories, once retrieved, might be integrated with the ongoing experience, creating a subjective sense of reliving one's life."</p><p>Yet<a href="http://nderf.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Dr. Jeffrey Long</a>, founder of Near-Death Experience Research Foundation, says he's studied experiences like these for decades and never found a physical explanation that makes sense for him. </p><p>"I have spent decades trying to find if there's anything in the brain that can account for this," he said. "As a scientist, it would make my life easier." But an explanation, so far, has evaded him. Instead, <a href="https://www.insider.com/near-death-experiences-research-doctor-life-after-death-afterlife-2023-8">Long has become convinced</a> that these experiences are signs that life after death exists. </p><h2>There could be some confirmation bias at play</h2><p>Many people have heard stories of others having "their life flash before their eyes." That can impact how a person who experiences a life review interprets it. </p><p>"The portrayal of life flashing before one's eyes in media and literature can establish expectations," Nelson said. "When people encounter a near-death situation, their brain may engage in a rapid mental review, which they subsequently interpret as aligning with the cultural trope."</p><p>Eason Simone had heard about life reviews but was stunned to experience one herself. </p><p>"I was shocked by seeing my life flash before my eyes because I had always heard people say that, but to experience it yourself is shocking, and you actually know what it is as soon as it happens," she said. "There's no doubt."</p><p>While science can't explain what happened to her, she says that she's come up with her own explanation. </p><p>"I do think it was a spiritual and supernatural experience, and I'll never forget it, " she said.</p>

I've been a bit too overwhelmed with the onslaught of breaking fast-food news this week to start writing anything yet, so your input would be welcome! </p><p>As the week comes to a close, read on for my attempt to sort things out. </p><h2>What is going on with retail CEOs? </h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>On Sunday evening, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mcdonalds-fired-ceo-stever-easterbrook-over-employee-relationship-2019-11">McDonald's announced</a> that Steve Easterbrook was out as CEO after having a relationship with another employee. He will be replaced by Chris Kempczinski, who previously ran McDonald's US business. Then, on Thursday, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gap-ceo-art-peck-steps-down-2019-11">Gap Inc. announced that CEO Art Peck would be stepping down</a> as the company reported another quarter of slumping sales. </p><p>Taking these exits along with the last few weeks' departures, which included <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nike-ceo-mark-parker-steps-down-2019-10">Nike's Mark Parker,</a> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kevin-plank-is-stepping-down-as-ceo-of-under-armour-2019-10">Under Armour's Kevin Plank,</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barneys-will-sell-to-authentic-brands-group-2019-10">Barneys' Daniella Vitale,</a> it's clear a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biggest-ceo-departures-wework-juul-ebay-warner-bros-metlife-2019-10">CEO exodus</a> is hitting retail. Through October, more than 1,332 CEOs have stepped down, <a href="http://www.challengergray.com/press/press-releases/2019-october-ceo-report-another-high-record-setting-year">according to staffing firm</a> Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas, Inc.</p><p>I spent the week trying to understand what the CEO swap means at McDonald's. Strategically, Kempczinski - or Chris K., as he's known at the company - is in line with his predecessor. But, the new CEO has clashed with franchisees in the past. </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mcdonalds-franchisees-reveal-what-they-think-new-ceo-2019-11">According to franchisees,</a> Kempczinski has worked to be more collaborative over the past year, with McDonald's making some concessions to franchisees. Leaked documents I got my hands on show that franchisee groups are focusing on the positives, and they seem cautiously optimistic.</p><p>But, franchisees are also emphasizing strength in numbers and the importance of making their voices heard. Internally, the departures are causing significant anxiety, workers told Hayley. </p><p>"We're all sort of fighting through the chaos and trying to make sense of all of it as people are leaving," one senior Jet employee said. "It's apparent big leaders are leaving every month ... and there's a snowball effect in many ways."</p><p><em><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-jet-top-leaders-depart-future-2019-11?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=BIPrime_select&amp;utm_campaign=BI%20Prime%202019-11-08&amp;utm_term=BI%20Prime%20Select">Subscribe to BI Prime and read Hayley's full story here.</a></strong></em></p><h2><strong>Influencers are selling clothes straight from closets to followers</strong></h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>Bethany talked to people who are using Instagram to sell their secondhand clothes, which allows them to avoid fees and tap into their captive audience of followers. </p><p>Micro-influencer Duan Mackenzie Nelson regularly holds "Sunday Closet Cleanouts," where followers can buy items via Instagram Story. Nelson then personally ships each item along with a handwritten thank-you note. </p><p>"It genuinely makes me feel good," Mackenzie Nelson said of her Instagram sales. "I think it's a nice way to clear your closet and your mind. If you have minutes to take a picture and post it on Instagram Stories, why not?"</p><p><em><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/instagram-influencers-sell-clothes-on-app-2019-11">Read Bethany's full story on Instagram's role in the exploding resale industry here. </a></strong></em></p><h2><strong>The return of Popeyes' chicken sandwich turned deadly</strong></h2><p><em><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></strong></em></p><p>The return of Popeyes' chicken sandwich should have been cause for celebration. And, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/popeyes-chicken-sandwich-more-popular-second-time-2019-11">many people</a> were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/popeyes-chicken-sandwich-social-media-reactions-2019-11">enthused</a> to see the sandwich return to menus <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/popeyes-new-chicken-sandwich-seems-smaller-different-2019-11">(even if it may be a bit smaller this time around).</a> </p><p>However, on Monday, a man was stabbed to death in a Popeyes parking lot. Police confirmed that an argument in the line for the chicken sandwich <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/maryland-stabbing-linked-to-return-of-popeyes-chicken-sandwich-police-2019-11">sparked the incident.</a></p><p>While some may point fingers at Popeyes or fans of the chicken sandwich, the incident highlights ongoing problems faced by people who work at fast-food chains. </p><p>In 2017, 29 food industry workers were murdered while on the job<a href="https://www.bls.gov/charts/census-of-fatal-occupational-injuries/number-and-rate-of-fatal-work-injuries-by-industry.htm">,</a> <a href="https://www.bls.gov/charts/census-of-fatal-occupational-injuries/number-and-rate-of-fatal-work-injuries-by-industry.htm">according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.</a> <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/cfoi.pdf">A total of 89</a> restaurant industry workers died from fatal injuries at work in 2017, with another <a href="https://www.bls.gov/web/osh/cd_r9.htm">72,310 suffering injuries on the job.</a> Many chains have been forced to revamp their approach to violence, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fast-food-industry-attempts-to-address-shootings-threat-training-2019-8">considering new approaches for dealing with active shooters.</a></p><p><em><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/popeyes-chicken-sandwich-violence-workers-2019-11">Irene and I wrote about the violence faced by fast-food workers here. </a></strong></em></p><h2><strong>Taste test of the week: More love for Wegmans</strong></h2><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></strong></p><p>In happier news, Irene visited Wegmans for the first time and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wegmans-grocery-store-first-time-review-2019-11">loved it,</a> joining the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wegmans-shoppers-price-design-quality-service-2019-11">grocery chain's cult following.</a> </p><p>Irene said that Wegmans' food court in particular stood out, with consistently fresh and high-quality options. But, the star of the show was surprisingly Wegmans' sushi selection. </p><p>Irene's take: "Every single bite burst with flavor. And the sea urchin tasted much better than the only other time I've splurged on sea urchin - at a Japanese restaurant.
