The <keyword id="517746" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-space-agency" source="Orion">Indian space agency</keyword> on Saturday at 12.07 a.m. began the 24-hour countdown for the launch of its heavy-lift rocket GSLV Mk III - renamed for this mission as LVM3 M2 - carrying 36 'OneWeb' satellites. The 43.5 metre tall and weighing 644 ton LVM3 M2 rocket is scheduled to blast off from the first second pad at India's rocket port in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh at 12.07 a.m. on Sunday. "The countdown is in progress smoothly. The gas charging and propellant filling operations of L110 stage are progressing," an Indian Space Research Organisation (<keyword id="6358064" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro" source="Orion">ISRO</keyword>) official told IANS. During the countdown, the rocket and satellite systems will be checked. The fuel for the rocket will also be filled. Normally the <keyword id="517231" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GSLV-rocket" source="Orion">GSLV rocket</keyword> is used for launching India's geostationary communication satellites. And hence it was named as GeoSynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). The GSLV MkIII refers to the third generation rocket. As the rocket that will fly on Sunday morning will be orbiting the OneWeb satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), the ISRO has renamed GSLV MkIII as LVM3 (Launch Vehicle MkIII). The rocket, just over 19 minutes into its flight, will sling the 36 small broadband communication satellites of Network Access Associated Ltd (OneWeb) in LEO. OneWeb, is a joint venture between India Bharti Global and the UK government. The satellite company plans to have a constellation of about 650 satellites in low earth orbit (LEO) to offer communication services. The LVM3 M2 is a three stage rocket with the first stage fired with liquid fuel, the two strap on motors powered by solid fuel, the second by liquid fuel and the third is the cryogenic engine. The ISRO's heavy lift rocket has a carrying capacity of 10 ton to the LEO and four ton to the Geo Transfer Orbit (GTO). "The total launch mass of OneWeb satellites will be 5,796 kg," said ISRO. The 36 satellites will be on a dispenser system made by the Swiss based Beyond Gravity, formerly RUAG Space. The Beyond Gravity had earlier provided the satellite dispensers for launching 428 OneWeb satellites to Arianespace. "The dispenser with 36 satellites was supplied by the vendor. It was used in all their earlier launches," the official told IANS. For Beyond Gravity, this is the first time their dispenser is fitted in an Indian rocket. Starting in 1999, ISRO has put into orbit 345 foreign satellites till date. The successful launch of 36 OneWeb satellites will take the tally to 381. Another set of 36 satellites from OneWeb is planned to be put into orbit in January 2023. This launch brings OneWeb's constellation to 462 satellites, more than 70 per cent of the satellites required for OneWeb to reach global coverage. According to ISRO, the OneWeb Constellation operates in a LEO Polar Orbit. The satellites are arranged in 12 rings (Orbital planes) with 49 satellites in each plane. The orbital planes are inclined to be near polar (87.9 Degree) and at 1,200 km above the Earth. Each satellite completes a full trip around the earth every 109 minutes. The earth is rotating underneath satellites, so they will always be flying over new locations on the ground. The constellation will have 648 satellites. NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL), the commercial arm of ISRO, has signed two contracts with Network Access Associated Ltd (OneWeb) for launching the latter's broadband communication satellites in low earth orbit. The board of OneWeb had voted to suspend satellite launches from the Baikonur rocket port in Russia. Meanwhile, the Sunday rocket mission has several firsts for the Indian space sector. It is the first commercial launch of GSLV MkIII and for the first time an Indian rocket will be ferrying a payload of about six tonnes. Similarly, the OneWeb is using an Indian rocket to put its satellites into orbit for the first time. Also, it is the first commercial launch of GSLV MkIII contracted by NSIL, and for the first time a renamed GSLV MkIII is being used for launching satellites in LEO. Countdown begins for ISRO's historic rocket launch

The <keyword id="119061" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organization">Indian Space Research Organization</keyword>’s latest generation launch vehicle Geosynchronous <keyword id="6358065" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Satellite">Satellite</keyword> Launch Vehicle Mark III (<keyword id="2634202" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="GSLV-Mk-III">GSLV Mk-III</keyword>), which is scheduled to be launched in on December 18, 2014, has successfully completed the 9 hours and 30 minutes launch rehearsal today. The rehearsal was done from Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR, Sriharikota. 
 The <keyword id="6358064" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ISRO">ISRO</keyword> said on its Facebook page: “All the data would be checked for one last time in the <keyword id="1985504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mission-Readiness-Review">Mission Readiness Review</keyword> planned on Dec 16. Launch, as we said, is planned on December 18.” 
 
GSLV Mk III is conceived and designed to make ISRO completely self-reliant in launching heavier communication satellites of INSAT-4 class, which weigh 4500 to 5000 kg. It would also envisage multi-mission launch capability for GTO, LEO, Polar and intermediate circular orbits. 
 
The first experimental suborbital flight of the GSLV Mk-III will carry solid boosters (S200s), liquid core stage (L110) and a passive cryogenic stage (C25). 
 
As per the ISRO’s official Facebook page, the primary objective of this sub-orbital flight is to validate the complex atmospheric ascent regime of this all new launcher, especially the aerodynamic and control features that cannot be conclusively tested on ground. 
 
In this experimental flight, the GSLV Mk-III would climb up to an altitude of nearly 125 km. To reap benefits out of this opportunity, a CARE (Crew-module Atmospheric Re-entry Experiment) Module is planned to be injected at this great height. 
 “The module has been realized to validate a number of technologies developed under ISRO’s Critical Technologies for Human Spaceflight Programme,” the Indian space agency added. It has also planned to recover this module from the <keyword id="55869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bay-of-Bengal">Bay of Bengal</keyword> after the splash down. 
 
With this new vehicle, ISRO aims to boost India’s capability to be a competitive player in the multi-million dollar commercial launch market.

ISRO Readies To Test-fly GSLV-Mark III On December 18

<ul><li>The Indian government has approved ₹10 billion in funding for programmes at the <keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (<keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>). </li><li>The resources will be distributed between the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (<keyword id="6395832" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="PSLV">PSLV</keyword>) and the <keyword id="502946" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Geosynchronous-Satellite-Launch-Vehicle">Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle</keyword> Mark-III (<keyword id="138322" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="GSLV">GSLV</keyword> Mk-III) projects. </li><li>Though ISRO is a research and development agency, their commercial launches help optimise costs.</li></ul>Despite recent setbacks, the central government has <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/in-big-boost-to-isro-centre-approves-rs-10-000-crore-plan-for-future-missions-1863715">green-lit</a> a budget of over ₹10 billion ($149 million) for projects at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The funds are meant to provide a boost to the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark-III (GSLV Mk-III) programmes. It’s not that ISRO’s reputation is coming into question but the launch failure of the GSAT-11 and its recall along with the GSAT-6A going incommunicado has cast a shadow on matters nonetheless. Analysts have <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/spate-of-setbacks-leaves-space-agency-isro-on-edge/story-PZZD1X19GdbVdiclNk76YP.html">surmised</a> that since ISRO operates on a ‘shoestring’ budget, direct monetary losses is where failures will have the most impact. Hedging against risk One has to understand that agency launches aren’t the same as commercial launches. Normally, the objective behind a commercial launch is to place the satellite in orbit, and then they’re done. On the other hand, when an agency launches a satellite not only do have to ensure the launch is a success but they also have to put measures in place to manage the pre-launch and post-launch operations. So, monetary losses occur across the board whenever there’s a failed launch because delays and re-testing are resource intensive. Considering that none of the satellites launched from India by the agency are <a href="http://www.rediff.com/money/2006/jul/14mspec.htm">insured</a>, it’s all the more reason to double check everything before sending the satellite into space. Because, once it’s lost, it’s a sunk cost for the agency. In order to hedge against that risk, it makes sense that ISRO is providing a boost to its launch vehicles. Operating through its commercial partner, Antrix, India is a <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/science/with-100-successful-satellite-launches-isro-in-new-orbit/article10029737.ece">dominant</a> player in the market that’s currently growing exponentially. Thus, it’s possible for more launch vehicles to increase the number of commercial launches that India can cater to. That being said, competition has been on the rise with the entry of new firms like SpaceX and Blue Origin. Their reusable technology <a href="https://futurism.com/elon-musk-with-new-spacex-tech-rocket-costs-will-drop-by-a-factor-of-100/">drastically</a> reduces the cost of launching rockets. There have been <a href="https://www.geospatialworld.net/blogs/isros-resuable-rocket-in-pipeline-but-may-take-some-time/">reports</a> of ISRO’s own reusable rocket being developed, but that may take some time. Nonetheless, ISRO’s Chairman K Sivan has <a href="http://www.defencenews.in/article/Spate-of-setbacks-leaves-space-agency-ISRO-on-edge-558627">emphasised</a> that the agency, at the end of the day, is a research and development (R&amp;D) platform. He explained that commercial launches only serve the purpose of optimising the cost of access to space and keeping up with industry standards. PSLV, GSLV Mk-III Programs From the budget of ₹10 billion, ₹6 billion ($89 million) is allocated for 30 PSLV operational flights as a part of the PSLV Continuation Programme, which is currently in Phase 6. Not only does this include the purchase of 30 PSLV vehicles, but also covers the costs associated with the launch campaign, facility augmentation and programme management. These flights will serve the purpose of meeting the required amount of satellites needed for Earth Observation, navigation and space species. And, the government claims that all the flights will be completed between 2019 to 2024. At the same time, funding for the GSLV Mk-III Continuation Programme amounts to approximately ₹4 billion ($59 million) which will be directed towards the Phase 1. Inclusive of 10 flights, unlocking this weight category will enable India’s self-reliance for future launches of communication satellites in the four-tonne class. The PSLV, on the other hand, has already <a href="https://www.isro.gov.in/launchers/pslv">launched</a> 48 Indian satellites and 209 international payloads. Indian Government approves ₹10 billion budget for two of its space programs

<keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (<keyword id="6358064" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="ISRO">ISRO</keyword>) is working on developing a semi-cryogenic engine that will run on eco-friendly kerosene oil, which is lighter than liquid fuel and doesn’t need extreme temperature conditions to be stored. Presently, the fuel being used, which is a combination of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, is heavier and needs to be stored at -253 degree Celsius. ISRO will reportedly flight-test the semi-cryogenic engine by 2021 if everything goes as planned. "Kerosene is a fuel lighter than the conventional combination of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen but it gives higher thrust. Therefore kerosene occupies less space and more propellant can be packed in the semi-cryogenic engine's fuel compartment. However, liquid oxygen will be retained as oxidiser. The advantage of using this semi-cryogenic engine is the payload capacity of the launch vehicle will increase from four tonnes to six tonnes. This kind of rocket with the semi-cryogenic engine can therefore take heavier satellites into space and can also be used for interplanetary missions and deep space missions," Dr <keyword id="2003919" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="K-Sivan">K Sivan</keyword>, Director of Thiruvananthapuram-based <keyword id="6382619" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vikram-Sarabhai-Space-Centre">Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre</keyword> told TOI. "We will only replace the second stage of the launch vehicle like <keyword id="138322" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="GSLV">GSLV</keyword> Mk-III, which now uses liquid fuel, with the semi-cryogenic engine. The rocket will retain the cryogenic upper third stage," he continued. "Space agencies of many countries like the US and Russia have been using the semi-cryogenic engine as it gives high thrust. In fact, Falcon-9 of SpaceX (the first US commercial company whose rocket has made multiple flights to the <keyword id="3242677" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="international-space-centre">International Space Centre</keyword>) has also been using the semi-cryogenic engine technology," Dr Sivan added. The semi-cryogenic engine project was cleared by the Union Cabinet in 2008 at an estimated cost of Rs 1,798 crore. While initially the technology was to be developed in 2014, the project got delayed.

ISRO is considering using kerosene for semi-cryogenic engine

<keyword id="6358064" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="ISRO">Isro</keyword>’s the GSAT-19 and the GSAT-11 satellites are all set to change the game of communications in India. Isro is undertaking a mega experiment at India's rocket port at <keyword id="6355143" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sriharikota">Sriharikota</keyword>: a spanking new monster rocket is all set to launch an altogether new class of communications <keyword id="6358065" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Satellite">satellite</keyword>. <keyword id="2735444" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tapan-Misra">Tapan Misra</keyword>, director of the Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad, where the GSAT-19 satellite has been designed, calls it "a game changer communications satellite for India". If it succeeds, the single GSAT-19 satellite will be equivalent to having a constellation of 6-7 of the older variety of communication satellites in space. Today, out of a constellation of 41 in-orbit Indian satellites, 13 are communication satellites. "A truly 'made in India' satellite that will empower a digital India that is in the making," says Misra of GSAT-19. India's heaviest rocket till date, the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark-III (<keyword id="138322" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="GSLV">GSLV</keyword> Mk-III) that weighs equivalent to the weight of five fully-loaded <keyword id="6357957" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Boeing">Boeing</keyword> Jumbo Jets or as much as 200 fully grown elephants is attracting all the attention. This is India's rocket of the future as it will undoubtedly be human rated to carry Indian astronauts likely to be named 'gaganauts or vyomanauts'. Former Isro chairman <keyword id="138287" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="K-Kasturirangan">K Kasturirangan</keyword>, the man who conceived the GSLV Mk-III, confirms it will be India's vehicle to ferry Indians into space. On this maiden mission, the GSAT-19 satellite this monster rocket will ferry is in a technological class that has no parallels in the country. The satellite weighing 3,136 kg is equal to the weight of a single elephant being lofted into space, but this novel satellite promises not to be a 'white elephant in space'. As space experts say rockets are like taxis, it is the passenger who is more important and hence in this forthcoming launch even though all eyes are on the GSLV Mk-III, the real focus should be on the unique passenger which is as Misra emphasises "the country's first satellite capable of providing internet services using a space-based platform". Internet services may not be unleashed immediately but what the country is putting together is a capability in place which is very important especially to connect places that are literally off the fibre optic Internet backbone. At over 3 tons, the GSAT-19 satellite will be the heaviest satellite made and to be launched from India and is a voluminous animal. Misra says "by volume it is the most enormous satellite made by India". The satellite is indeed a test bed for many new technologies.

<keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (ISRO) today successfully launched its heaviest rocket ever—the three-stage Geo-Synchronous <keyword id="6358065" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Satellite">Satellite</keyword> Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mark-III)—with an experimental crew module. With this, the Indian space agency will now be able to send astronauts to explore deep dark web of outer space. 
 The 630-tonne rocket and human crew module of ISRO were lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota exactly at 9:30 am (IST). Few minutes after this, the crew module separated from the rocket at an altitude of 126 km and re-entered Earth's atmosphere (about 80 km from sea level). And then, it descended in a ballistic mode and splashed down into the <keyword id="55869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bay-of-Bengal">Bay of Bengal</keyword>, some 180 km from Indira Point, which is the southern tip of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, reported PTI. 
 
"This was a very significant day in the history of Indian space programme for the development of the advanced launch vehicle that could carry a 4-tonne class of communication satellite into orbit," ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan said soon after the successful test flight. 
 
This mission has also enhanced India’s capability to be a competitive player in the multi-million dollar commercial launch market. It would envisage multi-mission launch capability for GTO, LEO, Polar and intermediate circular orbits. 
 <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> <keyword id="171378" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Naredra-Modi">Naredra Modi</keyword> took to Twitter to congratulate all ISRO scientists, “Successful launch of GSLV Mk-III is yet another triumph of brilliance &amp; hardwork of our scientists. Congrats to them for the efforts.” 
 
The total budget of the experimental mission carried out by the Indian space agency was Rs 155 crore, and this includes the cost of crew module as well.

ISRO Successfully Test-fires GSLV Mark-III

An Integrated <keyword id="15096121" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cryogenic-Engine-Manufacturing-Facility" source="Orion">Cryogenic Engine Manufacturing Facility</keyword> (ICMF) set up by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (<keyword id="68124" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="hal" source="Orion">HAL</keyword>) that would cater to the entire rocket engine production under one roof for Indian Space Research Organisation (<keyword id="6358064" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ISRO" source="Orion">ISRO</keyword>) was inaugurated by <keyword id="14514529" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="President-Droupadi-Murmu" source="Orion">President Droupadi Murmu</keyword> in Bengaluru on Tuesday. The state-of-the-art ICMF, set up over an area of 4,500 square metres houses over 70 hi-tech equipment and testing facilities for manufacturing cryogenic (CE20) and semi-cryogenic (SE2000) engines of Indian rockets. In 2013, an MOU was signed with ISRO for establishing the facility for manufacturing cryogenic engine modules at HAL, Aerospace Division, and it was subsequently amended in 2016 for setting up of ICMF with an investment of Rs 208 crore. Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, <keyword id="14657097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ISRO-Chairman-S-Somanath" source="Orion">ISRO Chairman S Somanath</keyword>, HAL Chairman and Managing Director C B Ananthakrishnan, among others were present at the event. The commissioning of all the critical equipment for the manufacturing and assembly requirement has been completed, Bengaluru-headquartered HAL has said, adding that the pre-production activities which involve preparation of the process and quality plans, and drawings, have also commenced. HAL will start realising the modules by March 2023, it said. HAL Aerospace Division manufactures liquid propellant tanks and launch vehicle structures of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV MK-II), GSLV Mk-III and also stage integration for GSLV MK-II. "The facility (ICMF) will cater to the entire Rocket Engine Manufacturing under one roof for ISRO. It will boost self-reliance in manufacturing of Hi-thrust Rocket engines," the HAL said. Cryogenic engines are the most widely used engines world over in launch vehicles, the statement said. Due to the complex nature of the cryogenic engine, till date only a few countries -- the USA, France, Japan, China and Russia -- have mastered the cryogenic technology. On January 5, 2014 India successfully flew GSLV-D5 with a cryogenic engine and became the sixth country in developing cryogenic engines (made by ISRO through private industries) and became the sixth country in developing cryogenic engines. Space exploration in the future is mostly dependent upon cryogenic technology. On that occasion, the President also laid the foundation stone for the Zonal Institute of Virology (South Zone) virtually. Union Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar, Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar were also present on the occasion. HAL's rocket engine manufacturing facility inaugurated in Karnataka

The Indian space agency is gearing up for launching the next set of 36 satellites of the UK-based Network Access Associated Ltd (<keyword id="2686914" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="oneweb" source="Orion">OneWeb</keyword>) in January 2023 by testing the crucial cryogenic engine of its rocket LVM3. According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (<keyword id="6358064" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="isro" source="Orion">ISRO</keyword>), the flight acceptance hot test of a CE-20 engine was successfully carried out for a duration of 25 seconds in the High Altitude Test facility of ISRO Propulsion Complex at Mahendragiri. This engine is earmarked for the LVM3-M3 mission identified for the launch of the next set of 36 numbers of OneWeb India-1 satellites, ISRO said. The cryogenic upper stage of the LVM3 vehicle (C25 stage) is powered by a CE-20 engine working with liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen (LOX-LH2) propellants combination. This engine develops a nominal thrust of 186.36 kN in vacuum. The major objectives of the flight acceptance test were to confirm the integrity of the hardware, assessment of subsystems' performance and tune the engine for meeting the mission requirements parameters for engine tuning for flight operation. Analysis of test data confirmed the satisfactory performance of the engine systems. This engine will be assembled to the C25 flight stage being integrated for the LVM3 M3 rocket. ISRO's commercial arm NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL) has signed a contra ct with OneWeb to launch 72 satellites in two phases for a launch fee of over Rs 1,000 crore, said Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman, OneWeb. The orbiting of first set to 36 satellites happened successfully on Oct 23 from Sriharikota rocket port in Andhra Pradesh with LVM3 rocket also known as Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle MkIII (GSLV MkIII). OneWeb plans to have a constellation of 648 satellites in low earth orbit (LEO) to offer its broadband services across the world. ISRO gearing up to launch the next set of 36 OneWeb satellites in January 2023

The reusable rocket aims to cut costs and will reportedly target the global market. This will help ISRO reduce the cost of launching satellites. India does not have reusable technology in the launch vehicle sector. This includes the Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator (IAD), which was recently tested successfully by ISRO. The IAD performs many tasks, including allowing the recovery of spent stages of rockets. During a launch, a rocket has three stages, the first two are disengaged once their task is completed. IAD will allow ISRO to save the spent stages. “So, it's a big shift from what we do today. I would like to see this take shape in the next few months. We would like to see such a rocket, a rocket which will be competitive enough, a rocket that will be cost-conscious, production-friendly, which will be built in India but operated globally for the services of the space sector," Somanath said. Further, the ISRO chairman mentioned that the space agency will retire the existing launch vehicles being used once the technology is ready. “This should happen in the next few years so that we can retire all those operating launch vehicles (in India) at an appropriate time," Somanath added. After numerous experiments and failures, Elon Musk’s SpaceX has deployed reusable rockets. It is worth noting that the Falcon 9 and <keyword id="612753" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="falcon-heavy" source="Orion">Falcon Heavy</keyword> rockets are only partially reusable. However, SpaceX is trying to develop a Starship-Super Heavy System which will be fully reusable. SpaceX had earlier said that the cost of each launch could be reduced by up to 80% once the technology is fully developed. Musk had said that the refurbishment and reuse of a booster is done for less than 10% the price of a new booster. India’s space agency wants to design and build reusable rockets for the world

For the training of astronauts, ISRO and Russian government-owned Glavkosmos signed a contract for training. Robots and humans are gearing up to explore space with ISRO's Gaganyaan

Scientist S. Somanath is all set to take over as the new Chairman of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/interview-these-former-isro-scientists-are-hoping-for-the-biggest-ever-funding-in-the-indian-spacetech-industry/articleshow/87911503.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">Indian Space Research Organisation</a> (ISRO), succeeding K. Sivan. Somanath, who is currently Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in the Kerala state capital, will be fourth Keralite to occupy the topmost post in the Indian space sector. The previous Malayalees who have held the top post are K. Kasturirangan, G. Madhavan Nair, and K. Radhakrishnan. Sivan was given a year's extension and his term is set to end very soon and Somnath's name was cleared for the top office way back in 2019 itself, by virtue of his seniority in the ISRO hierarchy. Somanath completed his Pre Degree from the Maharaja's College, Ernakulam and did mechanical engineering from the TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, near here and in 1985 joined the VSSC centre here and has had no reason to look back after that. He later did his Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore with specialisation in Dynamics and Control. At the ISRO, he has been associated with the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) Project during its initial phase. Later he became the Associate Director (Projects) of the VSSC and also the Project Director of the GSLV Mk-III launch vehicle in 2010. He was also the Deputy Director of Propulsion and Space Ordinance Entity till November 2014. In June 2015, he took over as Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) at Valiamala, Thiruvananthapuram, and served there until January 2018. Somanath then took over as Director of VSSC from Sivan who became Chairman of the ISRO and now he is all set to succeed him in the top post too.

ISRO to release Chandrayaan-2 data globally from October

The static test of first stage solid motor (SS1) of <keyword id="6358064" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>'s <keyword id="6117656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Small-Satellite-Launch-Vehicle">Small Satellite Launch Vehicle</keyword> (<keyword id="6864059" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SSLV">SSLV</keyword>) -- a new-generation compact rocket -- was not successful, according to sources in ISRO. "Oscillation was noticed after 60 seconds into the test and nozzle was blown out near the bucket flange where it's attached with the motor at around 95 seconds", sources in the Bengaluru-headquartered <keyword id="498463" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Space-Agency">space agency</keyword> said. It was supposed to be tested for a total duration of about 110 seconds, officials said. The <keyword id="116095" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> had targeted to launch the first development flight of SSLV (D1) in April and may now in all probability have to revise this schedule. "SSLV First stage is a new solid motor...new design. New motor has to be static tested on the ground to prove its performance. If it is successful, one more of the same configuration is tested again for acceptance. If both are successful, no more ground test is required and third motor of the same configuration will be accepted for flight", an ISRO official said. SS2 and SS3 motors, igniters and SS2 flex nozzle assembly, liquid propulsion-based VTM (Velocity Trimming Module) thrusters, propellant tanks and propulsion components had already been realised by ISRO and made ready for the maiden orbital test flight. "We have to identify the root cause of the failure and modify the design", the official said on the unsuccessful testing at Sriharikota spaceport in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, about 100 kms north of Chennai, last week. Asked how long it may take for ISRO to complete the two static tests, the official said: "Maybe six months". SSLV is two metres in diameter and 34 meters in length with a lift-off weight of about 120 tons. ISRO has over the years realised five generations of launch vehicles -- SLV-3, ASLV, <keyword id="6395832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PSLV">PSLV</keyword>, GSLV and GSLV-MkIII. The space agency had earlier said the SSLV is going to be a new member of the launch vehicle family. It is intended to cater to emerging global small satellite launch service market. "We are flying an earth observation satellite (EOS-02) on board the the first development flight of SSLV", ISRO Chairman and Secretary in the <keyword id="245720" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Space">Department of Space</keyword>, K Sivan said last month. SSLV has been designed to meet "launch on demand" requirements in a cost-effective manner for small satellites in a dedicated and ride share mode. It is a three-stage all solid vehicle with a capability to launch up to 500 kg satellite mass into 500 km low earth orbit (LEO) and 300 kg to Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO). By comparison, PSLV -- the workhorse of ISRO -- can take up to 1,750 kg payload into SSO of 600 km altitude. With lower per kg launch cost, the mini launcher will have multiple satellite mounting options for nano, micro and small satellites. Sivan had earlier termed the SSLV an innovative vehicle, which can be assembled in just 72 hours. "Instead of 60 days (for building a PSLV), it (SSLV) will be assembled in three days; instead of 600 people (needed to build a PSLV), it (SSLV) will be done by six people", he had said. Chairman and Managing Director of ISRO's commercial arm, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), G Narayanan, recently said: "the world over there is a big boom for small launch vehicles and that's why we are focusing on that". This undisclosed customer is reportedly Seattle-based BlackSky Global, which will launch four earth observation satellites on board SSLV-D2 in the ride share mission arranged Spaceflight. "The SSLV is the much-needed solution to fill the gap in the portfolio of small launch vehicles," Curt Blake, CEO and President of Spaceflight, had said.
