To tell the story of two astronomers (Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence) trying to warn the world that a comet is headed to destroy Earth, Corwin takes the audience on a jarring ride of jump cuts and even scenes ending while a character is in mid-sentence to examine the absurdity of how the world reacts to the news."Without exaggeration, Hank is one of the greatest editors of all time," McKay <a href="https://www.insider.com/dont-look-up-director-adam-mckay-memorable-moments-2022-1">told Insider</a> in an interview earlier this month. "What he's been able to do, and it's what we've been trying to do with all these <keyword id="11898343" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="movies" source="Orion">movies</keyword>, is capture the feeling of what it's like to be alive now with the amount of information we're hit with.""This guy has a style like no one else and I love it," McKay continued. "He's ahead of his time. He gets the rhythm of how we really live. So I just set him loose." And that was most prevalent in the movie's conclusion, as Corwin crafts a sequence that sporadically shows us glimpses of the final moments of life on Earth before the comet destroys it.<div type="image" title="Hank Corwin and his wife's wedding day" height="613" width="1227" msid="89206061" hostid="261"></div><h2>How footage of Corwin's wedding ended up in the movie</h2>While DiCaprio and Lawrence's characters sit for a last supper with his family, Corwin uses cell phone videos, stock footage of animals, even his own wedding video to paint a picture of all the scenarios of how our last minutes on Earth could be."What I try to do is I try to find stuff that looks really authentic," Corwin told Insider of his unique editing style. "I find a shot that's a little shaky and really emotional on somebody's cell phone to be as emotional or more emotional than something that's very third person.""For the purpose of this film I really wanted to bring it home," he added. "I wanted to show the small moments that people could relate to."Corwin said how to pull off the end of world sequence in "Don't Look Up" was a conversation he had with McKay going all the way back to when they were editing "Vice."And then when McKay shot "Don't Look Up" in Boston in 2020, Corwin was in his edit suite above his garage in Los Angeles formulating on his own how he wanted the sequence to play.<div type="image" title="Baby in bath water" height="596" width="1193" msid="89206065" hostid="261"></div>He found stock footage of shots like a child playing in the bath, and two whales having sex, cell phone footage of a bear in a convenience store, and then he went and put in footage from his own wedding."That's an authentic moment," Corwin said of the wedding footage, which took place in Las Vegas. You can also see an Elvis Presley impersonator behind them. "Nobody would ever put something that poorly shot, that fucked up, and I was like this has to start with me if I want to make this thing truthful."Corwin said then McKay went and elevated the wedding footage by changing the sequence so it shows a couple holding hands looking at their weeding video when the comet hits."I thought that was so brilliant on his part," Corwin said of the tweak.<h2>McKay took out a shot of a rabbi at the Wailing Wall, said Corwin</h2>Corwin said in the months of shooting and post production the end of world sequence went through many phases. He and his assistant were constantly looking for footage that would top what they had, even McKay would look through his phone in the edit room for interesting footage, Corwin said.But not everything Corwin put in the sequence McKay liked.The editor said that McKay had him trim down a shot that features a woman who has died by suicide, leaving only a shot of an arm hanging over a bed.<div type="image" title="arm over a bed" height="589" width="1179" msid="89206067" hostid="261"></div>And the one shot in the sequence Corwin recalls vividly McKay wanting out was a shot of a rabbi."I had a rabbi praying at the Wailing Wall," Corwin said, referring to the religious site in Jerusalem. "The rabbi was crying, it was very powerful. But Adam thought it was just too gut-wrenching."Corwin said that's part of the job as an editor, that the director is the one who makes the final call."Adam is really tough," Corwin said. "But the one thing I know is I'll have my day in court, he'll look at anything I do. But meanwhile, there's stories about my tweet and it's really strange. So we wrote it that way cause it's true. But let me be clear, though I didn't think it was very funny at first that we're going to talk about one detail from my breakup with Ferrell for a month straight, I get it. Was there a point where you had to put your foot down? It's actually not that tricky. You can always tell when it's productive and when it's not. With Leo, it was always productive. He was respectful. He's really smart. He understands tone and character and narrative at a high level. In those five months, we probably only met four times for a couple of hours each time. I have had the opposite happen. I have had it where an actor starts tearing at it and has questions and you can feel it going in the wrong direction. But that's easy, too. You just say, "I think we're seeing different things." But in this case, it didn't happen.Maybe a few lines Leo would question, but he was always respectful about it and I would just say, "Let's get it on camera and if it sucks I'm not going to use it." He even came into the edit room and looked at cuts of the film and really gave us some incredibly valuable notes. Do you recall something in the movie where Leo gave some great notes in the edit?I'll give him a giant hunk of credit: Believe it or not, that line at the end of the movie where he says, "We really did have it all," that wasn't in the script. I have to ask him where he got that from. That weird pain on his side. Oh, so he just started doing that during filming?Yeah, he never said anything to me. He just started doing it and I just loved it. I said to him the role would be a pop star like Ariana Grande, and right away he was like, "Why don't we try Ariana Grande?" My daughter worships her. I always knew she had an incredible voice but the more I learned about her I learned she's got some acting under her belt. Was the "you old fuck" line she says to Leo in the script?Yeah, but it's funny where that came from. I originally had a different line there. It was "mind your own business, you boomer fuck." And my daughter, Pearl, and her friend, Ava, were both like, "No one says boomer anymore." They were like, "You can't have her say that." So I was like, "Well, what would she say to him?" And they were both like, "She would just call him an old fuck." [Laughs] So because of their note, I changed the line. Pure accident. Hold on, Adam. Hold on. You're telling me the number you put in your movie is a random phone number and you had no idea where it went to?Hand to Bible, Jason. So he also knows how to entertain the heck out of the audience.&#xa0;McKay's first trick is the unbelievable casting of Christian Bale as Cheney. After gaining some weight, and the makeup team going to work on him, Bale looks so much like Cheney it's frightening (he gives one of the best performances of the year). Then McKay surrounds Bale with a fantastic supporting cast, including Amy Adams as Cheney's wife, Lynne, Steve Carell as Cheney's mentor, Donald Rumsfeld, and Sam Rockwell as a spot-on George W. Bush. And lastly it's not so much McKay's writing that's the clincher but the work of his editor Hank Corwin.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>The veteran cutter has done everything from Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers" and "Nixon," to Terrence Malick's "The New World" and "The Tree of Life," and his style is prevalent here (Corwin also edited "The Big Short"). "Vice" feels like a Stone movie at times, as scenes can jolt from a flashback, to a different scene, then back to the scene we were just in at any moment.It's a challenge for the audience to keep up, but that's part of the point. The entire movie messes with the audience as much as it wickedly satirizes the real-life characters it's portraying. McKay isn't leading you into the dark mind of Cheney; he is sprinting through it and hoping you can keep up.As the movie shows, Cheney's early life wasn't much of an indication of the man he would become. Portrayed as a drunk with no ambition, it's Lynne who turns him around. This leads him to Washington D.C. and to the crude tutelage of Rumsfeld, who is part of the Nixon administration. In that space, Cheney sees his calling as the power behind the throne. Decades later, and rebounding after a couple of heart attacks (Cheney's weak heart is a great comedic element used throughout the movie), Cheney finally gets his big shot when George W. Bush asks him to be his running mate. The Bush/Cheney ticket is capped by a perfectly edited sequence of Cheney luring Bush into his conditions for taking the job (basically having more power than any VP before him) by intercutting scenes of Cheney patiently fly fishing, enticing the fish (Bush) with his shiny bait.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>McKay shows the ruthless side of Cheney once the tragic events of September 11, 2001 happen. Taking over the War Room on that faithful day instead of Bush, the movie depicts Cheney as someone who has finally found a way to be above even the government. But that's really the only time McKay is willing to give Cheney a break. This is a movie that is unapologetic about how it portrays its lead, who Bale plays with a monotone feel that's darkly comedic.There are moments you are going to get frustrated, maybe even hate "Vice" for how it will mess with your patience (there's even a moment in the middle of the movie when McKay playfully acts like the movie is over, with end credits appearing). But that's what I found so enjoyable about watching it.In an era when most movies are test-screened to death and greenlit mainly because the premise has been done so many times that it's proven to make money, McKay gives us a movie (Annapurna Pictures financed and released it) that seems to defy all of that by letting the passion for unique storytelling rule.So buy the ticket and take the ride. Dick Cheney biopic 'Vice' is a wicked satire that messes with the audience and features an outstanding Christian Bale performance

His latest movie, "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1596363/?ref_=nm_flmg_wr_1">The Big Short</a>," is building impressive notice from critics in its early screenings (the film opens in limited release December 11 and wide on December 23).Based on the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Big-Short-Doomsday-Machine/dp/0393338827">best-selling nonfiction book</a> by Michael Lewis that looks inside the housing-bubble collapse, the unconventional, documentary-like movie grabbed the attention of A-list talent including Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, and Brad Pitt, who play the few people in the finance world who saw the crash coming.But one of the film's biggest coups was featuring Led Zeppelin's classic track <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbrjRKB586s" target="_blank">"When the Levee Breaks"</a> in the debut trailer and in the movie's end credits.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Zeppelin has been known for decades as one of the hardest bands to get to approve its music for use in&#xa0;movies ("Almost Famous," "School of Rock," and "The Fighter" are some notable projects that pulled it off). McKay confirmed to Business Insider that it was a challenge signing the group on to "The Big Short."In fact, the filmmakers almost had to postpone the premiere of the trailer because, up to the 11th hour, they didn't know if they could legally include the song."We cut the trailer and put in the Zeppelin song, and it's not only one of the greatest songs of all time, but it drives you through the trailer," McKay said. "But then we were told we might not be able to get the rights."McKay explained that the producers and music supervisor on the film had covered the globe trying to get approvals. Reaching out to everyone from the publishing company that owns Zeppelin's music, to surviving band members Robert Plant and John Paul Jones. Even getting the blessing of the family of the band's deceased drummer, John Bonham. Everyone said yes, but no one could find lead guitarist Jimmy Page."I'm like, 'What do you mean you can't find Jimmy Page?' And I was told he has a new girlfriend and I guess they were off having a good time," McKay said.<div></div>Fast-forward to the night before the trailer premiere, and they still couldn't find Page. McKay said by that point he and his team were trying to figure out another song to replace "When the Levee Breaks." They even considered postponing the launch of the trailer, but were scared rumors would start around Hollywood that the film was in trouble. While in England, a team of people was on the search for Page."We finally heard that he was in some pub out in the English countryside," McKay said. "So an assistant drove two hours to get to the pub, breaking every speed limit, goes into the pub and puts a computer in front of Jimmy Page so he can look at the trailer and say either yes we can use the song or no. Then at like 1:55 a.m. or something I got the email that he said yes."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>But the story doesn't end there. McKay also wanted to use the song in the film's end credits, and when Page was told that, he had one condition."He said we can't edit the song," McKay said. "He told us he didn't like how they cut up his songs in movies."So McKay was now stuck trying to figure out how to make the uncut song - which has a 1:24 instrumental before Plant begins to sing - work in the credits.What McKay and his editor, <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0181650/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1">Hank Corwin</a>, came up with was to begin the song very faintly among sounds of New York City traffic during the text cards at the end of the movie, which inform the audience what has happened to the characters. Then when the credits follow, Plant begins to sing."That was the crazy thing," McKay said. "That was a pure accident.
