RS Sodhi steps down as managing director of Amul

The Kerala Co-operative <keyword id="170372" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="milk-marketing-federation" source="Orion">Milk Marketing Federation</keyword>, or <keyword id="251235" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="milma" source="Orion">Milma</keyword>, on Thursday announced its decision to hike prices of milk by Rs 6 per litre which will come into effect from December 1. Currently, the cost of a litre of milk in the state is Rs 46. The price hike comes three years after Milma had announced an increase of Rs 4 per litre in 2019. "That time, 83.75 per cent (Rs 3.35) of the additional amount went to the farmers. That proportion will continue this time which means Rs 5.025 of the Rs 6 will go to the farmer," said Chairman of the Federation, K.S. <keyword id="9128" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mani" source="Orion">Mani</keyword>. The latest decision comes after a Milma-appointed panel comprising experts from the state's veterinary and agriculture universities conducted a study on expenses incurred by dairy farmers. In its interim report submitted last week, the committee said that the farmers suffer an estimated loss of Rs 8.57 per litre of milk. Subsequently, the Milma Director Board convened a meeting and found that a price hike was inevitable, the Chairman said. "Though Milma is authorised to increase the price, the Board's decision was discussed with the state government and a suitable hike was finalised," he added. Along with a fresh hike in procurement prices, the milk cooperatives and distributors will each get 5.75 per cent of the new hiked amount, while 0.75 per cent of the amount will go to the Dairy Farmers Welfare Fund Board. Milma will get 3.50 per cent of the increased amount even as 0.50 per cent has been earmarked for the <keyword id="15606825" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="plastic-elimination-fund" source="Orion">Plastic Elimination Fund</keyword>. Besides the rise in the cooperative federation's milk procurement prices, the government has been giving various subsidies to the farmers. The present hike in the milk procurement price will benefit the milk producers, wooing more of them to join the dairy sector, Mani said. Milk prices hiked in Kerala by Rs 6 per litre

New Delhi [India], April 25 (ANI): Constrained supplies of milk and wheat, coupled with a volatile international crude oil market with OPEC+ countries deciding to cut crude oil production from May 2023 are factors that may, going forward, influence the inflation outlook in India, Ministry of Finance's Monthly Economic Review report put out on Tuesday noted. Milk inflation in India has remained elevated for several months due to a growing supply-demand mismatch. Milk production has been impacted by a Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) infecting millions of cattle in late 2022, its prices also rose because of high fodder and transportation costs. To meet the growing demand and considering the fact that the supply of milk in the ensuing summer season being a lean season may be less, the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying earlier this month said there were demands from several dairy cooperatives for the import of conserved dairy commodities - milk fat and powder. The ministry also added since the process of import takes time, the necessary back-end processes for need-based imports are being put in place to timely manage the situation in case of any eventuality. For wheat, there were reports from various key growing states that unseasonal rains have flattened standing crops in some regions. Wheat, a rabi crop was in an advanced maturing stage and was expected to hit mandis in a fortnight or so. "Although the second advance estimate has projected a record foodgrain production, the crop damage caused by unseasonal rains and hailstorms in some parts of the country since mid-March may constrain wheat production, besides perishable items such as fruits and vegetables," the Ministry of Finance's monthly report said. A survey conducted by Agri Watch, an Indian market information and analysis firm specialising in agricultural commodities, has estimated India's wheat production of 102.89 million tonnes in the 2022-23 crop season, reduced from 104.24 million tons (estimated in March 2023) due to unseasonal rains and hail storm faced by key wheat producing states towards the end of March. The estimates were based on the survey conducted in two phases across nine states- Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Notably, last year, too, the wheat crop was affected, not due to rains but heatwaves. That came on top of the conflict in Ukraine. Global <keyword id="3854307" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wheat-prices" source="Orion">wheat prices</keyword> have shown substantial volatility in the past year as both the countries -- Ukraine and Russia -- are two major suppliers of wheat. Multiple rounds of heat waves in several wheat-growing regions in India before the rabi harvest last year affected crops. Wheat pods in the mature stage typically shrink if overexposed to heat. To manage the overall food security of the country as well as meet the needs of the neighbouring and other vulnerable countries amid the double whammy, India then amended the export policy of wheat by putting its export under the "prohibited" category, which is still in force. RBI has been engaged in necessary policy actions to counter inflationary pressures and support growth. The Reserve Bank of India, in its first monetary policy review meeting in 2023-24, decided to keep the key benchmark interest rate -- the repo rate -- unchanged at 6.5 per cent, to assess the effects of the policy rate tightening done so far on various macroeconomic parameters. Barring the recent pause, RBI has so far raised the repo rate, the rate at which it lends to banks, by 250 basis points cumulatively since May 2022 in the fight against inflation. In the US, the interest rate is currently at 4.75 to 5.00 per cent, which was near zero during the initial days of the pandemic. Raising interest rates is a monetary policy instrument that typically helps suppress demand in the economy, thereby helping the inflation rate decline and vice versa. The RBI sees retail inflation declining to 5.2 per cent in the full year of 2023-24, lower than the 5.5 per cent attained in 2021-22 -- which was mostly free of the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In India, headline consumer price index-based (CPI) inflation (or retail inflation) has gradually declined from its peak of 7.8 per cent in April 2022 to 5.7 per cent in March 2023. (ANI)

The development follows an inspection of the facility by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) from April 26 to May 9, 2022. "We now wish to inform you that the company has received a communication from the USFDA stating that the facility has been listed under Import Alert," Sun Pharma said in a regulatory filing. Import alert implies that all future shipments of products manufactured at this facility are subject to refusal of admission to the US market until the facility becomes compliant with cGMP (current good manufacturing practice) standards, it added. The company further said, "The USFDA has excluded 14 products from this import alert subject to certain conditions." For the year ended 31-March-2022, supplies to the US market from the Halol facility accounted for approximately 3 per cent of the company's consolidated revenues, including the 14 excluded products, it added. As per information available on BSE, Sun Pharma had clocked revenue of Rs 15,585.98 crore in 2021-22. Sun Pharma said it "continues to cooperate with the USFDA and will undertake all necessary steps to resolve these issues and to ensure that the regulator is completely satisfied with the company's remedial action". This Indian brand will overtake FMCG king Hindustan Unilever by 2018-19

The prices will not be changed for at least six to eight weeks after GST is implemented on July 1st, since companies dealing in these areas aren't too sure about the affect that these companies will have on their cost of operations. While several household products like cookies, toothpastes, soaps and hair oils will be taxed lower at 18% after GST as compared to the present charge of about 22% in the current indirect tax structure of excise duty and value-added tax. However, other household detergents like shampoos and skincare products will be charged higher GST of 28%. "While our intent is to pass on the benefits of lower GST in the relevant categories where rates are coming down to consumers as soon as it is feasible, there are still some open issues where we need clarity such as how area-based exemptions will be handled, that will impact pricing decisions," <keyword id="6369697" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Godrej">Godrej</keyword> Consumer MD Vivek Gambhir told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/durables/good-news-your-grocery-expenses-wont-rise-after-gst-rollout/articleshow/59360111.cms">ET</a>. "There are hardly any changes in either price or grammage for the new stock that will hit the market from next week onwards," said an HUL distributor requesting anonymity. The only option would be to reduce or increase weight, but it won't be based on just GST on final products," said Mayank Shah, group product manager at Parle Products. "We need one-two months to see if the new tax has any impact on the cost of products and what will be the credit on input to offset them." Also, there would be no changes in the prices of milk, another household item that constitutes country's largest consumer segment - milk and curd. "We will drop prices of milk powder and baby food by close to 5%," said RS Sodhi, managing director of <keyword id="6531735" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gujarat-Cooperative-Milk-Marketing-Federation">Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation</keyword> (GCMMF), owner of <keyword id="26280" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="amul">Amul</keyword>. "But the new pricing will reach consumers only after a week or 10 days once the existing inventory gets exhausted." On Tuesday, Coca-Cola India had announced that it will increase prices of its aerated beverages and reduce the prices of packaged drinking water brand Kinley. It added that since aerated beverages will be attracting the maximum GST rate of 40%, they will be the worst hit segment post GST.

daCunha Communications, which makes outdoor <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=advertisements">ads</a> for <keyword id="6531735" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat-Cooperative-Milk-Marketing-Federation">Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation</keyword>'s (GCMMF's) Amul brand, is facing ire on social media as the film is being considered <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=sexist">sexist</a> and regressive. 
 
Amul fifth digital film-‘Har Ghar Amul Ghar’-went live on September 19 and ever since is attracting criticism. 
 
However, GCMMF has denied allegations of the film promoting gender bias. 
 
So much so was the anger that Sanjay Tripathy, senior executive vice president and head of marketing, product, analytics, digital and ecommerce at HDFC Life, tagged Jayen Mehta, general manager for planning and marketing at GCMMF, on Facebook and wrote: "Stop this ad." 
 
People also gave negative comments to the ad on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=youtube">YouTube</a>. 
 
The digital film shows a little girl decorating a room with dolls and she places a Barbie doll and Winnie-the-Pooh soft toy inside a baby cot. Enters the father with a newborn baby. He places the baby in the crib and replaces the Winnie and the Barbie with a Spiderman toy saying, "Bhai isse thodi na khelega?" 
 
The father talks to the little girl who seems visibly upset as her efforts to greet the baby went futile. 
 
Finally, when the girl says that she is disappointed as her baby brother won't be playing with her "dolls", the father starts teaching her to play cricket so that she can play with her brother. 
 
Experts say the ad was irresponsible and was not progressive. 
 
Prasad Challapalli, senior VP and head of iContract (part of Contract Advertising), wrote on Facebook: "The father rebuking the girl in the beginning was totally unnecessary. This Amul ad is going viral for all the wrong reasons

India’s top dairy product brand Amul is planning to triple its cheese output for which it is planning to invest Rs 600 crore in a Greenfield cheese plant, Palanpur, Gujarat. 
 "We want to reach out to hotels and restaurants where we see serious growth in our revenues," <keyword id="110794" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gujarat-Co-operative-Milk-Marketing-Federation">Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation</keyword>’s (GCMMF) Managing Director RS Sodhi told Economic Times, adding “most of the HoReCa (hotel/restaurant/cafe) industry is dependent on local brands for cheese. 
 
For starters, the plant will produce mozzarella and processed cheddar cheese. Amul, which is owned by GCMMF, is planning to increase its share in the Indian cheese market from current 65%. 
 
Amul’s value added products like butter, curd, ice-cream and milk-based beverages have seen impressive growth over the past few years. Amul butter holds 90% share in the Indian market while its fresh milk share is 40%-45%. 
 
 
Sodhi said that the brand would continue to focus on the domestic dairy products market, which is swelling with each passing day. 
 
The GCMMF had posted annual turnover of Rs 20,730 for the last fiscal ended March which was up 14% from the previous year’s Rs 18,143 crore.

A Mother Dairy spokesperson said that the dairy industry has been experiencing a consistent surge in raw milk prices, which has increased by about ₹ 3/kg in the last two months alone, owing to multifold increase in varied input costs. "Increased fodder prices and low rainfall in some northern states have aggravated the situation. We are therefore compelled to revise prices to support farmers and ensure availability of quality milk for consumers," he said. Earlier, during the day, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (<keyword id="134812" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GCMMF" source="Orion">GCMMF</keyword>), which sells milk and milk products under the brand name 'Amul' had announced raising the rates of full cream milk and buffalo milk by ₹ 2 per litre amid the festive season. The price of full cream milk has increased from ₹ 61 per litre to ₹ 63 per litre. Both the major dairy brands, Amul and Mother Dairy had in August hiked milk prices by ₹ 2 per litre to compensate the increase in procurement costs. Mother Dairy raises milk prices by ₹ 2 per litre on select variants

Following the recent crackdown by regulators over safety issues, food companies such as <keyword id="75190" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nestle">Nestle</keyword>, Amul, <keyword id="6357073" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ITC">ITC</keyword> and <keyword id="6376312" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mother-Dairy">Mother Dairy</keyword> have realized the importance of reaching out to its customers and have hence started consumer engagement exercises. 
 While Nestle has launched videos which show bachelors professing their love for <keyword id="6369404" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maggi">Maggi</keyword> and articulating how much they miss it, Kolkata-based food and cigarette major ITC has come up with films that highlight the safety of Sunfeast Yippee noodles. The latest Youtube video show Yippee noodles being made in a sanitized environment in its factory. 
 Similarly, <keyword id="3026737" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Gujarat-Cooperative-Milk-Marketing-Foundation">Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Foundation</keyword> (GCMMF), the maker behind the Amul brand of dairy products has been running ads emphasizing on the fact that their products are undergoing regular quality checks. Its rival, Mother Dairy is also not behind. Its ad campaign doing the rounds on social media shows its consumer on a plant visit. 
 
Meanwhile Nestle, the brand which was worst hit by regulators is already plotting the comeback of Maggi, piggybacking on its recent Maggi videos attracting around nine lakhs views in three days. 
 
"These short films reflect the spontaneity and affection between consumers and Maggi. We are making efforts to get Maggi Noodles back on the shelves and have been overwhelmed by the messages of love and support that we receive each day. Such messages strengthen our resolve to be back with our beloved consumers. We want to share the warmth of our relationship through these films," told a Nestle Indian spokesperson to Economic Times.

The Prime Minister had in 2018 launched 'Poshan Abhiyaan'-- a robust scheme which has been playing an important role in eliminating malnutrition from the country. In this regard, an official, requesting anonymity, told IANS that the Education Ministry may come up with a revised menu for midday meals scheme, that will include milk as an integral component. All the state government's have been told to implement the new midday meal policy which includes milk. Earlier, the then HRD Ministry had revised its midday meal policy in 2016. In order to give better quality food to children in schools where midday meals are provided, the HRD has revised its norms, that include milk as a necessary supplement. WCD Minister <keyword id="6612" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smriti-Irani">Smriti Irani</keyword> on Monday assured Vice-President <keyword id="8563926" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="m-venkaiah">M Venkaiah</keyword> Naidu that the central government would consider recommending to all the states to "include milk in the midday meal scheme". Irani's assurance came after Naidu earlier in the day suggested to her to add milk in breakfast or midday meals of children to improve nutritional level. The Vice President spoke with Irani on the 3rd Rashtriya Poshan Maah aimed at contributing towards a malnutrition-free India. An official in the Education Ministry told IANS that all students from Classes 1 to 8 in all government schools will be given 200 ml milk every day along with the midday meals. As per the official, this policy as is similar to the one issued in 2016 and then HRD Ministry direction to states in 2018 in which many loopholes were reported in its implementation. The states were earlier also directed to include milk and milk products in the midday meals so that these items could be procured from cooperative milk unions or federations. The Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries Department also took up the issue with the state Chief Secretaries on December 15, 2017, requesting them to consider supplying milk and milk products through their network under midday meals scheme of the Centre. Karnataka, <keyword id="6355554" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madhya-Pradesh">Madhya Pradesh</keyword>, Haryana, Puducherry, and Gujarat have confirmed supply of milk through schools but some states with higher surplus stocks of milk powder like Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Punjab are yet to decide in this regard. Almost two decades have passed since the midday meal became a part of the daily routine in government schools across the country. The central government had received complaints earlier on about inclusion of milk in midday meals. As per government norms, every child should receive 150-200 ml milk. However, there have been complaints that one litre of milk was mixed in a bucketful of water to serve to more than 80 children in a school in rural Uttar Pradesh. Some videos have also gone viral on the social media regarding the said incident. Milk to be 'integral' part of midday meal scheme soon

Mumbai, Feb 13 () <keyword id="108820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="milk-prices">Milk prices</keyword>, which have risen by Rs 4-5 per litre over the past nine months, are likely to stabilise in 2020-21 as production is expected to pick up due to abundant water availability and anticipated normal monsoon, according to a report. Production of <keyword id="6362951" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="milk">milk</keyword> has been shrinking since April last year due to high summer temperatures and lower availability of water, made worse by delay in rainfall, ratings agency <keyword id="6359483" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Crisil">Crisil</keyword> said in the report. This was followed by floods in various parts of the country, leading to poor animal health. Also, water logging in green pastures kept animals from grazing and damage to crops such as maize and sugarcane, which are used for fodder, crimped fodder availability, leading to lower milk production in the country, it added. This fiscal, milk production is expected to be lower by 5-6 per cent year-on-year at 176 million tonnes. The flush season that usually begins in November-December is estimated to have shifted by 1-2 months because of the delayed monsoon.

 Crisil said milk prices began moving up in May 2019, with Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF, better known as Amul) and Mother Dairy hiking the maximum retail price of their full-cream milk pouches by Rs 2 per litre. The two giants followed this up with a further hike of Rs 2 and Rs 3 per litre, respectively, in December, taking it to Rs 55 per litre. Other large dairy processors have started following suit, spurred by the shortfall in milk production around the country, and thereby supply. However, Crisil said milk production is expected to pick up in 2020-21, given abundant water in reservoirs and expectations of a normal monsoon. That should arrest any further rise in milk procurement and retail prices. Further, rabi sowing area had increased 10 per cent as on January 31, 2020. This is expected to lead to a 12 per cent increase in crop production for the season and higher arrivals of key crops such as wheat, bajra, jowar and maize from March would mean copious fodder availability, which should raise milk production next fiscal, the report said. This is expected to stabilise milk procurement costs, bolstering the operating margins of dairy processors. So, milk prices are not expected to rise any further in the coming few quarters, unless monsoons spoil the game for processors, it added.
