<ul class="summary-list"><li>"<a href="https://trk.hbomax.com/aff_c?offer_id=5&amp;aff_id=1012" rel="nofollow sponsored">Hacks</a>" cocreator Jen Statsky told Insider she knows one of its leads can be "a real terror."</li><li><keyword id="12130066" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jean-smart" source="Orion">Jean Smart</keyword> plays the very flawed Deborah Vance on the show, which premiered its second season in May.</li></ul><p>Jen Statsky may have created the character of Deborah Vance on "<keyword id="11917212" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hacks" source="Orion">Hacks</keyword>," but even she knows the fictional comedy legend can be kind of terrible.</p><p>The critically-acclaimed "<a href="https://trk.hbomax.com/aff_c?offer_id=5&amp;aff_id=1012" rel="nofollow sponsored">Hacks</a>" returned to <keyword id="7849400" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hbo-max" source="Orion">HBO Max</keyword> for its second season on May 13. The first season, which won three Emmy awards out of its 15 total nominations, showcased the best and worst parts of <keyword id="6357280" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="workplace" source="Orion">workplace</keyword> culture against the lights of Las Vegas. It followed disgraced writer Ava Daniels (<keyword id="13930097" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hannah-einbinder" source="Orion">Hannah Einbinder</keyword>) reluctantly beginning to write jokes for Vance (Jean Smart) after a series of rogue tweets derailed her career. </p><p>Vance is a fascinating and complicated character who manages her team with a mixture of star power and cruelness, giving lavish gifts (like hand-me-down <a href="https://www.insider.com/conor-mcgregor-arrested-185000-bentley-seized-irish-independent-2022-3">Bentleys</a>) one minute, then cursing at, dismissing, and on rare occasions even <a href="https://www.insider.com/chris-rock-says-slapped-by-softest-person-will-smith-2022-5">slapping</a> employees the next.</p><p>"Deborah's an interesting case, because she values a hard worker. So I do think she's a good boss in the sense that if you work hard and are good at your job she rewards you," Statsky told Insider in a recent interview. "But I also think she can be a real terror." </p><div type="image" title="Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder in &quot;Hacks&quot;" height="1281" width="1708" msid="91813969" hostid="261"></div><p>Her embattled business manager (Carl Clemons-Hopkins), plucky personal assistant (Mark Indelicato), and personal blackjack dealer (Poppy Liu) remain committed to Deborah's insane requests and grueling expectations because they admire her and want her approval. Think a binge-drinking Miranda Priestley in a sequined bolero.</p><p>Season two sees the show "deepening the relationship between Deborah and Ava" and explores the complex power dynamics between employer and their employees, even in a "cool job."  </p><p>"I do think that her and Ava are real friends," Statsky told Insider when asked about Deborah and Ava's relationship. "Now granted, is it always complicated when someone is on your payroll? Of course."</p><p>That complication is a big part of season two. Ava, who turned on Vance by violating her non-disclosure agreement after a "very traumatic blowout fight" at the end of season one, faces the consequences of her actions when the new season begins.</p><div type="image" title="Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder star as Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels on &quot;Hacks&quot;" height="653" width="871" msid="91813971" hostid="261"></div>"I understand where she was coming from," Statsky said of Ava's actions. "Deborah slapped her, so Deborah shouldn't have done that." That said, she does not think Ava had the "healthiest reaction" to the altercation, especially since the character is always judging everyone around her. Season one saw Ava give impromptu history lessons and police the chosen terminology of everyone around her even as she neglected her parents, flaked on her friends, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/coercive-control-how-to-spot-emotionally-abusive-relationship-2022-5">manipulated</a> her ex-girlfriend. <p>"She's not as <a href="https://www.insider.com/hacks-hannah-einbinder-faith-ava-will-grow-022-5">emotionally evolved</a> and as good of a person as she should be for someone who calls people out that much," said Statsky. And in many ways, that makes Ava and her boss perfect foils — her actions are mirrored by Vance's poor parenting.</p><p>Season two does see Ava doing some evolving, "becoming less about calling out other people and more looking inward about becoming a better person herself," through acknowledging her similarities to Vance.</p><h2>The new season of 'Hacks' also features more of a look into the world around Deborah and Ava</h2><div type="image" title="Megan Stalter on &quot;Hacks.&quot;" height="1281" width="1708" msid="91813974" hostid="261"></div>Deborah earned her power on the stage, but Kayla (Megan Stalter) snatched hers at birth as the daughter of the owner of the <a href="https://www.insider.com/johnny-depp-demanded-20-million-handout-financial-woes-agent-2022-5">agency</a> representing both Ava and Deborah.<p>Kayla phones her job in, makes inappropriate jokes, and sexually harasses her boss — because she can. And if there's a problem? She runs to daddy.</p><p>"We're always talking about the show feeling real and grounded and reflecting the world as it is," said Statsky. "The truth is, there're a lot of women like Deborah who came from pretty much nothing and worked their way up and pounded the pavement and made it happen."</p><p>"And then there are a lot of people like Kayla," she continued. "They benefit from their family connection in the <keyword id="11896019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment" source="Orion">entertainment</keyword> industry. There're a lot of people like that in this industry as well."</p><p>Ava's mom Nina (played by Jane Adams, who <a href="https://www.insider.com/emmys-nominees-winners-list-2021-7#guest-actor-in-a-comedy-series-1">won</a> an Emmy for the role) is revisited this season, too. She exists away from "the industry" and is a reminder of the stakes that exist offstage. "Nina is just another example of a different type of woman whose life we wanted to explore," Statsky continued.</p><p>"In so many ways, we want the show to be about women and about all different types of women and women who took different paths in life," she added.</p><p>The first six episodes of "Hacks" season two are now streaming on <a href="https://trk.hbomax.com/aff_c?offer_id=5&amp;aff_id=1012" rel="nofollow sponsored">HBO Max</a>.</p>

So, it doesn't frustrate me," she explained. "I know in my heart that she will grow and mature and be better. So, I have faith in that."</p><div type="image" title="Hannah Einbinder." height="1280" width="1706" msid="91553871" hostid="261"></div> The actor did say that there is one downside to playing someone who monumentally screws up often, especially because her costar is a legend like Jean Smart. <p>"The truth is, Deborah Vance is a character, but she's played by Jean Smart. So, I am technically looking at Jean Smart," Einbinder said. "So, whenever Ava wrongs the person playing Deborah Vance, which is Jean Smart, it upsets me a little."</p><p>"I don't like for Jean to be wronged in any way even if she is playing another person," she added.</p><p>"Hacks" premiered the first two episodes <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/streaming/how-to-watch-hacks">of season two</a> on Thursday. The second episode, called "Quid Pro Quo," ended with Ava learning that Deborah was suing her for violating her NDA by sending the aforementioned email, though she was allowing Ava to stay on tour and continue working for her. </p><p>Einbinder said she thinks Ava "understands the weight" of her violation, especially because she can read the email back, as Deborah forces her to do. </p><h2>Megan Stalter says Kayla has 'delusional confidence'</h2><div type="image" title="Megan Stalter." height="1280" width="1706" msid="91553872" hostid="261"></div><p>In a separate interview, Insider spoke with Megan Stalter, who plays Kayla, the very bad office assistant of Ava and Deborah's manager Jimmy (Paul W. Downs). </p><p>Kayla has her job because her father owns part of the management company, and Stalter explained why her character's spoiled upbringing has actually helped her gain a rare trait. </p><p>"I think that what is <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-be-more-confident-2018-8">helpful is this delusional</a> confidence that he has given her. This self-love and feeling like you're special, I think he's given her that," Stalter said of Kayla's father, who is the reason why she has stayed on Jimmy's desk for so long. </p><p>Stalter said she understands Kayla, which helps her get in tune with the character's larger-than-life personality. </p><div type="image" title="Megan Stalter on &quot;Hacks.&quot;" height="1280" width="1706" msid="91553873" hostid="261"></div><p>"I think that I am a little bit delusional, in a good way. I know what's important in life, but I feel like when you're trying to act or be a comedian or [have] these big dreams, you have to be a little bit delusional," she said. </p><p>But Stalter told Insider that after being taken off of Jimmy's desk for wearing lingerie in front of him on a business trip and then reinstated to the job, there is positive change in store for Kayla, too. </p><p>"I think that she has such a big heart, that there's moments where you definitely see her putting Jimmy first or <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-impress-your-boss-according-to-manager-2018-10">trying to impress him</a> and care for him," she said, noting that despite some bumps, they'll be taking their relationship up "an extra level" this season. </p><p>New episodes of "Hacks" are released Thursdays on <keyword id="7849400" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hbo-max" source="Orion">HBO Max</keyword>. </p>

'Hacks' star Hannah Einbinder says she has 'faith' that Ava will 'grow and mature' in season 2

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The season three finale of "Hacks" brought big changes for Deborah Vance — and everyone in her entourage.</li><li>That includes Marcus, Deborah's business partner, and Damien, her personal assistant. </li></ul><p><em>Warning: Spoilers ahead for the season three finale of "Hacks."</em></p><p>"Hacks" is a series that has grown wiser and more audacious with time — and that goes for its characters as well.</p><p>Stand-up comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) has finally hit it big in the wake of her comedy special. But despite cutting her protégé Ava (Hannah Einbinder) loose at the end of season two to pursue her own projects, Deborah brings Ava back into the fold to help her campaign for a late-night hosting gig. Her single-minded pursuit of the job upends not only her life but that of everyone in her professional orbit.</p><p>That includes Marcus (Carl Clemons-Hopkins), the CEO of Deborah's company, who struggles to set boundaries between his personal and work life, and Damien (Mark Indelicato), Deborah's endlessly devoted personal assistant. </p><p>By the end of season three of this Max series, which streamed earlier this week, Marcus is ready to leave Deborah's side. That means ending their long-standing professional relationship and coming to terms with the way Deborah has treated him as a business partner and one of her most ardent fans. It also means that Damien, by the end of the season, is left inconsolable on the floor as he realizes he's about to take on much more responsibility.</p><p>As Clemons-Hopkins remarked to Business Insider, it's notable that Marcus and Damien are two separate characters in Deborah's entourage — something the actor says brings the show closer to reality.</p><p>"It could have been easy to make the 'gay assistant,' and what you end up having are two very, very different human beings who have very different approaches to their job," they told BI.</p><p>Clemons-Hopkins and Indelicato spoke with BI about how that division has allowed both of their characters to grow and what it means to work on a show — and more importantly, a set — that feels safe as a queer actor.</p><div type="image" title="carl clemons-hopkins as marcus in hacks. they're wearing a greens shirt and looking skeptically down a table at deborah vance, played by jean smart" height="1280" width="1707" msid="110617758" hostid="261" sizebytes="73472"></div><p><strong>Marcus and Damien are very different iterations of this "staff to a famous person" archetype frequently seen in film and TV. What's your understanding of playing a more nuanced version of that character? Did you ever speak with people who had worked in a position like this?</strong></p><p><strong>Carl Clemons-Hopkins</strong>: I didn't get to go that route, but I have witnessed and been in the presence of certain company managers or people, mostly in the theatrical world, that were closer to huge stars, Tony winners, and whatnot. And with this show, one thing I was really excited about was the fact that these are two separate characters. …They have their own skill sets. They have their own connection, relationship, and edification of Deborah's world, which has been really helpful to play with, but also, I think much closer to these individuals who have the staff.</p><p><strong>Mark Indelicato</strong>: And while they're very different, I would say that there is a common denominator that definitely bonds them, which is their commitment to their job. Approaching Damien, I went the route of trying to channel some of my favorite assistants that are in the same ilk, namely Tony Hale on "Veep," you know what I mean? Tell me a bit about filming that.</strong></p><p><strong>Indelicato</strong>: It was a real reminder for me of how much work and how many bodies go into these very small snippets that you see. We started it, and I started jogging, and they were like, 'You need to run." I was like, "No, I'm running." And they were like, "No, no, no." And so by the end of it, I did throw up after. I mean, I'm not in any kind of physical shape, and to be doing it for three hours?</p><p>But watching the opening of that episode, I was so pleased with the way that it turned out. It's the essence of Damien, right? Running down a tarmac screaming it's an emergency, only to find out that it was about sunglasses.</p><p><strong>Carl, I want to talk about Marcus' arc this season because he's trying to set boundaries with Deborah — but he's not only a workaholic, he's also a fan of his boss. Toward the end of the season, when he decides to step away from Deborah, what's going through his head?</strong></p><p><strong>Clemons-Hopkins</strong>: Something to keep in mind is that … these are business partners. He runs Deborah Vance Inc. He created the House of Vance. He oversees all this merchandise. It's no longer what I'm doing for my favorite comedian, and now it's — I need to mind my business. And I also love that it doesn't really fully answer the question. We're still left with <em>What is he going to do? How is he going to get Damien off this floor? How is he going to exit? What are the next moments going to be?</em> </p><p><strong>Damien sobbing on the floor in the season finale after he realizes that Marcus is leaving is such a transition point for both characters, but it's also incredibly funny. Mark, when you said, "I don't want to talk to vendors," as you're speaking with Marcus is <em>so</em> good.</strong></p><p><strong>Indelicato</strong>: In the room on the day, I was in Carl's arms, and Lucia, Jen, and Paul were screaming at me over the loudspeaker, just being like, "Keep crying, keep crying, we're coming up with something right now. 'I don't want to talk to vendors. I don't know how to work Excel.'" And so the energy filming that scene was so high. Thank you to literally every single person in that room to keep my energy up and keep it moving because I was very nervous about doing it.</p><p><strong>Clemons-Hopkins</strong>: I was too. It's weird.</p><p><strong>What made you both nervous about it?</strong></p><p><strong>Indelicato</strong>: For me, the scene was less about what Damien is going to be doing than it is about the way Marcus feels about leaving Deborah essentially in the lurch, and can Damien take on this responsibility at a moment's notice. Listen, I'm stoked about the idea of Damien's new job, personally, but I fear for him.</p><p><strong>Clemons-Hopkins: </strong>You always are going to be a bit nervous when you know you're about to shake up someone's world. And the way they set it up, you don't see it in the scene, but it starts mid-meeting and Mark's delivery of, like, I'm saying all this stuff. And he goes, "Okay," like, am I being trained for something? And then watching it add up.</p><p><strong>Indelicato</strong>: I cannot stress enough how much fun Carl and I had that evening, whenever we filmed it. You know that something is going well when the camera operators are laughing; the boom operators are laughing. As actors, what does it mean to be on a set like that? And narratively, what's it like working on material that isn't a coming-out story and just having these characters exist?</strong></p><p><strong>Clemons-Hopkins:</strong> I find it very affirming in the sense that I don't get up and have my gay coffee and then go for a gay walk. I'm not putting on my Black shoes and listening to my tall music. That's just not what's happening.</p><p>And so to be in a work environment, first and foremost, and then to be telling a story that inclusive in the non-identity politics way, but inclusive in the fact that — we're having this conversation, and you're wearing a green top. We're not going into the history of the dye. We're not going into why Hunter Green is called Hunter, because that's not what the point is. The point is we're having this conversation. So it's a very refreshing thing. It's also just really true to life.</p><p><strong>Indelicato</strong>: Carl and I have been doing this for a long time, and I think when I was making "Ugly Betty," it was a very lonely place to be a queer person in this industry on a show. Most of the time, you're the only queer person in your vicinity, and so I would echo the fact that it feels affirming, but it's safe. It feels really, really safe.</p><p>I've said this before, but if you're not a queer person on "Hacks," you're an ally in every sense of the word. And I think that semblance of safety also allows you as an artist to be freer. If you feel safe, then you can do whatever you want and not feel that there would be any kind of repercussion for whatever it is that you're choosing to do in the context of your art.</p><p>We're encouraged to be as queer as possible. That's the subtext of the show, in a certain way. …And I think that I can speak for every single one of us that we feel this sense of freedom working on the show.</p><p><strong>I know that's not always common.</strong></p><p><strong>Indelicato</strong>: It's not normal. It's surely not industry standard; let's just put it that way.</p><p><strong>Clemons-Hopkins</strong>: Not yet.</p><p><strong>Indelicato</strong>: Not yet. We're working on it. But it's actually the home of some of the network's riskiest and most interesting offerings, from uncomfortable dramedy "I Hate Suzie" to reality competition "Legendary" to science-fiction epic "Raised by Wolves."</p><p>Despite being a straight-to-streamer original for the legacy network, "Hacks" (<a href="https://deadline.com/2021/06/hacks-renewed-season-2-hbo-max-1234771529/">which just announced a second-season order</a>) is the latest in a long line of prestige HBO series about complicated women who are allowed to be as unapologetically selfish, messy, conflicted, and unlikable as they would if they were men. The show uses their experiences to explore the ways that a generation of supposed growth and increased equality for women hasn't really changed much in the world of entertainment.</p><p>Sure, their humor reflects the world that each has come up in. Deborah prefers jokes with a punchline, often with a self-deprecating streak that masks painful truths. One such bit is the way she's allowed the world to believe she burned down her husband's house, embracing the untrue label of a crazy ex because at least the lie got her gigs.</p><p>She hails from a generation that's been taught to grin and bear pain, rather than share those experiences with others. To her, the most important thing about a joke is that it's funny - not that it's necessarily true.</p><p>Ava, for her part, prides herself on being unfiltered and honest, leaning into the sort of weird, uncomfortable humor that plays well on social media or leaves audiences unsure of whether they're supposed to laugh at all. For her, comedy is meant to say something, and if it doesn't, there's not much point to it.</p><p>That both these women will come to ultimately understand each other's sensibilities and points of view is a foregone conclusion - it's practically why the show exists, after all. But "Hacks"<em> </em>deftly strikes a balance between its two leads, accepting both for who they are.</p><p>This is a show that could have mocked Deborah as old and out of touch, always a step behind Ava's modern zingers. Or it could have punched down, using Ava as another reason to trash millennial culture, citing comedy as just another thing her generation has destroyed.</p><p>Instead, it does neither. "Hacks"<em> </em>embraces the humanity in both characters, and never casts either as the butt of the jokes it's telling.</p><p>Moments that could make for unkind laughs - Deborah's habit of seeking validation aboard tour buses packed with out of towners, Ava's uncomfortable run-ins with former writing colleagues - are instead used to illustrate the vulnerability each desperately tries to hide.</p><div type="image" title="hannah einbinder jean smart hbo max hacks" height="1280" width="1706" msid="83391195" hostid="261"></div><p>This show isn't interested in watching two women fight each other for comedic superiority. Instead, it delicately explores the unspoken challenges facing women in an industry dominated by men, one that's never seen them as equal and still doesn't, even now.</p><p>Deborah has blazed a path through an industry that didn't believe she deserved to have a career in the first place. Ava may have benefited from that, but it doesn't mean her journey hasn't been without its own - unfortunately similar - struggles. And neither woman is allowed the creative freedom or opportunities she would have if she were a man.</p><p>Perhaps this careful duet wouldn't work with lesser actresses, but luckily the show's<em> </em>two leads are phenomenal together, carefully balancing biting humor and subtle emotion to create a perfect cocktail of hilarious wit and deep emotional truths.</p><p>Smart, in particular, is a revelation, as commanding and at ease in this role as she's ever been in anything (and with her resume, that's saying a lot). Her Deborah is fantastically layered, hysterically funny, and surprisingly empathetic, and Smart steals virtually every scene she's in without overpowering her costars.</p><p>"Hacks" isn't just a story about the jokes we tell, but also what humor says about us - how it reflects both the society we come from and the one we're working to build. That this show so easily does both is why we should be even more excited to see where it goes next.</p>
