A few even found success at film festivals, but no Indian movie could capture the hearts of people across countries – not the way Ang Lee’s movie did. UK-based Gurinder Chadha too made superhit movies like ‘Bend it like Beckham’ and ‘Bride and Prejudice’ about Indians, but they were told from an immigrant Indian perspective. Even when Mumbai stories like Slumdog Millionaire were told, they were told by US-based directors like Danny Boyle. Desi movies were far from achieving any kind of acclaim or success. Chopra was further disheartened when director Anurag Kashyap told her once that <keyword id="20382" type="General" weightage="90" keywordseo="indian-movies" source="Orion">Indian movies</keyword> were just a comic relief. She never believed that, she shared at Zee5 Global’s panel discussion on ‘Coming of Age of South Asian Entertainment: The Time is Now’ in Mumbai. 2023: The year that changed it all Then Rajamouli’s RRR happened, and its song-and-dance number Natu Natu won an Oscar in 2023. That’s victory for the Indian way of story-telling on-screen that was once made fun of. “RRR changed the way Americans saw <keyword id="35703" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-films" source="Orion">Indian films</keyword>. People in the US were having watch parties for RRR. We were no longer that awkward brown guy with a strange accent. There was a sense of crossover taking place and that got us ambitious,” said Archana Anand, chief business officer of ZEE5 Global. Guneet Monga who also won the Best Documentary Short Film at the Oscars in 2023, believes that the path has been charted, and better things are waiting to happen. “We'll soon have our very own Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. We have the talent and technicians,” she added. The director of Maqbool, Vishal Bharadwaj also chimed in, saying, “At the rate we are going, a Parasite is waiting to happen here. An Indian film that will break all records and make it big all over the world.” Parasite is a South Korean black comedy which created history by becoming the first non-English language movie to win the Best Picture academy award. It swept the awards that year, bagging three more Oscar awards for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film. Movies that went as ‘series’ Before the Oscar wins, Indian movies have been breaking through slowly albeit steadily, reminisced the film-makers. The West started looking at Indian movies differently after the iconic movie-maker Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen which released in 1994. He later went on to make a full-fledged international movie Elizabeth, starring Cate Blanchett. “We’ve had AR Rahman’s success with his music in Slumdog Millionaire. I’ve had my own experience with Maqbool going to Toronto. With humility, I want to say that many people are doing doctorates on my Shakespeare trilogy,” said Bhardwaj. Music composer AR Rahman shared an Oscar for his song ‘Jai Ho’ with song writer Gulzar for the movie Slumdog Millionaire. Distribution is key to taking Indian movies to lands afar, believes Monga, adding that streaming services play a role. “Gangs of Wasseypur was the first Indian five-and-half-hour film that was released as an eight-part miniseries in the US,” she told the audience.

Both are forced to leave their ‘original’ homeland due to <keyword id="6373578" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="partition">Partition</keyword> and compelled to live a life of bloodshed, bullets and the occasional enemy banter taking place across the border. Narrated &amp; presented by writer/lyricist <keyword id="7470" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="GUlzar">Gulzar</keyword> and garbed in dark humour, Kya Dilli Kya Lahore unfolds how ‘political’ issues impact real life as we relive the nostalgia, the helplessness and the pathos of it all. Although a commendable movie by the <keyword id="193380" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Debutant-director">debutant director</keyword>, it fared poorly at the domestic box office and fetched an abysmal Rs 7-8 lakh on the debut day (May 2). As per industry estimates, KDKL netted around Rs 35-40 lakh after the first three days while the budget (cost and P&amp;A) has reportedly stood at Rs 5.5 crore. The movie hit about 250 screens at home but suffered terribly from poor promotion and near-zero pre-release buzz. 
 But then, <keyword id="6356809" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="producer">producer</keyword> <keyword id="476576" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Karan-Arora">Karan Arora</keyword> has told the media he is “not worried about the commercial viability” of the film and is content to know that he made “an honest film.” Film critic Shubhra Gupta sums it up well. “There’s something about the film that reminds you of the Bosnian Oscar winner <keyword id="1477726" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="No-Mans-Land">No Man’s Land</keyword>, a poignant reminder of the futility of war and the tragic waste of human lives. Kya Dilli Kya Lahore had the potential to be as powerful, maybe more, because it is our story… but single-tone. And that’s because the plot is so thin. This film could have been more.” 
 
 
 <keyword id="202523" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="debutante-director">Debutante director</keyword> <keyword id="2218584" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tanushri-Chattrji-Bassu">Tanushri Chattrji Bassu</keyword>’s coming-of-age bromance Purani Jeans did a little better at the box office, netting a little over Rs 1 crore in the debut week against a budget of Rs 11 crore. It’s the age-old story of two <keyword id="343" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Friends">friends</keyword> falling for the same girl – the staid <keyword id="1594" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Siddharth">Siddharth</keyword> (<keyword id="582705" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tanuj-Virwani">Tanuj Virwani</keyword>) from a poor background, the rich and spoilt brat <keyword id="23466" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sam">Sam</keyword> (<keyword id="1249127" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aditya-Seal">Aditya Seal</keyword>) and the trophy girlfriend, <keyword id="59965" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nayantara">Nayantara</keyword> (Brazilian <keyword id="334231" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="model-turned-actress">model-turned actress</keyword> <keyword id="1701426" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Izabelle-Leite">Izabelle Leite</keyword>). What follows is a youth-focused but totally cliché script that depicts every possible human emotion without much cohesiveness and one can hardly relate to the ‘growth pangs’ we all face during those wonder years. 
 Directed by <keyword id="2228541" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mahesh-Vaijnath-Doijode">Mahesh Vaijnath Doijode</keyword>, Kahin Hai Mera Pyar is all about an artist’s quest to find his dream girl, with loads of traditional <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> trappings weighing it down. <keyword id="766838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Abhishek-Sethiya">Abhishek Sethiya</keyword> and <keyword id="1049937" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sonia-Mann">Sonia Mann</keyword> don’t sizzle on-screen and the improbable storyline of this musical romance seems far removed from the reality. Although veteran <keyword id="297" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jackie-Shroff">Jackie Shroff</keyword> shines, the rest looks totally bleak (yes, even the VFX is bad) and its bleak performance is amply reflected at the domestic box office. Even after four days, the official numbers are not available although industry insiders have already written it off. Ramesh Rout-directed Angry Young Man also suffers the same fate. Starring Ajay Sinh Rathod (Arjun) and <keyword id="2110776" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prachi-Sinha">Prachi Sinha</keyword> (Sarah), this action movie reeks of <keyword id="26778" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="underworld">underworld</keyword>, revenge, love and benevolence – all rehashed from earlier Bollywood flicks of the same genre. The outcome is another flop and even here, the numbers are missing till date. So wait and watch for the next lot of movies to hit the theatres – those may just be able to break the Black Friday jinx plaguing the box office like never before.

From SRK-Taapsee to Ayushmann-Ananya: First time on-screen Bollywood pairings in 2023

<ul><li>Meghna Gulzar’s <keyword id="7140139" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chhapaak">Chhapaak</keyword> is scheduled to be launched on January 10 and brands have flocked to associate with the movie already. </li><li>One such brand is <keyword id="7170842" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="RSH-Global">RSH Global</keyword>’s Joy, which has launched a new range of products called ‘Joy Sensitive,’ meant for hyper-sensitive skin type -- including acid attack survivors. </li><li>While the ad uses Chhapaak’s impending popularity to create a buzz, we speak to experts to find out if it is all just a gimmick to tie into the film’s marketing or an important innovation. </li></ul>Right before the launch of Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak, which is about an acid attack survivor starring Deepika Padukone, RSH Global has launched a new range of products called ‘Joy Sensitive’, which is for people with hyper-sensitive skin, also suitable for acid attack survivors. This hypo-allergenic product range includes a face-wash, moisturiser, cream and sunscreen. According to RSH Global, India tops the list of countries for acid attacks globally and victims are often from a modest background. Given that the existing products available in the market are either scarce, expensive or belonging to the derma category, affordability played a key role in the development of Joy Sensitive. Before the launch, the brand conducted a research study on a sample of 20 people with extreme-sensitive skin, which started in September 2019. Interestingly, it was after the launch of the movie’s teaser that the brand decided to hit the shelves. To further latch on to the movie buzz, RSH Global launched a campaign called #skinofcourage that celebrates Malti, the protagonist from Chhapaak, and her courage. The voice-over reminds the audience what beauty truly is — beyond the physical appearance — happiness, courage, and talent.

 Explaining why the brand waited until now to launch this range of products, Poulomi Roy, CMO, RSH Global, said, “After our R&amp;D in September, in the month of December, we came to know about the detailed storyline of the movie Chhapaak from trusted sources and hence decided to associate with the 'larger cause'. We were clear that we are not looking for a film integration or a conventional co-branded promo. We spoke to Fox Studios and explained how the brand's association with the cause highlighted in the movie can help us reach a wider audience, we thus began our endeavour of association.” She said it took a long-pitch to convince Fox Studios about their genuineness. “The producers, director and cast of the movie were very cautious to associate with any brand but when vetted with the fact that our endeavour was pre-planned and genuine, the synergy matched,” added Roy. After the promo, RSH Global got in touch with Pragya, an acid attack survivor, who runs an NGO. The brand has started an employment drive with her, wherein it will hire two acid survivors and through LinkedIn, will further reach out to corporate HR and act as a mediator. “We also spoke to a few NGOs and counselors before deciding on the employment drive as part of the campaign. This was the time when we discovered that Maslow’s hierarchy of needs pyramid is completely upside down for acid survivors as compared to others. We realised there is a life after the incident and as a brand, we need to ensure safety and employment. To our mind, this was the space where we wanted to engage and make a difference in their lives,” explained Roy. Idea Behind the Brand Partnership According to N. Chandramouli, CEO, TRA Research, most products usually arise out of an identified consumer need and a large market. And in the case of Joy Sensitive, he feels that as there is a social objective involved, the brand should handle their communication with utmost care. “The movie and the product both will help bring out the 'real' lives of the survivors, and make audiences more sensitive to their personal suffering and triumphs. This is an extremely sensitive brand association and must be done in a completely natural and subtle fashion so that the brand rides on the message and not the other way around. I am hoping the brand does not squander this association and remains true to the victims' cause,” he noted. Social Media and Brand Expert, <keyword id="247533" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karthik-Srinivasan">Karthik Srinivasan</keyword>, took a closer look on RSH’s website to understand the actual products. He found that while the ‘Sensitive' range is present, there is no page dedicated to it yet, which made him wonder if it all could be a gimmick to tie into the film's marketing. “I would have expected them to walk the talk and mention who the product range is for, on the product. But I see the product being generic enough to be sold to all other kinds of people. I would still like to give them the benefit of the doubt since I have not seen the actual product's packaging - the back of the pack... if it mentions that this is sensitive enough for acid attack survivors since they claim R&amp;D with that intent started late last year. At this point, without further information and only PR-speak available, it looks like an opportunistic repositioning of a product range to suit the film's theme,” added Srinivasan. On the other hand, Ambi Parameswaran, Brand Strategist and Founder of Brand-Building.com, thought that associating with Chhapaak was a smart move to amplify its reach. “The concept of skin cosmetics for hyper allergic women have been in existence for a long time. But they are often very expensive. From what I can understand, Joy is launching a range of ‘hypo-allergenic’ range of skin care products and has tied up with a new movie release. This seems to be a smart move given the buzz around the movie. But it is a tall claim that this range was created only for acid attack survivors. So it is an opportunistic ride on a trend.” Considering that the victims are often from economically-weak background, Parameswaran also highlighted the importance of the ‘affordability factor’ and how it could determine the success of the product range. “I do hope their range of hypo-allergenic products are affordable as they have claimed. If so, it is a good move. The danger is that the brand may actually get stereotyped as a skin care brand for acid attack survivors only. That is a danger and Joy should worry about that too,” he added. A Look at the Research Study The product was dermatologically tested on 20 people with hypersensitive skin and Roy says “post our launch, we are looking forward to getting real-time feedback.” Shubho Sengupta, Brand Consultant, says lack of research indicates the brand’s true intention. “This is a gimmick, which has not been tested on real-life acid attack survivors, as the brand’s response clearly says. They are just trying to latch on for some paid publicity. But it's okay as some publicity for acid attack survivors is also good. They are also hiring two survivors, as they claim,” says Sengupta. How will it affect the Brand Image Harish Bijoor, Brand-expert and Founder, Harish Bijoor Consults, fears that this might portray RSH Global in a negative light for using the movie as a ploy for consumer attention. “I do believe this is marketing opportunism at work. For a product in this sensitive category, I do not think it will work. Consumers will sit up and see through it all. Marketers need to be more sensitive than this. Marketers will be seen as vultures who wait to swoop. And that's not a positive image to hold,” he shares. Past initiatives Joy, even in the past, has taken quite an unconventional path with its advertising. It had chosen a comedian -- Bharti Singh, to be its brand endorser and this time, Joy has ventured into an unusual category altogether that aims to break the stereotypes surrounding physical beauty. Sharing the brand credo and idea behind this path, Roy explained, “We don’t try to be different, we just like doing things differently. Getting Bharti on-board was for a similar purpose. When we want to have a strong point-of-view on beauty as a brand, our first step should be to internalise that. Taking her as a brand ambassador and not merely using it as a gimmick, was the right thing to do.”

RSH Global’s new range of products for acid attack survivors — a marketing gimmick or an important innovation?

The movie showed them as two fate-crossed lovers, who unite to get tragically separated, but the crackling chemistry between the two actors made news all around, and the two have been rumoured (or wished for) to be a real-life couple ever since. 
 
However, their fans were not getting a chance to see the two of them together on the screen, given that both of them got busy with their respective careers, until now that is.
