Harnaaz Sandhu becomes the third Indian to be crowned Miss Universe

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu told People she has been bullied online for gaining weight.</li><li>She said people's comments made her "break down" before public appearances.</li></ul><p>Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu said she has been bullied online in recent months in a new interview with <a href="https://people.com/health/miss-universe-harnaaz-sandhu-weigh-gain-online-bullies/">People</a>. </p><p>The 22-year-old, who was representing India when she was <a href="https://www.insider.com/new-miss-universe-miss-india-harnaaz-sandhu-2021-12">crowned Miss Universe in December 2021 in Eilat, Israel</a>, told People she has gained weight since she was crowned.</p><p>"Physically I have kind of grown, got more pounds and increased my weight, which I am totally comfortable about right now," she said, going on to say that she started exercising less after she won the competition so she could enjoy eating and spending time with her loved ones.</p><div type="image" title="Miss India at Miss Universe 2021" height="1333" width="1778" msid="93377280" hostid="261" sizebytes="134018"></div><p>"I was really focused towards my goal and I was [not] thinking about my health," <a href="https://www.insider.com/steve-harvey-miss-india-meow-miss-universe-2021-12">Sandhu</a> told People of her mindset about exercise before the Miss Universe pageant. "The whole time we were working out, doing so many activities, and just after winning, I had almost a month just to relax."</p><p>Sandhu said she was also diagnosed with multiple food allergies, including gluten, eggs, soy, and coconut, all of which were impacting her health. </p><p>Although Sandhu didn't care that she gained weight, she said she was bothered by people who criticized her online because of it.</p><p>"I was bullied for gaining weight," she told People. "It was kind of uncomfortable and really surprising for me to see how people started having their opinions, which should not really matter. "This is the purpose of my life. Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray and "Access Hollywood" correspondent Zuri Hall, who has hosted the last two Miss USA competitions, will give commentary backstage.</p><p>This year's show marks the first time in five years that Miss Universe won't be hosted by Steve Harvey, who famously <a href="https://www.insider.com/steve-harvey-congratulated-wrong-miss-universe-contestant-again-2021-12">announced the wrong winner</a> in 2015 and had Sandhu <a href="https://www.insider.com/steve-harvey-miss-india-meow-miss-universe-2021-12">meow onstage</a> in 2021. </p><div type="image" title="Miss Universe 2021" height="1333" width="1777" msid="96923508" hostid="261" sizebytes="200914"></div><p>Amy Emmerich, the CEO of the Miss Universe Organization, told <a href="https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/miss-universe-pageant-stream-roku-channel-2023-1235451201/">Variety</a> that, after the organization's five-year contract with Harvey and Fox came to an end this year, she wanted to "make sure we led with a female lens this next go-around." </p><p>"It was a rare opportunity to be able to kind of restart in a whole new place," she added. </p><p>This year's Miss Universe will also be the first led by new owner Anne Jakapong Jakrajutatip and her Thailand-based company, JKN Global Group. </p><p>It was announced in October 2022 that Jakrajutatip would become <a href="https://www.insider.com/miss-universe-pageant-sold-to-businesswoman-2022-10">the first woman to own Miss Universe</a>. She is the third richest transgender person in the world with an estimated worth of $210 million, according to <a href="https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/2286822/a-pioneer-reveals-clues-to-success">Bangkok Post.</a></p><p>"The first woman to own the brand, that's going to be a change in and of itself for 70 years," Emmerich told Variety. "And I think especially because of Anne's backstory, and what she feels transformational leadership is and how she can really fight for a future borne by women a little bit more than possibly a man at IMG could."</p><p>It's been a controversial few months for the pageant community. Shortly after Gabriel won Miss USA in October, contestants claimed that <a href="https://www.insider.com/miss-usa-pageant-controversy-explained-2022-10">the pageant had been rigged in her favor.</a>  An investigation was launched and Miss USA president Crystle Stewart was suspended indefinitely.</p><p>Many Miss USA 2022 contestants also said the organization gave them <a href="https://www.insider.com/miss-usa-contestants-said-they-had-no-mental-health-support-2022-10#:~:text=Although%20Stewart%20offered%20two%20mental,their%20weight%20and%20their%20looks.">no mental-health support during the pageant</a> despite pledging to make it a priority following <a href="https://www.insider.com/former-miss-usa-cheslie-kryst-dead-30-2022-1">Miss USA 2019 Cheslie Kryst's death</a> in January 2022. </p>

She's the first Filipino American to win Miss USA. </p><p>Her win as Miss USA made headlines when multiple <a href="https://www.insider.com/miss-usa-pageant-controversy-explained-2022-10">contestants claimed that the pageant had been rigged</a> in her favor. </p><p>"I would never enter any pageant or any competition that I know I would win," Gabriel told <a href="https://www.eonline.com/news/1349398/miss-usa-2022-rbonney-gabriel-responds-to-allegation-her-win-was-rigged">E! News</a> on October 6. "I have a lot of integrity. I want to be transparent, and I want everybody to know that there was no unfair advantage and nothing was rigged."</p>

Let's hear your best one."</p><div type="image" title="Miss India at the 2021 Miss Universe pageant" height="1333" width="1777" msid="88247514" hostid="261"></div><p>"Oh, my God, Steve, I was not expecting to do this on the world stage," she told him.</p><p>But she took it all in stride.</p><p>"I have to do this — I have no other option," she joked.</p><p>Sandu said that since she loved cats she would do her best to impersonate one.</p><p>"Brace yourself everyone," she warned, before letting out a few impressive "meows."</p><p>It was a moment that stood out to many viewers, who questioned why Sandhu hadn't been given a meaningful moment to share more about herself.</p><p>Miss Panama Brenda Smith was able to talk about getting a position at the UN, and Miss Great Britain Emma Collingridge discussed how learning about Medusa's origin story inspired her to fight against gender-based violence.</p><p>Sandhu, 21, is a women's-empowerment advocate who has helped her mother teach women's health and hygiene at camps.</p><p>The pageant queen works as an actor and told Insider she'd done two Punjabi feature films that would be released soon.</p><p>Sandhu said she always chose strong characters because she wanted to "break stereotypes of what women are and what they can be."</p><p>"I hope I get to inspire people by following my passion and my heart," she added.</p>
