New Delhi, Home-grown mobile devices maker <keyword id="250883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lava-international" source="Orion">Lava International</keyword> has elevated its President <keyword id="13650999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sunil-Raina" source="Orion">Sunil Raina</keyword> as Whole Time Director and interim managing director with immediate effect, the company said on Tuesday. He will handle the company's business in place of Lava's Managing Director Hari Om Rai who is in the custody of Enforcement Directorate for his alleged involvement in money laundering case filed against Chinese mobile devices company Vivo. "Raina will assume the role of interim managing director with immediate effect, following approval by the company's board in its meeting on November 6, 2023," Lava said in a statement. With an overall experience of more than two decades, Raina has been an integral part of Lava International for the past 13 years, previously serving as President and Business Head. Raina leads Lava's operations, ensuring that the company continues to innovate and grow while maintaining its commitment to 'Make in India', the statement said. "We are in a fast-paced growth phase of our brand journey and we see a great opportunity ahead. I'm pleased to take on this role and eager to contribute to Lava's continued success through consistent innovation and delivering exceptional quality to our consumers," Raina said. The company in early October announced plans to capture 10 per cent market share in under Rs 30,000-priced smartphone segment on account of up to Rs 600 crore investment in product development and marketing in the next two years. Lava is the only Indian mobile devices maker left in the country after several home-grown companies succumbed to aggressive pricing coupled with pressure on businesses due to shift in GST regime and demonetisation in 2016 and 2017.

Lava International appoints Sunil Raina as interim managing director

A top <keyword id="12163" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ED" source="Orion">ED</keyword> source told that the agency has arrested four accused who have been identified as Guangwen Kyang aka Andrew Kuang, the Chinese National; Hari Om Rai, the MD of Lava International; Rajan Malik, and Nitin Garg, the Chartered Accountant (CA). The ED action comes almost more than a year after it carried out searches at 48 locations across the country belonging to <keyword id="3180567" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vivo-mobiles" source="Orion">vivo Mobiles</keyword> India Private Limited and its 23 associated companies such as Grand Prospect International Communication Pvt Ltd (GPICPL). According to the ED, vivo Mobiles India Pvt Ltd was incorporated on August 1, 2014 as a subsidiary of Multi Accord Ltd, a Hong Kong based company and was registered at ROC Delhi. GPICPL was registered on December 3, 2014 at ROC Shimla, with registered addresses of Solan, Himachal Pradesh and Gandhinagar, Jammu. "The said company was incorporated by Zhengshen Ou, Bin Lou and Zhang Jie with the help of Nitin Garg, CA. Bin Lou left India on April 26, 2018. Zhengshen Ou and Zhang Jie left India in 2021," the financial probe agency had said. The ED probe had revealed that the PMLA investigation by ED was initiated by registering a money laundering case on February 3, 2022 on the basis of an FIR registered at the Kalkaji police station in the national capital by the Delhi Police under sections 417, 120B and 420 of IPC, 1860 against GPICPL and its Director, shareholders and certifying professionals, etc., on the basis of complaint filed by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. As per the FIR, GPICPL and its shareholders had used forged identification documents and falsified addresses at the time of incorporation. The allegations were found to be true as the investigation revealed that the addresses mentioned by the directors of GPICPL did not belong to them, but in fact it was a government building and house of a senior bureaucrat.

<ul><li>The Indian smartphone industry expects fewer or no increase in component duties for smartphones.</li><li>A 2.5 per cent customs duty on imports of electronics along with other factors led to an increase in smartphone prices.</li><li>For homegrown brands in particular, a separate budget to help bring more Indian smartphone brands is expected.</li></ul>In the 2021 Union Budget, a 2.5 per cent customs duty was imposed on the import of electronics. This was in line with the Indian government’s larger plan to boost local manufacturing of electronics. Higher duties on components would lead to smartphone companies relying on local production in the country. But this also led to an increase in smartphone prices along with other factors such as the ongoing global chip shortage. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/budget" data-type="tilCustomLink">Union Budget 2022</a> will be announced on February 1 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharam, and this year fewer or no increases in component duties are expected from the smartphone industry. According to Hari Om Rai, chairman and managing director of phone maker Lava International, there are two major demands from the industry. One is to not impose any “further increase in component duties in this budget as it impacts our global competitiveness.” The other demand is to create a separate budget for homegrown brands. “We are looking at creating economies of scale to create global competitiveness, [and] value-addition will follow,” Rai said. Lava is among the few Indian smartphone brands that still operate and launch products. Other brands like Intex Technologies and Karbonn Mobiles shut shop primarily due to the influx of Chinese brands in the country. Lava launched its first 5G smartphone ‘Agni 5G’ in India last November. Another Indian smartphone brand still floating is Micromax, which made a comeback last year with new smartphones and wireless earbuds as well. But the majority of the Indian smartphone market is occupied by Chinese brands including Xiaomi, Vivo, Realme and Oppo, according to quarterly data from Counterpoint Research. It launched budget smartphones under ₹10,000, and it also launched tablets under its product portfolio. The brand is now focusing on expanding its smart home segment with its IoT ecosystem ‘tronX’. Another homegrown and Bengaluru-based startup Creo that tried its luck not only in smartphones but a custom OS as well. Founded by former Hike employees, Creo had launched the <a href="https://www.techradar.com/in/news/hike-acquires-creo-the-makers-of-os-centric-mark-1-smartphone">Mark 1 smartphone</a> that ran on Android-based Fuel OS. The company soon decided to end production of the device and focus on Fuel OS. According to Upasana Joshi, research manager, client devices at IDC India, Indian smartphone brands “continue to struggle in comparison to global or Chinese players owing to the large scale of business and acceptability in the market.” One way of helping bring up more Indian smartphone brands would be a separate budget to build “National Champions” according to Rai. “To acquire strategic skills and become global Indian champions have a remarkable potential to create national wealth and become beacons of economic progress for India's long term technological and financial independence. It is highly imperative to develop and bolster Indian champions to bring strategic skills and technology and augment GDP, employment, and foreign exchange,” Rai said. Another expectation is “huge investments to match production, marketing and operational spends in a consolidated smartphone market like India,” according to Joshi. For the smartphone industry in general, <keyword id="10547300" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget-2022" source="Orion">Budget 2022</keyword> is expected to continue the “push for establishing component factories and making them available locally, along with fewer exemptions,” Joshi added. But we may continue to see smartphone prices increasing even in 2022. “IDC expects ASPs (average selling price) for smartphones to only rise further and peak annually,” Joshi said. Regardless, as per research firm Counterpoint, India's smartphone market revenue crossed $38 billion in 2021 with 27 per cent (on-year) growth, as shipments grew 11 per cent to reach 169 million units. It would be interesting to see how the upcoming budget will aid the existing Indian manufacturers to bolster their share to survive, unlike their counterparts that had to quit the business. Indian company <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/India-Taking-Baby-Steps-To-Become-The-Next-Manufacturing-Hub/articleshow/44959302.cms">Lava</a> will invest Rs 2,615 Crores over the next seven years to set up two <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=manufacturing">manufacturing</a> units in the country. Once they are up and going, the factories would have a total manufacturing capacity of 18 million sets every month. 
 "We have put in place a plan to invest Rs 2,615 crore to set up two more manufacturing units in India -- one in the north and the other in South India," <keyword id="6355189" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="lava">Lava</keyword> International Chairman and MD <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Hari+Om+Rai+">Hari Om Rai </a>told PTI. 
 
He added that the decision would be funded internally. "Some portion of the earmarked amount will also go into research and development," he added. 
 
The company is in discussion with several state governments and would come at a conclusion in the next three weeks. The second unit would be launched in 2017.

In a bid to make India a major export hub for its handsets in the next few years, domestic handset maker <keyword id="6355189" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="lava">Lava</keyword> will invest about Rs 200 crore over 18 months on strengthening its design and testing operations in the country. 
	Currently, the company has a team of about 250 people here working on these areas and a larger team of around 550 in China.

	 
	"We are making India a major manufacturing hub and in process, we are expanding design, testing and R&amp;D teams also. We will invest about Rs. 200 crores in the next one-one and half years," Lava International CMD Hari Om Rai told PTI.

	 
	He added the company will more than double the head-count in these areas.

	 
	"We will bring the entire manufacturing ecosystem to India. Our plan is to expand exporting to other countries next year and hopefully, by 2019, we will export to China itself," he said.

	 
	The plan to ramp up capacity is in line with that vision, Rai added.

	 
	In July, Lava had said it will invest Rs. 2,615 crores over the next seven years to set up two manufacturing units in India. Once operational, the units will have a combined capacity of 18 million handsets per month.

	 
	Global handset makers like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=samsung">Samsung </a>and domestic players like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Micromax">Micromax</a> and Spice have assembly units in India.

	 Recently, international players like <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword>, Gionee and Asus have announced assembly units in India in partnership with electronics major Foxconn in Andhra Pradesh. 
	Handset makers are looking to tap the multi-billion dollar opportunity in India, one of the fastest growing smartphone markets in the world.

	 
	The Indian handset industry is poised to overtake the US as the second-largest market in the next few years. According to research firm IDC, smartphone shipment in India grew 21.4 per cent year-on-year to 28.3 million units in July-September 2015 quarter.

	 Lava ranked fifth in the tally with 4.7 percent market share, after <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> (24 percent), <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> (16.7 percent), Intex (10.8 percent) and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Lenovo">Lenovo</a> Group (Lenovo and Motorola) (9.5 percent).
