<ul><li>A recent study by Greenpeace has revealed that India ranks third on the world’s list of most polluted countries. </li><li>Seven of the world’s 10 most polluted cities are in India. </li><li>Globally, the alarming increase in air pollution is expected to cause 7 million premature deaths in the next year.</li></ul>A new study has revealed that India accounts for seven of the 10 most polluted cities in the world, with Gurugram ranking as the worst in the world with highest level of pollutants. Countrywise, India ranks third on the world ranking for <a href="https://www.airvisual.com/world-most-polluted-cities?continent=&amp;country=&amp;state=&amp;page=1&amp;perPage=50&amp;cities=">highest</a> PM 2.5 concentration, which are tiny particles believed to the most harmful for human health. Gurugram, in the National Capital Region, is the most polluted city in India and the world — with an average <a href="https://www.greenpeace.org/international/press-release/21193/latest-air-pollution-data-ranks-worlds-cities-worst-to-best/">air quality index</a> at 135.8, recorded last year. Other Indian cities that rank in the top 10 list includes Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Bhiwadi, Noida, Patna, and Lucknow . The report published by Greenpeace, India has highlighted that the alarming increase in air pollution may cause seven million premature deaths globally next year due to unequal distribution of PM 2.5 particles contributing to air pollution. Overall, 64% of the 3,000 cities covered in the report surpassed the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines on PM2.5 exposure, which includes pollutants such as sulphate, nitrate and black carbon among others. These particles may also lead to lung and heart disorders. This comes when India already has the most number of real-time data coverage centers, monitoring the <keyword id="2071721" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-Quality-Index">air quality index</keyword> around the country. It’s evident that in addition to monitoring, there is a pressing need to set pollution reduction targets and consumption caps on polluting fuels such as coal, petroleum and diesel in the most polluted areas. Productivity losses from pollution covers nearly 8.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in India, as per the World Bank analysis. In fact, stubble burning contributing to pollution, has lead to economic loss of ₹ 2 trillion in India, annually. Stressing on the world economy Yeb Sano, Executive Director of Greenpeace South East Asia <a href="https://www.greenpeace.org/international/press-release/21193/latest-air-pollution-data-ranks-worlds-cities-worst-to-best/">said</a> “Air pollution steals our livelihoods and our futures, but we can change that. In addition to human lives lost, there’s an estimated global cost of $225 billion in lost labour, and trillions in medical costs. This has enormous impacts, on our health and on our wallets.” According to another <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/most-polluted-cities-in-india-will-still-have-filthy-air-despite-ncap-says-greenpeace/articleshow/67749627.cms">report</a> by Greenpeace on pollution, even if the country reduces PM10 levels that it targets to accomplish by 2024, India will still have 139 cities with hazardous pollution levels. India accounts for 7 of the world’s 10 most polluted cities — with Gurugram ranked as the worst: Study

As of now, India can boast of having five mega cities, Delhi, Mumbai, <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword>, <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> and Chennai, having a joint population of over 10 million people; however, by 2030, two more cities (Hyderabad and Ahmedabad) would cross the mark, taking the total number to seven. 
 
Delhi, like now, will continue to be the second most populous city in the world till 2030, and would have added a whopping 9.6 million people by then. 
 
The above facts have been stated in the 2016 World Cities Report, which was issued by the UN's department of economic and social affairs. 
 
The report used the concept of "urban agglomeration," the contiguous urban or built-up area. For example, when they studied Delhi, its urban agglomeration included the satellite cities of Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad and Gurgaon, given that people in these nearby areas are economically and socially integrated with the main city. 
 
Around the world, there are 31 such mega cities, housing about 500 million people, roughly 6.8% of the world's population. As per the report, by 2030, there would be 10 more mega cities, with a combined population of about 730 million.

 This <keyword id="203146" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Population-Day">World Population Day</keyword>’s theme is-‘Investing in Teenage Girls’, which is subject of grave concern. 
 
World over, teenage girls face a number of challenges such as early marriage and motherhood. Many teenage girls are forced to drop out of schools and are marginalised. 
 
To bring these challenges to zilch, UNFPA has been running a series of programmes that aim to end child marriage, curb adolescent pregnancy, and to empower girls to make informed choices about their health and lives. 
 
In 2015 alone, UNFPA programmes helped 11.2 million girls between ages 10 and 19 gain access to sexual and reproductive health services and information.

Majority of 2019 Lok Sabha election result prediction for Gurgaon opine that the sitting MP Rao Inderjit Singh of the BJP will win from this seat once again. Gurgaon constituency elected Inderjit Singh, the BJP candidate from this constituency during 2014 general elections. He got 644,780 votes and the runner up in the constituency was Zakir Hussain of Indian National Lok Dal who got 370,058 votes. Notably, Rao Inderjit Singh of BJP won from Gurgaon in 2009 election also, but he fought on a Congress ticket during that election. As per the message published by the Election Commission, the voter turnout in Gurgaon during 2019 general elections was good when compared with the averages gathered from the other constituencies of Haryana.

Most of the world’s youngest people, particularly Gen Zers, live in these countries

The latest projections by the United Nations suggest that the global population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 10.4 billion in 2100. The annual World Population Prospect report, released on Monday to coincide with <keyword id="203146" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-population-day" source="Orion">World Population Day</keyword>, also notes that the global population is growing at its slowest rate since 1950, having fallen to less that one per cent in 2020. While it took the global population 12 years to grow from 7 to 8 billion, it will take approximately 15 years--until 2037-- for it to reach 9 billion, a sign that the overall growth rate of the global population is slowing. Population growth is caused in part by declining levels of mortality, as reflected in increased levels of life expectancy at birth. Globally, life expectancy reached 72.8 years in 2019, an increase of almost 9 years since 1990. Further reductions in mortality are projected to result in an average longevity of around 77.2 years globally in 2050. Countries with the highest fertility levels tend to be those with the lowest income per capita. Global population growth has therefore over time become increasingly concentrated among the world's poorest countries, most of which are in sub-Saharan Africa. In these countries, sustained rapid population growth can thwart the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which remain the world's best pathway toward a happy and healthy future. Even though population growth magnifies the environmental impact of economic development, rising per capita incomes are the main driver of unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. The countries with the highest per capita consumption of material resources and emissions of greenhouse gas emissions tend to be those where income per capita is higher, not those where the population is growing rapidly. Meeting the objectives of the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise, while achieving the SDGs, critically depends on curbing unsustainable patterns of production and consumption, according to UN. Yet, slower population growth over many decades could help to mitigate the further accumulation of environmental damage in the second half of the current century. World population to hit 8 billion people today

As digital and technical skills continue to dominate the job market in India, relocating to other cities has become a necessity among India’s working-age population. According to a recent report titled ‘India Workforce Report,’ by LinkedIn, which analysed the industry hiring trends in India, National Capital Region including Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida has emerged as the top city for taking up jobs. Bangalore and Hyderabad came second and third respectively. The report also highlighted technical and programming skills including coding and software skills, as the leading skills in Bengaluru. While management was noted as the most sought-after skill in Delhi and Mumbai. "Hyderabad is amongst the top three cities attracting talent, preceding Mumbai at number four. The broader goal is to use these insights to inform policy-making in the skills, education and employment sectors,” said Mahesh Narayanan, Country Manager, India, LinkedIn. “Healthcare emerged among the top 5 industries in five cities, including Mumbai and Hyderabad,” he added. Here are the top cities in India where job seekers are relocating

Think Mumbai and we think of the ‘maximum’ city; the city that never sleeps; the city on the Indian coastline that never ceases to amaze with its spirit and perseverance; the city that never loses the spring in its step. 
 
Till now, the city lived and thrived upon its local train network. Most of the population must have spent most of their time in those trains, only visiting their respective homes to catch up on food and sleep. That may sound like an overstatement to many who don’t live there. But the truth is this train network, stretching up to 465 km and built by the British way back in 1853, forms the very core of the city’s soul. 
 Only recently, the city that is always on the move, got wind beneath its wings. It was a historic occasion for Mumbaikars when the <keyword id="117023" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mumbai-metro">Mumbai Metro</keyword> started rolling on elevated tracks, connecting 11.40 km and helping 700 million passengers reach their destinations. Needless to say, the metro has added immense pace to their already busy life. 
 
Just like the human facelift, it adds to the character of the city when it gets a metro. The city then ceases to live in time warp and joins the cadre of the ‘selected few’ cities in the world which are green, futuristic and efficient in every way. 
 
Other ‘metro’ cities such as Kolkata, Delhi, Gurgaon and Bangalore are already contributing in reducing traffic density while the upcoming metro rail projects in cities like Jaipur, Kochi, Hyderabad and Chennai will ensure similar advantages. Plans to expand train operations are also afoot in the ‘metro’ cities. 
 
Cities such as Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Bhopal are also making a beeline to get the ‘metro’ projects approved although they do not qualify for the same due to limited population. But this may spell good news for international players who see an opportunity to participate in building the country’s infrastructure. 
 As India has been one of the favourite destinations for international investments, countries like South Korea are showing interest in building the transport infrastructure of the country. In fact, Korean company Hyndai Rotem recently placed a huge order with Voith for the extension of <keyword id="6366797" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi-Metro">Delhi Metro</keyword>. 
 
It is no wonder then that the infrastructure of Mumbai is undergoing a ‘Gen Z’ category of facelift. You need to keep in mind that the cities clocking growth are the ones which are driving the new economy and the facilities created for these cities with tremendous ‘growth potential’ are presumed to be world class, too. 
 
To understand this better, we need to compare the Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore Metro with those in Singapore, Hong Kong or New York. It will be a fair comparison because all the metro systems of the world today serve the same purpose – that of catering to different pockets of urban population. 
 
Interestingly, a metro city is defined as one that has found solutions to meet its ever-growing transportation needs. A ‘global city’ is the one that has more than 60-80% of its population travelling by public transportation. And a metro rail plays a significant role in this marker of progress. It also efficiently addresses a city’s growing energy needs while bringing down the carbon footprint. 
 
The world’s oldest metro system is the London Underground or the Tube that celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2013. This one has stood the test of time, compared to most other metros in the world, and has kept London comparatively free from traffic congestion. 
 
Compared to the world metro networks, India has miles to tread and catch up with the speed. The Indian metro lines don’t come close to the technology advancements featured by the trains across the globe. But then, India has a unique problem – the high density of population. 
 
However, Hong Kong, which decidedly grapples with the same challenge, does its act rather efficiently. The Hong Kong MTR (Metro) has earned praises for its presentation and schedule. It has also kept up with modern technology and offers free Wi-Fi services to passengers. 
 Seoul’s <keyword id="6366667" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Subway">Subway</keyword> is managed by three companies and has a hassle-free run day after day, on nine dedicated lines. Technology planners from the world over come here to get their lessons in connectivity. 
 
While the Singapore Metro has been given partial thumbs-down by users for keeping the ticket queues long and inefficient, the London Tube is constantly undergoing upgrades in order to cope with modern-day requirements. The Paris Metro hasn’t done too badly either, considering the fact that it is one of the five busiest cities in the world. However, technology upgradation seems to be the need of the hour. 
 
Now that India is embracing speedy and efficient transport systems, we must learn the nitty-gritty from the global counterparts wherever possible. But one thing stands very clear. The country has arrived late, but has arrived for sure. And India is here to stay in the global race when it comes to growth and progress.

India’s Metro Rail: Are We On Par With
Global Systems?

A luxurious city with crystalline structures, sumptuous apartments, ritzy malls and shopping arcades—that’s what comes to mind when we think of Gurgaon. But behind the glossy veneer lies a darker side. Built as mandated by the Haryana Development and Regulation of Urban Areas Act, 1975, which encouraged the private sector to develop huge land parcels and build apartment blocks and office complexes, Gurgaon is an example of poor urban planning, mismanagement and malfunctioning infrastructure. The city that aims to become India’s <keyword id="6356662" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Singapore">Singapore</keyword> by 2021 has poor air quality, roads with potholes and chaotic traffic to show for itself. Also consider the absence of public transport; a water table depleting at an alarming rate of 2-3 m per year; 8-10 hours of daily power cuts; sewage spilling on roads in the absence of waste management; 50 per cent of the population residing in haphazard conditions; and a high crime rate. 
 To make Gurgaon truly smart, all these issues must be considered by government agencies and private developers. For its part, the <keyword id="2970864" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gurgaon-government">Gurgaon government</keyword> has come up with a zero-outage target to be achieved within a year; this smart energy grid vision offers scope—and hope—for the city to become smart. Smart water management and conservation and rainwater harvesting would lead to availability of water 24/7 while recharging groundwater. To enhance infrastructure services, smart infrastructure design and planning are needed in sync with local government initiatives. To tackle traffic issues, smart integrated mobility would reduce private vehicular traffic by providing better public transport and last mile connectivity and prediction and mitigation of congestion would lead to better air quality. And the mammoth structures of glass must turn smart, adding intelligence to buildings to conserve energy, and become responsive and interactive in order to fulfil the demands of occupants.

<ul><li>Air <keyword id="13001" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="pollution">pollution</keyword> causes one in every nine deaths. </li><li><keyword id="6357478" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="kanpur">Kanpur</keyword> reported the highest PM10 concentration in India. </li><li><keyword id="6358070" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai">Mumbai</keyword> joined the list of the most polluted cities ranking at number four. </li></ul>The <keyword id="43588" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Health-Organization">World Health Organization</keyword> (WHO) <a href="http://www.who.int/">reports</a> that air pollution causes one in every nine deaths and 37% of all lung cancer-related deaths (1.7 million every year) worldwide. And with India being the second largest populated country in the world, this statistic is bound to have quite a harsh impact on the nation. Additionally, according to the report, most Indian cities are polluted to levels that are unsafe for human survival. The pollution is measured in units of <keyword id="935992" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="particulate-matter">particulate matter</keyword> (PM10 and PM2.5) in the air and the annual safe limit for PM2.5 is 40 μg/m3 and that of PM10 is 60 μg/m3. The city-wise report is as follows: Kanpur: Kanpur was reported highest on PM2.5 count scoring 173 μg/m3 and PM10 was 319 μg/m3. This rose from 108 μg/m3 and 199 μg/m3 respectively in 2015. <keyword id="66" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword>: With an established population of 19 million, Delhi has a PM10 concentration of 292 μg/m3 and PM2.5 at 143 μg/m3 which is almost double the annual safe limit mentioned above. The concentration rose from 215 μg/m3 (PM10) and 116 μg/m3 (PM2.5) in 2014. Mumbai: Mumbai joined the list of the most polluted cities ranking at number four, according to data compiled by WHO for megacities. The PM10 concentration was reported 104 μg/m3 and PM2.5 was 64 μg/m3. The concentration rose from 105 μg/m3 (PM10) and 66 μg/m3 (PM2.5) in 2015. Chennai: PM10 and PM2.5 were reported 80 μg/m3 and 52 μg/m3 respectively. Chennai reduced its PM2.5 concentration from 54 μg/m3 but the PM10 concentration rose from 70 μg/m3 in 2015. <keyword id="6354925" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kolkata">Kolkata</keyword>: Pollution soared in Kolkata in just one year. This report stated that the PM10 and PM2.5 were 136 μg/m3 and 74 μg/m3 which alarmingly increased by 41 μg/m3 and 22 μg/m3 since 2015. <keyword id="6356295" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="agra">Agra</keyword>: The government’s attempts to reduce pollution in Agra have been futile. According to the latest numbers, Agra’s PM10 and PM2.5 were 195 μg/m3 and 131 μg/m3 respectively. This has increased by 7 μg/m3 and 29 μg/m3 respectively. This can be correlated to the worrying reports that <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/taj-mahal-turning-brown-and-green-says-worried-supreme-court/article23739204.ece">Taj Mahal is turning brownish green</a>. Faridabad, Varanasi, Gaya, Patna, Lucknow, Muzaffarpur, Srinagar, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Patiala, Jodhpur are also among the top polluted cities, bringing India’s tally to 14 out of the 20 most polluted cities in the world.
