"Children are often denied an education because there are no government schools in this village. To attend school, they need to travel almost 5 km to Pandariya village," admits farmer Bhairon Singh <keyword id="2656462" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jatav" source="Orion">Jatav</keyword>, who owns a 1.25-acre farm. But these problems fall small compared to the need for educational facilities here, which affect the future of our children." Ten years ago, an Anganwadi was set up in rented accommodation. The structure is lying in shambles now. <keyword id="6446052" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="shut" source="Orion">Shut</keyword> since last five years, it is being used as a shelter for animals," Ballobai laments. She believes it to be wiser to elect women for the Gram Panchayat, as they "might take the access to educational facilities more seriously compared to previous male representatives." The sarpanch and 20 panchayat members of this all-women panchayat were elected unopposed this year. The panchayat members elected by this village of 3,842 people are a heterogenous lot comprising graduates, those who are contesting elections for the first time, and also those who have only studied up to fifth grade. Interestingly, although the sarpanch's seat was reserved for a Backward Caste (OBC) candidate without specific gender priority, 22-year-old housewife Krishna Rawat was elected as the sarpanch. In the previous term, though the panchayat was led by a woman - Shakun Neemnarayan - the rest of the panchayat members were male. Local resident Misribai told 101Reporters: "Besides education, roads, and drainage, the garbage dump in <keyword id="310458" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="adampur" source="Orion">Adampur</keyword> is a big issue. The stench and leachate from this dump have contaminated the waters of Adampur and <keyword id="83223" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="haripur" source="Orion">Haripur</keyword> villages too. Since a year and a half, when I moved to this village, I have been seeing children attend schools in neighbouring villages. Thus, I have prioritised the setting up of a government primary or middle school here." Explaining the seriousness of the landfill issue, she added: "There was a lot of opposition by villagers when the landfill was shifted here by the City Corporation. It now poses a major problem. The only solution regarding the landfill is to ensure that it is maintained with due diligence. We will start off by filing complaints. If these produce no results, we will resort to protests." Rawat believes that the leachate from the garbage landfill is affecting the water resources of neighbouring villages, and orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) are not being followed. Based on the prize money announcement to an unopposed all-women panchayat, newly elected Rashmi awaits to disburse the amount for the school construction plan. CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan had declared a 15 lakh cash incentive for a collectively agreed upon all-women panchayat. Furthermore, she points out: "There have been no roads built in our village since 2019. Neither are there enough drains; the few existing ones are in a state of disrepair. We have hence commenced work on building drains while preparing to handle the other jobs in due course." But today, I'm proud of her for taking on the reins of the village."

Kolkata, Apr 21 () Most parts of the Hooghlydistrict in West Bengal was declared as COVID-19 containmentzones by the state government, a senior official said onTuesday.All wards of the municipalities of Uttarpara Kotrang, Dankuni, Srerampore, Rishra, Konnagar, Baidyabati,Champadani, Chandannagar, Bhadreshwar have been identified asCOVID-19 containment zones, he said.The gram panchayats of Raghunathpur in SreramporeUttarpara block, Kumirmora, Bhagwatipur, Haripur of ChanditalaI block and Garalgacha, Barijhati of Chanditala II, Mundalika,Kotalpur and Dilakhas under the Hooghly (Rural) PoliceDistrict have also been identified as containment areas, anorder issued by the office of the district magistrate said.Areas under the gram panchayats of Rashidpur,Rajbhalhat I, Rabhalhat II of Jangipara block have been alsobeen declared containment zones, the order stated.Though there have not been many cases in thedistrict, we are imposing the restrictions as a precautionarymeasure to contain the spread of the virus. (Eds: Updating with data; adding more details) Chandigarh, Apr 9 () With 22 confirmed COVID-19 cases, Jawaharpur village of Dera Bassi in Punjab's Mohali district has become a new coronavirus hotspot in the state, officials said on Thursday.Overall, Mohali district has topped the COVID-19 tally in Punjab with 37 cases."One more positive case in Jawaharpur," Mohali Deputy Commissioner Girish Dayalan tweeted on Thursday.Till Wednesday, Jawaharpur reported a total of 21 cases.The health authorities in Mohali district are conducting extensive sampling of the contacts of the coronavirus patients. The district administration has completely sealed the entry points to the village -- located near Delhi-Ambala National Highway and deployed police to stop the movement of people."House to house survey on in neighbouring villages also. 54 more samples taken. Total samples taken in district is 629," said Dayalan."Meanwhile, the district administration has prepared a contingency plan to quarantine potential patients in case of geometric increase in subsequent stages of pandemic," Dayalan added.Dayalan said the administration has ample quarantine facilities but an acute spike may require segregation of COVID-19 positive patients."Patients from densely populated areas or slums can't be home quarantined so to check the spread of contagion, it is necessary to earmark places where they can be made to stay," he said.In line with this, the district administration has tied up with Chandigarh University which has provided a dedicated 1,000 bed isolation facility.Similarly, to minimise response time, the administration has sought support from higher education institutions in the district to reserve their vacant hostels for quarantine purposes.The symptomatic cases would be quarantined in various hospitals while the asymptomatic cases need to be quarantined away from home so as to ensure that the community spread doesn't take place, he said.Dayalan exhorted the educational institutions to share information about vacant hostel rooms with the district administration, conceding to which they furnished the approximate number of rooms/halls/classrooms that could be used as a quarantine facility, on the spot.
