<ul class="summary-list"><li>CAGR stands for compound annual growth rate, and it is a measure of an investment's average past performance over a long period of time.</li><li>CAGR doesn't predict how an investment will perform in the future.</li><li>CAGR has its limitations and doesn't necessarily reflect an investment's actual performance.</li></ul>By their very nature, markets fluctuate constantly, making it difficult to know which investments are worth sinking your money into. While there's no way to reliably predict what's going to happen in any given market, there are some indicators that can give you an idea of what opportunities might be worth exploring. Compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) is one such measure. Here is a closer look at what CAGR is and what it means in terms of investments. <h2>What is compound annual growth rate (CAGR)? </h2>CAGR is a formula that calculates how the value of an investment has changed over the course of a specific time period, assuming all earnings have been reinvested and no deductions have been made. This calculation allows investors to look at how much an investment has gained or lost over one or more years as a way to determine overall performance. It's a useful tool for comparing multiple investments to see what might be worth buying into, whether it's securities, property, business, or anything else of value. <h2>How CAGR works </h2>CAGR is calculated by looking at the initial and final values of an investment and a period of time over which to evaluate performance. This formula is relatively simple and assumes that nothing has been deducted from the investment, such as a sale of shares. It also assumes that any value earned - through interest or dividends - has been reinvested and compounded into the investment. "The CAGR measure can be used in any industry," explains Daniel Garza, Chartered Financial Analyst and Senior Research Analyst with <a href="https://intercontinentalwealthadvisors.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Intercontinental Wealth Advisors</a>. "However, it can be used in the investment world to complement other widely used measures, such as time-weighted return. This is because some assets are not publicly traded and it's harder to know their value at a specific time every month/year to evaluate growth or rate of return."Garza says that CAGR is useful when applied to assets that don't have publicly available data to determine performance, such as property or physical assets. "This is because having an initial value for a physical asset and a final value for the same asset, regardless of the time frame, allows you to calculate it," he says. "There is no need to constantly know the value of this asset to get to CAGR." <h3>CAGR formula</h3>To calculate CAGR, use the following formula: <div type="image" title="Formula graphic for how to calculate Compound annual growth rate (CAGR)" height="707" width="1668" msid="84905532" hostid="261"></div><ul><li>Divide the final value of an investment by its starting value. </li><li>Apply the exponent of 1/N to that quotient. The value of N will be the timeframe you're evaluating, such as a number of years. </li><li>Finally, subtract 1 from the value you get from applying the exponent. </li></ul>Let's see how this works when you put it all together. To keep things simple, we are going to determine the CAGR for an investment that has grown from $100 to $108 in value over 5 years. Your formula would look like this when you plug in all of the values:CAGR = (108/100)/^⅕ -1 = .015511 or 1.5511% This tells us that on average, the investment gained 1.5511% in value each year during the selected five-year period. Some years may have seen more growth and others less. But it smooths out to this rate when you look at the timeframe as a whole. Quick tip: There are many CAGR calculators available online but you can also use Microsoft Excel. The program's <a href="https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/xirr-function-de1242ec-6477-445b-b11b-a303ad9adc9d" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">XIRR function</a> will calculate CAGR, or you can input the following formula into a spreadsheet cell: =((V2/V1))^(1/t)-1. This can save a lot of time and get you a quick calculation, taking some of the legwork out of your research.<h2>How investors use CAGR </h2>One of the most common reasons investors use CAGR is to compare investments. Though you're not seeing the actual gains and losses from year to year, CAGR shows you how an investment has historically performed. You can use this information to learn about one or more investments, see how they measure up to one another, and make informed decisions about where you want to put your money. You can also use CAGR to track business performance as a result of measures a company takes, such as policy changes or new products introduced to market. It can also give you an idea of a business' strengths and weaknesses. For example, a CAGR that shows a steady decline over a number of years might indicate that internal or external issues are impacting profitability and the business is struggling to overcome them. <h2>Disadvantages of CAGR </h2><ul><li>CAGR doesn't tell you anything about an investment's risk. It's simply a measure of past performance. It doesn't account for varying degrees of risk that all investments are vulnerable to. If you want to determine the risk-return reward of an investment, you can use other calculations, such as Sharpe's Ratio and Treynor's Ratios, both of which adjust for risks that CAGR doesn't. </li><li>CAGR is a "smoothed" value, meaning it doesn't show the history of highs and lows an investment has seen. Growth is assumed to be constant throughout the given timeline, even though that's not necessarily the case. </li><li>CAGR can't predict how an investment will perform in the future. You can look at past performance and make a guess as to whether or not an investment is likely to continue that pattern of growth. But it is in no way a guarantee, no matter how steady growth has been in the past. In fact, Garza says the shorter the time frame used in your analysis, the less likely it will be that the expected CAGR performance will be repeated. </li><li>Representation of data can be limited when you're talking about CAGR because you're only looking at performance during a specific time frame. There can be a lack of context that skews interpretation of CAGR. For example, if you're looking at stock that was hit hard during a recession and experienced rapid growth in the years recovering from a significant loss, the CAGR is going to seem overly high. That rate of increase will most likely slow as the company levels out. </li></ul><h2>CAGR vs. internal rate of return (IRR)</h2>CAGR is a simplified, overall look at past performance. The internal rate of return (IRR) calculation takes more factors into consideration than starting and ending values over time. It looks at inflows and outflows of cash and multiple time periods. Because it assumes that growth is consistent from year to year within the evaluation period, it may not accurately reflect the volatility an investment experienced. It's a smoothed average that doesn't tell the whole story but can be used to quickly compare how different investments stand up to each other. You'll find CAGR applied to all kinds of industries and to just about anything of value. What is compound annual growth rate?

<ul><li>CRISIL cut the country’s growth estimates by 0.2% to 6.9% for the current financial year.</li><li>In 2017, the country clocked in an impressive 8.2% growth which was the fastest in the decade.</li><li>This year’s average corporate revenues were at 8%, lower than the double-digit growth seen in the last two years.</li></ul> Weak monsoons, sluggish auto sales and global cues are eating into India’s economic growth. Calling it a ‘triangulation’ of downside risks, rating agency CRISIL cut the country’s growth estimates by 0.2% to 6.9% for the current financial year. This year, India's growth might be less than the 14-year record average of 7%. Like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/Narendra-Modi-has-a-new-problem-big-corporates-and-moneybags-are-angry/articleshow/70450878.cms">many corporates</a>, the agency too is blaming the government. “Given the crosswinds, the sops announced so far might not be enough to pitchfork growth in this fiscal to, or above 7% per annum,” said Ashu Suyash, managing director of CRISIL said in a report on India, which was ominously titled - ‘Uphill Trek’. Just two years back, in 2017, the country clocked in an impressive 8.2% growth which was the fastest in the decade. The crucial question remains---can the government do something to change the falling fortunes? It sees that even if it helps stimulate the economy, it would either fall short and won’t last long either. “Given the fiscal constraints, public spending is unlikely to have the heft to pull growth above 7%. And some of the recent, and much-needed, reforms would pay off only over the medium term. There would, therefore, be some near-term onus on monetary policy to stimulate. But how effective that can be is the big question,” said Dharmakirti Joshi, Chief Economist, CRISIL. India's economic growth this year may be less than the 14-year average
-- and the government is helpless

India is not growing at a seven per cent rate as being reported by the government, an eminent Indian-origin economist has claimed, citing flat growth in several key sectors, according to a <keyword id="6367495" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PTI">PTI</keyword> news report. "They (India's national accounts) show India's growing at seven per cent a year. But I along with many other economists, I'm afraid don't believe the national accounts. They were redone in 2011," Vijay R Joshi, Emeritus Fellow of Merton College, Oxford and Reader Emeritus in Economics, University of Oxford, told a <keyword id="6354998" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Washington">Washington</keyword> audience. Joshi, the author of a book titled 'India's Long Road--The Search for Prosperity' alleged that India's growth rate is back at 5.5 per cent, but the national accounts show a much rosier picture. During a discussion organised by the <keyword id="468500" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Carnegie-Endowment-for-International-Peace">Carnegie Endowment for International Peace</keyword>, a top American think-tank, the London-based economist gave several reasons to prove his point. "I will say one thing, (India's national accounts) is the only place where you can see seven per cent growth. You can't see it anywhere else. If you look at exports and imports, they have been flat. Shrinking or flat or growing very slowly. If you look at employment in the organised sector it's at a standstill," he argued. "If you look at industrial production, it has been growing very slowly. If you look at <keyword id="6355272" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bank">bank</keyword> credit, it has been growing very slowly. Bank credit in the industry has grown poorly in recent years," he asserted. "And especially if you look at investment, it has collapsed. The investment ratio which was 34 per cent of GDP in 2011 is now 27 per cent of GDP. So investment has really collapsed. (Thus) it is hard to believe that national income is growing at seven per cent a year," Joshi said. Responding to questions, Joshi said that under the present trends, India is unlikely to grow at seven-nine per cent a year for the next 25 years. "Not on present trends. Not unless we really gour act together. We can probably continue to grow at 5-5.5 per cent a year," he said, adding that a long-term growth rate of seven to nine per cent a year is a feat that has rarely been achieved by a democratic country like India. "This is a feat that has been achieved very rarely. It has been achieved only by three countries. That is China, South Korea, and <keyword id="46274" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Taiwan">Taiwan</keyword> and perhaps Singapore." Responding to another question, Joshi said while the Indian government led by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> has done quite well, but it has completely neglected the education and health sectors.

Economist claims India’s growth rate is fictitious

New Delhi, Extra-marital dating app <keyword id="4031884" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="gleeden">Gleeden</keyword> said on Tuesday that it has crossed 1.3 million subscribers in India during the Covid-19 period, adding that its subscription rate skyrocketed over the past three months. During September, October and <keyword id="10437147" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="november-subscriptions">November subscriptions</keyword> from India grew by over 24.6% as compared to June, July and August. According to the company, the platform has gained almost three <keyword id="9639568" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="lakh-subscribers">lakh subscribers</keyword> in the last four months of which 2.5 lakh users were added in the past two months. Overall, the time spent on the website tripled since 2019. Even after the lockdown restrictions were lifted, people still felt safer with virtual dating as compared to a real-life meeting, as the risk to catch the virus still remains high. "We are pleased to see the nationwide acceptance of our extramarital dating platform," Sybil Shiddell, Country Manager, Gleeden, India, said in a statement. The platform also gained massive grounds in Tier1 cities with Bengaluru claiming the 1st spot with 16.2% of the total Gleeden community in India and has shown a more than 17% growth in terms of new user acquisition since March 2020. They are followed by Mumbai with 15.6% of Gleeden users and with a <keyword id="34528" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="growth-rate">growth rate</keyword> of over 14%. Delhi has moved up to the third spot with 15.4% of Indian users and a growth of over 25%. The growth rate of Amazon's ad business is plunging but revenue is still up

New Delhi, Dec 5 () Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh on Thursday said 4.5 per cent growth rate in the September quarter was not "unprecedented" and hoped that the gross domestic product will improve.
 "There is nothing to be worried about it. 4.5 per cent is the second quarter (September quarter) assessment. In the next quarter, we hope that it would go up again," said Singh, who is Minister of State for Statistics, Programme Implementation and Planning, in the Rajya Sabha.
 He added that the growth rate has also gone down earlier also and then bounced back in the following quarter.
 "Concerns have been raised about GDP, which has come down to 4.5 per cent in the second quarter," he said adding that "this is something which is not unprecedented".
 In 2008-09 also, the GDP fell to 3.9 per cent (on the base year of 2004-05).
 "Immediately after, in the next year, the GDP went up by 8.5 per cent. Our country has such resilience to overtake this 4.5 per cent GDP that has come into the second quarter," he said.
 Quarter-wise, there has been precedents when one quarter has been low and then the next quarter, the GDP has bounced back and jumped up to a high number.
 "In the second quarter of 2014-15, the GDP growth rate was 8.7 per cent and in the third quarter, it came down to 5.9 per cent and in the fourth quarter again jumped to 7.1 per cent," he said.
 Similarly, in the first quarter of 2016-17, the growth was 9.4 per cent and further came down to 8.9 per cent and then went up again. HRS

Reinhart identifies two big trends. One is declining Labor Force Participation Rate, a trend which started well before the recent slump. And the other is declining productivity. Fewer labors and less productivity make it hard to keep up the same growth pace.

MORGAN STANLEY: The Economy's Potential Growth Rate Has Now Permanently Declined

New Delhi, Jan 31 () The government on Friday revised downwards the economic growth rate for 2018-19 to 6.1 per cent from 6.8 per cent estimated earlier mainly due to deceleration in mining, manufacturing and farm sectors.
 "Real GDP or GDP at constant (2011-12) prices for the years 2018-19 and 2017-18 stand at Rs 139.81 lakh crore and Rs 131.75 lakh crore, respectively, showing growth of 6.1 per cent during 2018-19 and 7.0 per cent during 2017-18," the National Statistical Office said in revised national account data released on Friday. Bhubaneswar, Feb 17 () Natural calamities anddeceleration in mining and manufacturing sectors were amongthe key factors that may lower Odisha's economic growth to6.16 per cent in the 2019-20 fiscal, a state government reportshowed on Monday.Odisha's growth rate was 7.90 per cent in the lastfinancial year, the Economic Survey Report presented in theassembly by Finance Minister Niranjan Pujari, said.The national economy is also projected to decelerateto 5 per cent in 2019-20, the report said.During the last decade, Odisha faced naturalcalamities like flood, cyclone, tornado and drought, it said.However, the report said the per capita income of thestate in 2019-20 is expected to reach Rs 1,01,578, up from Rs95,164 in 2018-19.As per advance estimates, the state's per capita netdomestic product at current prices is estimated to grow at6.75 per cent in the current fiscal.While the services sector continued to be the largestcontributor to Odisha's GVA (gross value added) at 40.51 percent, it was followed by the industries sector (39.60 percent) and agriculture and allied sectors (19.90 per cent) in2019-20. Odisha''s growth rate likely to fall to 6.16pc in FY20

Patna, Feb 24 () Bihar clocked a growth rate of10.53 per cent in 2018-19 as against the national average of6.8 per cent, according to the state's Economic Survey for2019-20."Bihar recorded an average growth rate of above 10 percent in the past three consecutive years," Deputy ChiefMinister Sushil Kumar Modi said, while tabling the 14thEconomic Survey in the assembly.The main drivers of the economy which have helped thestate register a double-digit growth include air transport (36per cent), other services (20 per cent), trader and repairservices (17.6 per cent) and road transport (14 per cent), hesaid.Sushil Modi said the fiscal deficit was 2.68 per centof GSDP, revenue surplus 1.34 per cent and outstanding publicdebt liability of the state government 32.34 per cent of theGSDP during 2018-19.The total revenue receipt of Bihar was Rs 1,31,793crore and capital receipt Rs 20,494 crore, he said, adding,revenue expenditure and total expenditure were Rs 1,24,897crore and Rs 1,54,655 crore, respectively.Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) stood at Rs5,57,490 crore at current prices and Rs 3,94,350 crore atconstant (2011-12) prices in 2018-19, he added.
