Tel Aviv [Israel], May 29 (ANI/TPS): A fire at a displaced persons camp in Rafah following an airstrike was likely caused by <keyword id="21850539" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hamas-munitions" source="keywords">Hamas munitions</keyword>, according to a preliminary military investigation, the <keyword id="19976425" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Israel-Defense-Forces" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Israel Defense Forces" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Israel Defense Forces">Israel Defense Forces</keyword> said on Tuesday. The Sunday night airstrike killed <keyword id="20047723" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hamas-commanders" source="keywords">Hamas commanders</keyword> Yassin Rabia and Khaled Nagar in a compound in the Rafah neighborhood of Tel Sultan. The pair were responsible for coordinating and funding terror attacks in Judea and Samaria. According to the <keyword id="61370" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IDF" source="Orion">IDF</keyword>, the area of the compound had been used for Hamas activities. Just 47 meters away from the site of the strike was a rocket launcher and launching pit. The compound was one kilometer away from the humanitarian zone and the IDF said it used two small munitions to prevent collateral damage in the nearby camp. The IDF stressed that the 17-kilogram warheads used were not powerful enough on their own to trigger the fire. The military believes the fire was likely caused by secondary explosions from Hamas munitions or some other material it was not aware of. "We have a suspicion, following intelligence surveillance and analysis of the videos from the event that were distributed on social networks, that secondary explosions at the site were caused by Hamas ammunition storage. This suspicion is under investigation," the IDF said. The IDF also released a recording of two Rafah residents specifically saying the fire was caused by Hamas explosives. "They say that they [the Hamas commanders killed] sat in a meeting, and that there is [a facility] and in addition, there was ammunition that began to explode. Bags of money scattered in the air," one Palestinian said. Asked if the exploding ammunition "is really ours," the first Palestinian replied, "Yes, it is an ammunition depot. The bombardment by the Jews was not strong. It was a small missile, because it did not create a large hole. But one thing is clear — he was supposed to be safe.Haniyeh was visiting an ally, Iran. He was in the capital for the swearing-in of its new president, a high-profile public occasion.In the hours before he died he had audiences with the president and Iran's supreme leader.That proximity to power did not keep him alive — to the outrage of his Iranian hosts.<div type="image" title="Ismail Haniyeh (left) meeting with Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran, Iran" height="3336" width="4416" msid="112174920" hostid="261" sizebytes="488796"></div><h2 id="c552214f-4fb9-41af-91f0-440f0bf9129a">'Humiliating' blow</h2><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ismail-haniyeh-top-hamas-leader-killed-in-iran-2024-7">Tasnim News</a>, an outlet with links to the authorities in Iran, said a guided projectile struck his dwelling in northern Tehran at around 2 a.m.Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Hamas and Iran blamed Israel. Israel didn't comment, but has carried out similar attacks before.According to Middle East and military experts, Haniyeh's death is a "humiliating" blow to Iran.Andrew Fox, a research <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://henryjacksonsociety.org/2024/07/10/major-ret-andrew-fox-joins-the-henry-jackson-society-as-new-research-fellow/">fellow</a> at the Henry Jackson Society, said the killing "sends a very clear message to Iran about Israel's ability to strike inside their borders."Fox said Haniyeh was of limited tactical significance as a target and could be easily replaced — but his loss still took a symbolic toll.<h2 id="a15ab7a0-d415-4e16-8c96-501278983e57">A history of attacks</h2>It wouldn't be the first time Israel has conducted military operations deep inside Iran.Israeli operatives gunned down Abdullah Ahmed Abdullah, a high-ranking Egyptian member of Al-Qaeda, on the streets of Tehran in August 2020, four officials <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/13/world/middleeast/al-masri-abdullah-qaeda-dead.html#:~:text=Abdullah%20Ahmed%20Abdullah%2C%20who%20went,Laden's%20son%20Hamza%20bin%20Laden.">told The New York Times</a> at the time.In November 2020, a Mossad team killed Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, an Iranian nuclear physicist said to be the leader of Iran's nuclear program.Ameneh Mehvar, a Middle East Regional Specialist with the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), said the latest attack reflected poorly on Iran.She called the killing "humiliating" and "damaging" to its image in the region.It "shows how deep Israel has likely infiltrated Iranian intelligence circles," she said.Farzan Sabet, a senior research associate at the Global Governance Centre and the Sanctions and Sustainable Peace Hub at the Geneva Graduate Institute, went further.He told BI that an "embarrassing security failure" like this would damage Iran's credibility among its allies and perhaps push it into a counterattack to save face."Tehran will likely feel pressure to retaliate in some form despite wanting to remain untouched by the Israel-Hamas war," he said.<h2 id="76feb6af-8a0f-44d5-92b7-d3f8d8a1cd6d">A new phase of brinkmanship</h2>Tensions between Israel and Iran were high even before Haniyeh's killing.Iran and Israel have for decades fought a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iran-israel-dragged-shadow-war-from-darkness-now-more-dangerous-2024-4">shadow war</a> of espionage and assassination.<div type="image" title="Palestinians carried a placard bearing the image of the leader of the militant Hamas group during a protest in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron" height="1333" width="2000" msid="112174914" hostid="261" sizebytes="251552"></div>Since Hamas launched terror attacks on Israel on October 7, groups allied with Iran — the Houthis, Hamas, and Hezbollah — have targeted Israel, with attacks sometimes spilling over into neighboring countries and directly involving Iran.An exchange of attacks in April on an Iranian embassy in Syria and then a return attack on Israeli soil <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-iran-strike-isfahan-sends-strong-message-nuclear-experts-say-2024-4">marked an earlier escalation</a> that stopped short of further conflict.According to Burcu Ozcelik, a senior research fellow for Middle East Security at the Royal United Services Institute, the attack on Haniyeh represents a "new phase of brinkmanship" in the region."While it is not the first targeted assassination against a high-level figure within the so-called 'Axis of Resistance' at this juncture of intense tit-for-tat and a high-stakes geopolitical conflict, it will have ripple effects across the region," she told BI.Haniyeh's assassination and the recent killing of Hezbollah commander <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-tried-killing-top-hezbollah-commander-beirut-with-us-bounty-2024-7">Fuad Shukr</a> in Beirut will "galvanize" other Iran-backed armed proxy groups in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, he said.This, he said, "creates a dangerous conflagration of threats to Israel and Western interests in the region, notably in the Red Sea, where the Houthis will likely escalate their attacks."Mehvar from ACLED, meanwhile, predicted an Iranian counterattack that was "harsher" but "proportionate," likely carried out with allies.Fox, of the Henry Jackson Society, foresaw "some kind of minor" escalation in rocket attacks from Iranian proxies in Yemen, Iraq, and Lebanon, followed by a return to the earlier precarious status quo."They will not want to escalate to the point where the West steps in, as they did during the rocket attacks in April, which were also an embarrassing failure," he said.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon said US adversaries want to dismantle the world order.</li><li>The bank chief said the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Gaza conflicts could escalate into World War III.</li></ul>Jamie Dimon says <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americas-rivals-pressure-same-time-russia-china-iran-north-korea-2024-9">US adversaries</a> want to topple the world order, and the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Hamas conflicts could explode into a new world war.China and Russia are "clearly talking about dismantling the system" established by Western nations after World War II, and "the risk of this is extraordinary," the JPMorgan CEO said at the Institute for International Finance's annual meeting in Washington, DC on Thursday. Business Insider obtained a recording of his comments.Dimon emphasized the risk that global warfare could break out, citing his historical knowledge and a recent Washington Post article that said, "World War III has already begun.""You already have battles on the ground being coordinated in multiple countries," the billionaire banker said. The fighting could diminish and peace deals might be struck, but "mistakes happen," he said."So, to me, we shouldn't be naive," Dimon said. "We can't take the chance this will resolve itself. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Graphic images of war and violence arebeingcirculated more than ever through <keyword id="19897919" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="social-media" source="keywords">social media</keyword>.</li><li>A researcher said people who identify with victims or are anxious about a violent event seek out more graphic content.</li></ul>It's hard to scroll social media right now without coming across pictures or videos of graphic violence, whether related to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-declares-state-of-war-hamas-launches-massive-surprise-attack-2023-10">Israel-Hamas war</a>, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-economy-putin-ukraine-war-military-spending-budget-kremlin-inflation-2023-10">war in Ukraine,</a> or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/shocking-video-shows-ohio-police-officer-killing-pregnant-black-woman-2023-9">violence in the US</a>. <a target="_blank" href="https://faculty.sites.uci.edu/rsilver/">Dr. Roxane Cohen Silver</a>, a distinguished professor at the Department of Psychological Science at the University of California, Irvine, has been researching the <keyword id="21003062" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="psychological-impact" source="keywords">psychological impact</keyword> of viewing traumatic footage for over 20 years. Silver told Insider that when she began <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/23484662">her research during the Iraq War</a>, people primarily got their news from television, print media, and the radio. That meant that people would have to actively seek out some of the videos and images that are now very difficult to avoid. Since then, the media landscape has drastically changed. "People now carry smartphones in their hands," she said. "They're very powerful cameras, and so very graphic images can be taken and distributed instantaneously on social media, and all of that really changes what it is that people are seeing." She said the extreme exposure to war violence poses serious mental and even physical health risks — and no psychological benefits. <h2>People can react to graphic content as if they experienced trauma</h2>While a screen separates viewers from violent imagery, Silver said that it doesn't necessarily reduce the impact. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/23484662">Her research</a> found that people who watched more videos of violent events were more likely to exhibit the same symptoms as people who directly experienced trauma. In the first few weeks of exposure to graphic content, she said viewers can exhibit symptoms of acute stress such as flashbacks, anxiety, hypervigilance, difficulty dismissing the images, and potential nightmares. The types of images matter too. She said that "the gruesomeness, the graphicness, the bloodiness of the content" tended to correlate with more dramatic symptoms. <h2>People who are afraid are more likely to seek out these images</h2>A catch-22 Silver found is that the people seeking out graphic footage aren't necessarily the ones who are more desensitized and indifferent, but the opposite. "The more people are stressed out by these images or by this content, the more they're drawn to more images and more content about the violence," she said. For example, when videos of ISIS beheadings were circulating years ago, <a target="_blank" href="https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2019-09638-001">her research found </a>that "people who were more worried about terrorism were more likely to be seeking out these images." This leads to a cycle that's difficult to break. "More exposure leads to increased stress, and increased stress draws people to seeking out or being exposed to more of that content," Silver said. <h2>People with similar identities to the victims are more impacted</h2>Silver's research also found that people who in some way identify with the victims of a particular event tend to be more drawn to and more impacted by violent content. For example, after the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/pulse-survivor-reflects-that-same-nightmare-after-colorado-springs-shooting-2022-11">2016 Pulse nightclub shooting</a> in Orlando, <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=33c42ab750e7921627bcce8d6eada2324ed753247b6ca6a2782e7178934b5cc2&amp;postID=65317a98cf767c5e2eacbe29&amp;postSlug=why-some-people-cant-stop-watching-gruesome-graphic-war-videos-2023-10&amp;site=in&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41598-023-33898-2">Silver's research found </a>that people who identified as Hispanic and/or part of the LGBTQ+ community were consuming more content surrounding the event. This can play into the hands of those who want members of certain groups to be afraid. Silver cited the recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shani-louk-mom-learned-kidnapped-by-hamas-on-social-media-2023-10">Hamas attack in Israel</a> and the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/new-zealand-shooting-christchurch-2019-3">2019 New Zealand mosque shooting</a> as examples of livestreamed rampages, with perpetrators deliberately circulating the clips online. "They're trying to create fear in the population, and they're doing it by taking these graphic images," she said, adding that people who are naturally concerned and furious can unknowingly spread fear by watching and reposting the videos. <h2>You can stay informed without exposing yourself to violence</h2>It might feel like you're supporting victims of a crisis by bearing witness to the violence that they're enduring.But Silver said "there's no psychological benefit in seeing the images, and particularly seeing them over and over again." If anything, they can be psychologically harmful. "I'm not advocating that people avoid the news," she said. "If the ultimate goal is to stay abreast of the latest information, one can do that without exposure to the graphic images." Taking lessons from her own research, she's made it a point to avoid clicking on violent images and videos when she reads the news. But, she admits, it can be difficult. "I hold my hands over my eyes if I'm scrolling to try to find the content to read," she said. "I take great pains to avoid the images, but I can still stay very informed."
