Snapdeal saw a wave of orders as lockdown eased but the e-commerce platform will have to wait for it to be business as usual again. 75% of the orders for non-essentials came from green and orange zones. “On day one of Lockdown 3.0, we delivered the packets across India from Dehradun to Thiruvananthapuram and from Jamnagar to Jorhat. The day was also met with tremendous enthusiasm and readiness by our sellers who today shipped steel utensils from Salem, footwear from Amritsar and apparel from Gurugram. On Day 1 of the expanded operations, orders have touched 50% of pre-Covid BAU and we expect steady growth as more sellers come online and more areas become serviceable," said a Snapdeal spokesperson. The company saw home products and apparels being the top choice of consumers with people ordering grooming products, kitchen utensils and appliances, footwear and more. The platform also saw a trend where consumers were buying 3 &amp; 5-packs of t-Shirts or buying undergarments in multi-packs. Snapdeal said that its tech team is working extensively to process the marking of green, orange and red zone products on the platform basis the pin codes. “For instance, while users across the country will be able to see the entire assortment, users in red zones will not be able to order a non-essential product, while a user in an orange or a green zone will be able to. To illustrate, today a buyer in Gurugram can order a T-Shirt, but a buyer in Delhi cannot. As soon as the user adds or updates her pin code, the availability of products and / or the timelines for delivery get updated accordingly,” said a Snapdeal spokesperson. New Delhi, May 4 () From laptops to apparels, people logged on to e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Paytm Mall and Snapdeal on Monday to place orders for non-essential items but lack of adequate manpower amid the lockdown could delay deliveries, according to industry executives. E-commerce companies have been permitted to sell all items in Orange and Green Zones starting from Monday, the first day of the third phase of the nationwide lockdown that began on March 25. Depending on the number of cases of coronavirus infections, areas have been divided into Red, Orange and Green Zones. In the Red Zones, which include Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad, the companies can ship only essential items like grocery, medicines and healthcare products. However, shortage of staff at warehouses and for logistics could result in delays in deliveries of items, as per the executives. An Amazon India spokesperson said the company saw demand for various kinds of smart devices, products related to electrical appliances, clothes and work from home enablers, among others. "Our consumers in Orange/ Green zones are buying other priority products that they needed the most. Thousands of sellers have received orders for the first time since the lockdown began in March and we are hopeful that this will help jumpstart the livelihood of many small sellers and their workforce," the spokesperson said. The company reiterated its demand that the list of priority products be expanded for customers in the Red Zone as well in order to revive economic activity while serving urgent needs and ensuring citizen safety in a high-risk area. Under the first and second phase of the nationwide lockdown between March 25 and May 3, the government only allowed delivery of essential goods, including grocery, pharmaceuticals and healthcare products, through e-commerce platforms. A Snapdeal spokesperson said the company expects 80-90 per cent of its sellers in the Orange and Green Zones to become active over the course of this week. On an average, deliveries are being promised within 6-10 days and actual deliveries are likely to be completed in lesser number of days, the spokesperson added. "Thousands of our sellers received orders for non-essential products on Day 1... we have started picking up orders from sellers in Salem, Amritsar, Gurugram and Guwahati, amongst many other locations. "Some of the products supplied by our sellers today include steel utensils, apparel, footwear, notebooks and pens, and electronics like power banks, phone and laptop chargers," the spokesperson said. Paytm Mall Vice President Srinivas Mothey said consumer electronics, laptops, mobile phones, home, and fashion products are among the few categories that are doing extremely well on its platform. E-commerce companies could look at sharing delivery resources from other digital business like online food delivery to shorten delays, the executive noted. A senior industry executive said that apart from the guidelines issued by the Centre, there are rules specified by states and even districts. Given that the classification of Red, Orange and Green Zones is in a dynamic state, it could make operations difficult for online commerce platforms, the executive said. The classification of zone changes depending on the number of coronavirus cases in a particular area. Also, standalone retail shops -- irrespective of whether they sell essential or non-essential items -- have been allowed to operate in Red Zones while e-commerce platforms are not allowed to ship non-essential items to such areas. There is no level-playing field between the two modes, the executive quoted above said. Another challenge for e-commerce companies that follow the marketplace model like Amazon India, Flipkart and Snapdeal is that many of their sellers are either located or have their warehouses in Red Zones. New Delhi, May 18 () Uber on Monday said it is introducing a set of measures, including mandatory usage of face masks for both driver and rider in India during a ride, as part of its efforts to ensure safety amid COVID-19 pandemic.Under the fourth phase of lockdown starting Monday, states and union territories have been given the power decide on the containment, buffer, red, orange and green zones, after taking into consideration the parameters shared by the health ministry. Depending on the states' decision, ride-hailing platforms like Uber and Ola will resume services in various locations and follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs)."Starting today, drivers and riders will have to wear face masks if they are using Uber in India and in most other countries where Uber operates," Uber Global Senior Director Product Management Sachin Kansal told reporters.He added that this is part of COVID-19 specific safety features and policies being introduced to ensure safety of drivers and riders."Over the last two months, our global tech and safety product teams have been hard at work building a new, product experience for riders and drivers. Today, as India eases its lockdown, it's important we take all necessary precautions to help keep ourselves safe and to make the next trip safer for all," Kansal said. These new features and policies have been rolled out globally, and will be enhanced and revised as needed to ensure a safer experience for all, he added.Before they go online on the platform, driver-partners will be asked to confirm - via a new Go Online Checklist - that they've taken certain safety measures and are wearing a face mask. They will also have to upload a selfie wearing a face mask, and Uber's new technology will verify the identity of the driver.A similar checklist has been built for riders and before every trip, the rider will have to confirm that they've taken precautions like wearing a face mask, and washing or sanitising their hands. Kansal said new options for feedback have also been added for both rider and driver to inform the company if the other party was not wearing a mask or face cover.He added that the cancellation policy have also been updated to allow drivers and riders to cancel trips if they don't feel safe, including if a user is not wearing a mask or face cover. To allow for space between the driver and rider during a ride, Uber is advising riders not to sit in the front seat, and only two riders will be allowed in the rear seat of the car.The company said it is working with global and local public health authorities, and has compiled safety tips and recommendations that will be sent to all riders and drivers. Both Uber and Ola had suspended operations after the government announced a nationwide lockdown from March 25 to contain the spread of COVID-19. After 40 days of lockdown, some relaxations were provided in the third phase of the lockdown from May 4, including allowing cab services to operate with conditions in locations that have very few or no confirmed cases reported (orange and green zones).Uber had announced starting operations in 25 cities including Jamshedpur, Kochi, Cuttack and Guwahati (green zone) as well as locations like Amritsar, Rohtak, Gurugram and Visakhapatnam (orange zone) in the third phase of the lockdown. It has not yet announced the additional cities, where it will resume operations.The Home Affairs Ministry, on Sunday, said inter-state movement of passenger vehicles and buses with mutual consent of the states and union territories involved would be permitted with restrictions (except in containment zones). It also allowed intra-state movement of passenger vehicles and buses, as decided by the states and union territories. Chandigarh, Apr 18 () Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Saturday said COVID-19 graph trajectory will decide the nature of lockdown-2 in the state. He made the remark in a tweet, saying that "economic activities will begin in Green zones after April 20, but no activity will be allowed in Red zones and containment areas till 14 days from the last reported case". "COVID19 graph trajectory will decide the fate of Lockdown 2.0 in the State," he added, in a series of tweets on the Covid situation in the state. Khattar also said the Haryana government will be in a state of heightened preparedness till Diwali festival this year to tackle relapse of cases. "We cannot let our efforts go in vain because other countries have reported relapse of the virus in patients. Isolation and quarantine wards will continue till Covid-19 is wiped out," he said in another tweet. Notably, coronavirus cases rose to 227 in Haryana that includes 24 foreigners. The state has so far recorded two Covid-related deaths. The worst affected districts of the state with maximum number of positive cases are Nuh (57), Faridabad (33), Gurugram (32) and Palwal (32). Panchkula district has reported 17 coronavirus cases. A few days ago, Chief Minister Khattar had said Haryana fears losing a whopping Rs 4,600 crore revenue in April due to the ongoing coronavirus-triggered lockdown, which has brought all economic activities in the state to a grinding halt. Kosh Muloo Dand , said Khattar, citing the crucial economic mantra mentioned in Kautiliyan Arthshastra, which implies "the treasury is the backbone of administration", and pointed to the revenue losses that the state has been facing due to the lockdown. Haryana's Home Minister Anil Vij on Saturday said from April 20 onwards industry in the rural areas and industrial estates in urban pockets can start functioning again with certain conditions. Vij, however, made it clear that industries like Panipat textile industry which falls in city areas or scientific instruments making industry in Ambala, which lies in close proximity or residential clusters, will not be permitted for the time being. With no room to let the guard down in the extended period of the nationwide lockdown till May 3, Khattar, meanwhile, said, "I heartily thank all citizens in Haryana for their support in the success of the lockdown. "As we have entered into lockdown 2.0, I request all the citizens to cooperate. Administration is working 24x7 to ensure the supply of essential commodities across the state". He also stated that Covid-19 pandemic has adversely affected Haryana's economy and development. "I request everyone to donate liberally and stand with the state. Your contribution will be precious in these testing times," he said.
