<keyword id="20436987" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hathras" source="keywords">Hathras</keyword>, a district in <keyword id="19894922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh" source="keywords">Uttar Pradesh</keyword>, India, is once again in the spotlight due to a recent <keyword id="21446700" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stampede" source="keywords">stampede</keyword> at a religious gathering. This tragic event has resulted in a <keyword id="19906608" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="death-toll" source="keywords">death toll</keyword> of 121 people so far, with dozens of devotees injured. <h2>What happened in Hathras?</h2>On Tuesday, a large crowd had gathered for a religious event in Hathras, known as a <keyword id="20297206" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Satsang" source="keywords">Satsang</keyword>. As per reports, organisers of the event only had clearance to host 80,000 devotees. However, over 2.5 lakh people gathered on the day of the event, leading to dangerous levels of overcrowding. People panicked and surged forward in a confined space, resulting in a stampede that led to suffocation and death. <div type="twitter" handle="IndianExpress" handlename="IndianExpress" favoritecount="0" retweetcount="0" id="1808138395069084130"></div> Organisers are being heavily criticised for overcrowding the venue and failing to implement proper safety measures. At the centre of it all is Narayan Saakar Hari, also known as <keyword id="20873157" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhole-Baba" source="keywords">Bhole Baba</keyword>, a controversial self-styled Godman who led the Satsang at Hathras. <h2>What caused the deaths?</h2>While the exact cause of deaths will only become clear after a probe, officials have provided some explanations. After the Satsang ended, hundreds of devotees rushed to touch Bhole Baba’s feet and collect soil that the Godman walked and drove on, creating a serious rush amidst an already overcrowded space. Further, in an attempt to escape “extreme humidity” amidst a rainy day, large groups of devotees had attempted to hurriedly exit the premises as the Satsang was about to end. Push quickly led to shove, and many slipped on the mud, fell, and were crushed in the stampede at Hathras. Additionally, The Indian Express reported that a particularly hazardous road was opened to the public after the Satsang ended. As per PTI, the road was built at a high elevation, and the overcrowding led to many falling down to a drain below, leading to their deaths. <h2>Is someone to blame for the Hathras casualties?</h2>Public outcry has pointed fingers at the event organisers for their negligence in <keyword id="20074926" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crowd-management" source="keywords">crowd management</keyword> and safety protocols, especially considering that it is well-known that Bhole Baba’s Satsangs are notorious for drawing large crowds. Many have also directly blamed Bhole Baba for the deaths in Hathras. While an FIR has been filed against the ‘sevadars’ (religious volunteers or organisers) of the event, some have expressed dissatisfaction that Bhole Baba was not named in it. The FIR has been registered against the Mukhya sevadar Devprakash Madhukar and other organisers, as per PTI. <h2>Aftermath of the stampede</h2>The Hathras stampede has caused widespread grief and anger. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister <keyword id="19898780" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yogi-adityanath" source="keywords">Yogi Adityanath</keyword> has ordered a full investigation into the incident. Further, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced a Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for those who tragically passed away at the Satsang event. However, opposition party members have deemed that the amount is “a joke”.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Etah, Rajesh Kumar Singh said the incident occurred at a '<keyword id="20297206" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="satsang" source="keywords">satsang</keyword>' in Pulrai village. "Twenty-seven bodies have arrived in Etah hospital. Among those killed are 23 women, three children and a man," the official told reporters. He said people had gathered large numbers for the event. The stampede apparently occurred due to <keyword id="531735" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="overcrowding" source="Orion">overcrowding</keyword>, Sikandara Rao police station SHO Ashish Kumar said. Chief Minister <keyword id="19898780" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yogi-adityanath" source="keywords">Yogi Adityanath</keyword> expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the stampede. He instructed officials to reach the accident site and carry out relief measures.

Lucknow, Apr 23 () The number of COVID-19 cases rose to 1,507 in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday as 58 more people tested positive for the infection, an official said. Out of the total cases, 1,299 are active patients while 187 have been treated and discharged, Principal Secretary, Health, Amit Mohan Prasad told reporters here."The total number of cases reported in the state have increased to 1,507. The state has so far witnessed 21 deaths due to the coronavirus," he said."The cases have been reported from 56 (out of total 75 districts of the state). Among them there are no active cases in 11 districts. Now, only 45 district have active cases," Prasad said.He said of the total cases, 938 are from the Tablighi Jamaat event or persons, who came in contact with them.The event, a religious congregation, had taken place in March in the Nizamuddin area of national capital Delhi."All the patients are recovering and now the number of cases are stabilising" he said.On Wednesday, he said, 3,737 samples were collected and a total of 3,955, including backlog of samples, were tested. This is "record testing" in a single day, Prasad said.He said at present, 1,584 persons are in isolation wards while 11,826 are in quarantine facilities in the state. Eleven of the coronavirus-hit districts that have no active cases now, include Pratapgarh, Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Khiri, Hathras, Bareilly, Prayagraj, Maharajganj, Shahjahanpur, Barabanki, Hardoi and Kaushambi, Prasad said. (Eds: Adds details) Lucknow, Apr 11 () With one more fatality reported from Bulandshahr, the COVID-19 death toll rose to five in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, while the number of cases climbed to 452 as 19 persons tested positive for the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours.A health department bulletin said one person died of COVID-19 in Bulandshahr on Saturday. With this, one death each has been reported from Basti, Meerut, Varanasi, Agra and Bulandshahr due to the dreaded virus.Of the 19 fresh cases, four each were reported from Meerut and Agra, three each from Lucknow and Bulandshahr, two from Ghaziabad and one each from Saharanpur, Badaun and Bhadohi, Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Awanish Awasthi said.Of the new cases, eight were linked to last month's Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi, he said, adding that altogether, 254 of the cases in Uttar Pradesh had links to the religious congregation held at Nizamuddin in the national capital.Till Friday, the coronavirus count in the state stood at 433.
