<p class="source"><span>Screenshot</span></p>It's already being called <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/juicegate">"Juicegate"</a>. <p>On Wednesday, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2017-04-19/silicon-valley-s-400-juicer-may-be-feeling-the-squeeze">Bloomberg broke the news</a> that the high-end juicer backed by Silicon Valley's elite venture capitalists wasn't even needed to squeeze out the juice. </p><p>When it was launched a year ago, the $700 machine touted the tons of force it generated to squeeze out every last drop of juice from the fresh fruits and vegetables. </p><p>Bloomberg found that hand-squeezing the packets yielded nearly the same result. </p><p>Now, Juicero is on the defensive and is arguing that it's juicer (whose price was previously cut to $400) is needed because "t<span>he value of Juicero is more than a glass of cold-pressed juice. Much more," <a href="https://medium.com/@Juicero/a-note-from-juiceros-new-ceo-cb23a1462b03">says its CEO Jeff Dunn</a>.</span></p><p>To Juicero, the value of the company is its connected juice press that can tell you when the juice is about to expire and saves you the two minutes of packet squeezing. Anyone who thinks otherwise can now return their press for a full refund, Dunn says.</p><p>When Business Insider's Alyson Shontell tried the Juicero machine (pre-Juicegate) in April 2016, she found herself saying "Oh my God," as she put down her first glass of <a href="http://www.juicero.com">Juicero</a>-pressed juice. </p><p>Whether a $400 juicer is worth saving two minutes of hand-squeezing is a question you'll have to decide, but here's what it was like to use the Juicero machine when Business Insider first visited last April.</p>

<p class="source"><span>Juicero</span></p>Juicero, the maker of a high-tech juicing machine, is offering full refunds to customers who are upset to learn that its juice packs can be squeezed by hand.<p>In a <a href="https://medium.com/@Juicero/a-note-from-juiceros-new-ceo-cb23a1462b03">lengthy blog post on Medium </a>on Thursday to <span>address the hand-squeezing controversy, Juicero CEO Jeff Dunn promised to take back machines from any customer who "<span>feels that we aren't making it easier, more enjoyable and delicious to form a healthy habit."</span></span></p><p><span><span><span>"If you send us your Press, we'll refund the money you paid for it. Juicero says you can mail your $700 juicers back for a refund if you were outraged to learn you can squeeze its juice packs by hand

<p class="source"><span>Juicero</span></p>Juicero employees found out in a letter on Friday that the company is cutting the price of its cold-press juicing system. Some employees also found out they had been cut, too. <p>In a letter obtained by <a href="http://fortune.com/2017/07/14/juicero-layoffs-lower-prices/">Fortune</a>, Juicero CEO Jeff Dunn wrote, <span>"the current prices of $399 for the Press and $5 - $7 for produce Packs are not a realistic way for us to fulfill our mission at the scale to which we aspire."</span> </p><p>The San Francisco startup's mission is to help people consume more fresh produce everyday, and to get there they will focus on the next generation of the machine, which will run less than $300, according to Fortune. </p><p><span>Dunn also said that 25% of employees, mostly on the marketing side, would lose their jobs in a shift in focus to product development. </span></p><p>The Juicero machine, for those unfamiliar, can whip up a fresh-squeezed fruit and veggie concoction at the press of a button. It's also WiFi-enabled, and can tell you the nutritional value of your drink. It originally cost $700 when it first launched, plus it received endorsements from Gwyneth Paltrow and Dr.Oz and was hailed as the ultimate Silicon Valley indulgence. </p><p>Founder Doug Evans envisioned doing for juice what Steve Jobs did for Apple. In a <a href="https://www.juicero.com/blog/juicero/the-journey-to-juicero/">blog post</a> he wrote the machine took over three years and 12 prototypes to create, and that the final product exceeded his "grandest dreams." </p><p class="source"><span>Juicero</span></p>The company has faced blowback from consumers after an April <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2017-04-19/silicon-valley-s-400-juicer-may-be-feeling-the-squeeze">Bloomberg </a>article revealed the packets could be easily squeezed by hand. According to the article, investors were a little peeved to learn that the machine was not actually necessary for the same "farm to glass" juice experience. Those investors - which include Campbell Soup, Google Ventures, and Kleiner Perkins - helped Juicero raise $100 million in 2015 after three years in stealth mode. <p>Evans <a href="https://medium.com/@Juicero/a-note-from-juiceros-new-ceo-cb23a1462b03">responded</a> to the Bloomberg story, saying the company already knew the packs could be squeezed into juice and that the value lies in the machine's smart features and consistent pressing technique - not just the juice itself. </p><p>Juicero packets expire quickly - 8 days, according to the company - and the machine's connected features help them maintain their tight supply chain. The product even has an app that reminds you to drink your juice before it expires. </p><p>Evans offered a full refund to unsatisfied customers, but said less than 5% of customers had taken him up on it. </p><p>Customers will have to decide for themselves if the reduced price is worth it for a glass of juice. Juicero, maker of the $400 juicer, just announced a price cut and employee layoffs

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Juicero - the Silicon Valley company known for its $400, Wifi-enabled juicer - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/juicero-is-shutting-down-operations-2017-9">shut down</a><span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/juicero-is-shutting-down-operations-2017-9">&#xa0;and suspended sales</a> of its presses and produce packs </span>Saturday.</p><p>Meanwhile, its founder and raw food evangelist Doug Evans is in the Nevada desert for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/burning-man-2017">Burning Man</a>, the annual festival known for its wild art, costumes, and parties.</p><p>Evans has posted several Instagrams at the festival in the past few days. In the one below, he blows fire from a tricked-out bicycle:</p><p><span>Juicero shuttered after nearly four years of operation. The company initially priced its juicer at $699 in 2016, but then reduced it to $399 earlier this year. That was after <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2017/4/19/15357340/juicero-juicer-not-actually-necessary-for-juicing">Bloomberg reported</a> that Juicero's fruit and veggie packs didn't actually need a Juicero machine. Users could just squeeze the juice out by hand.</span></p><p><span>For that reason, the company - which had become a poster child for Silicon Valley's lavishly funded gadget startup culture - <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/01/technology/juicero-start-up-shuts-down.html?mcubz=3&amp;_r=0">was routinely criticized</a> for attempting to solve a problem that didn't exist. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://twitter.com/iamdougevans">Twitter/iamdougevans</a></span></p><p class="caption">Doug Evans, CEO and founder of Juicero</p></div><p></p></div></div>Juicero is a startup with a simple goal: it wants to to make the freshest juice you've ever tasted. </p><p>And after roughly three years in stealth mode - and raising <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/juicero-raises-120-million-2015-1">a war chest of capital that's pushing $100 million</a> - the startup <a href="https://twitter.com/iamdougevans/status/715539553025536004">finally launched on Thursday morning</a>.</p><p>Juicero can most simply be described as a "Keurig for juice." The product is a smart, Wi-Fi connected kitchen appliance that presses pouches the size of IV bags into tasty concoctions of fresh fruits, water, and veggies. There's also no preparation, mess, or cleanup. You simply slip in the pouch, press a button, and out pours your juice. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image"><a title_source="Juicero.com" title_caption="How Juicero works. It can also order another pouch for the user once one has been pressed and used. And because Juicero's pouches are going from a farm straight to your house, with no grocery store in between, it's apparently fresher than most other juices you've tried.</p><p>The Juicero appliance will be pricey, about $699, a Juicero investor tells Business Insider, although final costs are still being determined. But the product, this person says, is "magical."</p><p>It's so magical, in fact, that celebrities like Dr. Oz and Gwyneth Paltrow have tried the juice and are said to have been blown away. Apple design genius Jony Ive and Yves Béhar had a hand in Juicero's design, as did Nest founders Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers. Juicero is the brainchild of Doug Evans, <span>a vegan who was formerly CEO and chairman of health-food chain Organic Avenue.</span></p><p>Juicero's major investors include Campbell Soup, Google, Artis Ventures, and Kleiner Perkins, with additional funding from <span>Double Bottom Line Ventures, Thrive Capital, and Vast Ventures among others.</span></p><p><span>Campbell apparently agreed to invest after tasting a V8-like juice that Juicero's team whipped up. Shortly after, Campbells committed to a large investment in the startup.</span></p><p><span>The problem - other than the high price point - is that juicers produce a lot of sugar. And at the moment, the world is not too hot on sugar. </span></p><p><span><span>In November, the </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fda-proposes-new-sugar-limits-2015-11">Food and Drug Administration stated</a> <span>that Americans shouldn't eat or drink more than 50 grams of sugar, which has brought a lot of negative attention to companies like Coke and Pepsi. </span>Some have even <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/big-soda-is-fighting-science-on-sugar-2015-11">likened sugar to tobacco.</a></span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Juicero.com</span></p><p class="caption">The Juicero machine.</p></div><p></p></div></div>But <span>Stuart Peterson, a partner at Artis Ventures and a self-proclaimed sugar addict, notes that Juicero doesn't take out all the healthy fiber like normal juicers do, and he says he craves less and less sugar since he started using Juicero.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Plus, it just tastes great, he says.</span></span></p><p><span>"This product, when you drink it, it's alive," Peterson tells Business Insider. "When you have Keurig coffee, I guess it's a good cup but it doesn't blow your mind. This blows your mind because [the fruits and vegetables are] in a natural state. A startup quietly raised a boatload of cash to make a $700 'Keurig for juice' with help from Silicon Valley geniuses like Jony Ive

<p>Today Slate's Katy Waldman wrote a great post <a href="http://www.slate.com/articles/double_x/doublex/2013/11/juice_cleanses_not_healthy_not_virtuous_just_expensive.html">taking down the juice cleanse</a>. She said drinking nothing but raw fruit and vegetable juice for several days on end, while touted as healthy, will leave you starving and unhappy. Not to mention everyone who does it acts elitist.<br /><br />But it's important to clarify that it's not drinking juice that leaves you miserable -- it's drinking only juice. (Here, we're talking about the vegetable juice that's pressed in a juicer and either served straight from it or bottled and sold in stores, not your typical orange or cranberry juice.) <br /><br />When most Americans are struggling with their diets already, a story about why juice is bad might scare them away from it entirely. This would be bad, because juicing, in moderation, has an incredibly obvious, important benefit.<br /><br />It helps you eat more vegetables. <br /><br />As simple as it sounds, eating vegetables is a big struggle for many people. They're rich sources of essential vitamins and minerals, and fill you up faster on fewer calories.  The Harvard School of Public Health says the daily recommended number of servings varies<a href="http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/vegetables-full-story/"> from five to thirteen daily. That comes in at 2 1/2 cups to 6/12 cups per day</a>, depending on an individual's caloric intake. (The figure also includes servings of fruit.)<br /><br />Most people, however, can't even fit in a few servings. <p>Add a few handfuls of kale to your pasta. <a href="http://blogs.menshealth.com/bellyoff-nutritionist/9-ingredients-to-supercharge-your-smoothies/2012/08/27/">Mix Spinach into your morning smoothie</a>. Eat carrots instead of crackers. <a href="http://www.health.com/health/calendar/0,,20647197,00.html">Adopt an elaborate 30-day plan to fit more into your diet</a>. The tips and tricks to get more are everywhere. We're resorting to mind games.</p>
<p>With juicing, however, there's no need to think about it that hard. Drinking one glass of juice can bring you close to your daily recommended intake of vegetables in about five minutes. <p>Drinking that is basically eating a salad. There's no fiber in juice, but you still get all the vitamins and minerals from the plants. And for people trying to adopt a better diet, no one should be discouraged from consuming something that's so nutrient dense.</p>
<p>Juice cleansing is unnecessary, like Slate pointed out. The insane cost, unhealthy mindset, and annoying metamorphosis into a status symbol are definite problems. Their popularity shows that we tend to jump on board whenever promised with a quick fix.</p>
<p>So here's a quick fix. Drink a juice every once in a while. In terms of total servings of vegetables consumed daily -- alongside your regular food intake, of course -- there's no easier, faster, or better way to up your numbers. And being efficient is nice; it's why we order lunch from Seamless or pay bills online.</p>
