Dozens of students shuffled into a classroom with plates of chicken tenders, Texas toast, and bright blue boxes of the emergency contraceptive.Morrison had worked with the Planned Parenthood Generation Action club at Suffolk University to sponsor the event, part of Julie's efforts to win a new generation of consumers. However, she had another, more pressing reason for being there. Julie is doing more campus events to clear up some of the confusion about emergency contraception — namely, that it isn't medication abortion.Standing at the head of the classroom, Morrison read off a projector screen, "Emergency contraceptives like Julie are legal in how many states? 25, 48, 50, 37." Students tapped their answers into a quiz app. "It's 37," Lily, a spirited sophomore, whispered to her teammates.In a minute, the correct answer appeared on screen, and the quiet chatter rose to a clamor. The race's outcome could drastically change reproductive rights, foreign policy, gun safety, and climate law — all issues close to Eddy, a 35-year-old Californian and mother of two.But Eddy also has skin in the game as the chief executive officer of Malama Health, a startup helping women with gestational diabetes access better care. Its doula network assists patients on Medicaid with applying for benefits such as diabetes-friendly meals and medical transport.Eddy worries that if Trump wins, he would restrict access to the coverage and benefits that her users rely on, weakening one of Malama Health's key services."There is this common misperception that, 'we're in California, we're in a liberal state, and so we're safe.' Wade opened up the legal terrain for states to interfere with access to other reproductive care, said Lauren Berson Sugarman, founder and chief executive officer of Conceive, a startup that offers personalized fertility guidance, including text support from nurses and peer groups.In Alabama, the state Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos should be considered children. That put patients and fertility clinics on edge that they could be criminally charged for destroying extra embryos. A handful of Alabama clinics paused IVF treatments while patients throughout the South began moving their embryos to jurisdictions with more stable legal protections."We see a lot of patients come to us and say, should I move my embryos out of a red state? Because what happens if they come after IVF?" said Berson Sugarman.The push for "embryo rights" could have wide-reaching repercussions for startups like Maven Clinic or Carrot Fertility, which offer fertility benefits for employers, and TMRW Life Sciences, a biotech company creating robots for the safe storage of frozen sperm, eggs, and embryos.Moreover, it could influence the type of research that startups conduct and where. Morrison's mom called, concerned for her daughter's future."For probably two weeks straight, I was just doing reassurance calls," Morrison said.While emergency contraception is not the abortion bill and is currently legal in all 50 states, it is continuously confused with the abortion pill, which can have damaging consequences. In June, the medical journal JAMA Network Open published a <a target="_blank" href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2820370?%20utm_source=For_The_Media">study</a> that found retail pharmacy fills of Plan B, a leading morning-after pill brand, fell by 65% in states with near-total abortion bans the year after the Dobbs decision, partly due to clinic closures and confusion about its legal status.That confusion could threaten Julie's sales, and puts the onus of the company to better educate consumers. It sponsors events like trivia nights and sorority house brunches. It has enlisted TikTok influencers to share videos of their drugstore hauls showing how easy it is to buy Julie. In one video, a young woman going back-to-school shopping walks off with a two-count pack of the emergency contraceptive pill. The caption reads, "double majors, not double strollers."Other startups are urging consumers to fight for reproductive rights at the polls. Eddy's Malama Health has reminders to register to vote in its app and will tell users where their nearest polling station is closer to election day. The company asks for their ZIP codes during onboarding, Eddy explained."When you have a baby, you're like, 'I want to vote, but I don't know where to go,'" Eddy said. She hopes the emails will get more pregnant women and new moms to head to the polls. Many employers, Hurtubise said, wanted to know how business decisions they had already made would likely play out once it became clear who would take the White House.<h2 id="11219916-ac03-49a8-ae71-be52cee6d5bf">More employers could turn to automation</h2>Jason Leverant, COO and president at AtWork Group, a staffing firm focused on areas including advanced manufacturing, logistics, and warehousing, told BI that a focus on bringing manufacturing jobs back to the US — so-called <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-manufacturing-production-boom-economy-made-in-america-trade-war-2024-10">reshoring efforts</a> that are already underway — could further help boost momentum in hiring for workers <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/employers-dropping-degree-requirements-slow-to-hire-for-skills-2024-10">without college degrees</a>.Yet, Leverant said, reshoring could be more expensive for employers and, when combined with talent shortages, could push more <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-wont-take-as-many-jobs-as-feared-altman-2024-9">companies to automate</a> where possible.Reduced immigration could also harm industries like construction and agriculture, where immigrants often fill many roles, he said."Do we start seeing a skills gap or a talent gap there?" Leverant said. He said such a chasm could eventually push wages higher in those areas if employers grow desperate for workers.Leverant said a focus by some in Trump's inner circle, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, on areas like workplace <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-optimus-humanoid-robots-robotaxi-day-2024-10">automation</a> could mean as some aspects of jobs go away, workers who get the right training could take on "more complex roles that even advanced robotics can't touch right now."<h2 id="efdae223-ce1f-4c24-b0c3-4c4f63bde68d">A postelection rush to hire</h2>Aaron Cleavinger, a managing partner at Murdoch Mason Executive Search Group, told BI that he's been "inundated" with new search requests from clients since the election.He said that likely reflects a mix of the typical end-of-year ramp-up and also several months' worth of demand by employers, particularly in areas like manufacturing, that held off posting jobs because of political uncertainty."Anything that they've been delaying for the last couple of months, they're finally releasing," Cleavinger said, referring to employers and job postings.Cleavinger said that in many cases, employers might have been agnostic about which candidate won and instead just wanted to know which way it would break."They say, 'Hey, just tell me what I can count on, and then I can build a plan around that,'" he said.Cleavinger said demand for hiring will vary by industry, as it often does. Yet he said for small and medium-sized companies, optimism that there could be tax cuts could help boost budgets for hiring.<h2 id="dfe0f4e6-90ea-4cf9-bd4f-582908e761ca">Obstacles could emerge</h2>Even as some employers look to increase hiring, getting — and keeping — a job might get harder for some workers. Peter Rahbar, an employment attorney and founder of the boutique law firm The Rahbar Group, told BI that he expects to see an erosion of protections afforded to federal workers, including those seeking jobs.If enforcement of antidiscrimination laws becomes deprioritized, Rahbar said, that could make it harder for some people, including women and minorities, to land and retain jobs.Rahbar said reductions to immigration could hurt industries beyond agriculture and construction, including tech. That's because some tech companies needing workers rely on skilled immigrants to fill some roles.For now, though, Cleavinger, from Murdoch Mason Executive Search Group, expects demand for workers will generally heat up."I expect a pretty significant uptick in hiring. We usually see that anyway at the end of the year, but I think it'll be a little more pronounced now," Cleavinger said.

However, when <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-trump-tesla-spacex-x-department-government-efficiency-jobs-2024-11">Donald Trump </a>was elected for a second term, they were faced with tough questions over their credibility.Jess Rauchberg, a researcher on digital media cultures, told Business Insider that some fans felt that "the rug's been pulled out from underneath them.""I placed my trust in you as a follower, and I trusted your brand, but your brand is no longer credible," she said. "You see people who are really, really frustrated and who feel betrayed."<h2 id="5bb9fa96-a9d1-4218-910b-572d415dadc9">Predictions gone wrong</h2>The astrology industry is growing. According to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.marketresearchfuture.com/reports/astrology-market-22040">Market Research Future</a>, it is projected to grow from $14.3 billion in 2024 to $21.52 billion by 2032.Astrologists on TikTok are nothing new and have been on the platform as long as other communities like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-changes-book-publishing-marketing-author-careers-2023-5">BookTok</a> or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/witchtok-feud-baby-witches-gatekeeping-spells-2022-4">WitchTok</a>.The community includes tarot readers, spiritual workers, astrophotographers, and psychic mediums. The biggest creators include Nick Grigolia (3.2 million followers), Maren Altman (1.4 million), and Julia Kelley (384,000). Many use TikTok to attract paid customers.The industry has been gaining popularity on the platform with 492,000 posts having the #astrology hashtag in the last 12 months in the US alone, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://ads.tiktok.com/business/creativecenter/hashtag/astrology/pc/en">according to TikTok data</a>. Many astrology TikTok accounts predicted a Harris win based on her chart, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.semafor.com/article/11/10/2024/tiktok-astrologers-are-convinced-this-election-isnt-over">Semafor reported</a>. The current vice president had "her Saturn return, her Jupiter return, and her Mars return," professional astrologer Dayna Lynn Nuckolls <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/political-astrologists-predictions-who-will-win-presidential-election_n_6722d811e4b0871068fdfd1b">told HuffPost</a>.Trump, on the other hand, is in his seventh house year, Nuckolls told the outlet, which can signal conflict, competition, and disruption.Some astrologists foresaw Trump having a cardiac event and not becoming president due to health problems.<h2 id="829be4de-34dc-4560-9108-cda10e992a49">Fans let down</h2>After Trump's win, many astrology fans said they could no longer trust their favorite creators, with some even suggesting they should give up the trade altogether.In response, many astrologers have elaborated on their predictions, saying a period of unrest is still ahead. Others have doubled down, saying something surprising will happen within the next month."Some of you feel disillusioned by astrology and psychics who really saw this going in a different way," Rachel Lang, an astrologer, said in a recent video."And so I want to just say that the astrology of this time between now 2024 and 2026 is unprecedented. We haven't seen this many outer sign changes all within a short period of time in 6,000 years, so we really are in uncharted territory."The election took place "with Pluto and Capricorn at the last degree of Capricorn," and the inauguration in January "is taking place with Pluto in Aquarius," Lang said, which points to some mystery about how the "this story is going to continue to unfold."<h2 id="470ae343-4f60-4d47-a014-11e46690126d">Trust in the stars</h2>Rauchberg said people have been "clinging" to social media astrologists since the pandemic.A small study from 2018, published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, found that people tend to turn to astrology during stressful times as a "coping device," even if they don't believe in it the rest of the time."Americans and those who are closely following the US elections outside of the states are really hungry for some kind of information and some stability and some structure," Rauchberg said. "But when you don't have those sources out there, or you've been told not to trust the mainstream media, where do you go?"People turn to astrologers for similar reasons that they turn to podcasters, Rauchberg said. While young men have migrated toward Joe Rogan and Logan Paul, astrology TikTok is more likely to have seen an influx of women."I think this really correlates with this growing distrust in mainstream media," Rauchberg said.Both are, in a way, older forms of sharing information. Podcasts are seen as relatable and down to Earth. The stars, similarly, don't have an agenda. They were around before political parties or even the US itself existed."Podcasts are not totally unlike going into the Agora or a public forum in ancient Greece or ancient Rome and listening to somebody speak," she said."In a time where people are really frustrated with mainstream media being skewed toward one perspective, the stars feel a little bit more neutral," she added. "They're not affiliated with a particular political cause or political movement."Sara Walka, the founder of the holistic self-help business The Sisters Enchanted and who teaches astrology, told BI the community is very resilient.However, those who don't acknowledge that there are always two possibilities will lead people to "lose trust."For example, on Election Day, there was a "tug of war" in the stars and planets "between the old and the new, Trump and Harris," Walka said."An astrologer has to acknowledge that this could lead to either path dependent on the collective," she said.Walka added that, in general, she saw astrologists skewing toward desiring a Harris win."I think the certainty that astrologers had in predicting a Harris win would have contributed to the shock and dismay many felt when that was not the case," she said."This will contribute to that overall feeling of not knowing who or what to trust in the short term."

Trump's election victory put TikTok's astrology community into a meltdown

As more votes are counted in the coming days and months, more precise data on the shape of the 2024 electorate will be released.The youngest voters and those entering middle age tacked hard to the right. Gen X — which slightly favored president-elect Donald Trump with a one-point margin in 2020 — shifted 9 points toward Trump this cycle. Gen Z favored Vice President Kamala Harris by 11 points, compared to 24 points for President Joe Biden.Meanwhile, millennials and their boomer parents were less likely to move toward Trump. Millennials favored Harris by one point, a five-point shift down from Biden's six-point margin in 2020. Boomers went from supporting Trump by five points in 2020 to a flat tie between the two candidates this year, and were the only age group that voted more Democratic.Gen Z's big shift to the right wasn't entirely unexpected. Teens were twice as likely to identify as more conservative than their parents compared to millennials 20 years ago, per a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theupandup.us/p/gen-z-teens-conservative-shift-gallup-data">Gallup and Walton Family Foundation</a> study conducted last fall.The Trump campaign put a lot of focus on this age group. Andrew Heyward, a former president of CBS News, told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/07/business/media/trump-media-strategy-podcasts.html">The New York Times</a> that Trump has become a "master of evolving media" for partnering with online influencers and personalities. Trump frequently appeared on podcasts, streams, and TikToks <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://business.yougov.com/content/47483-whos-listening-to-the-joe-rogan-experience-men-mostly">consumed predominantly</a> by Gen Z and millennial audiences, including The Joe Rogan Experience.That strategy may have convinced younger voters that the GOP gets them better than the Democrats. "People don't really vote for what they want, they vote for who they are," Jason Brennan, a professor of strategy, public policy, and economics at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business, told BI."I think a lot of young men look at the messaging of Democrats and are turned off by it," Brennan said, and it could at least partially explain the generational shifts.Gen Z's Gen X-er parents — or at least some of them — are also tilting right, as the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/typical-gen-x-debt-net-worth-income-earnings-caregiving-stress-2021-8">forgotten middle child</a> of generations dramatically shifted toward Trump.Gen X already disapproved of Biden the most among generations, per <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.npr.org/2023/12/27/1217878506/gen-x-conservative-disapprove-biden">late 2023 polling from NPR, PBS NewsHour, and Marist</a>.Their role stuck between caring for children and aging parents <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-gen-x-sandwich-generation-tasked-with-parents-kids-care-2022-4">has them</a> in an especially precarious economic spot. They're the generation <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-x-age-income-debt-forgotten-middle-child-struggling-financially-2023-12">most likely</a> to say that they don't feel financially secure. Many are concerned about saving for retirement, while some continue to be stressed out about homebuying. Some long for the success of their boomer and silent generation parents, Amy Walter, a nonpartisan political analyst with The Cook Political Report, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.npr.org/2023/12/27/1217878506/gen-x-conservative-disapprove-biden">told NPR</a>.Meanwhile, boomers are a bit more of a puzzle, according to Brennan. Their shift might come down to a dark demographic reality— male boomers are more likely to die earlier than their female counterparts, and women tend to be more likely to vote Democratic than men. If you open X or TikTok right now, you might be convinced that Vice President<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/business-leaders-that-kamala-harris-could-recruit-for-cabinet-2024-10"> Kamala Harris</a> is going to win the presidential election in a landslide. Donald Trump's lead is disappearing, even in red states, people say, pointing to fringe polls and purported quotes from campaign insiders. Florida and Texas are turning blue. More women and young people have registered to vote. And some believe the stars are aligning and astrological clues point to her definitive ascendence to the top job.Or, depending on what your feed looks like, you might see that Trump has this one in the bag. These believers cite a flood of MAGA hats in California, or a phalanx of children dressed as Trump (and, disturbingly, Trump's would-be assassin) for Halloween in blue Philadelphia. Or that there's less support for Harris among some demographics in swing states compared to when President <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-biden-maga-supporters-puerto-rico-election-2024-10">Joe Biden</a> won in 2020. New Hampshire and Virginia are turning red. Even X owner and Trump megadonor Elon Musk is extrapolating and framing early voting data to prematurely declare the prized swing state of Pennsylvania "will be a decisive Republican victory."In an election cycle where national and swing-state polls have been neck and neck for weeks, voters are taking to X and TikTok to confidently declare their candidate will win decisively. It's a response to a time of extreme anxiety and uncertainty, when Americans are more polarized than ever and have been told "this will be the last election" if their candidate does not win. There are maps covered in blue and opposing ones covered in red, with Electoral College predictions swaying wildly. "Harris is about to win in a blowout," one says. Others, Musk included, point to an electoral map based on Polymarket election-betting odds, rather than polls, as evidence that Trump will win. Each individual post might not be so significant — if it weren't for powerful algorithms on TikTok and X that relentlessly push such posts out to others.This is the type of content that social sites' algorithms have long loved. Social-media conversations gather around extremes. People at the farthest ends of the ideological spectrum are most likely to post their views on social media, a 2021 study from the Pew Research Center found. Social platforms' algorithms reward "this strong confidence and extreme opinions and engenders extreme reactions," says Ioana Literat, an associate professor at Columbia University's Teachers College and the coauthor of "Not Your Parents' Politics: Understanding Young People's Political Expression on Social Media." "If there's a video that says, 'Polls are too close to tell,' that's not going to be the post that gets the most likes."While the algorithms are in part to blame, we also have a deeply human aversion to uncertainty. To quiet the noise, we surround ourselves with others who feel confident that our shared candidate will win.Other social platforms have sought to disentangle themselves from this kind of divisive political speech. In 2016, much brazen political dialogue took place on Facebook, where your opinionated uncle posted misinformation with abandon. For the past few years, Meta has pushed news out of Facebook feeds. And earlier this year, the company made further moves to de-emphasize political content on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. All of this follows accusations that Facebook basically "destroyed democracy," as Megan Smith, the former chief technology officer of the United States, put it. Despite the efforts to change, deceptive political ads are still widespread on Facebook and Instagram, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.propublica.org/article/facebook-instagram-meta-deceptive-political-ads-election">ProPublica reported</a> this week. Meta's "enforcement systems had already detected and disabled a large portion of the Pages — and we reviewed and took action against the remainder of these Pages for various policy violations," Tracy Clayton, a Meta spokesperson, said in a statement to ProPublica.Since the 2016 and 2020 elections, the political reach of both X and TikTok have grown. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/politics/elections/x-twitter-political-content-election-2024-28f2dadd">Wall Street Journal analysis</a> found that newly created X accounts were often fed political content, even if they signed up looking for other topics, and that content leaned more heavily toward pro-Trump sentiments. (X did not respond to a request to comment on this story.) Meanwhile, half of the 18- to 29-year-olds surveyed by the Pew Research Center saying they watch political content on TikTok. A TikTok spokesperson declined to comment for this story but directed me to a webpage that says TikTok's policy is to label "unverified election claims, make them ineligible for recommendation, and prompt people to reconsider before sharing them."The overconfident rhetoric isn't just polarizing; it could have more dangerous implications. "If one side is expecting the race to be a blowout and the other side wins, that sort of lays the groundwork for broad support for challenging the results," says Sol Messing, a research associate professor at New York University's Center for Social Media and Politics. (Messing previously worked for Twitter but says he volunteered to be laid off when Musk bought the platform in 2022, and he refused severance to avoid signing a non-disparagement agreement.) "Parts of this may reflect this broader, far-right strategy," he added.On X, there is now an Election Integrity Community, launched by Musk's America PAC in late October. Here, people are encouraged to "share potential incidents of voter fraud or irregularities you see while voting in the 2024 election" — sightings they would typically report to official government agencies for investigation. Many of the recent posts show clear support for Trump in their claims of voting fraud and interference: On Thursday, one user posted photos of what appeared to be Ohio voting ballots with Trump's name misprinted. Election officials, however, say they have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/10/31/ohio-election-officials-say-altered-trump-name-on-ballot-likely-a-hoax/75969483007/">not seen such ballots</a>.While Trump has repeatedly said that the only way he'd lose is through election fraud, many posts from candidates and their famous endorsers don't express the same swaggering confidence we see across feeds. Ads for Harris on Instagram implore people to get to the polls and donate more money, calling it "an all-hands-on-deck moment." Michelle Obama says the race "is too close," and "we have to give it everything we've got." And even Trump is back to posting on X, urging people to vote early — a shift from 2020, when he demonized mail-in voting.No one on social media has the answer to what will happen in Tuesday's election. Anxiously reposting or liking election content may feel like the only thing we can do as the clock ticks down. "We know it's a period of really high anxiety," says Literat. "This is definitely shaped by the context. But it's also that content that really offers certainty or that resonates with hope or with fears that's spread more rapidly, too."
