<ul class="summary-list"><li>Big tech companies have pulled back on PERM applications, often the first step to a green card.</li><li>Huge layoffs by Google, Amazon, Meta and other tech companies have made the process harder. </li></ul><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/big-tech">Big tech</a> companies have backed off <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/america-immigration-needs-reform-losing-workers-2023-3">green card</a> applications in a big way because the process has become tougher and there's less competition for talent.This situation is making it harder for foreign tech workers to stay in the US, and it may mean overseas candidates have to search far beyond Silicon Valley and New York City for jobs in the industry.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-requests-update-immigration-rules-hire-top-ai-talent-2024-5">Google</a> stopped so-called PERM applications in January 2023, the same month it laid off 12,000 employees. PERM is a certification process run by the Department of Labor. It aims to ensure that admitting foreign workers into the country doesn't impact US workers' job opportunities, wages, or working conditions. It's often the first step toward a green card.Earlier this year, Googlers were told the company wouldn't restart the PERM process until at least Q1 2025, according to a current employee with direct knowledge of the matter. A Google spokesperson declined to comment."Tech companies have been following Google's lead and taking their foot off the pedal in terms of green card applications," said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benachcollopy.com/ava-benach/">Ava Benach</a>, founding partner of Benach Collopy, a leading immigration law firm in Washington DC. "Google has an outsized influence here," she added. "It has a reputation for treating workers well and leading on these things, so if Google stepped back, then this gives other tech companies cover to step back, too."<h2>Amazon and Meta moves</h2>Earlier this year, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-suspended-us-green-card-applications-foreign-workers-2024-4">Amazon</a> told employees it would continue to pause all new PERM filings through 2024, according to an internal announcement seen by Business Insider.Amazon said in the memo it had initially paused PERM applications in 2023 and decided to keep these suspended until the end of this year after reviewing "labor market conditions and immigrant requirements."While <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-plan-meta-make-money-from-ai-2024-4">Meta</a> continues to undertake green card sponsorships for international hires, the process has become painfully slow. Getting a green card through Meta is now taking "a year or more," a current employee with knowledge of Meta's hiring processes said.<h2>PERM is a lot harder now</h2>A wave of <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-layoffs">job cuts</a> by Google, Amazon, Meta, and other tech companies has made the PERM process more complicated.Companies now have to demonstrate that laid-off employees are not qualified for the jobs intended for foreign workers. They also <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://bashyamglobal.com/blog/the-impact-of-layoffs-on-the-perm-process/">have to notify people</a> who were laid off in the past six months about job openings before filing PERM applications for foreign workers."With more US workers available for open positions, the labor market test fails and so the process becomes a waste of time and money for these tech companies," Benach explained. "If tech companies have done layoffs relatively recently, they also have to notify laid off workers of new positions that may be going to foreign workers," she added. "If some of these people say 'yes, I'm interested,' then you're out of luck with the green card application."Meta's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/layoff-angst-meta-employees-face-tough-reviews-reorgs-2024-3">multiple rounds</a> of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-vps-leave-ahead-of-thousands-more-layoffs-2023-5">mass layoffs</a> reduced the company's headcount by over 20%. The company is now <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-rehiring-workers-from-layoffs-2023-8">hiring again</a>, but it is having to work harder to explain to US Citizenship and Immigration Services why international workers are needed."It's hard to justify PERM after laying off people," the Meta employee told BI.<h2>Supply and demand</h2>Big tech companies may also be less willing to pursue green cards because of changes in supply and demand across the tech labor market.The industry went on a record hiring spree in the previous decade, and this only intensified during the pandemic boom. When big tech companies were fighting over a limited supply of tech talent, the PERM process was a useful weapon to wield."This is a cumbersome, arduous process that no one likes. It often happens when companies are competing intensely for talent," Benach explained. "Saying 'we'll do your green card for you,' is a great perk to attract the best tech employees.""So when, like now, there are more tech workers on the market, these companies don't have to do this as much," she added. "They are not all scrambling for talent anymore, or at least not as much."<h2>Alternatives for foreign tech workers</h2>What should foreign tech workers do if their current employer is taking too long with PERM applications, or has stopped the process entirely?Benach advises candidates to look outside of the Bay Area and New York City for tech jobs in the US. Many other employers across the country need people with science, technology, engineering, and math qualifications, she noted."It's not just Google and the other big Silicon Valley companies," Benach said. "Other companies in other parts of the country are in desperate need of tech workers."Labor market tests for the PERM process are by their nature local. And there are fewer tech workers in other parts of the country, with some people unwilling to move far for jobs. So this makes the green card process potentially easier outside of places like the Bay Area and NYC, she explained.<h2>Big Tech is trying alternatives, too</h2>In an email to BI, an Amazon spokesperson said the company is working with affected employees to find "alternative immigration pathways" to extend their stay in the US.To get around PERM hurdles, some companies are opting to classify international hires as applicants for a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uscis.gov/newsroom/alerts/uscis-updates-guidance-on-national-interest-waivers">National Interest Waiver</a>, the Meta employee noted.An NIW application can be done without corporate sponsorship, so an employee can "self-petition" without a specific job offer in hand. This process classifies foreign candidates as people with specific skills and experience that would benefit the US if they became permanent residents.NIW applications jumped in 2023, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/reports/stem_related_petition_trends_eb2_and_o1a_categories_factsheet_fy23.pdf">data</a> from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services.<h2>Google wants to change the roles</h2>Google is trying to fix PERM bottlenecks. On Wednesday, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-requests-update-immigration-rules-hire-top-ai-talent-2024-5">it filed a letter with the Department of Labor</a> arguing for changes that broaden the list of roles that can be fast-tracked to a green card.This "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/12/21/2023-27938/labor-certification-for-permanent-employment-of-foreign-workers-in-the-united-states-modernizing">Schedule A</a>" list focuses on jobs the Labor Department considers to be poorly supplied with talent. It hasn't been updated in 20 years, and Google argues the list hasn't evolved to meet the needs of the modern labor market.Google is in particular need of AI experts and the company says it will be hard to hire them all."We project that our need for AI Engineer roles, including Software Engineer, Research Engineer, and Research Scientist roles, will increase significantly in the coming years," Google wrote in the letter. Big Tech's big green card problem

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Andres Pico, a software engineer from Ecuador, navigated the US education system to land a job at Microsoft.</li><li>Pico faced challenges adapting to US standardized tests and sought scholarships to fund his education.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Andres Pico, a 29-year-old software engineer in Seattle. The following has been edited for length and clarity.I grew up in a small beach town called Manta in Ecuador with my dad, mom, and two sisters. My dad always taught me that there was nothing I couldn't do.I became interested in computers and technology because of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/playstation-plus">PlayStation</a>. Sometimes, I couldn't finish a game because the dialogue and options were in English, so I became very motivated to learn computers and English.<h2 id="aea16f41-f4aa-4e6e-926f-62684543751d">After graduating from high school, I decided I wanted to pursue my education in the US</h2>To apply to a university in the US, you must pass either the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/do-colleges-require-standardized-testing-sat-admissions-what-it-means-2024-3">SAT or ACT</a>. I bought an ACT book and prepared for many months to ensure I could get a good score.I knew I couldn't attend college in the US without a scholarship, so I began investigating scholarships and programs. I found the University of South Florida in Tampa offered a scholarship for students from Latin American countries that would get me a student visa.I was awarded the scholarship, which allowed me to receive a stipend of $1,000 a year to cover textbooks and resident status for tuition purposes.<h2 id="1ea4606f-8ed1-484d-bf1a-b39e05b12a66">I began a bachelor's degree in computer engineering in 2012</h2><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-and-uk-life-biggest-differences-after-moving-home-space-2024-7">Coming to the US</a> at 17 was very challenging. It was my first time leaving home, and there was a lot I didn't understand about the US. I had no close friends or family here for support or guidance.It was also very exciting, as it was an opportunity to push myself. It took some time to get used to classes in English. I studied hard from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.<h2 id="d640f046-61e6-4e77-9c39-669f1b3f751d">In my second semester, I found the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers</h2>The SHPE is a national organization that empowers Hispanics and offers mentorship programs in STEM. Classmates told me they offered free pizza. I'm really glad I was feeling hungry that day.They were welcoming and taught me the basics of the school system, how to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-this-is-an-excellent-resume-2013-11">create a résumé</a>, conduct interviews, and apply to grad school. It was a blessing to find them — suddenly, I had a community of people who wanted to help me succeed.<h2 id="e2632ea8-177e-49a0-b62a-e961cc3cb10a">A fellow student advised me to get as many internships as possible</h2>That was the best advice I received for navigating the US system. If I had just focused on the school material and not gained practical experience, I'm not sure I would've been able to find a job after graduating.I had multiple internships as a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recruiter-how-filter-applications-software-engineering-job-post-atl-interview-2024-5">software engineer</a> with local companies in data centers and startups via student work permits. These internships allowed me to gain experience and earn some money.I was extremely fortunate to count on my dad's support to cover any difference between my earnings and expenses.<h2 id="f9d3935c-b09d-48b2-9bb8-dfcaa291a51f">I went on to pursue a master's degree in computer science at Virginia Tech</h2>I sought universities with good computer science programs and scholarships or assistantships. Virginia Tech had an amazing program and great tenured professors, and it offered me an opportunity as a TA, so the decision was obvious.My teaching assistantship paid for all my tuition and also paid me around $20,000 each semester.<h2 id="c9fdec8c-c770-4f06-a7af-8a6bb5f26c51">I started applying for jobs in 2017</h2>I must've applied for over 100 of them. When you apply, employers ask you if they'll need to sponsor you at some point in the future, as not every employer can cover the financial costs associated with the process when the time comes.I received four offers from Microsoft, Verizon, Deutsche Bank, and Disney. Microsoft had the best offer and was willing to sponsor my visa.<h2 id="a93721cf-c9e0-46f2-bd96-3071c98b4800">I started as a software engineer with Microsoft in 2018</h2>When I started my job at Microsoft in Seattle, I could work thanks to a student work permit that lasts one year after graduation and is granted to all F-1 visa students. While working on the student permit, your employer helps you apply for an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/h1b-visa-lottery-changes-benefit-startups-hiring-immigrants-2024-2">H-1B</a> visa.I applied for a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/big-tech-green-card-applications-pause-2024-5">green card</a> after working on my H-1B visa for a year. By this point, I had lived in the US for about six years and created a whole life here, but the green card process was very painful.<h2 id="a2b4001a-c572-41e4-89cb-053b4e3c883a">The process makes life pretty horrible</h2>Having a work visa and going through the green card process are privileges, but it is very hard to separate the emotional component.There's no guarantee that you'll get to stay. If something goes wrong at any given time, you have to be ready to pack your bags and leave everything behind. I know some people who tried to get it three times and ran out of chances and had to return home.The first few years working were also difficult because I wasn't around anyone who looked like me. I wanted to grow and challenge myself, but at the same time, it made me wonder if I belonged, and doubt and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/managing-imposter-syndrome-when-you-are-the-boss-2021-10">imposter syndrome</a> crept in.Luckily, Microsoft paid for the attorneys in the green card process, and no cost came out of my pocket.<h2 id="1eb526a5-91be-4063-bec1-58a529e97297">I had to constantly review what they were putting on the application forms</h2>My key takeaway is that, even if you're working with lawyers, you still have to assume complete ownership of the application process and remember the lawyers supporting you, being human, can make mistakes.I was audited because some of the information that had been submitted was incorrect. It took me six to eight months to provide supplemental information and pass the audit.In 2022, I finally received my green card after three years.<h2 id="bd375841-9305-458d-bfb3-92ac255d1675">Last year, I decided to move into product management and took a new job at Starbucks</h2>In software engineering, you work on problems created by engineers for engineers. I wanted to learn how to build products that our customers actually love, so I ended up becoming a technical product manager.I love the US, I love the city I live in, and I love its people. I try to make it a better place by providing value through my career and volunteering in my local community.I even recently <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-couple-left-nyc-bought-vermont-house-slow-life-2024-9">bought a house</a> here — I don't have plans to move anywhere else.Want to share your story? Speaking at the opening of '<keyword id="694229" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="energy-revolution" source="Orion">Energy Revolution</keyword>: The <keyword id="3179546" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="adani-green-energy" source="Orion">Adani Green Energy</keyword> Gallery' at the Science Museum in London, Gautam Adani said his group's renewable energy arm, Adani Green Energy, is leading an energy transition that honours the commitment of taking care of the planet not just for this generation and the next but also for generations to come. "As the world's leading solar power developer and India's largest renewable energy company, we are taking very big steps," he said. "In Khavda, which is in the state of Gujarat, we are building the world's largest renewable energy park. It will have a generation capacity of 30 GW of energy - and it is incredibly big. Its area of 538 square kilometers is more than five times bigger than Paris." This is part of the aim to reach 45 GW of renewable energy by 2030, said Adani, the chairman of the apples-to-airport conglomerate. "This will be like providing clean energy to almost every house in England," he said. It currently has an operating renewable portfolio of over 9.5 GW and locked-in projects of up to 21.8 Gigawatt (GW). In Future Energy, technologies and the people behind them that are reimagining how energy is supplied and used are highlighted alongside historic artefacts which provide a longer view of the transition away from fossil fuels. Adani said museums are very important because they teach and inspire. "This new gallery is about more than just clean air - or about moving away from oil and gas. It is about the energy transition we need - this world needs - and it is about the revolution that is taking place in the world of energy." The gallery, he said, was special because it makes us think, dream and wish for change. At the centre of the gallery is Only Breath, a moving sculpture that signifies the power of nature to inspire technological change. Radiating outward from the centre are plinths which display vital low-carbon renewable energy technologies for the transition, from nuclear, hydrogen and solar to wind and tidal power, alongside remarkable historic innovations that remind us how major change is possible and that many of the technologies needed to make the low-carbon energy transition already exist. Objects in this section include a 7m long tidal turbine blade made by Scottish renewable energy company Orbital Marine Power and the first electric taxi, the Bersey cab, hailed by Londoners in 1897. The challenges of electrification, energy storage, and supply and demand are also explored, with visitors invited to play interactive games and use models that show how energy can be generated and distributed. Possible routes to low-carbon transport are featured, as well the decarbonisation of our buildings and construction industries, and visitors can learn about climate modelling and see instruments used to measure climate. Krishnan says that the rapid industrial expansion outpaces curriculum updates in colleges, resulting in a shortage of skilled talent. Most of the expertise that’s needed to drive India’s green transformation requires strong foundational STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills. “Currently, the key qualifications needed for such (green) roles would be an engineering degree with 5-10 years’ experience within the sustainability sector and experience of sustainability certification schemes,” says Ghatpande. In fact, most of the jobs require engineering degrees — both standalone or specialised to environment science. “The common degrees are Environmental Science or Engineering for roles in environmental conservation and management. Renewable Energy Engineering or Sustainable Energy Studies for careers in the renewable energy sector. Agricultural Science or Sustainable Agriculture for those interested in sustainable farming practices,” says Jaideep P Kewalramani, head of employability business and COO, TeamLease EdTech. Green certifications in vogue On top of the basic degrees, there are certifications as well. Green Building Certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for sustainable construction and architecture. Certifications in Environmental Management like ISO 14001, for professionals focusing on sustainability within organisations. For now, organisations which quickly need a lot of employees with green skills are developing talent by upskilling and reskilling the existing workforce on green technologies. “Also there is an active collaboration with academia in curating programs to create talent pipelines,” says Kumar. Added to that several online learning platforms offer tailored certificate courses and modules to help professionals kickstart their careers in the EV industry. “These courses often feature industry-relevant curricula, real-world projects, live mentorship by experts, and expert-led masterclasses,” says Krishnan. India’s green jobs are growing but are colleges ready to supply the talent?

Comet ZTF will come within 26 million miles (42 million kilometers) of our planet on Wednesday, about a third of the distance between the earth and the sun. The secret of the comet's green glow lies in a molecule called diatomic carbon, C2, Timothy Schmidt, a professor of chemistry at the University of New South Wales who studied the phenomenon, <a href="https://twitter.com/schmidtim/status/1619801389093519360?s=20&amp;t=WGRP63z9nxIay37btO-G4g" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in a tweet Sunday</a>. While we've known about the C2's green-glowing properties since 1930, it's only in 2021 that we discovered its final secret. Here's how.<div type="image" title="green comet in space" height="1688" width="2251" msid="97496579" hostid="261"></div>A comet is essentially a galactic snowball — it's a body made of ice and dust. As it approaches the sun, the heat turns the ice into gas creating an atmosphere around the comet called the coma. As that atmosphere is bombarded with radiation from the sun, the carbon-based molecules in the cloud are torn apart to create C2, a simple but very unstable molecule, which is easily excited.What that means is that the molecule can absorb some of the light from the sun, in the form of a photon, to put it in an excited state. But the universe likes order, so the molecule will do everything it can to return to its neutral state. To do so, it lets off the photon to release some of the energy from the light, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-microscope-pictures-nikon-small-world-photography-contest-2019-10">process called fluorescence</a>.When it's released from the C2, this photon happens to let off green light. <div type="image" title="01 fluorescent turtle embryo microscope photo teresa zgoda kugler nikon small world 2019 nsw2019" height="2163" width="2885" msid="97496581" hostid="261"></div>Physicists have been well aware of the mechanism behind the green glow for almost a century. But it was only in 2021 that a team, led by Schmidt, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/green-comet-ztf-what-look-like-see-photos-2023-1">figured out why the C2 did not keep glowing green</a> when it reached the tail of the comet. And it was a scientific breakthrough. The reason why it's so difficult to study this phenomenon on earth is because C2 is so unstable. The team started off with molecules made up of two carbon atoms and chloride (C2Cl4), which they blasted with a laser to rip the chloride from the molecule.They then bombarded the remaining C2 with concentrated light. What they found astonished them. The intense light bounced the C2 into an even more excitable state and broke the molecule apart.This was the first time anyone had ever observed this chemical reaction, Schmidt said in a <a href="https://newsroom.unsw.edu.au/news/science-tech/comets-heads-can-be-green-never-their-tails-after-90-years-we-finally-know-why" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release accompanying the findings</a> published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2021. Because of this, they found that the C2 has a very short life span under intense sunlight, which explains why the molecule stops glowing by the time it reaches the tail.

These 'green' ingredients rupture the microbes through site-specific binding. Impure air might make our life shorter to the extent that Indians lose 5-10 years of their lives because of air-borne contaminants leading to respiratory diseases, adversely affecting physical health as well as mental health, according to a report by University of Chicago. The research was supported by special grants from SERB during the challenging Covid-19 pandemic and SERB-Technology Translation Awards (SERB-TETRA) funds and a patent has been filed on this. Over continuous usage, the existing air filters become a breeding ground for captured germs. The growth of these germs clog the pores of the filter, reducing the life of the filters. Resuspension of these germs can infect people in the vicinity. The novel anti-microbial air filters were tested at the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories and were found to deactivate SARS-CoV-2 (delta variant) with an efficiency of 99.24 per cent. This technology was transferred to AiRTH, a startup that is replacing the existing germ-growing air filters with germ-destroying air filters for commercialisation, said the Ministry of Science and Technology on Saturday. As this innovation holds promise to develop antimicrobial filters that can prevent endemics caused by air-borne pathogens, a patent was granted in 2022. These novel antimicrobial filters in our ACs, central ducts and air purifiers can play a crucial role in our fight against air pollution and mitigate the spread of air-borne pathogens like coronaviruses. In order to enhance their commitment to ESG principles, HDFC Bank has formed an ESG committee. This committee consists of senior members from key departments within the bank and is chaired by a member of the senior management team. The ESG committee is responsible for developing and implementing the bank's ESG strategy, as well as establishing a roadmap to achieve the set targets. They report to the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) committee of the Board of Directors, providing updates on the bank's ESG strategy and progress. kindlife, a beauty and wellness platform which launched in 2020, has a strong ESG focus. “Our ESG goals are only achievable with a strong team who works tirelessly to bring our vision to life. We work closely with internationally renowned advisors armed with over 20 years of experience. We’ve worked closely with the World Bank and government bodies in the sustainability and clean energy space,” says Radhika Ghai, founder and CEO, kindlife. They have a team of two consultants who are guiding them with assessing their impact across various parameters and projects. They are also gearing towards their next critical goal of 100% carbon neutrality and a sustainable score for brands and products for which they are working closely with Sishir Garemella, a clean energy and climate technology expert. Talent in demand ESG jobs do not necessarily require skills in the sustainability domain. “Green jobs or jobs in the ESG space, can be found in a wide range of industries, from renewable energy and clean technology to sustainable agriculture and waste management. There are three categories of green jobs based on their degree of dependence on green skills,” says Manu Saigal, director, general staffing, Adecco India. Jobs that require green skills: These are jobs that cannot be performed without specialized knowledge of environmental sustainability. Examples include renewable energy technicians, environmental engineers, and sustainability consultants. Jobs with significant potential to create and hone green skills: “These are jobs that are not necessarily focused on environmental sustainability but have the potential to develop green skills,” says Saigal. Examples include architects and construction workers who build energy-efficient buildings and farmers who use sustainable agriculture practices. Jobs that do not require green skills: “These are jobs that are not specifically related to environmental sustainability but may contribute to sustainability indirectly,” says Saigal. Examples include accountants who work for green businesses and marketing professionals who promote environmentally friendly products. The crucial aspect of ESG is now focused on proper data analysis, collection, reporting, investigation, and filing. The typical structure involves using various frameworks to collect and analyze data, which requires hiring individuals at entry-level and mid-level positions with backgrounds in computer science, mathematics, or engineering. ESG data is considered a type of alternative data that can be utilized in the analysis of companies. As a result, investors and hedge funds are utilizing it to identify investment opportunities with lower risk by assessing a company's favourable environmental and ethical factors. Organizations are also looking to appoint applicants who have qualifications in energy, social environment, sustainable business management and environmental studies, wind and solar energies. And one important subject could also be economics and law. A lot of certification courses are available in this space today.
