<ul class="summary-list"><li>A British commando fell through the roof of a home in California in July after a <keyword id="6675912" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="parachute">parachute</keyword> malfunction.</li><li>The paratrooper survived, but it illustrates one of the risks of special-operations forces' trickiest insertion methods.</li></ul><p>A recent special-operations exercise in California in early July revealed one of the dangers of military free-fall operations.</p><p>During the exercise, a British commando's primary parachute failed to deploy properly. The operator deployed his reserve parachute, but it didn't have enough time to inflate properly, leaving him to fall 15,000 feet.</p><p>The malfunction meant he <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/british-paratrooper-fell-through-the-roof-of-california-home-2021-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fell straight through the roof of a civilian house</a>, landing in the kitchen. Surprisingly, the British commando wasn't seriously hurt, only suffering minor injuries, according to local law enforcement.</p><p>For personal security purposes, the British Ministry of Defense didn't release the name or the unit of the lucky parachutist.</p><p>However, only a select few British special-operations units receive military free-fall training. So it's safe to assume that the commando is a member of the Special Air Service (SAS), Special Boat Service (SBS), the Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR), the Special Forces Support Group (SFSG), or the Pathfinders.</p><p>Many more US military units receive free-fall training, including the Army's Delta Force and Ranger Reconnaissance Company and the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (formerly known as SEAL Team 6), as well as select Army Green Beret teams and Air Commandos.</p><p>Free fall is a great insertion method for special-operations units. When done by well-trained commandos, and when everything goes right, it's stealthy and accurate.</p><h2>Not all parachuting is the same</h2><div type="image" title="Army paratrooper Aviano Italy" height="933" width="1400" msid="84859605" hostid="261"></div><p>Static-line and free-fall are the military's two parachuting methods.</p><p>Static-line parachute training is a staple of every special-operations pipeline in the US military, with a lot of support troops going through it too. Free-fall training is generally reserved for select individuals or teams.</p><p>However, some units, such as the Navy SEAL teams and Army Green Berets, have incorporated free fall into their pipelines in order to be more competitive and relevant in future contingencies.</p><p>The more common static-line method is what you imagine when you hear about <keyword id="1976490" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="paratroopers">paratroopers</keyword>. It's what the <keyword id="866484" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="82nd-Airborne-Division">82nd Airborne Division</keyword> uses and has historically been the preferred method for large-scale drops. This is how American and British paratroopers jumped into France on D-Day in 1944 and how the Rangers jumped in Grenada in 1983.</p><div type="image" title="Army 82nd Airborne paratroopers" height="1329" width="2000" msid="84859607" hostid="261"></div><p>During static-line jumps, the parachute's rip cord is connected to the aircraft. Once a paratrooper exits the aircraft, the cord is pulled, and the parachute deploys. If there's a malfunction or the parachute gets tangled, the paratrooper has a reserve chute.</p><p>Static-line jumps occur in low altitudes, between 500 feet and 1,500 feet, giving paratroopers little time to fix malfunctions.</p><p>There have been jumps from ever lower altitudes.</p><p>The Rhodesian Light Infantry, a now deactivated special-operations unit similar to the US Army's 75th Ranger Regiment, used to jump at around 200 feet - so low that the troopers didn't pack a reserve parachute as there would be no time to deploy it. (A soldier from the unit also holds the world record for the most static-line combat jumps with an astounding 73.)</p><p>Static-line is certainly the easier method as it requires almost no skill. The hardest part is the landing, which, if not done properly, can cause broken ankles, dislocated knees, or worse.</p><h2>Free fall: masters of the air</h2><div type="image" title="Military free fall parachute paratrooper" height="1513" width="2000" msid="84859608" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/seal-team-6-parachute-skills-distinct-among-special-operations-units-2020-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Free-fall parachuting</a> is the military equivalent of skydiving but with a major twist. It requires hundreds of hours of training in the classroom, on the ground, and in the air.</p><p>Whereas skydiving requires little skill and only a parachute, in free fall a commando carries tens if not hundreds of pounds of gear, a burden that can be lethal on an untrained person. Commandos also often jump at night and in adverse weather conditions.</p><p>"MFF ops are hard to master. It takes a lot of training to be able to fly [just] you and your equipment effectively and safely," John Black, a retired Special Forces warrant officer, told Insider.</p><p>"Now you add a team of individuals, and it becomes much more difficult. A lot of training goes into getting a team efficient to not only jump together but also to land safely in the same spot," added Black, who was qualified for free-fall jumps.</p><p>Army Special Forces spent "tons of hours in the wind tunnel, dozens of jumps, and endless rehearsals go into any training<em>. </em>The smallest mistake can cause a much larger issue," Black said.</p><p>There are two free-fall categories - High Altitude High Opening (HAHO) and High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) - each tailored to different operational needs.</p><div type="image" title="Special Warfare Combatant-craft crew free fall parachute jump" height="1429" width="2000" msid="84859611" hostid="261"></div><p>During a <keyword id="11749084" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="haho-jump">HAHO jump</keyword>, a special operator would deploy his parachute soon after exiting the aircraft at somewhere between 30,000 to 25,000 feet and then glide to the target. Training and specialized equipment would allow him to traverse anywhere from 20 to 40 miles while in the air, making HAHO great for clandestine insertions, even across borders, as the aircraft can stay away from the target area and thus not alert the opposition.</p><p>Things are a little different during a <keyword id="6591912" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="HALO-jump">HALO jump</keyword>. A commando would exit the aircraft, free fall, and then deploy his parachute close to the ground. Although HALO jumps don't allow for traveling great distances, they are ideal for large team insertions as it's easier for the operators to group up in the air and then land close together.</p><p>Delta Force, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/seal-team-6-parachute-skills-distinct-among-special-operations-units-2020-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DEVGRU</a>, and the Ranger Reconnaissance Company are known within the US special-operations community for their superb free-fall capabilities. Some of their operators have thousands of jumps.</p><p>The majority of special-operators attend the US Army's John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center's <keyword id="11749083" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="military-free-fall">Military Free Fall</keyword> School in Yuma, Arizona, for free-fall training.</p><p>But as the recent incident with the British commando showed, free-fall operations are packed with danger. There have been about 20 US military deaths during static-line and free-fall training jumps over the last 15 years.</p><p>"Jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft is inherently a dangerous operation. US special operators have mastered a tricky infiltration method, but there's still a chance they could come crashing through your roof

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Several US troops, including Navy SEALs, have died in parachuting accidents over the past decade.</li></ul><p>Several members of elite US military units have died in parachute accidents over the past decade, including a Navy SEAL and a member of the Army's parachute demonstration team who were killed in incidents this year.</p><p>While deaths in US military parachute operations are relatively rare, the fatalities highlight the inherent danger of what has become the go-to method for putting special operators and other US troops into the field for important missions.</p><h2>Deadly accidents</h2><div type="image" title="Navy SEAL Naval Special Warfare parachute" height="1331" width="2000" msid="99101641" hostid="261" sizebytes="20600"></div><p>On February 19, Chief Special Warfare Operator Michael Ernst, a member of a <a href="https://www.19fortyfive.com/2022/12/the-u-s-navy-seals-seem-unstoppable-for-a-reason/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Navy SEAL</a> team assigned to the East Coast, <a href="https://news.usni.org/2023/02/22/parachuting-accident-claims-life-of-navy-seal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was killed</a> during a free-fall parachute training jump in Arizona.</p><p>The incident, which likely happened during as part of a pre-deployment workup, is still under investigation, according to Naval Special Warfare Command. The command's leader, Rear. Adm. Keith Davids, called Ernst "an exceptional teammate" who worked on some of the US's "hardest challenges" while "selflessly mentoring" fellow SEALs.</p><p>Ernst's death is the first fatal parachute accident in the Naval Special Warfare community since May 2017, but in the preceding four years, <a href="https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2017/05/31/fatal-seal-skydiving-accident-is-the-fifth-in-four-years-for-the-elite-unit/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">five</a> active-duty SEALs died during training jumps.</p><p>Ernst's death is not the only deadly parachute mishap this year. On March 13, US Army Sgt. 1st Class Michael Ty Kettenhofen died after being injured in a "<a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/michael-ty-kettenhofen-dies-army-parachutist-training-jump-florida/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hard landing</a>" during a training jump in Florida.</p><p>Kettenhofen was a member of the Golden Knights, the Army's elite parachute demonstration team, and had done more than 1,000 parachute jumps with the Army. The service has said the incident is under investigation.</p><p>"Ty will be honored and remembered as a Golden Knight, soldier, and friend," the commander of the Golden Knights <a href="https://recruiting.army.mil/News/Article/3329314/golden-knights-team-member-dies-after-training-accident/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement.</p><h2>Dangerous but valuable</h2><div type="image" title="Navy SEAL HALO parachute jump Alaska Arctic" height="1333" width="2000" msid="99101644" hostid="261" sizebytes="146322"></div><p>The deaths and other <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/navy-seal-william-mcraven-almost-snapped-half-in-parachute-accident-2022-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">military parachuting incidents</a>, including a British special-operations parachutist <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/special-operations-accident-shows-military-free-fall-parachute-risks-2021-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">falling through the roof</a> of a California home in 2021, illustrate the risks inherent in military free-fall parachuting.</p><p>Despite that danger, however, free-fall parachuting is also extremely valuable as an insertion method for special-operations units.</p><p>Unlike static-line parachuting, in which parachute deployment is triggered by a line attached to the aircraft that the parachutist jumped from, personnel conducting free-fall jumps have to pull their rip cords to deploy their parachutes after jumping from the plane.</p><p>There are two versions of free-fall parachuting — high-altitude low opening, or HALO, and high-altitude high opening, known as HAHO — which are designed for different scenarios.</p><p>During HALO jumps, commandos jump from an aircraft, free fall, and deploy their parachutes close to the ground. Doing so is meant to increase their chances of reaching the ground in an orderly fashion and without detection.</p><p>During HAHO jumps, operators deploy their parachutes soon after exiting the aircraft and glide to the target, which can be up to 40 miles away. HAHO jumps allow the aircraft to stay far from the target, decreasing the likelihood it will be detected.</p><p>For both kinds of jumps, the commandos typically exit the aircraft at an altitude of about 25,000 to 30,000 feet.</p><div type="image" title="Air Force parachute" height="1331" width="2000" msid="99101646" hostid="261" sizebytes="123080"></div><p>Free-fall parachuting "gets us where we want to be without presenting a large signature to an adversary," a former Navy SEAL officer told Insider.</p><p>Free-fall jumps can be used to put commandos on the ground for a variety of missions, including counterterrorism, special reconnaissance, and hostage rescue. Compared to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/army-green-berets-show-ground-mobility-vehicles-in-offroad-race-2022-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">other insertion methods</a> used by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-special-operators-still-use-vietnam-war-era-infilexfil-method-2021-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">US special operators</a>, parachute jumps lower the operators' chances of being detected as they approach the target.</p><p>Free-fall parachuting "is an important skill set and has become mandatory for a unit to be considered competitive even within" the US special-operations community, and it "offers decision-makers more options," according to the SEAL officer, who was granted anonymity because of their current work with the government.</p><p>The Navy SEAL community — especially <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/seal-team-6-parachute-skills-distinct-among-special-operations-units-2020-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Naval Special Warfare Development Group</a>, formerly known as SEAL Team 6 — is well-versed in free-fall operations. Indeed, SEALs with DEVGRU, as the Development Group is known, have used free-fall jumps in at least two recent hostage-rescue operations.</p><p>In 2012, they parachuted into Somalia and rescued US citizen Jessica Buchanan and Danish citizen Poul Hagen Thisted, who were being held by pirates. In 2020, SEALs conducting a free-fall jump during a mission to rescue Philipe Nathan Walton, a US citizen being held in Nigeria.</p><p>Most US special-operations units have recognized the value of free-fall parachuting and have incorporated it into their training. Another SEAL parachuting death highlights the inherent danger of US special operators' go-to infiltration method

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The US military is preparing for a future where its ability to resupply troops is challenged.</li><li>The effort reflects expectations that potential foes, mainly China, can attack US supply lines.</li></ul><p>The war in Ukraine has offered the US military a glimpse of how large-scale conventional conflicts will be fought in the 21st century.</p><p>To be sure, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-force-considering-plan-to-reduce-number-of-tacp-airmen-2023-6" target="_top">the US military</a> has vastly better capabilities than either the Ukrainian and Russian militaries, but fierce fighting in Ukraine has shown <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/some-of-most-important-weapons-in-ukraine-arent-new-fancy-2022-9" target="_top">the value of old technology</a> and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fighter-jets-unable-to-provide-close-air-support-over-ukraine-2023-3" target="_top">limits of new hardware</a>.</p><p>The war in Ukraine has only accelerated the US military's adjustments to the challenges it expects to face in future wars. For US special operators, who may have to operate far from friendly forces in those wars, one new effort is the use of a low-tech kind of aircraft to overcome high-tech threats.</p><h2>A special-operations glider</h2><div type="image" title="Army special operations GD-2000 glider C-27J" height="767" width="1023" msid="101219342" hostid="261" sizebytes="79272"></div><p>In February, a US Army Special Forces team tested a prototype aircraft that could ease the logistical challenges faced by special-operations units in contested areas.</p><p>The Glider Disposable 2000 is an unmanned aerial delivery platform designed to resupply special-operations forces on the ground. The GD-2000 can carry up to 1,500 pounds of gear and fly for more than 15 minutes, depending on the operational environment, according to the firm behind the aircraft, Yates Electrospace.</p><p>The tests included air-dropping a GD-2000 with a 1,000-pound payload from a C-27J cargo plane over the Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona. On several of the airdrops, the glider landed within about 100 feet of its intended landing spot, which is fairly accurate for what is essentially a gliding trunk. Equally importantly, the glider's hull remained intact and its cargo undamaged.</p><div type="image" title="GD-2000 glider released from C-27J cargo plane" height="924" width="1233" msid="101219343" hostid="261" sizebytes="197602"></div><p>If the glider can be launched from an altitude of 40,000 feet, it can travel distances "in excess of 25 to 30 miles," the Special Forces detachment commander whose team tested the glider said in a <a href="https://www.dvidshub.net/news/441506/1st-special-forces-group-airborne-tests-new-prototype-glider" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a>. "That's a pretty unique capability and not matched by anything we currently have."</p><p>That long glide distance is equal to what special operators can cover during a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/seal-team-6-parachute-skills-distinct-among-special-operations-units-2020-11" target="_top">High Altitude, High Opening</a> free-fall jump. By jumping from that altitude, and with the aid of oxygen masks, the operators can glide to their target unseen by enemy radar.</p><p>Troops conducting HAHO jumps are normally restricted to the gear in their individual loadout, which is usually a few days' worth of food and ammunition. A glider that can carry 1,500 pounds of equipment over similar distances could greatly increase the firepower that special operators have on clandestine operations, allowing them to bring heavy weapons, unmanned ground vehicles, bikes, or more supplies.</p><p>The glider "gives us the ability to drop this from a plane outside of controlled airspace into international air space and fly resupply in from an unmanned autonomous craft. It's a huge enhancement to the mission," the <a href="https://www.19fortyfive.com/2023/04/green-beret-70-years-of-greatness/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Green Beret</a> officer, who was not identified, said in the release.</p><h2>Contested logistics</h2><div type="image" title="CH-147 helicopter sling-load supplies Afghanistan" height="1333" width="2000" msid="101219345" hostid="261" sizebytes="416854"></div><p>During the conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, the US military's resupply operations have been largely uncontested. US and allied forces in those conflicts have often enjoyed complete air superiority, allowing planes and helicopters to conduct close-air-support and resupply missions as they pleased.</p><p>The war in Ukraine has shown that resupplying ground units in active combat or in close proximity to enemy forces isn't easy. Aerial resupply isn't an option because of the prevalence of anti-aircraft systems, and ground resupply is complicated — more for the Russians than the Ukrainians — because opposing forces typically have accurate long-range artillery and rockets.</p><p>That dynamic is a preview of what the US would face in a conflict with a capable adversary such as China or even Russia, which can still bring an array of anti-aircraft weaponry to bear.</p><p><a href="https://www.army.mil/article/265428/army_focuses_on_contested_logistics_a_threat_to_enemy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Contested logistics</a> has thus become a central focus for US war planners, because despite potent airpower, even the US military will have trouble resupplying its forces in a war with its main adversaries.</p><p><em>Stavros Atlamazoglou is a defense journalist specializing in special operations, a Hellenic Army veteran (national service with the 575th Marine Battalion and Army HQ), and a Johns Hopkins University graduate. US special operators are tinkering with a low-tech kind of aircraft to overcome high-tech threats in future wars

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In the early-morning hours of October 31, members of <keyword id="1608019" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Seal-team-6">SEAL Team 6</keyword> descended on a site in northern Nigeria to rescue an American held hostage there.</li><li>Navy SEAL Team 6 and the Army's <keyword id="621779" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Delta-Force">Delta Force</keyword> are the main special-operations units for hostage-rescue missions, but the SEALs have a specific tactic that sets them apart.</li></ul><p>Early on Saturday, October 31, commandos from SEAL Team 6 <a href="https://www.insider.com/us-citizen-taken-hostage-nigeria-rescued-by-us-forces-officials-2020-10" target="_top">rescued an American hostage</a> who had been abducted by criminals in northern Nigeria.</p><p>The SEAL operators conducted a free-fall <keyword id="6675912" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="parachute">parachute</keyword> jump close to the target and then silently approached where the kidnappers were holding Philipe Nathan Walton. All but one of the kidnappers were killed in the ensuing firefight, and Walton was freed.</p><p>Despite the huge logistical difficulties behind the operation, it was just another day at the office for the SEALs.</p><h2>The cream of the SEAL crop</h2><div type="image" title="Navy SEAL Team Six Afghanistan" height="1809" width="2500" msid="79028375" hostid="261"></div><p>Composed of four assault squadrons (Red, Blue, Gold, Silver), SEAL Team 6 is the Tier 1 unit of <a href="https://www.sandboxx.us/blog/back-to-the-basics-seal-teams-invest-in-underwater-operations/" target="_top">Naval Special Warfare</a> and part of the secretive Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). It specializes in counterterrorism, <keyword id="898757" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hostage-Rescue">hostage rescue</keyword>, counter-proliferation, direct action, special reconnaissance, advance force operations, and maritime special operations.</p><p>Unlike its Army counterpart, Delta Force, SEAL Team 6 recruits solely from within Naval Special Warfare. That means only SEALs and Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewmen (SWCC) can become assaulters.</p><p>Potential assaulters first have to go through a review board before starting the selection process. Known as Green Team, the selection process places extreme emphasis on close-quarters battle and free-fall parachuting. Despite starting with top-notch candidates, Green Team's attrition rate is still significant, ranging from 40% to 50%.</p><p>Like Delta Force, SEAL Team 6 has augmentees who haven't passed Green Team as well as support personnel and enablers attached to the unit. They include cryptologic technicians, explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technicians, and military working dog handlers.</p><h2>Masters of military free-fall</h2><div type="image" title="navy seal" height="1500" width="2100" msid="79028376" hostid="261"></div><p>SEAL Team 6 is renowned in special-operations circles for its military free-fall capabilities. Standard military parachuting, better known as static-line, requires little skill — just jump out of the aircraft door and the parachute should deploy.</p><p>Military free-fall parachuting, however, is a different beast. Divided into two categories — High Altitude High Opening (HAHO) and High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) — it requires lots of training and practice to master.</p><p>In a HAHO jump, commandos deploy their parachutes soon after exiting the aircraft at 25,000 to 30,000 feet and glide 20 miles to 40 miles to their target. This is a great option when you want to hide the presence of the aircraft, since it doesn't have to fly too close to the target. It's also a good option for cross-border operations.</p><p>A trooper will deploy the parachute at different altitudes depending on the jump. In a HALO jump, the commandos would jump from the aircraft at altitude similar to or lower than HAHO jumps, free fall, and then deploy their parachutes close to the ground, ensuring a stealthy and orderly insertion.</p><p>Nowadays, most US special-operations troops go through free-fall training, but SEAL Team 6 has taken the skill set to another level.</p><p>During <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Relentless-Strike-History-Special-Operations/dp/1250105471" target="_top">the hunt for Osama bin Laden</a>, SEAL Team 6 always had an assault troop (about 20 operators) on standby to conduct a HAHO jump into Pakistan to kill or capture the Al Qaeda leader. The plan was for the assaulters to jump from Afghan air space and glide to the target in neighboring Pakistan.</p><p>In the end, it took a standard helicopter assault to kill Bin Laden, but SEAL Team 6 operators used their HAHO capabilities in Afghanistan on other occasions.</p><p>In 2005, the designated HAHO troop for the Bin Laden mission (at the time it was a Red Squadron troop) jumped in Afghanistan and captured several mid-level Al Qaeda terrorists.</p><p>A few months later, the designated HAHO troop (from Blue Squadron this time) jumped in to rescue <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/04/world/asia/taliban-killed-an-engineer-abducted-in-afghanistan-britain-says.html" target="_top">David Addison</a>, a British security contractor abducted by the Taliban. But they were too late, as the Taliban had already killed the hostage.</p><p>When it comes to counterterrorism and hostage-rescue operations, Delta Force and SEAL Team 6 are almost equal — the SEALs have an edge when it comes to maritime operations — and both have taken <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/weapons-gear-used-by-us-military-special-operations-delta-seals-2020-10" target="_top">close quarters combat (CQB)</a> to the next level.</p><h2>Best of the best, but not infallible</h2><div type="image" title="Navy SEAL Team Six 6 Afghanistan" height="1671" width="2500" msid="79028381" hostid="261"></div><p>Early in the Global War on Terror (GWOT), JSOC divided the workload between its two direct-action Special Mission Units to ensure sustainability and effectiveness, assigning each an area of operations. Delta Force got Iraq, and SEAL Team 6 got Afghanistan.</p><p>This meant that Delta Force had the lead in the JSOC operations against the Iraqi insurgency, while SEAL Team 6 focused on the Taliban and Al Qaeda.
