<ul class="summary-list"><li>As a <keyword id="12118312" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="montessori" source="Orion">Montessori</keyword> teacher and a mom, I have a lot of experience helping kids get dressed.</li><li>In my experience, children's <keyword id="11899423" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="clothes" source="Orion">clothes</keyword> are not designed with them in mind, which can cause anxiety.</li></ul><p>It wasn't until I started teaching young kids to use the bathroom in my <a href="https://www.insider.com/montessori-parents-you-should-be-following-on-instagram-and-tiktok-2021-10">Montessori classroom</a> that it dawned on me: Children's clothing, more often than not, isn't designed for childhood.</p><p>Skinny jeans that inhibit mobility. Dresses that are impossible to get over your head after an accident. Buttons - so many buttons - that little hands just can't maneuver. The distracting sequins that change color as you rub them. I was, and continued to be, confused by <a href="https://www.insider.com/vans-released-a-line-of-sneakers-for-kids-with-autism-2020-3">most children's clothing designs</a>.</p><p>This became even more obvious when I started facing sensory challenges when getting my own daughters dressed in the morning for preschool. Instead of an enthusiastic start to the day, it felt like an explosive negotiation between too-tight leggings, sweatpants with tiny pills, and "itchy" seams on everything.</p><p>The negotiations always ended in tears. These feelings of frustration and helplessness set the tone for the rest of the day and made the hard things feel even harder.</p><h2>It's not a lack of skills that gets in the way</h2><p>I wanted their days to start with them knowing they were capable and feeling confident in themselves.</p><p>I knew they had the coordination to get dressed; my oldest was working on needlepoint with me at home. It wasn't that they weren't capable of learning how to dress. It was that the design and quality of the clothing impeded their efforts.</p><p>I did everything I could think of to change the experience of dressing in the morning. I played silly games, bought oversized clothes, stretched out their clothes, had meetings with the pediatrician, made up songs, met with a child therapist, and bribed them with television.</p><h2>One dress changed the whole dynamic</h2><p>One day, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.hannaandersson.com%2F">Hanna Andersson</a> box arrived on my doorstep, a gift from my mother-in-law. She and I had been working together searching for clothes that would work.</p><p>I opened the package in front of the girls, and inside was a lemon-print swing dress. I held up the dress and examined it: smooth seams around the neckline, pockets for sensory input, and a loose, roomy fit. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-kids-pajamas">It was promising</a>.</p><p>I invited my older daughter to try it on. She laid the dress on the floor, then pulled it on over her head and pressed her hands down the side, feeling the fabric against her skin. I held my breath.</p><p>"I love it!" she chirped. "Can I wear it right now?" I clipped the tag off, and she skipped off to play.</p><p>I think of this dress as the "gateway dress" because it drastically changed our mornings and days. I know that might sound dramatic. I assure you, it's not.</p><p>Everything got easier. Suddenly, when I would tell the girls it was time to get dressed, they would enthusiastically oblige. Transitions became more manageable, and during our lessons they were more attentive and eager - all because of a dress.</p><p>There are a small handful of clothing companies that have <a href="https://smartknit.com/educational-resources">realized that children's clothes should be for childhood</a>. Finding them took some time, <a href="https://www.insider.com/fashion-brands-donating-coronavirus-response-2020-3">but I am so glad we did</a>. We no longer have long and complicated clothing negotiations.</p><p>Once we found that one dress, my daughter's attitude toward getting dressed changed, and so did her confidence in herself. We saw her transition from helpless to empowered, and she carried that confidence into her classroom. Learning became easier.</p><p>My girls no longer worry about how their clothes feel in class. They're too busy playing and learning. They get to be kids.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I buy almost all my kids' clothing secondhand. </li><li>Buying and selling takes time and energy, but saving a significant amount of money is worth it.</li></ul><p>Kids grow like weeds, and there's a short window of time for them to wear each clothing size.</p><p>I'm picky about what my girls wear, but I would not be able to afford the brands and styles that I wanted to dress them in if I <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/parents-are-returning-worn-out-childrens-clothing-to-target-2023-5">bought their clothes brand new</a>. I also don't feel great about buying brand-new when I know they'll wear each item for such a short amount of time.</p><p>Instead, I scour the internet and local consignment sales to find clothes secondhand and then resell them after they're done wearing them. It saves me money and is a more sustainable option as well.</p><p>Here are four tips for kids' consignment success.</p><h2 id="47f312ab-7d10-4952-9ead-28a8fec89365">I buy online and at consignment sales</h2><p>Kidizen is the kids' equivalent of the popular consignment site Poshmark. I use it for buying as it's easy to filter by brand, size, and item quality, and shipping is fairly inexpensive.</p><p>There are also great local consignment sales where I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, many of which happen twice a year (in early fall and early spring). They're great for buying many items at once and for building out my kids' closet for the upcoming season. These sales are typically only a few days long, and on the last day, items are usually reduced even further for mega deals.</p><p>Chances are there are similar sales or consignment <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/parenting/best-kids-clothes">stores specifically for kids</a> in your area. If you're not familiar with any, ask your local parenting group or do a quick Google search to find them.</p><p>Facebook is also a great place to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/clothing-resale-popular-with-retailers-gen-z-sustainable-shoppers-2022-2">buy kids' clothes</a>. To make it easier to find what you want, look for specific Buy/Sell/Trade (BST) groups for brands you love, like the popular Mini Boden &amp; Hanna Andersson BST group (which has over 60,000 members!). You can also search the Facebook Marketplace by category or brand.</p><div type="image" title="Elliott Harrell's kids' closet with clothes hanging up in it." height="3882" width="5175" msid="110842636" hostid="261"></div><h2 id="0b45065f-f81d-462d-b4d6-24875676e249">Here's how I sell secondhand clothing to make the most money</h2><p>As a seller, you'll make different profit margins based on where you sell your clothes.</p><p>Kidizen <a target="_blank" href="https://about.kidizen.com/fee/#:~:text=Listing%20an%20item%20on%20Kidizen,fee%20from%20the%20List%20Price.">takes 12%</a> (plus an additional flat $.50 fee) of each sale, so I typically start by listing things on Facebook Marketplace or specialty BST groups because there are no fees when you make a sale. You'll also have to ship your item if you use Kidizen, but you can choose whether you pay the shipping fee or pass the fee along to the buyer. If you're using Facebook, you have the option of local buyers only or whether you want to ship.</p><p>If an item isn't selling on Facebook after a couple of weeks, I'll list it on Kidizen to reach a wider audience. Then, my last resort is selling through the local seasonal consignment sales because they can take up to 50% of the profit for each sale. They're a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/classic-thrift-stores-worse-secondhand-clothing-market-popular-2024-3">great way to sell</a> a lot of things quickly, though, so I'll take whatever hasn't sold through other methods to these and then donate whatever is leftover at the end of the sale.</p><h2 id="ee1b3139-3748-45e1-9713-2943840fef31">Certain brands have a higher resale value</h2><p>The kid <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-turn-resale-side-hustle-into-full-time-business-2020-4">resale market</a> is similar to the adult resale market. Higher-end brands have a better chance at reselling, and you're going to get more of your purchase price back when you resell them. Keep this in mind when you're buying (new or secondhand), as the ability to resell effectively brings your purchase price down since you're making back some of what you spent.</p><p>Mass-market brands like Old Navy and Carters are tougher to resell, and you'll likely only be able to recoup a small percentage of what you originally paid. Higher-end brands like Hanna Andersson, Mini Boden, and The Beaufort Bonnet Company have high resale values and often pass through several rounds of ownership.</p><p>When I buy an item from one of these brands secondhand, I can usually resell it for 70-80% of what I paid. Over time, I've made and saved hundreds of dollars selling my girls' clothes. It feels good to contribute to the circular economy by giving gently used clothes a new life, but it does take a lot of work.</p><p>Creating a listing to sell an item takes work. You'll need to take multiple pictures and write a description, and you might need to list the item in multiple places to make a sale. Keeping yourself organized is also important. You need space in your house to keep mailers and packing supplies to ship things and space to store the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-ebay-seller-explains-how-to-start-an-online-store-2024-6">clothes you want to sell</a>.</p><p>If you aren't making many sales, you may need to reconsider what brands you're listing, how you're pricing, or the quality of your photos. Have patience, but know that your time also has a cost, and over time, if you aren't selling, it may not be worth it.</p><p>On the buying side, you may not find things you love every time you try to shop. There is no way to tell what inventory might be available in the size and condition that you are looking for. Browse Kidizen and your favorite BST Facebook groups for a few minutes whenever you have time. If you find something you love, act quickly, as once the item is gone, there is no backup.</p><p>Kids' clothing is expensive, and they don't wear anything for long. It takes time and effort, but buying secondhand and reselling is a way to drastically reduce your spending.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>When I was 6, my mother signed me up for modeling lessons because she thought I would enjoy them. </li><li>During one photo shoot, I wouldn't hug Santa because I was shy and afraid of beards.</li></ul><p>"Can you get a little closer and put your arms around him?" The photographer motioned to me to shift closer to the strange man next to me who was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/professional-santas-training-at-special-school-for-holiday-season-2021">dressed as Santa Claus</a> in front of a newly lit faux Christmas tree.</p><p>I moved about half an inch closer, with plenty of space still between my body and Santa's. I was about 8 years old and doing a Christmas-themed photo shoot.</p><p>Maybe I was shy or just not in the holiday spirit yet, but for whatever reason, the shoot wasn't going well.</p><h2>Child modeling helped me escape</h2><p>When I was 6, my mother signed me up for modeling. A fashion model from ages 18 to 28, she thought it would be fun for me.</p><p>Her photographer friend took my headshots, we submitted them to an agency, and my career as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/my-baby-is-a-model-in-advertising-campaigns-2022-3">a child model</a> began. Models try on clothes and get headshots taken.</p><p>My first gig was at an ice-skating rink for the children's clothing company Hanna Andersson with the French fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier. I don't remember much, but I do remember having a lot of fun skating around and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/lais-ribeiro-mom-to-special-needs-child-first-over-supermodeling-2023-9">grinning at the camera</a>.</p><p>I also did a QVC shoot for Mother's Day where I held up a pillow with diamond earrings on it as I stood next to a boy who was supposed to be my little brother.</p><p>Once, I dressed as the Wicked Witch of the West, with my face and hands covered in green paint, for a catalog that sold children's Halloween costumes.</p><p>I loved the attention and getting dressed up. I felt special at a time when I was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/what-to-do-if-your-child-bullying-online-at-school-2022-11">being bullied in school</a> and had few friends. When I was modeling, no one knew how weird I was and everyone liked me. I remember auditioning to be the voice inside a stuffed animal. I had to sing "Happy Birthday" into a microphone, but I could barely get the words out. I just wasn't confident enough to flourish.</p><p>Another time, I was at a go-see and sent off to change into an example of the clothes I would be modeling. They were way too big for me, with the pant legs trailing on the floor. A confident, exuberant kid might have made herself look better by rolling up the pants or making a joke about it. I crept back into the room and didn't say anything until my mother rolled up the pants for me.</p><p>With the Santa shoot, where I wouldn't get near the man in the costume, I think the thing that scared me the most was the beard. I don't quite remember why I was so afraid, but it turns out, I'm not alone in this sentiment. "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/2019/07/30/746616246/kids-see-bearded-men-as-strong-but-unattractive-study-finds">A 2019 study</a> found that kids rejected bearded men who were unfamiliar to them.</p><p>The photos were for a holiday catalog. Thinking back on the final photo, I remember I didn't exactly look happy but I wasn't petrified. I never pursued it seriously after about age 9 or 10, but I wonder whether my mother wished I had followed in her footsteps.</p><p>Sometimes, I wish I would have been a little bolder. Maybe then I would have been a singing voice in a toy or appeared in a TV ad. Either way, I don't think I would have made it to the level of my mother's success — she was featured in magazines and regularly walked down fashion runways. But I really enjoyed my short stint in stardom and wouldn't change a thing.</p>

Because of that, <a href="https://www.insider.com/unique-us-christmas-traditions-2017-12">family traditions are very different</a>. I was used to wearing white on New Year's Eve to scare away bad energy and attract positive vibes. My youngest cousin and I sometimes wore red and white for our Christmas dinner, but it was more of a sexy Santa look than a cute family-matching situation, if I'm going to be honest.</p><p>I'll admit that I judged families and their matching pajamas. Then I became a mom, and while I refused the matching looks during our first holiday as a family of three, I started to see the appeal. By the time our twins were born, upgrading us to a family of five, we were ready to go all out. <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/gifts/christmas-pajama-sets">Now it's my favorite tradition during the holidays</a>.</p><h2>It's low effort</h2><p>My husband is the one making the magic happen in this house. He is an incredible wrapper, while I still don't know how to make neat corners around a box. He cooks every meal, planning and making sure there are several courses throughout the day. He decorates the tree while I hand him ornaments that I don't really remember getting.</p><p>Getting matching pajamas is what I contribute to our celebrations. It's easy enough that I don't get overwhelmed executing it. I buy them online months in advance in the appropriate sizes, keep them in sight in everyone's closet, then make everyone wear them for only 24 hours once a year. Done.</p><p>There's the added benefit that I usually get the pajamas from the same brand my kids are used to wearing year-round, so there's no convincing or forcing them to wear their pajamas — they are as thrilled as I am.</p><p>It can get expensive, especially if you have a big family. My ultimate tip to keep the cost down is to buy a set for the next year on December 26, when stores have major sales on their holiday pajamas.</p><h2>It won't last forever</h2><p>I'm fully aware that there will be a time when my kids tell me they've had it with our coordinated outfits, and I'll respect their call when they make it. I won't make it a forced thing that we have to do even if they don't want to. I had to endure plenty of those forced traditions growing up, and I swore never to do it with my own children.</p><p>Who knows, maybe they'll never say no and it'll become a thing way into their adult years. The idea of grandchildren and extended family wearing the same outfit makes my cheesy heart absolutely melt with love.</p><p>And while it might seem wasteful to get the whole family pajamas for just one night, we all wear them on random dates once the holidays have passed, especially if I'm behind on the laundry. While some extra-concerned parents shop for flame-resistant pajamas, most are comfortable with pairs that fit their kids well enough to not create a large pocket of air between the fabric and a child's skin, thereby minimizing danger during the unfortunate (and unlikely) event of an evacuation during a fire.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Finally, once you have function, sizing, and style picked out, it's time for you to select the print. The issue there will be an overabundance of choices, not a dearth.
