<ul class="summary-list"><li>Strawberry legs cause a bumpy, pitted appearance that resembles the skin of a strawberry.</li><li>It's usually caused by ingrown hairs, folliculitis, keratosis pilaris, and clogged pores.</li><li>You can get rid of strawberry legs by moisturizing, exfoliating, and changing your shaving habits. </li></ul><p>"Strawberry legs" refers to the general phenomenon when legs appear to have dark spots or divots on the surface that resemble a strawberry.</p><p>While the causes of strawberry legs aren't dangerous, you still may experience discomfort or be concerned about their appearance. But luckily, most causes of strawberry legs can be treated by properly caring for the skin on your legs. </p><p>Here are five of the most common causes of strawberry legs and how to prevent them. </p><h2>1. Keratosis pilaris</h2><p>This is a common condition that causes <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/keratosis-pilaris/symptoms-causes/syc-20351149" target="_blank" rel="noopener">excessive amounts of keratin</a> — a type of protein in your skin — to build up in your hair follicles, says <a href="https://www.drhadleyking.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hadley King, MD</a>, board-certified dermatologist in private practice. </p><p>It isn't clear what causes keratosis pilaris, but the harmless condition may cause additional symptoms like:</p><ul><li>Bumps</li><li>Dry skin</li><li>Rough skin</li></ul><h2>2. Clogged pores</h2><p>Just like your face can get <a href="https://www.insider.com/types-of-acne" target="_blank" rel="noopener">open comedones</a> — also known as blackheads — so can your legs. Blackheads look like black, seed-like bumps that may appear anywhere on your body. </p><p>This happens when pores on your legs become clogged with dead skin, oil, or debris, says ​​<a href="https://www.mdcsnyc.com/provider/marisa-k-garshick-md" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Marisa Garshick, MD, FAAD</a>, board-certified dermatologist at <a href="https://www.mdcsnyc.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MDCS Dermatology</a>.</p><p>Blackheads can be caused by anything from changes in hormones, increased oil production, and bacteria that get into your skin.</p><h2>3. Razor burn and ingrown hairs </h2><p>If you shave your legs without using shaving cream or gel, you might experience red bumps or rashes as a result of razor burn, says King. </p><p>Furthermore, you can get <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/ingrown-hair/symptoms-causes/syc-20373893" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ingrown hairs</a> from waxing or shaving because removing hair causes the end of the follicle to become sharp. This makes it more likely to reenter the skin if the hair curls back in on itself.</p><p>Ingrown hairs can result in bumps, itching, and potentially pain. You might even be able to see a dark spot where the hair is embedded and trapped under the skin. </p><h2>4. Folliculitis</h2><p><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/folliculitis/symptoms-causes/syc-20361634#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Folliculitis</a> is when your hair follicles become inflamed, which is typically due to bacteria or fungi that get on your skin from things like <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/folliculitis/symptoms-causes/syc-20361634" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shaving</a> or unclean hot tubs or pools. </p><p>This results in redness, bumps, or pimples around the hair follicle, says Garshick. It ranges in severity – you can have anything from small bumps to larger blisters filled with pus. </p><h2>5. Having dark hair</h2><p>Even without any of the above conditions, you might still experience the look of strawberry legs. </p><p>"Simply having dark or coarse hair can predispose you to strawberry legs, as when the hair is shaved, it can still leave behind a dark dot that appears visible since the hair is a darker color," says Garshick.</p><h2>How to care for your skin to prevent strawberry legs</h2><p>If you don't like the look of your strawberry legs or if you're experiencing discomfort, there are a few simple fixes you can try.</p><h3>1. Change your shaving habits</h3><p>You should shave with sharp clean razors, and change your blades<a href="https://www.aad.org/public/everyday-care/skin-care-basics/hair/how-to-shave/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> every five to seven shaves</a>, says King. When shaving, you should also:</p><ol><li>Shave with the direction of hair growth rather than against it</li><li>Use lubricating shave gel, cream, or oil</li><li>Moisturize after shaving</li></ol><p>These steps can all help reduce irritation and help prevent a bacterial infection or ingrown hairs, King says. </p><h3>2. Exfoliate</h3><p>Exfoliating the skin on your legs can help rid dead skin cells and improve the overall texture of your skin. Garshick says you can look for products that contain any of the following exfoliants that will help unclog your pores:</p><ul><li>Lactic acid</li><li>Glycolic acid</li><li>Salicylic acid</li></ul><p>Exfoliating with rough scrubs is also an option. However, Garshick says you should be gentle with them to minimize the potential for irritation. You can also look for exfoliating products meant for sensitive skin. For example, both King and Garshick recommend the <a href="https://www.dove.com/us/en/washing-and-bathing/body-wash/gentle-exfoliating-body-wash-with-sea-minerals.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dove Gentle Exfoliating Body Wash with Sea Minerals</a>.</p><h3>3. Moisturize </h3><p>For all causes of strawberry legs, keeping your skin hydrated can help –– especially if you're experiencing keratosis pilaris, Garshick says. Look for oil-free creams and lotions that hydrate and lock in moisture. </p><p>You should moisturize your legs <a href="https://www.aad.org/public/diseases/a-z/keratosis-pilaris-self-care" target="_blank" rel="noopener">two to three times</a> per day including after bathing or showering.</p><h3>4. Consider laser hair removal</h3><p>If the cause of your strawberry legs is ingrown hairs or dark, coarse hair, laser hair removal can be a more permanent solution since it eliminates the hair follicle at the root, says Garshick. Zellweger, 53, said she loves getting older, and celebrating her 50th birthday in 2019 felt like getting a clean slate.</p><p>"Turning 50 felt like a whole new beginning without the nonsense, the point where you can stop listening to all those voices in your head and all those expectations and projections people have of you and become more authentically yourself," she told The Sunday Times. "Like, good luck all you suckers out there because you've got to survive a lot to get to my age, and I've earned my power and voice."</p><p>The outlet notes that Zellweger was scrutinized in the past over rumors she had cosmetic surgery on her face. Acne</h2><p>It's possible to get acne from clogged pores all over your body-including your vulva. Kimble says you should avoid common topical acne treatments like benzoyl peroxide, which are too harsh for this sensitive area.</p><h2>2. Ingrown hairs</h2><p>Ingrown hairs happen when a hair grows back into the skin. They often present as red, painful bumps.</p><p>If you shave or wax your pubic hair, this may put you at a higher risk for ingrown hairs,  says Kimble.</p><p><strong>How to treat it: </strong>Kimble says you should avoid further hair removal techniques until the area is fully healed. In the meantime, she says you should keep the area clean, and soothe the skin with a warm compress such as a washcloth soaked in hot water - but not so hot that it's uncomfortable for the skin.</p><p>Then, gently exfoliate with a scrub (you can opt for ones specifically for the bikini area).</p><h2>3. Folliculitis</h2><p><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/folliculitis/symptoms-causes/syc-20361634" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Folliculitis</a> is when an ingrown hair becomes trapped and inflamed, says Peace Nwegbo-Banks MD, FACOG, board-certified OB/GYN at <a href="https://www.serenity-women.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Serenity Women's Health and Med Spa</a>. </p><p>In addition to a  swollen bump, you may experience redness, swelling, and tenderness. Typically, this is caused by an infection due to bacteria or a fungus.</p><p><strong>How to treat it: </strong>You may need a <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/folliculitis/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20361662" target="_blank" rel="noopener">prescription antibiotic, antibacterial cream, or antifungal cream to treat your folliculitis</a> depending on the type of infection. In more severe cases, oral antibiotics, prescribed by your doctor, may be necessary.</p><h2>4. Molluscum contagiosum</h2><p><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/molluscum-contagiosum/symptoms-causes/syc-20375226">Molluscum contagiosum</a> is a viral infection resulting in painless, small, flesh-colored bumps that typically have a dimple in the middle of them, says Nwegbo-Banks. If they are irritated, they may become itchy, red, and inflamed. </p><p><strong>How to treat it: </strong>It's possible for molluscum contagiosum to go away on its own in three to six months, Kimble says. </p><p>However, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/poxvirus/molluscum-contagiosum/treatment.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">treatment options </a>require a doctor's visit and include:</p><ul><li>Cryotherapy (freezing the lesions off)</li><li>Curettage (scraping the lesions off)</li><li>Laser therapy</li><li>Prescription topical creams</li></ul><p><strong>Important:</strong> Molluscum contagiosum is <a href="https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/stds-hiv-safer-sex/molluscum-contagiosum/how-can-i-make-sure-i-dont-get-or-spread-molluscum-contagiosum" target="_blank" rel="noopener">contagious</a> and can be spread through skin-to-skin contact, sex, or shared clothing. If you think you have this condition, avoid touching others.</p><h2>5. Genital warts</h2><p><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/genital-warts/symptoms-causes/syc-20355234" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Genital warts </a>are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). </p><p>They range from small bumps to raised bulky, flesh-colored lesions, says Kimble. Work from home and lack of social gatherings meant lesser business for the salons. Also, people remain wary regarding the safety of getting any beauty procedures done outside. <br /><br /><strong>Here’s what worked in the beauty industry <br /></strong><br />So, the beauty industry has settled for the simpler things – people took to self-grooming as they spent time at home. This is more than six times the overall e-commerce growth,” said a report by Unicommerce on India’s online retail market. <br /><br />That explains the fast rise of beauty retail <keyword id="6362513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups">startups</keyword> like Nykaa, which has solidified an online as well as offline presence. The beauty e-commerce platform has also announced major sales and forayed into the home and travel care essentials category during the past few months.<br /><br />“We have seen favorable trends in customer buying behavior including higher AOVs (average order volumes) as customers are willing to spend more on platforms such as Nykaa. While personal care is growing for us, we are seeing an overall return in demand across traditional categories such as make up and are currently tracking higher than pre-lockdown numbers,” a Nykaa spokesperson told Business Insider. <br /><br /><strong>At home, Do-It-Yourself</strong><br /><br />With people staying away from salons, quick home solutions became important. As non-essential deliveries began, trimmers and grooming devices saw a surge in demand across e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal and Paytm Mall.<br /><br />The beauty and wellness category has seen a 57% jump in demand in June 2020 as compared to February 2020, according to the Unicommerce report. <br /><br />From women resorting to YouTube tutorials to cut their hair to taking care of their own beauty needs, DIY kits are the flavour of the season. <br /><br />“In our case things came back to business-as-usual on the skincare and haircare fronts. People were ordering a lot more of specialist solutions, face packs, scrubs and creams. Our skin care kits are seeing excellent demand. These have always been about DIY skin care at home, and therefore ideally suited in a "locked down" environment,” said Shankar Prasad, Founder of beauty and wellness startup Plum. <br /><br />And for those not indulging in DIY, home services came to the rescue. Even in men’s grooming, after months of growing out their hair, men's haircuts become the most in-demand service for a home services startup Urban Company. <br /><br />“Relatively speaking, men’s grooming people tried DIY, but cutting your hair is fairly problematic so its rebounding faster and that category has grown five times from where we were pre-COVID, but their consumption in beauty beyond that is limited,” said Mukund Kulashekaran, SVP of Business, Urban Company.<br /><br />For women, Kulashekaran says its a mixed response as the main trigger for demand has been the need to go back to office or festivals. “Otherwise people will make-do for sometime with alternative versions of waxing for instance. I would say one in two women are being safe even now. However, Delhi has come back for us to 70-80% of pre-COVID levels while Tier II and III cities, which haven’t yet really seen the impact of COVID-19, have bounced back 100%,” he said. <br /><br /><strong>The future – Will we go to the salon?</strong><br /><br />As salons open up and pictures of beauticians wearing full gear – PPE kits, face shields, and masks, trend on social media — the question remains, whether people find it safe to venture out.<br /><br />Experts believe that while at-home solutions will continue to reign supreme for another year, it's too short a time to change behaviour. And people will turn to stylists soon. “Making yourself look good is not an easy task. There’s a reason why people have been opting to go to stylists over the years. As soon as aspects of socialization come back, people will go back to salons or ordering services at home. In the near future, consumption will remain low but I don’t see people replacing it,” said Kulashekaran. <br /><br />And when it comes to the sale of beauty products, companies will have to look at an omnichannel strategy as especially with beauty products people would want to try before buying – it’s very experiential. “COVID-19 has accelerated the jump to digital buying by a few years. This kind of push has made people somewhat agnostic to where they are buying their products from. It will be interesting to see how brick and mortar plays into this omnichannel strategy,” said Gandhi in the Goldman Sachs chat. <br /><br /><strong>M&amp;A activities will grow<br /></strong><br />From a business perspective, mergers and acquisitions in the beauty industry too are set to grow. The Goldman Sachs exec said that globally companies are aggressively pursuing opportunities in the space, which will help them modernise their business and become category leaders, technology-driven, or tap into a new market. <br /><br />In India too, deal activity has been seen in the beauty and wellness category. Earlier,the beauty marketplace MyGlamm had acquired the Priyanka Gill-led startup PopXO. It starts with tile, which designers say is the foundation of any great bathroom renovation. </p><p>"Think of tile as your canvas on which to paint," Rutgers says. </p><p>Here are 21 bathroom tile ideas that range from classic to trendy, sourced from four interior designers.</p><h2><strong>Bathroom trends to watch out for in 2022</strong></h2><ul><li><strong>Large-format tiles:</strong> When it comes to tiles, size matters. Designers are loving large tiles or slabs, which reduce grout lines and can give a more streamlined look. </li><li><strong>Wood tiles:</strong> Wood warms up a space, and can give a bathroom a sauna-like feel. You don't even need the real deal — instead go for ceramic or porcelain wood-look tiles.</li><li><strong>Textured tiles:</strong> Textured tiles look great, but they're also functional. They help prevent slips in the bathroom and make the whole family feel safe.</li></ul><h2><strong>1. "The bigger the tile, the better: it's cleaner and crisper," says Stumpo.</p><h2><strong>9. In the last 12 months, CoolSculpting was the 5th most-searched procedure globally, according to <keyword id="11931740" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="plastic-surgery" source="Orion">plastic surgery</keyword> reviews site, RealSelf.com.</p><p>Khloe Kardashian and Kris Jenner are CoolSculpting fans. The actress and model Molly Sims became a spokeswoman after she credited CoolSculpting with <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/style/2015/10/talking-coolsculpting-with-molly-sims">helping her slim down</a> following her pregnancy. </p><p>Since CoolSculpting was cleared by the FDA in 2010, non-invasive body contouring has grown into a $992 million business. Others experience irregular shapes of lumpy deposits of tissue in the treated area or other side effects that they might mistake for gaining weight.</p><div type="image" title="A body is seen from the belly button to the knees. An arrow points to a bulge on the thigh." height="768" width="1024" msid="87856505" hostid="261"></div><p>Insider has interviewed five women who said that they developed PAH after CoolSculpting. Like Evangelista, four of the women had to have multiple corrective procedures, and none felt that the issue was fully fixed. The fifth patient plans to seek additional treatment, but had to delay it due to the pandemic.</p><p>"It felt like an apron of gelatin," said one woman, who Insider is calling Angela." It was very firm and thick and there was a difference in viscosity." </p><p>A spokesperson from Allergan Aesthetics, which <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-zeltiq-m-a-allergan/allergan-to-buy-fat-fighter-zeltiq-aesthetics-for-2-48-billion-idUSKBN15S1G1">purchased Zeltiq in 2017</a>, declined to respond to a detailed list of questions from Insider. AbbVie, the parent company of Allergan Aesthetics, also did not reply to a request for comment. </p><p>The concept of CoolSculpting is that it uses cryolipolysis, or fat freezing, to kill fat cells underneath the skin for a slimmer, more sculpted body in a matter of one to three months. A technician pulls the flesh of the target area between two paddles to cool the tissue to below freezing temperatures. While multiple sessions might be required, the patient can be in and out within an hour. </p><p>According to Paul M. Friedman, MD, a dermatologist and laser surgeon based in Houston and New York whose practice offers CoolSculpting and who has authored papers and case studies on PAH, said PAH "remains a rare adverse event," given the number of treatments overall.</p><p>"Cryolipolysis has a well established safety profile and is an effective noninvasive treatment option for patients who are the right candidate for this treatment," Dr. Friedman said. </p><p>But some patients who've experienced PAH question whether patients are being adequately warned about the seriousness of the risks. </p><p>There have been at least two class-action lawsuits filed in recent years against the companies behind CoolSculpting, and several hundred user accounts regularly share information about the procedure's side effects on Facebook.</p><p>"The biggest problem with the whole situation is the manufacturer is in charge of the reporting," said Louiza Tarrasova, a Florida-based personal injury attorney who has been litigating CoolSculpting claims since 2018. (Tarrasova is on the legal team behind the two class action suits. Two support groups for CoolSculpting patients have formed on Facebook with a total of around 600 members, and Tarrasova serves as the administrator of both.) </p><p>When things go wrong patients simply reach out to their provider, who then reaches out to the manufacturer, Tarrasova said. The manufacturer then might reach a private agreement with the patient that the company will pay for a corrective procedure, like liposuction, and be released from liability, Tarrasova said.  </p><h2><strong>A welcome fix for stubborn fat</strong></h2><p>In Evangelista's case, her dermatologist performed seven cycles of CoolSculpting on her abdomen, flanks, back and bra area, inner thighs, and chin between 2015 and 2016, according to her lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in New York and is unrelated to the class action cases. </p><p>Within a few months of the treatments, her suit alleges, she had developed hard, painful masses underneath her skin in spots where the CoolSculpting applicators were applied, and she was eventually diagnosed with PAH. </p><p>Evangelista says that Zeltiq agreed to pay for corrective liposuction, only to back out of the agreement 24 hours before the scheduled procedure when Evanglista refused to sign a waiver releasing the company from liability. She had the surgery anyway, but said the PAH masses were back within months.</p><p>The same thing happened after her second liposuction procedure, which, she said, also left her with permanent scarring. </p><p>Five patients interviewed by Insider said that Evangelista's story is unfortunately all too familiar. Two were able to provide thorough documentation related to getting the treatment and then corrective procedures for PAH, while three others offered evidence for key pieces of their stories. </p><p>Angela, who asked that Insider conceal her real name but provided surgical notes from her corrective procedures, didn't think much about the small patch of flab on her lower abdomen. It was during a visit to a medical spa for laser hair removal in February 2017 that she said the technician recommended CoolSculpting. </p><p>"I thought it would eliminate the 'extra' in that area," Angela says.</p><p>Five months later, the tissue in the area had expanded, she said in an interview. Curiously, it had also become rubbery and tough, what she described as an "apron of gelatin."</p><div type="image" title="A person's naked belly is seen facing ahead with arrow pointing to above and below the belly button." height="543" width="1086" msid="87856506" hostid="261"></div><p>"I couldn't get on a single dress I owned. I was horrified," she said.  </p><p>That October, Angela found out it was PAH, and was told she needed surgery to correct it. </p><p>When she reached out to the provider who performed her CoolSculpting, she was referred to the manufacturer, Zeltiq. In an interview, Angela said that she spoke to a representative from Zeltiq to say that she believed she had PAH and was offered reimbursement for corrective liposuction surgery.</p><p>She also discussed her case with Tarrasova, the lawyer, but has not joined in any of the lawsuits.</p><p>What concerns Angela more than the lingering physical effects, is the amount of mystery still surrounding PAH. It's unclear why some people develop it, and others don't. It's also not clear what exactly causes it.</p><p>"They make it seem like it's not a big deal, and it's not true," she said. "If it goes wrong, the results are so devastating."</p><h2><strong>'A rare adverse event'</strong></h2><p>When CoolSculpting was first cleared by the FDA in 2010, PAH wasn't on the FDA's radar. That's because among adults, it's a phenomenon that almost exclusively develops as a result of noninvasive body sculpting procedures like cryolipolysis, explains <a href="https://www.instagram.com/drmisbahkhan6/?hl=en">Misbah Khan, MD</a>, a <a href="http://www.misbahkhanmd.com">dermatologic surgeon</a> based in New York. </p><p>The first time PAH related to CoolSculpting was reported in the medical literature more broadly was 2014.</p><p>Much of the existing research on the incidence of PAH is conflicting. In 2018, the manufacturer estimated one PAH case per 4,000 treatment cycles (it's standard for patients to receive more than one cycle of treatment).</p><p>Zeltiq and its parent companies have received at least 7,798 reports of PAH since 2009, court documents say, though it's unclear if a single report represents one patient or just one treatment area and the manufacturer did not respond to questions about this. The company deemed 5,920 of those reports as confirmed and 1,878 as unconfirmed. <br /><br />"It's very hard to get the right number because people are very embarrassed to talk about it. For some patients it may go unnoticed at first. The problems are undiagnosed," said Dr. Khan, who authored a 2019 paper on treating PAH. "What's likely closer to reality is the higher number." </p><p>Louiza Tarrasova, the lawyer, first started digging into CoolSculpting in 2018 after a man approached her about seeking damages related to a PAH diagnosis. Their case was not ultimately not successful – the judge ruled that the CoolSculpting provider had been adequately warned of the risks by the company. They have since filed an appeal. The experience convinced Tarrasova that there could be more to investigate about adverse effects related to CoolSculpting. </p><p>Patients who have been through PAH talk about wanting their bodies to return to normal, but it's not clear whether that's a realistic outcome.  The inflammatory response that they experienced after CoolSculpting can result in fibrous scar tissue that is difficult to remove. </p><div type="image" title="A person's naked belly is seen in profile with arrow pointing to the belly button." height="486" width="973" msid="87856508" hostid="261"></div><p>Moreover, the inflammatory response can be long-lasting, and when you add corrective surgical procedures to the mix, you're adding more trauma and damage to tissues that are already struggling to heal, Dr. Khan said. The tissue may never return to "normal."</p><p>"You're also dealing with an altered metabolism overall," Dr. Khan said, noting that some patients with PAH will experience unexplained weight gain throughout the body as a response to the damaged areas of fat. "Fat is an organ. It stores excess calories. When you have damaged fat, other places in the body will begin to store that excess," Dr. Khan said. "You're dealing with a global response."</p><p>Even when PAH is diagnosed appropriately it is hard to get it treated because it's a relatively new phenomenon. Many doctors and surgeons aren't sure how to treat it effectively. "They're shooting in the dark," Dr. Khan said. This adds another layer of frustration to an extremely painful process of serious surgeries, which themselves can give rise to complications. </p><h2>Damaged fat</h2><p>In her Instagram post, Evangelista <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CUJZa40tWXC/">wrote</a> about the shame of living with what she considered a "disfigured" body and said she had become a recluse. "PAH has not only destroyed my livelihood, it has sent me into a cycle of deep depression, profound sadness, and the lowest depths of self-loathing," she wrote. </p><p>Diana, who also asked Insider to conceal her identity, is an MD dermatologist herself. She got CoolSculpting done four times between 2014 and 2015 on her flanks and abdomen. Her first treatment was done by one of the dermatologist's responsible for bringing CoolSculpting technology to market, she said. Another of her treatments was done at her workplace during training after her boss had bought a CoolSculpting machine. </p><p>She says she has gone through the CoolSculpting training herself, seen the photos of PAH in a lecture from the technology's lead investigator during her residency training, and spoken to company reps directly. It still took nearly two years for her to be diagnosed with PAH, and only after she got more sessions of CoolSculpting done—which was recommended by her provider after it appeared at first not to work. </p><p>"It doesn't always present the way they say it does in the training," Diana said. "In the photos, it looks like a shelf. Mine looked like a bulge." </p><p>She's since had two liposuction procedures as well as an abdominoplasty that led to her losing sensation in her abdomen. The masses in her abdomen feel like they are growing back again, but at this point she can't fathom having another procedure. </p><p>Diana believes many of her colleagues simply misdiagnose PAH as weight gain following the procedure. She said she's on a group chat with a number of dermatologists, who reacted to <keyword id="11893589" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="news" source="Orion">news</keyword> of Linda Evangelista's lawsuit by ridiculing her with comments like "maybe she just started to eat lots of ice cream." </p><p>Danielle, a nurse practitioner in South Carolina who is part of the class action suit in California but requested that she not be identified by her real name for fear of attracting harassment, describes her experience with PAH and the surgeries to correct it as "pure hell." </p><p>After developing PAH in 2019, she had an abdominoplasty and a liposuction procedure in 2020. For both, the recoveries were painful. She got infections in her wounds. The stress of the experience caused a Shingles flare-up. She couldn't care for her family or work for months.</p><p>"Since then it feels like it's coming back," she said. "I don't know what to do anymore. Every day I have spasms in my abdomen. I can't stand up straight half the time." </p><p>"Here I went in for a two hour procedure sold to me as noninvasive, and now I'm scarred from my flank area on one side to the flank area on the other side," she said. "I just want to warn people."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>With the rise of <keyword id="7026286" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sourdough">sourdough</keyword> bread baking during the pandemic, it didn't take long before I started wondering what would happen if I put sourdough starter on my face.</li><li>Sourdough starter has a smooth, pasty consistency and is full of lactobacillus, which can improve skin barriers and reduce inflammation, according to <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Lionel_Breton/publication/47519595_Lactobacillus_paracasei_CNCM_I-2116_ST11_inhibits_substance_P-induced_skin_inflammation_and_accelerates_skin_barrier_function_recovery_in_vitro/links/56b4c5a208ae5ad360575d57/Lactobacillus-paracasei-CNCM-I-2116-ST11-inhibits-substance-P-induced-skin-inflammation-and-accelerates-skin-barrier-function-recovery-in-vitro.pdf">one study</a>.</li><li>I decided to try out my sourdough starter as a <keyword id="72066" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="face-mask">face mask</keyword>.</li><li>A dermatologist and an aesthetician told Insider the starter could have brightening properties and "anti-aging" effects on the skin, but warned it may not be for sensitive skin types.</li><li>I was floored by how refreshed and bright my skin felt after the face mask, and I'll definitely be doing it again.</li></ul><p>It doesn't take much time after a <keyword id="6181" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Food">food</keyword> becomes popular for people to start slathering it on their faces. Case in point: <a href="http://www.beauteous.co.nz/beauty-advice/beauty-tips/4-homemade-avocado-face-mask-recipes/">Avocadoes.</a></p><p>So with the rise of sourdough <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/bread">bread</a> <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/baking">baking</a> during the pandemic, it didn't take long before I started wondering what would happen if I put my sourdough starter on my face.</p><p>If you haven't jumped on the sourdough bandwagon, you may not know that the crusty bread actually begins with a pile of goo, better known as the sourdough starter.</p><p><div type="image" title="IMG_5954" height="900" width="1200" msid="76119514" hostid="261"></div></p><p>It's pretty easy to make a sourdough starter, but it takes about a week. There are variations in recipes, but the basic rule is to combine flour and water each day, and store this in a covered container. By day seven, it should be ready to make bread.</p><p>As the days pass, the flour and water mixture will begin to bubble, foam, and smell suspiciously like strawberry yogurt (or vinegar if your starter is feeling feisty). This is due to the wild yeast in the air being incorporated into the starter, and ultimately is what gives sourdough bread its signature flavoring and airy interior.</p><h2>Throwing my sourdough starter away felt like a waste</h2><p>This was my second time making a sourdough starter and luckily the smell was on the yogurty side. After about two days, my starter began to bubble.</p><p>Each day when you "feed" the starter by adding more flour and water, you also need to discard about half of the original mixture.</p><p>If you're a weirdo like me, or the rest of the world has been generally devoid of most human contact for over two months, you may start developing feelings for your starter.</p><p>For me this meant talking to it, smelling it, and naming it (there are <a href="https://www.thekitchn.com/sourdough-starter-name-ideas-23020468">entire articles</a> about celebrity chefs' punny sourdough starter names – Clint Yeastwood is a fan fave). So to just throw half of it away? That seemed a bit harsh to my starter, Bread Pitt.</p><p><div type="image" title="IMG_5953" height="900" width="1200" msid="76119516" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The internet is full of recipes and suggestions for what to do with sourdough starter discard (crumpets are a popular choice). But faced with the gooey, pasty nature of my starter, I started to think about face masks.</p><p>When I researched the benefits of sourdough starter face masks, all I found was an old Reddit thread.</p><p>A year ago, a Reddit user who goes by "bghjvddghjnn" posted some photos of her starter face mask, and described it as making her "eyes water a little and it felt slightly tingly." After leaving it on her face for 20 minutes she said her skin was pink and soft.</p><p><div type="image" title="reddit screenshot" height="507" width="1200" msid="76119517" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Another user responded: "This is the most unexpected use for discard I've ever seen lol." (To them I say, is it really? You're on Reddit).</p><p>When someone pointed suggested it could make you break out, the original poster claimed that the lactobacillus found in sourdough starter has actually been used to treat many skin conditions.</p><p>Suddenly, this whole face mask thing seemed a bit more legitimate. Could a sourdough starter facial actually be good for my skin?</p><p><div type="image" title="reddit screenshot 2" height="422" width="1200" msid="76119518" hostid="261"></div></p><h2><strong>The science is mixed when it comes to sourdough's skin benefits</strong></h2><p>Perhaps unsurprisingly, nobody has studied the phenomenon of sourdough starter facials. However, there's plenty of research on related topics.</p><p>According to one <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Lionel_Breton/publication/47519595_Lactobacillus_paracasei_CNCM_I-2116_ST11_inhibits_substance_P-induced_skin_inflammation_and_accelerates_skin_barrier_function_recovery_in_vitro/links/56b4c5a208ae5ad360575d57/Lactobacillus-paracasei-CNCM-I-2116-ST11-inhibits-substance-P-induced-skin-inflammation-and-accelerates-skin-barrier-function-recovery-in-vitro.pdf">study</a>, consuming lactobacillus improved skin barriers and reduced inflammation.</p><p>Researchers on another <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3273010/">study</a> found that the fermentation in a sourdough starter produces antioxidants, which are widely believed to be good for your skin health.</p><p>Still, none of this provided the pros (or cons) to putting sourdough starter on my skin's surface.</p><p><div type="image" title="IMG_5957" height="900" width="1200" msid="76119519" hostid="261"></div></p><p>I turned to the experts before fully committing to the sourdough starter face mask experiment.</p><p>Dr. Keira Barr, a board certified dermatologist, best-selling author, and founder of <a href="https://www.chooseresilience.com/">The Resilient Health Institute,</a> told Insider: "There is mounting evidence highlighting beneficial effects of probiotics for skin health, and sourdough starter contains a high level of probiotics."</p><p>According to Barr, sourdough starter's high content of lactobacillus in particular could help minimize wrinkles, pigmentation, and cellular damage from UVB.</p><p>"[The] bacteria shut down production of genes responsible for these 'aging effects,'" she said.</p><p>Celia O'Grady, an aesthetician and founder of <a href="https://www.nianaturalbeauty.com/">Nia Natural Beauty</a> skin care, said agreed that the lactic acid (produced by lactobacillus) could have brightening and peeling effects, which could speed up cellular renewal.</p><p><div type="image" title="IMG_5775" height="1600" width="1200" msid="76119522" hostid="261"></div></p><p>However, Barr and O'Grady were both hesitant when it came to the specifics.</p><p>"It would be hard to recommend how long to leave it on and how often to use as it wouldn't be for everyone's skin type," O'Grady warned.</p><p>She also mentioned a sourdough starter facial would be more suitable for mature skin types with "absolutely no sensitivity."</p><h2><strong>I refrigerated the starter overnight before applying the mask</strong></h2><p>I decided to go for it.</p><p>Before I applied the face mask, I refrigerated my sourdough starter discard overnight, partly because I thought the cooler temperature would feel good on my skin, even if nothing else happened.</p><p>However, I also refrigerated my starter because colder temperatures slow the action of the yeast. I have sensitive skin, and felt a bit wary based on O'Grady's warning. Maybe if the yeast was less active, the face mask would be less likely to irritate my skin.</p><p><div type="image" title="IMG_5801" height="900" width="1200" msid="76119527" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Maybe this was just procrastination, but I also decided to wash my face thoroughly before doing the face mask.</p><p>I didn't want the sourdough starter's yeast to negatively interact with any sweat or bacteria already on my face, so I decided to give it a clean slate to work with.</p><h2><strong>I've had breakouts since the start of lockdown</strong></h2><p>I've had some bad breakouts and hyperpigmentation around my chin since the start of lockdown. I'm pretty sure it's due to eating ice cream, because I know dairy and sugar affect my skin. But I wasn't about to <em>not </em>eat ice cream during a pandemic.</p><p>Overall, my skin hasn't been feeling great. I knew I could do with some of the exfoliation and brightening that Barr and O'Grady mentioned, so I was actually looking forward to trying the face mask.</p><p>Here's my face before applying the sourdough face mask:</p><p><div type="image" title="IMG_5860" height="1600" width="1200" msid="76119529" hostid="261"></div></p><h2>The best way to apply it is with your hands</h2><p>I started applying the starter to my face with a spoon, but it soon became apparent that wouldn't work with the gloppy consistency of the starter, so I resorted to using my hands.</p><p><div type="image" title="IMG_5875" height="1600" width="1200" msid="76119530" hostid="261"></div></p><p>My first impression was how cold the starter was  — it felt great on my skin.</p><p>I was also a little worried that my starter would just drip off my face as soon as I applied it, but luckily this wasn't the case.</p><p>My starter was a bit thicker than the average starter, due to it being refrigerated overnight. I think this helped it stay put.</p><p><div type="image" title="IMG_5879" height="1600" width="1200" msid="76119531" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Using my fingers, I spread the sourdough starter over my entire face, but avoided my lips and eye area.</p><p>I tried to get an even spread, but Bread Pitt wasn't having it.</p><p><div type="image" title="IMG_5902" height="1600" width="1200" msid="76119534" hostid="261"></div></p><p>I only meant to leave the face mask on for five minutes, due to my skin's sensitivity, but I didn't set a timer, so ended up leaving it on for 10.</p><p>Like anyone with a face mask on, I also got distracted on Snapchat.</p><p><div type="image" title="IMG_5893" height="2384" width="1200" msid="76119589" hostid="261"></div></p><h2><strong>It smelled like overripe fruit, but it wasn't totally unpleasant</strong></h2><p>The second thing I noticed while wearing the face mask was the smell. My whole face smelled yogurty, yeasty, and a little bit like overripe fruit. I'm sure this was amplified by the fact I had a clump of sourdough starter right below my nostrils.</p><p>Overall, the smell was weird, but it wasn't completely unpleasant — maybe not the kind of scent a spa would want to package on their face masks, but not bad enough that I wanted to wash it off immediately.</p><p>After about four minutes wearing the face mask, I noticed it had cooled off significantly, and my face started feeling tingly — just like the Reddit girl said it would.</p><p>I also noticed, near eight minutes, that the face mask was solidifying a bit. As it dried, the starter congealed where I'd spread it thickest.</p><p>This actually felt nice. In thinner spots, it started getting crusty, which wasn't so nice.</p><p><div type="image" title="IMG_5895" height="1600" width="1200" msid="76119591" hostid="261"></div></p><h2><strong>I was floored by how much better my skin felt after — and I'll definitely do it again</strong></h2><p>I decided to take the face mask off with a warm, wet wash cloth over my sink. I put on a headband because it soon got pretty messy, with sourdough ending up in my hair.</p><p>I gently wiped Bread Pitt off my face. After a couple swipes, I noticed my skin start to tingle even more, in a really refreshing way.</p><p><div type="image" title="IMG_5908" height="900" width="1200" msid="76119593" hostid="261"></div></p><p>After taking off the face mask, my skin felt super fresh and I even think it looked brighter, too.</p><p>Obviously one face mask wasn't going to fix my breakouts, but I think some redness reduced and it definitely felt less irritated.</p><p>I was floored by how much better my skin felt.
