The pair previously played the same roles opposite each other in Erica Schmidt's stage musical adaptation of the original Edmond Rostand play during the musical's 2018 run at the Goodspeed Opera House, <a href="https://playbill.com/article/peter-dinklage-and-haley-bennett-to-reprise-cyrano-roles-in-mgm-movie-musical-adaptation">Playbill reported</a>. </p><p>"He drinks my snot a lot," Bennett told Insider during a recent press day for the film. "He drank a lot on stage. For some reason, when we would be onstage together during that tragic ending, it never failed that my snot would just drip into his mouth. In love with Roxanne but full of self-doubt, Cyrano de Bergerac ghostwrites love letters to her on behalf of his subordinate Christian, whom Roxanne has fallen in love with. At the end of the story, Roxanne realizes that Cyrano was the one who had been writing the letters, moments before he dies. </p><p>It's an emotional moment that involves lots of tears. And also, apparently, sometimes snot.</p><p>"He drank my snot. It's not romantic at all," Bennett told Insider. The pair regularly sing together as they try to come up with a song for rising pop star Cora (Haley Bennett), which Grant has admitted didn't sound as good on set as it did to audiences.</p><p>"Does Hugh Grant actually sing in 'Music and Lyrics?'" Pine said, reading out the question to which Grant responded: "Yes, well I do, but I'm auto-tuned beyond belief."</p><p>"Actually, that's not true, I'm auto-tuned a bit, but not as much as some," he continued. Starring <keyword id="12801951" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="peter-dinklage" source="Orion">Peter Dinklage</keyword> and Haley Bennett, the film is an adaptation of Erica Schmidt's 2018 musical theater take on the original Edmond Rostand play "Cyrano de Bergerac." </p><p>Wright's work has been in spotlight on social media, however, in recent years, even before the premiere of "Cyrano." <a href="https://www.insider.com/hand-flex-pride-and-prejudice-meme-tiktoks-interview-editor-2020-11">As Insider's Kim Renfro reported in 2020</a>, one particular moment from Wright's "Pride and Prejudice" became a mainstay on TikTok 15 years after the film release.</p><p>"I would have never imagined that Darcy's hand flex would be iconic on TikTok," Wright told Insider, saying that he hadn't been previously aware of the fandom fixation.</p><p>In the film, Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) flexes his hand outward as he walks away from Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley), having touched her for the first time.</p><p>At the time the small moment went viral in 2020, Paul Tothill, the film's editor, told Renfro that he thought that Wright "had a fantastic time" shooting subtlety-laden film, and that the pair "had a very happy time in the cutting room."</p> <p>Wright hypothesized about a potentially similar moment to Darcy's hand flex that happens in "Cyrano" during the balcony sequence, which he called the "fulcrum" of the film.</p><p>"I know that [in 'Cyrano'] there's a moment as Christian climbs the balcony to kiss Roxanne where Cyrano almost feels the kiss himself," Wright told me. "He kind of puckers up a little bit. And I know that tiny detail meant the world to me."</p><p>In the sequence, Cyrano (Peter Dinklage) speaks directly to Roxanne (Haley Bennett), hidden behind a pillar and pretending to be Christian, the man that Roxanne has fallen in love with through Cyrano's words. It's the first time that he's able to directly express his sentiments verbally to her, rather than in a letter signed with Christian's name. </p><p>"I wanted to get across a sense of yearning and a sense of how unfair love could be, and a sense of freedom for Cyrano to be able to freely speak from his own heart," Wright told Insider. "That felt most important and powerful."</p>

Based on Erica Schmidt's 2018 stage musical adaptation, and with Schmidt herself penning the screenplay, the film also stars Haley Bennett as Roxanne and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Christian. </p><p>Filmed during the pandemic in the <a href="https://www.cntraveler.com/story/on-location-cyrano#:~:text=Unlike%20many%20modern%20blockbusters%2C%20Cyrano,the%20streets%20of%20golden%20Noto.">Sicilian town of Noto,</a> Wright said that he wanted a "strong visual juxtaposition" for the film's battle sequence. And "there was Mount Etna," he told Insider — the volcano, which is still active, is located just over 120 kilometers (about 78 miles) from the film's primary location. </p><p>"We went up there and scouted and we found a position near the summit at about 16,000 feet, and we said, 'It's not gonna snow, is it?'" Wright recalled. "And they said, 'No, it never snows in December, only in February it sometimes gets some snow."</p><p>Wright told Insider that the crew built a set up at the 16,000-feet location, complete with World War I-esque trenches, a large camera platform, and a 100-foot Technocrane. </p><p>"We had it all worked out very, very precisely, and then four days before we were due to start shooting that sequence, it started snowing," Wright said. "It snowed and snowed, and buried our set and buried the camera platform, the camera crane, and actually made the whole set completely inaccessible. We couldn't get there."</p><p>Production was then forced to "improvise a new location" and set up at around 8,000 feet, where the air was still thin, Wright told Insider. Then, Mount Etna erupted.</p><p>"On the last day of shooting, the volcano chose to erupt," Wright told Insider. "We were having volcanic rock and dust and ash thrown at us, and so we picked up our camera cases and ran off the mountain."</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmlNMPtkSPA">Footage from NBC News published on December 14, 2020</a> shows lava and ash erupting from the volcano. Citing data from the <a href="https://www.ct.ingv.it/">Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV)</a>, the <a href="https://volcano.si.edu/showreport.cfm?doi=GVP.WVAR20201216-211060">Smithsonian Institute's Global Volcanism Program reported</a> that the southwest part of the volcano's cone had collapsed on December 13, 2020, and lava flows continued through the following week. </p><p>"I remember that night, it was the 18th of December, and it took off from <keyword id="11917117" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sicily" source="Orion">Sicily</keyword> and we looked down through the aircraft window and you could see this burning red eye of the volcano mouth staring at us," Wright told Insider. "And we're like, okay, we're out of here."</p>

'Cyrano' director reveals the crew had to pick up their cameras and run off Mount Etna when the volcano erupted during filming

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The new reboot of the&#xa0;1960 classic Western "The Magnificent Seven," out September 23, is nowhere close to the original - and that's not a knock.<p>The film - directed by Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day," "Southpaw") and starring&#xa0;Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, and Peter Sarsgaard - is very much a reimagining, with the premise still intact: A group of gunfighters is hired to defeat a tyrant. But that's about all that's kept. Even the iconic Elmer Bernstein score from the original only gets a cameo in the end credits.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Fuqua's take on this classic is blood-soaked and thrilling, but also filled with dark humor. And at times Washington and Hawke bring out some deeper dramatic moments.<p>In the original, the seven gunslingers are hired by poor Mexican farmers to help them ward off a group of bandits. This time around, it's the town of Rose Krick that's in trouble, as it's being taken over by an industrialist named Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard) who has overpowered the town by buying off the sheriff and killing any man who gets in his way.</p><p>After seeing her husband killed by Bogue, Emma (Haley Bennett) takes it upon herself to seek out men who can overthrow Bogue.</p><p>Washington, paying homage to Yul Brynner's all-black wardrobe in the original, plays bounty hunter Sam Chisolm, who agrees to help Emma and begins enlisting the likes of an assassin (Byung-hun Lee), a sharpshooter (Hawke), a Comanche warrior (Martin Sensmeier), a tracker (Vincent D'Onofrio), and a Mexican outlaw (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo).</p><p>Along for the ride is the often intoxicated gambler Josh Farraday, embodied&#xa0;with the usual playfully sarcastic tone of Pratt. He brings needed comic relief with some great one-liners, and gets some millage out of quick jokes that Steve McQueen says in the original.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The body count in this movie is more on the level of "The Wild Bunch" than the original "<span>Magnificent Seven</span>," but the motivations for the men taking&#xa0;the job are deeper-rooted and more personal, a testament to screenwriters Richard Wenk and "True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto.<p>The creatives behind the movie should also be applauded for the Emma character. In an era when Hollywood is finally expected to give female characters their due,&#xa0;Bennett shows Emma as a tough, independent woman who isn't scared to grab a gun and get in the mix. A far cry from most women seen&#xa0;in the Western genre.</p><p>"The Magnificent Seven" certainly has its flaws, and head-scratching choices (like the high-pitched voice D'Onofrio decided to go with for his character). 'The Magnificent Seven' is an ultra-violent thrill ride with the best stars money can buy

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Sony</span></p><p class="caption">"The Magnificent Seven."</p></div><p></p></div></div>Who says the Western is dead?</p><p>Sony's "The Magnificent Seven" has proven that a movie without any superheros and catered more for adults can make some coin as it took in an estimated $35 million at the box office, according to <a href="https://twitter.com/ercboxoffice/status/780054812402548736" target="_blank">Exhibitor Relations</a>.</p><p>The shoot-'em-up starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, and breakthrough star Haley Bennett (who is also in the anticipated "The Girl on the Train") had a strong Friday with with <a href="http://deadline.com/2016/09/magnificent-seven-storks-sully-weekend-box-office-1201824971/" target="_blank">$12.6 million</a> on the day (including $1.7 million from Thursday previews) and finishing the weekend with $35 million that puts it second all-time for biggest opening weekend for a live-action Western (2011's "Cowboys &amp; Aliens" <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?id=western.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm" target="_blank">$36.4 million</a>, all-time is 2011 animated Western "Rango" with <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?id=western.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm" target="_blank">$38 million</a>).</p><p>The movie is the biggest box office opening for director Antoine Fuqua and star Washington, as this marks their third time working together. Their past biggest success was 2014's "The Equalizer" (<a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?view=Director&amp;id=antoinefuqua.htm&amp;sort=opengross&amp;order=DESC&amp;p=.htm" target="_blank">$34.1 million</a>).   </p><p>We'll see what kind of staying power "Seven" has with stiff competition coming: "Deepwater Horizon" and Tim Burton's "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" opening next week and "The Girl on the Train" the following week.</p><p>The weekend's other big release came in second place as Warner Bros. animated movie "Storks" took in <a href="https://twitter.com/ercboxoffice/status/780048868830547968" target="_blank">$21.8 million</a>. And with his performance in "The Girl on the Train" (opening in theaters October 7), that star will continue to climb.<p>The best-selling book by British author Paula Hawkins, which has now been adapted into a Hollywood movie, stars Emily Blunt as Rachel Watson, an alcoholic who is reeling from a divorce and finds herself entangled in a missing persons investigation. Theroux plays Rachel's former husband, Tom.</p><p>Though the story is centered on Rachel and two other women, Megan (Haley Bennett, "The Magnificent Seven") and Anna (Rebecca Ferguson, "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation"), Theroux's Tom character is an integral part of its very dark moments (if you've read the book you know what I'm talking about).</p><p>Business Insider spoke with Theroux about this character you won't forget anytime soon, what's in store for the final season of "The Leftovers," his thoughts on "Zoolander 2" (which he was a co-writer on) being a box office disappointment, and his reaction to Aniston being thrust into the coverage of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/report-angelina-jolie-files-for-divorce-from-brad-pitt-2016-9">Angelina Jolie-Brad Pitt divorce</a>.</p><p><em>Warning: Spoilers ahead regarding the Tom character in "The Girl on the Train"</em></p><p><strong>Jason Guerrasio: Are you prepared to go down in history as one of the most&#xa0;despicable&#xa0;husband characters?</strong><br><br><strong>Justin Theroux:</strong> [<em>Laughs</em>] Yes.&#xa0;<br><br><strong>Guerrasio: I was thinking about this on the train coming home from the movie.</strong>&#xa0;<br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> How&#xa0;appropriate.&#xa0;<br><br><strong>Guerrasio: You got performances like Harrison Ford in "What Lies Beneath," Michael Douglas in "A Perfect Murder," that dude who played Julia Roberts' husband in "Sleeping with the Enemy," Patrick Bergin -</strong><br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> Yes!<br><br><strong>Guerrasio: Your performance is up there with those&#xa0;portrayals of awful husbands.</strong><br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> I'm glad. As long as it's not the last thing I do then I'll be happy. [<em>Laughs</em>]<br><br><strong>Guerrasio: Did you go back and watch really bad guy husband roles, or just go with the source material?</strong><br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> I kind of just went on the source material. Weirdly, I think the thing you can run afoul with is if you make the character too mustache-twisty or telegraph it. Especially for those who have not read the book, you don't want to ruin it. And this may sound a little douchey-actor-speak, but in reading the book and doing some research, Tom isn't a psychopath or sociopath, he's not Robert De Niro in "Cape Fear" -<br><br /></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></br></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Guerrasio: He's not concocting murders.</strong><br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> Yes, exactly. It's not premeditated. It's what's presented to him. So I was thinking about how this guy could bring himself to do that as opposed to the rational thing of talking things through with your spouse. And what I figured was he's a narcissist and does a lot of blaming to the women that he's been wronging. That, to me, was the key hole I found to get into the character. Just play him straight.<br><br><strong>Guerrasio: Was it fun to play this character differently, basically, every take? The personas you have to display to tell his story shift dramatically from scene to scene.&#xa0;</strong><br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> Yes. Some of it is in [Rachel's] memory, so I'm shooting scenes in how she thinks Tom is and then there's reality. But what's crazy is, for him, he can justify his actions, that's scary.<br><br><strong>Guerrasio: But were there times when you were shooting where you had to ask director Tate Taylor or someone, "Am I playing my hand too much? Should we show him at this level of aggression?"</strong><br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> Yes. There were even times in the early scenes when I'm playing happy homemaker where I felt like I was just being boring with the character. And Tate would correctly say, "Well, yeah, you should be boring because we don't want to reveal anything." So I took the tack of when Rachel is stalking him to play him as a victim.&#xa0;<br><br><strong>Guerrasio: So were you between seasons of "The Leftovers" when you shot this? Where was your head at?</strong><br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> It was a real breath of fresh air at the end of the second season. [<em>Laughs</em>] It really was. I finished up on season two and had just gotten home, and waiting for me was this script and a note saying "Tate wants to speak to you immediately." So I read it overnight, talked to him, he offered me the part and within a couple of days I was flying to start prepping it. I mean, this was almost like a romantic comedy in comparison to "The Leftovers."<br><br><strong>Guerrasio: And you've wrapped on the last season of "The Leftovers," right?</strong><br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> Yeah, we just wrapped like three days ago.&#xa0;<br><br><strong>Guerrasio: Is Kevin still in your head? Is it hard to kick him?</strong><br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> I love that character so much and more importantly I love that show, so because it's the last season it's bittersweet to say goodbye to that family -<br><br><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Guerrasio: But there are so many peaks and valleys for this guy -</strong><br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> It's true.&#xa0;<br><br><strong>Guerrasio: Do you take that home with you?</strong><br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> I'd love to be one of those guys who could be like, "Yeah, it's really exhausting," but the truth is I'm not method. I don't take roles home. And there's something cathartic about playing those kinds of parts. In a weird way you kind of exorcise them. You get rid of them the minute you play them. I can have tough days at work on "The Leftovers" where we are doing big emotional work and then at the end of it I can feel kind of lightened.<br><br><strong>Guerrasio: We <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/justin-theroux-interview-zoolander-2-2016-2">talked last for "Zoolander 2"</a> and back then you said you didn't know if the last seasons of "The Leftovers" would go out like a whimper or a bang, so what is season three like?</strong><br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> It's still very much our show. It's not like we all jumped into the back seat and coasted. It's same show, different location. [Show co-creator] Damon Lindelof didn't let up on any of us as far as what we had to go through and experience. I won't say anything specific, but I will say I'm extremely gratified by the final episode and felt like it put a ribbon on things in a beautiful way.&#xa0;<br><br><strong>Guerrasio: And in regards to "Zoolander 2," it didn't do the business I'm sure you guys had hoped for, any regrets you or Ben Stiller have about making a sequel?</strong><br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> No. I'm proud of that movie. Whether it did well commercially or even critically, I thought critically there were some very unfair reviews, but you never know when you make a film how it's going to be received. I'm a big believer that the reception is not the endeavor. And what I enjoy about almost all my work is the endeavor, the doing of something. For "Zoolander 2" I had three years of developing it, working on it with Ben, shooting it, all extremely happy memories. And to me that's my experience of it. As far as the financial or critical success of it, it's a shame, you want to drop your kid off at school and have everyone be nice, but on the other hand you can't control it. That's why we make new movies.&#xa0;<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><br><strong>Guerrasio: With the news of Angelina Jolie filing for divorce from Brad Pitt your wife has been thrust into the coverage of the story. I've always been curious, how do you two ignore all of the tabloids that are so obsessed with her?</strong><br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> It's just not in our house. I'll say this, she's been in the public eye a very long time, I've been in the public eye not as long as it relates to this nonsense, but as a child of divorce all I can say is that's terrible news for those children and that's all you can really say. It's boring to comment on anything else. People are having a bad time, that's horrible.&#xa0;<br><br><strong>Guerrasio: You point out that your wife has been dealing with this much longer than you have, has there been a moment that has scared you or disturbed you in how aggressive the paparazzi are to get to her?</strong><br><br><strong>Theroux:</strong> No, not really. But there's no handbook for anybody for going through it. Scared isn't the right word or alarmed or anything like that, it's more bad weather. Some weeks it rolls in and it rains and then, whatever, you just put on your rain coat and bring an umbrella. Some days it's sunny and it's fine. You kind of have to look at it like that because there's no remedy. There's an endless appetite for trash, apparently, although everyone would say they don't have that appetite, but I think a lot of people do because people buy it. But there are bigger things to b---- about. Justin Theroux on his intense role in 'The Girl on the Train' and his thoughts on Brangelina

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>After decades working as a struggling actor, Tate Taylor found his big break in his mid-40s as the director of Oscar winner "The Help." Now he's at the helm of the adaptation of the best-selling novel "The Girl on the Train."<p>A steamy thriller in the vein of "Gone Girl," the story centers on Rachel (Emily Blunt), an alcoholic whose divorce to Tom (Justin Theroux) has led her into a deep depression. And things aren't any better on her Metro-North train commute from Westchester to Manhattan as she passes her old house, where Tom has started a new life with Anna (Rebecca Ferguson, who was in "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation").</p><p>Rachel has also become infatuated with Megan (Haley Bennett, "The Magnificent Seven"), who lives a few doors down from Tom's place and is often standing on her balcony wearing very little clothing. But when Megan goes missing, Rachel must figure out if, in her blackout drunk moments, she may have been involved.</p><p>The book, written by British author Paula Hawkins, was an instant hit when it came out in 2015, and Universal quickly snatched up the rights to it. But as with most adaptations, this one sometimes veers away from the source material (it's set in New York City instead of London).</p><p>Business Insider talked to Taylor about the challenges of adapting a book that is beloved by many, and looking back at "The Help" in a post-#OscarsSoWhite Hollywood.</p><p><em>Warning: Spoilers ahead if you've never read "The Girl on the Train."</em></p><p><strong>Jason Guerrasio: What's the biggest challenge of adapting a best-selling book?</strong></p><p><strong>Tate Taylor:</strong> My answer doesn't really come from me solving a problem - it comes from what I knew I wanted to do. When you have a book that everybody has read, and even those who read the book the first time kind of figured out it was Tom, I was like, "Okay, this is a thriller and this is what people want to see and that could be a big, big problem." Because your engine is exposed. But the great solution for that was a natural one. I was drawn to this material because of the character work and how deeply it dove into regret and betrayal and manipulation. I realized if I leaned into that - the sexuality, the violence, the mental abuse - it's not so much that it would district you from who did it, it just fills your brain with so much stuff it's truly a companion to that part versus making one stronger than the other.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: To show what is going on in Rachel's head, was that a jigsaw puzzle to pull off in postproduction?</strong></p><p><strong>Taylor:</strong> This movie was made in the editing room if ever a movie has been made. I mean, it was both scary and cool.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Guerrasio: Because I would imagine there's only so much screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson can put on the page to give you some runway.</strong><p><strong>Taylor:</strong> Yeah. I came on board and Erin had done this amazing heavy lifting starting this. But then as a filmmaker I realized that there were big holes, meaning there were things you just don't get to do in a movie. You don't get to say that Rachel suddenly remembers everything. That's when I created the character of Monica [Lisa Kudrow]. I wrote that all out. In the novel [author] Paula [Hawkins] says Rachel remembers so I'm like we don't get to do that or this is going to all unravel. So I went back to the book and Paula had written a brief little blurb in Rachel's narration that "Tom used to tell me I would embarrass him at his work parties," and I went, okay, I'm going to blow that up. And then with Megan's character, she's so sexual and I knew that she would be judged by the audience and not with much favor, so that's when I went back to the book and realized to serve this genre and serve this piece I needed to play out what happened with her baby. So it was really going through with the book as a director and writer saying this read well but this is not going to play well. Where are the holes? Where will people get up and go to the bathroom or roll their eyes?</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: But then there's the change of location from London to New York, which could turn off die-hard fans. Was that already decided when you came on to the movie?</strong></p><p><strong>Taylor:</strong> That predated me by a year.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: Did you walk in nervous about how fans would react to that?</strong></p><p><strong>Taylor:</strong> To be honest, I made the mistake of checking the online chatter when I signed on to the movie and I saw that there wasn't a huge revolt at all, it was more of a why. But I think wonderful things happened because of that choice. Because of that, the day I met Emily I decided to keep her accent. I told myself, that's only going to add to her loneliness and despair. If she's in America and she has no job and lives on a mattress on a floor, she probably can't afford to go home and she's probably told them back at home the biggest lie ever. She can't go home like this. So that made it exciting for me. But the thing is I shot all these New York beauty shots and really shot the heck out of Grand Central Station, but when I put the movie together they were just kind of shoe leather. I didn't need it. And then I went back to the book and realized that Rachel just talks about London, it's not a character. So it really is universal and doesn't matter because the movie takes place between these women's ears and on a train.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: You guys decided on Metro-North. Did you have other ideas for the commute?</strong></p><p><strong>Taylor:</strong> We looked at all the lines, frankly I rode them all.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: I will say, I've spent most of my life riding into New York City, and I've never seen a beautiful woman standing outside on a balcony as the train goes by.</strong></p><p><strong>Taylor:</strong> Yeah, that doesn't happen.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: Movie magic.</strong></p><p><strong>Taylor:</strong> Yeah. [<em>Laughs</em>]</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: What was your biggest fear going into postproduction?</strong></p><p><strong>Taylor:</strong> I had to trust that people would go with the beginning of the film. I had to trust that if people stayed with me and really got in with these characters and this mood that it would really make the movie satisfying.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: It is unusual how you thrust us right into Rachel's clouded mind from the start.</strong></p><p><strong>Taylor:</strong> You don't see it enough in movies. You may get one character that you do that, but to have three characters back-to-back? And with "The Help" I had the voices of three women, but this is the other thing that hit me like a ton of bricks: They were in scenes together in "The Help," these women are not.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong>Guerrasio: You mention "The Help." I was thinking about this, you made that and right after the James Brown biopic "Get on Up." Right after that the #OscarsSoWhite debate really made waves in the industry. What was that time like? Finding success with "The Help," but being a white man telling these stories.</strong><p><strong>Taylor:</strong> First it was "How dare a white guy tell black stories?" And you're going to love this, I got asked the other day, "How can you leave black people out of this movie?" I literally said, "I can't win." [<em>Laughs</em>] I don't know what to say about it, it's a business, man. It makes no sense. There's no rhyme or reason. The best thing from "The Help" was my best friend and roommate of five years [Octavia Spencer] got an Oscar and her life has changed forever. That's fun, that's really cool. And I think that came from pure recognition of an amazing job she did. I don't think that was a political win whatsoever. I think there's moments with the awards season where all the b------t cannot stop something inevitable. I think what "The Help" did, which excites me, is when I was going around with "The Help," the fear was it's black-themed material, does it do well? Look what came out after "The Help."</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: With all the current circumstances could you, a white director, make "The Help" today?</strong></p><p><strong>Taylor:</strong> And I was just a nobody?</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: Yes.</strong></p><p><strong>Taylor:</strong> Here's my answer, and it's not the answer you want to hear, the reason "The Help" got made was because Steven Spielberg read my script and he said, "If this guy wrote that, he's already directed the movie - let's do it." Hopefully, I would like to think that's still in play today. I think it is. I think despite the circumstances, instincts tell you to just do this, it has happened to me on projects I've acquired. I think that will always be around.</p><p><strong>Guerrasio: Are you uncomfortable talking about the #OscarsSoWhite phenomenon?</strong></p><p><strong>Taylor:</strong> I don't talk about it.
