2018 proved to be one of the busiest years for Indian Space Research Organisation. From launching 31 satellites in one go to rolling plans about India’s second lunar exploration mission in 2019, the country took several steps to mark its presence among the top space explorers around the globe. (Image Credit- isro.gov.in) The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched its Hyperspectral Imaging Satellite (<keyword id="7066281" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="HySIS">HySIS</keyword>) along with 30 other foreign commercial satellites on 28th November from the Sriharikota launch centre using the PSLV C43 rocket. Hyperspectral imaging allows the satellites to identify objects from outer space. With the launch, S. The 51.03-meter tall rocket weighing 780 tons <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/science/space/news/isro-gsat-30-launch-explained-step-by-step/articleshow/73313054.cms">climbed into the sky</a> with 2.9 million pounds of thrust from its core engine and solid-fueled boosters. This may be the first launch of 2020 but its one of the last for Ariane 5. ESA’s Ariane 6 is scheduled for its first launch in 2020. After a transition period of five years, Ariane 5 will take its last trip into space in 2023.

 The rocket’s boosters did 90% of the work, pushing the payloads against Earth’s gravity by burning 2 tons of propellant per second — an average year’s worth of gas for a car.

 The first payload — GSAT 30’s fellow passenger the Eutelsat Konnect satellite — was deployed at an altitude of 1000 kilometres. The broadband communications satellite for the Paris-based company is based on a new satellite design by Thales Alenia Space with an all-electric propulsion system and xenon plasma thrusters. After a cumulative 38 minutes, Ariane 5 placed the GSAT 30 into geostationary transit orbit (GTO). From here, the satellite will raise its orbit from the to the final circular geostationary orbit (GSO) by controlled firing of its motor. That’s when it will finally deploy its solar panels and antennas. What does GSAT 30 do? India’s 3357-kilo GSAT 30 satellite is a replacement for Insat 4A — launched back in 2005, also abroad an Ariane 5 rocket.  GSAT 30 will operate from 83 degrees east longitude from Earth’s geostationary orbit. It will help cable operators broadcast their content overseas. ISRO’s claims the GSAT 30 will increase the C-band and K-band coverage over India, its islands, Asian countries, Gulf countries and Australia. "GSAT 30 will provide continuity of direct-to-home TV services from this slot, as well as digital satellite news-gathering and very small aperture terminal services," said ISRO chairman K.  That satellite has been designed to last at least 15 years with 12 C-band transponders and 12 Ku-band transponders. It has three-axis stabilised momentum-based control systems with a host of sensors, reaction wheels and thrusters. "The Ku-band transponders will provide services over the Indian mainland and islands. The satellite employs high-power amplifier and state-of-the-art antenna systems to meet the requirements of multiple users," Sivan explained. In order to maneuver in space, the satellite hastwo large propellant tanks accommodated within its central structural cylinder. The liquid apogee motor — GSAT 30’s main engine — is mounted on a separate deck with interfaces with the bottom ring of the cylinder. The power system of the satellite includes double-side solar arrays for generating electric power in addition a lithium-ion battery of 180 amps of capacity. Until now, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched 20 other GSAT satellites — 14 of which are still in service. The last one was GSAT-31, launched in February last year. However, ISRO plans to launch at least three more GSAT satellites in 2020.  At 2:07 am (IST) the space launch vehicle Ariane-5 VA-246 carrying India’s GSAT-11 and South Korea’s GEO-KOMPSAT-2A satellites lifted off from Kourou Launch Base in the spaceport from French Guiana. Within half an hour after lifting off from the spaceport, GSAT-11 was separated from Ariana 5 and placed into orbit. ‘The Big Bird’: India marks successful launch of its heaviest satellite GSAT-11 onboard space vehicle Ariane-5

The service aims to deliver high-speed broadband across the country, including in the most remote areas beyond the reach of terrestrial networks, thus connecting enterprise and government networks. "At ISRO, we are committed to exploring and expanding the ways we can work with the private sector to help improve people's lives and bridge the digital divide," said Dr S Somnath, Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman, ISRO. ""With the new HTS capabilities powered by ISRO satellites, we are confident that HCI will continue to deliver excellent quality satellite broadband services and further enhance the connectivity experience that accelerates India's digital transformation," Somnath added. HCI provides satellite broadband across more than 200,000 business and government sites in India, supporting enterprises as well as strategic central and state government projects. In use on more than 75 satellites, the Hughes JUPITER System is the de facto standard for both high-throughput and conventional satellite implementations worldwide. "Available countrywide, HTS broadband from Hughes underscores our longstanding commitment to bridging the digital divide, delivering multi-megabit high-speed broadband at affordable rates," said Partho Banerjee, president and managing director, HCI. "This new broadband service will support the high-bandwidth requirements of government organisations, financial companies, cellular operators, mining and energy companies, among other businesses, large and small, helping to connect India to a limitless future,a he added. Hughes, ISRO launch satellite internet service in India as Musk's Starlink disappears

 This trend in Earth observation allows for a high level of differentiation that’s a huge improvement over the normal optical images used in conventional satellites. Experts in earth observation have <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/sci-tech/science/isro-to-develop-full-fledged-earth-observation-satellite/article19458651.ece">called</a> the technology the ‘CATSCAN’ of Earth from space. The agency plans on using this technology to help with agriculture, soil quality, coastal zones, and inland waters among other geological environments. It’s all about the chip Hyperspectral imaging has been around for a while but each country has its own take on how to implement it. In <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>’s case, the crux of hypex imaging lies in an optical imaging detector chip <a href="https://www.isro.gov.in/isro-develops-optical-imaging-detector-array-hyperspectral-imaging-applications">developed</a> by the Space Applications Centre (SAC) and manufactured by Semi Conductor Limited (SCL). The chip is capable of capturing images that can read upto 1,000 x 66 pixels.

Narrower measurement of wavelengths translates into more detailed imaging. Even in terms of scope, the former can identify 55 different spectral bands while the latter is only capable of capturing a maximum of 10 bands. India has already experimented with imaging spectroscopy when it launched the Chandrayaan-1, which had a hyperspectral camera on board to help map out the mineral resources available on the moon. The chairman of ISRO, K Sivan, told the <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/isro-to-launch-hyperspectral-imaging-sat-with-30-foreign-satellites-on-nov-29/articleshow/66801810.cms">Times of India</a>, “We are going to launch HySIS at 9.59 am on November 29 from Sriharkota. Less than 6% of 151,624 airline pilots across the globe are women. Surprisingly, India, which is a poster child for gender disparity, has been outperforming all other developed countries across the world with its impressive share of female pilots. Currently, Indian airlines have 1,092 female pilots as against 8,797 male pilots, reported <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/women-pilots-percentage-in-india-is-twice-that-of-global-average-data/articleshow/66539021.cms">Times of India</a>. Women make up 7.41% of the total 12,693 pilots at the airline.
