Now, in a new incident, a doctor from Thane, Maharashtra, was misled by three Karnataka-based suspects who promised earnings via a municipal contract to supply medical equipment, costing him ₹3.84 crore. Despite investing over a three-year period, he saw no returns and reported the crime to the Naupada police, who have registered a case but made no arrests. Thane doctor tricked by false municipal contract According to a PTI report, a 39-year-old doctor in Thane, Maharashtra was deceived by three men from Karnataka. These fraudsters offered him lucrative returns through a supposed municipal contract for supplying medical equipment. Convinced by the promise of reliable profits, the doctor began investing heavily in December 2020, making significant contributions until March this year. The doctor’s substantial investment – totalling ₹3.84 crore – was made over multiple transactions from December 2020 and March this year, in anticipation of high returns that never materialised. Suspicion finally arose after the doctor had seen no profits despite his repeated investments. Recognising he may have been defrauded, he reached out to the Naupada police station, who registered a case under charges of cheating. While no arrests have been made so far, authorities have launched an investigation to track down the perpetrators and recover the funds if possible. A police official told PTI, "The man approached police after he did not get profits or any return on investment. We have registered a case of cheating but have not arrested anyone." Ahmedabad gynaecologist duped in <keyword id="21361161" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="stock-market-scam" source="keywords">stock market scam</keyword> In a similar incident, a gynaecologist from Ahmedabad lost ₹1.1 crore to a scam that began with a social media advertisement. Attracted by the potential for substantial stock market returns, the doctor engaged with a group promising expert tips and was subsequently added to a WhatsApp group where members shared investment insights. Through this group, he was introduced to a web link for stock and IPO investments, along with an application that required his banking details and identification documents. A PTI report revealed that the doctor’s initial investment of ₹50,000 yielded a profit of ₹10,000, which he successfully withdrew. This initial success encouraged him to make larger investments, transferring ₹1.1 crore through multiple transactions in pursuit of higher gains. When he later attempted to withdraw his funds, he was unexpectedly asked to pay 20% of his total profits. After refusing this demand, he was removed from the WhatsApp group and realised the extent of the deception. He contacted Cybercrime police in February, and after months of waiting, a formal case was registered against unknown suspects under charges of breach of trust and cheating, alongside provisions of the <keyword id="20003647" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="information-technology-act" source="keywords">Information Technology Act</keyword>.

Many insurers are making significant changes in 2025.Deductibles and prescription drug costs will become more expensive for some Medicare recipients — and it could impact whether older Americans can afford healthcare. Insurance company mergers and closures are contributing to shifting Medicare plans and prices. Companies like Aetna or AARP/UnitedHealthcare are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/insurance/medicare/big-part-d-changes">merging their coverage plans</a>, while previous insurers like Mutual of Omaha are leaving the market. That's leading to fewer — and sometimes pricier — options for Medicare recipients. "When plans end or a merger happens, Medicare enrollees can be impacted in two noticeable ways," Elizabeth <keyword id="23786390" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ayoola" source="keywords">Ayoola</keyword>, personal finance writer at NerdWallet, said in a statement to Business Insider. "In the case of the former, enrollees may be left vulnerable without coverage and scrambling to find a new plan. Millions of older Americans depend on Medicare to pay for services like prescriptions and doctor visits. The federal insurance plan — which is often tied to Social Security andtypicallyapplies to people over 65 — is many baby boomers' main source of health coverage. Like other health insurance programs, recipientshave a yearly enrollment period.EligibleAmericans can now join, drop, or switch their supplementalMedicare plans through December 7. Ayoola told BI that if beneficiaries don't take action to adjust their health insurance plansbefore December 7, they could soon see higher out-of-pocket costs, reduced care options, or more limited drug coverage — issues that can't be resolved after the enrollment period closes. However, some beneficiaries will see price increases or loss of coverage regardless. "For people who are budgeting, open enrollment is especially important," Ayoola said. "Because it's a time to do comparison shopping and essentially see if you can find a cheaper plan somewhere else." <h2>Medicare changes on the horizon</h2>An estimate shared with BI from Healthpilot, a technology platform that helps customers choose Medicare plans, suggests that millions of older Americans could lose part of their Medicare benefits in 2025. Healthpilot estimates that there will be 1.5 million people impacted by <keyword id="23786388" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="medicare-advantageplan" source="keywords">Medicare Advantageplan</keyword> cancellations and 3.5 million impacted by prescription drug coverage cancellations, due in part to insurance consolidation. Former beneficiaries of those plans will need to find new coverage to replace them next year. The Medicare program has a few different branches: Parts A and B act as stand-alone health insurance programs and cover all types of inpatient and outpatient care, while Part D programs typically cover prescription drugs and basic provider visits as a supplement to people's private insurance plans. Part C, also known as <keyword id="20413657" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="medicare-advantage" source="keywords">Medicare Advantage</keyword>, allows seniors to join plans that are offered by private companies but are governed by Medicare rules. Advantage plans have their own caps on how much patients can spend out of pocket, and those numbers change annually. While beneficiaries with Part A and B Medicare could see premium adjustments, most major changes will occur for people with supplemental Part D and Medicare Advantage plans. An increasing number of Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans are setting their deductible, or the amount of out-of-pocket costs patients are on the hook for before the plan kicks in, at the maximum allowed amount. Healthpilot found that 10% of Medicare Advantage plans will be at the maximum deductible — up from 5% last year. Most Medicare Advantage beneficiaries will still have prescription drug coverage in the new year, but they may face higher out-of-pocket costs. In total, the number of Medicare Advantage plans with drug benefits is largely holding steady, dropping2%. But within the group of Medicare Advantage plans that still have drug benefits, the number of $0 deductible plans will be cut in half — meaning more plans with prescription drug coverage will have higher out-of-pocket costs upfront. To be sure, not all older adultswill be negatively affected by the changes. Some might also have employer-sponsored or private healthcare coverage outside of Medicare, or have plans that aren't changing. But for the Americans who are impacted, the changes could mean healthcare becomes even more of a financial strain. <h2>Baby boomers are already struggling with healthcare costs</h2>These changing Medicare costs come as many low-income baby boomers are struggling to keep up with medical bills. Two older Americans shared with Business Insider their fears for what could happen if their out-of-pocket costs rise in the new year. <keyword id="23786389" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lisa-callejas" source="keywords">Lisa Callejas</keyword> isworried about what would happen if her husband got sick next year. If that happens, they might not be able to afford treatment — her husband's Medicare out-of-pocket costs will go up to $14,000 from around $9,500. "It means we better not get sick," she said. Callejas, 55, and her husband movedto his native Mexico over the summerto save money. Their son died in January, and Callejas' husband, who worked with their son in the family business of home remodeling, can no longer do the manual labor necessary to keep operations running. Additionally, the rising <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retirement-savings-social-security-baby-boomers-without-savings-401k-poverty-2024-8">cost of living</a> made it increasingly difficult to stay in the US on a lower income. They're living off the money they made from selling their house in the US and her husband's small <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boomers-living-social-security-government-aid-snap-loneliness-crisis-isolation-2024-8">Social Security</a> benefits, but fearful of 2025. Betty, similarly, goes to her dialysis appointments three times a week. She was diagnosed with kidney disease and other conditions a few years ago, forcingher to retire early from her steady job in health communications. Betty — who chose to use her first name for privacy but whose identity was verified by Business Insider —lives on her $1,848 monthly <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/what-is-social-security">Social Security disability payments </a>in southwest Illinois. The 61-year-old said she qualifies for both Medicare and <keyword id="20234511" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="medicaid" source="keywords">Medicaid</keyword>, but still pays a couple hundred dollars each month in healthcare expenses, in addition to her monthly $174 premium. Betty isn't sure yet if her Medicare premiums or deductibles will rise in the new year. If they do, she says she can't afford it. She already struggles to afford housing, groceries, utilities, and the car she needs to travel to her dialysis appointments. "Something as small as $20, I can't even imagine," she said. "I had about $10 left over for this month — but that was because I had to sell some jewelry that my mom picked out. I had to sell it in order to make the bills this month." <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boomer-lives-on-social-security-struggles-financially-feels-lonely-retirement-2024-9">Low-income baby boomers</a> like Betty and the Callejas family might feel the greatest hurt from increased Medicare prices, Ayoola said, and these healthcare costs can derail retirement and long-term finances. Regardless of financial health, Ayoola suggested older adults talk to a Medicare expert or wealth advisor before choosing a 2025 plan. "We can't predict the future and we don't know which direction our health is going to go in," Ayoola said. "It's a good idea, no matter where your health is today, to always try your best to budget for health care expenses and look for ways to cut costs." However, she couldn't schedule appointments for follow-up care, which doctors consider necessary for proper recovery. For several months after her meniscus surgery, Case kept calling the center for an appointment with no success while her knee deteriorated.Now Case takes time off from work and spends up to $125 round trip on gas while traveling to Portland for arthritis care. Case said that symptoms like stiffness, swelling, and discomfort — which resulted from a lack of postsurgical medical support — could interfere with her sleep, gait, and ability to enjoy her hobbies like hiking and gardening."Until you've experienced not being able to see a doctor, you don't really realize how frustrating it is," Case, who is 53, told Business Insider. Eventually, she will need surgery for a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nc-woman-plans-finally-getting-knee-surgery-after-winning-lottery-2023-1">full knee replacement</a>.Case said that she remains concerned that the overall lack of medical care in her community, as she's observed doctors retiring or leaving her area.Some of her family members and friends also struggle to find physicians close to home, Case said, so they have to drive long distances or wait for appointments.A March report from the Association of American Medical Colleges projected that the US would face a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-hospital-wait-times-are-bad-physician-shortage-low-pay-2024-4">physician shortage</a> of up to 86,000 specialists and primary-care doctors by 2036.Michael Dill, the organization's director of workforce studies, said this estimate was conservative."The country needs hundreds of thousands of doctors to provide an equal amount of care to everyone, including minorities, those without medical insurance, and people living in rural areas," he told BI.An aging population, physician retirement, and the administrative challenges of running a practice contribute to the shortage and disproportionally affect vulnerable populations such as older people, those lacking transportation options, and people with disabilities, public-health advocates told BI.Two solutions could be increasing medical-training programs in rural communities and passing legislation to retain and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-high-paying-jobs-hiring-doctors-construction-accounting-2024-4">bolster the physician workforce</a>.<h2 id="0a289233-786f-4ff1-969a-24da2c3ab5eb">An aging population and provider burnout are contributing to a worsening doctor shortage</h2>The effects of a doctor shortage are already here, Dr. Bruce Scott, the president of the American Medical Association, said.Scott practices in Louisville, Kentucky, and said that in addition to patients in rural areas driving hours to appointments, they're waiting months to see a doctor.Various factors, including an aging population, play a part in the situation, Dill said.In 2020, 55.8 million Americans, or 16.8% of the population, were 65 or older, and by 2030, all baby boomers will have reached age 65, according to a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2023/05/2020-census-united-states-older-population-grew.html ">US Census report.</a> As people age, they require more physician services, such as cardiologic or neurological care, and at the same time, doctors are aging and retiring, adding to the shortage, Dill said.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-hospital-beds-empty-nurses-doctors-staff-covid-vaccine-2021-10">Physician burnout</a> further exacerbates the problem, Scott said. In one survey that was part of AMA Organizational Biopsy report, of over 12,400 doctors, 48% of respondents said they were burned out. In another survey from the same report, one in three respondents said they planned to retire or reduce hours within two years.One AMA survey found some doctors were leaving their practices because they were being paid less to handle more <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-health-records-causing-doctor-burnout-2018-12">administrative burdens</a>, such as spending 12 hours a week filling out prior-authorization requests. "Medicare is paying us nearly 30% less in 2024 than it did in 2001, when adjusted for inflation," Scott said, citing further data compiled by the AMA.<h2 id="1d068686-c4d6-4ee0-81d9-f17918ad516a">Strategies to alleviate the shortage</h2>To help alleviate the physician shortage in rural areas, medical students need to receive training there, said Molly Fox, the vice president of institutional advancement at Kansas Health Science University."We engage students with the rural community because we know that people tend to practice where they feel connected," Fox said.At KHSU's Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine, for example, third- and fourth-year students can complete clinical rotations at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, four hours from Wichita, where the university is.Chase Hearn, a third-year student, said he'd seen doctors at the hospital who have worked 26-hour shifts to meet patient needs."I've also heard patients say they can't take a day off work to travel 200 miles to see their OB-GYN," Hearn said. He added that his training had strengthened his resolve to practice in a rural community but that he anticipated challenges, like burnout and working with patients who lack consistent access to care.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-el-paso-trying-solve-us-physician-shortage-2023-7">Rural residency programs</a> are also needed to address the shortage, Dill said. Only 2% of residency training occurs in rural areas, the US Government Accountability Office says.A residency program through Oregon Health &amp; Sciences University aims to alleviate the doctor shortage in three central-Oregon counties, including Crook County, where Case lives. The program is training physicians in primary care, family birthing, emergency medicine, behavioral health, and hospital medicine.According to the Rural Medical Training Collaborative, 133 rural residencies in family medicine and 69 rural-track programs are recruiting for 2025 enrollment, along with 30 internal-medicine residencies and 16 psychiatry residencies.Several pieces of legislation have also been introduced to Congress to address the doctor shortage. Scott said bills to adjust Medicare payments for doctors — no matter where they practice — to the annual rate of inflation and rules to reduce the need for prior authorization could help ease administrative burdens.Some legislation, if passed, would specifically influence rural areas.For example, HR 7855, the Association of American Medical Colleges-endorsed Rural Residency Planning and Development Act of 2024, would codify the Rural Residency Planning and Development Program, which funds the startup costs of residency training in rural areas, Dill said. From 2019 to 2024, the program has enabled the launch of 46 accredited rural residency programs across 38 states and Puerto Rico.Hollie Davis Frick, an immigration lawyer for Wintersteen Patel Law Group, said congressional action could easily incentivize doctors born abroad and who receive advanced medical training in the US to remain here and practice in rural areas."Many doctors who come here for residencies and fellowships return abroad because of our ineffective immigration policies," Davis Frick said.If passed, S 665, the Conrad State 30 and Physician Access Reauthorization Act, would allow state health departments to sponsor additional visa waivers for foreign-born doctors who agree to practice in underserved areas within those states.While Case remains skeptical that doctor-training initiatives and legislation will directly affect her community anytime soon, she considers herself fortunate, she said."I have the ability to drive, afford travel expenses, and pay for out-of-network doctors," Case said. "Not everybody does."

Many GLP-1 users have reported <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ozempic-wegovy-users-grapple-with-quitting-weight-loss-drugs-2024-5">weight gain after ceasing GLP-1 use</a>, while others have mentioned side effects like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ozempic-wegovy-semaglutide-weight-loss-drug-side-effects-pooping-pants-2023-5">diarrhea</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mounjaro-lawsuit-alleges-stomach-is-paralyzed-from-glp-1-use-2023-12">"paralyzed" stomachs</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mounjaro-vs-ozempic-side-effects-2023-5">hair loss, and nausea</a>.The US Preventive Services Task Force voiced concern for these potential side effects in children, as well as an excessive focus on weight instead of health.Nicholson said clinicians have used lifestyle interventions, like nutrition and exercise plans, to help children with obesity lose weight and reduce risk factors like hypertension, diabetes, and liver disease.However, the AAP's and the US Preventive Services Task Force's recommendations overlap, according to Amanda Staiano, an associate professor of pediatric obesity and health behavior at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center of Louisiana State University."The AAP explicitly states that drugs should not be a monotherapy. They are an adjunct to be used in combination with intensive health behavior and lifestyle treatment," Staino, who was on the AAP's clinical practice guideline authorship committee, told STAT.

Children with high BMIs should not use obesity medications like WeGovy, US doctors warn

The Indian Council of Medical Research Director General Dr Rajiv Bahl on Monday criticised a recently published study on the long-term safety analysis of the <keyword id="9485939" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="covaxin" source="Orion">Covaxin</keyword> in adults and adolescents for its poor methodology and design, and clarified the article misleadingly and erroneously "acknowledges" <keyword id="19918794" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICMR" source="keywords">ICMR</keyword>. Dr Bahl said the study had no control arm of unvaccinated individuals for comparing the rates of events between the vaccinated and unvaccinated groups. Hence, the reported events in the study cannot be linked or attributed to COVID-19 vaccination. He added that the ICMR is not associated with the study and has not provided any financial or technical support for the research. The ICMR DG has written a letter to the authors of the paper and Editor of the journal to immediately remove the acknowledgement to ICMR and publish an erratum. A research paper, titled 'Long-Term Safety Analysis of the BBVl52 <keyword id="21730391" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus-vaccine" source="keywords">Coronavirus Vaccine</keyword> in Adolescents and Adults: Findings from a l-Year Prospective Study in North India' stated that nearly one-third of the 926 participants in the study who received Bharat Biotech's anti-Covid vaccine Covaxin reported 'adverse events of special interest,' or AESI. Dr Bahl said that ICMR was acknowledged for research support without any prior approval of or intimation to ICMR, which is inappropriate and unacceptable. He stated that ICMR cannot be associated with this poorly designed study which purports to present a "safety analysis" of Covaxin due to several critical flaws. He said the study does not even provide background rates of observed events in the population, making it impossible to assess the change in incidence of observed events in the post-vaccination period. Baseline information of study participants is missing. The study tool used is inconsistent with 'Adverse Events of Special Interest (AESI)' as defined in the reference provided in the paper for AESI. The method of data collection has a high risk of bias, he said. Study participants were contacted telephonically one year after vaccination and their responses were recorded without any confirmation with clinical records or by physician examination, he pointed out. Dr Bahl also noted that similar acknowledgements to ICMR have been made in previous papers without permission, raising concerns about the authors' practices. "The authors have been urged to immediately rectify the acknowledgment to ICMR and publish an erratum. Additionally, they are asked to address the methodological concerns raised. Failure to do so may prompt ICMR to consider legal and administrative action," he said. The Editor has been asked to retract the paper which implicitly makes conclusions on <keyword id="21495684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccine-safety" source="keywords">vaccine safety</keyword> which are not supported by evidence. The study, conducted by researchers from the Banaras Hindu University from January 2022 to August 2023, stated that nearly 50 per cent of 926 study participants in the study complained of infections during the follow-up period, predominated by viral upper respiratory tract infections. Serious AESI, which included stroke and Guillain-Barre syndrome, were reported in one per cent of individuals, the study, which looked at long-term safety of the BBV152 (Covaxin) vaccine in adolescents and adults, claimed. The study involved 635 adolescents and 291 adults, who received the BBV152 vaccine.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Russian FPV drones injured 90% of wounded soldiers near Chasiv Yar, said a Ukrainian medic. </li><li>Drone warfare dominates the fighting around the key town, a Kyiv-based journalist said.</li></ul>Russian attack drones have inflicted about 90% of war injuries suffered by Ukrainian soldiers around a key town in the past six months, according to a medic stationed on the eastern front.<a target="_blank" href="https://kyivindependent.com/">Kyiv Independent</a> reporter Asami Terajima told Business Insider that she spoke to a medic called Oleksii who treats soldiers at a stabilization point near the frontline near Chasiv Yar before they are transported to hospitals.The majority of Oleksii's patients in the past six months were injured by <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-takes-out-one-russias-most-feared-drone-aces-report-2024-1?r=US&amp;IR=T">FPV (first-person-view) drones</a>, Terajima said.The strategic city of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-soldier-says-100-comrades-lost-russia-attack-no-fortifications-2024-5">Chasiv Yar</a> has been the target of a Russian offensive since December.<div type="image" title="An aerial image taken from Ukrainian drone footage showing multiple ruined buildings in Chasiv Yar, Donestk region, Ukraine, on April 29 2024." height="552" width="1000" msid="110824737" hostid="261" sizebytes="128178"></div>Russian troops have steadily advanced westward from the ruins of Bakhmut and Avdiivka, seizing a dozen small villages and nearing Chasiv Yar and a key highway to the south.Terajima said that FPV drone warfare was a major feature of the fighting in the Donetsk Oblast, particularly in the Bakhmut area.She said that in other parts of the eastern front, Ukrainian soldiers were being overwhelmed with glide bombs."The soldiers in the Avdiivka area were complaining a lot about the glide bombs that are now very intensively still being used," she told BI.Russia stepped up its use of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/huge-drone-strike-suggests-ukraine-going-after-russian-glide-bombs-2024-4">glide bombs</a> in October when it launched its offensive against Avdiivka.Powerful bombs are transformed into glide weapons by adding modified fins and guidance systems. They are launched at a distance from fighter planes and are difficult to spot on radar and shoot down.Terajima said that Ukrainian soldiers told her during the last days before the fall of Avdiivka in February, Russian forces were dropping about 60 glide bombs a day."Ukrainian soldiers are barely able to visit their families, and it's really demoralizing when Russian forces intensify the use of glide bombs," Terajima said. Despite fierce house-to-house fighting, Ukrainian troops are gradually being pushed out.She said that while the Ukrainian military is determined to present the ongoing battle as under control, holding Ivanivske would be difficult."In Ivanivske, everything is destroyed, and there's nowhere to hide," Terajima told BI. "You can't build a trench because there's the concrete underneath that prevents you from digging further."Lieutenant Colonel Nazar Voloshyn, a spokesperson for the Khortytsia grouping in the region, denied that Ivanivske was on the verge of falling.Terajima told BI that Ukraine is resolved to maintain a resilient image and that her coverage detailing Ukraine's losses is therefore considered "taboo" and "provocative" because it taints that image."Russia's forces are sustaining heavy losses, but they are still advancing at a rate that we don't like," Terajima said.By downplaying these advances, "we're basically turning away from the reality, not allowing the public to understand what's going on," she said."I think that no matter what, we need to always be honest and say it out how it is. And if we have heavy losses, then I think that has to be told."
