Research Institute (<keyword id="20370739" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cmfri" source="keywords">CMFRI</keyword>) have successfully deciphered the genome of the <keyword id="23138296" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="asian-green-mussel" source="Orion">Asian green mussel</keyword> (Perna viridis), a discovery poised to revolutionise the understanding of this vital <keyword id="662896" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="marine-species" source="Orion">marine species</keyword>. This is the first-ever <keyword id="184804" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chromosome" source="Orion">chromosome</keyword> level genome sequencing of a marine invertebrate species from India.<br /><br />Earlier, CMFRI had come out with a similar genome finding for Indian oil sardine. The Asian green mussel, Kallummakkaya in local parlance, is an important aquaculture species in the family Mytilidae contributing substantially to molluscan aquaculture.<br /><br />CMFRI's research found that the mussel's genome contains 723.49 Mb in size and is anchored into 15 chromosomes, according to a CMFRI release here on Thursday. The research was published in the journal <em>Scientific Data</em> by Nature Group.<br /><br />"The development will be a game-changer in boosting sustainable mussel aquaculture in the country, as this research will help gain insights into its growth, reproduction and disease resistance", said Dr Grinson George, Director of CMFRI. The findings will benefit the aquaculture sector by improving genomic selection and breeding practices, leading to enhanced productivity and resilience in fisheries, he added.<br /><br />A team of researchers from CMFRI led by Principal Scientist Dr Sandhya Sukumaran carried out this study with funding support from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), New Delhi. The team includes Dr A Gopalakrishnan, V G Vysakh, Dr Wilson Sebastian, Dr Lalitha Hari Dharani, Dr Akhilesh Pandey, Dr Abishek Kumar and Dr J K Jena. According to scientists, this will help develop new strategies to combat diseases in the mussel.<br /><br />"Genomic investigations on this species are vital to understand genes, gene combinations and signaling pathways leading to the parasitic diseases, which constitute a major threat to Asian green mussel aquaculture in India causing substantial mortalities in farms," said Dr Sandhya Sukumaran. According to the scientists, the genome assembly of green mussels will emerge as a valuable tool for exploring <keyword id="6355291" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cancer" source="Orion">cancer</keyword> mechanisms and developing new therapeutic strategies.<br /><br />"A total of 49654 protein-coding genes were identified, including 634 genes associated with the cancer pathway and 408 genes associated with viral carcinogenesis. This indicates that this species is a novel model organism for cancer research," Sukumaran said.<br /><br />This advancement promises to significantly enhance our understanding of cancer pathways and facilitate the discovery of novel treatments, she added. Apart from its aquaculture prospects, Asian green mussels play a vital role as a bio-monitor as it is capable of accumulating heavy metals and other environmental pollutants in large quantities. Understanding the genome assembly will provide valuable information about the genomic pathways involved in response to pollutants.<br /><br />"The genetic markers to be developed from this research could be used to monitor pollutants in aquatic bodies, a significant milestone in safeguarding the aquatic environment," Sandhya said.<br /><br />Scientists believe that the genome decoding of this species would enhance knowledge regarding the effect of environmental pollutants on biological systems, as this bivalve is adaptable to local environmental stressors like variations in pH, temperature, salinity and air exposure.

Fink said that the next 1,000 unicorns — startups with a valuation over $1 billion — won't be more search engines or social media companies, but rather ones "that help the world decarbonize and make the energy transition affordable for all consumers."</p><p>"We need to be honest about the fact that green products often come at a higher cost today," Fink said. "Bringing down this green premium will be essential for an orderly and just transition. With the unprecedented amount of capital looking for new ideas, incumbents need to be clear about their pathway succeeding in a net zero economy. And it's not just startups that can and will disrupt industries. Bold incumbents can and must do it too."</p><p>The disruption Fink referred to is one that is not only on businesses' minds — President Joe <keyword id="60973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="biden" source="Orion">Biden</keyword>'s administration has begun preparing for risks associated with the transition to a carbon-free economy. Insider reported in November that transitioning to a green economy <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-climate-change-crisis-protect-retirement-savings-2-main-risks-2021-11">poses two risks to Americans</a>: a physical risk, referring to climate events that could damage infrastructure, and a transition risk, referring to costs incurred during the shift away from investments in carbon-focused economies like coal infrastructure toward clean energy, like wind and solar.</p><p>Biden <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-climate-change-crisis-protect-savings-retirements-pensions-banks-economy-2021-10">unveiled a plan</a> in October outlining strategies to protect Americans' retirements and savings from those risks — one of which included disclosing climate-related financial risks in investment decisions, which Fink recommended businesses do.</p><p>"We focus on sustainability not because we're environmentalists, but because we are capitalists and fiduciaries to our clients," Fink said. "That requires understanding how companies are adjusting their businesses for the massive changes the economy is undergoing."</p><p>Still, even if companies do increasingly focus on decisions to help the climate, meeting Biden's goal to cut carbon emissions in half by 2030 requires government aid. The president proposed a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-climate-plan-biggest-investment-reconciliation-glasgow-summit-2021-10">$555 billion investment</a> in his Build Back Better agenda to meet his climate goals, but that agenda is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/democrats-bench-build-back-better-face-obstacles-with-voting-rights-2022-1">currently stalled</a> in the Senate, jeopardizing progress in transitioning to a green economy.</p><p>Fink said government aid is vital.</p><p>"Capitalism has the power to shape society and act as a powerful catalyst for change," he said. "But businesses can't do this alone, and they cannot be the climate police. That will not be a good outcome for society. We need governments to provide clear pathways and a consistent taxonomy for sustainability policy, regulation, and disclosure across <keyword id="11893875" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="markets" source="Orion">markets</keyword>."</p>

<p>Americans often ask why unauthorized immigrants living in the United States didn't find some way to obtain lawful status.</p><p>"Get in line" is a command often repeated, as it's assumed that if aspiring immigrants wait long enough or try hard enough, they can lawfully reside in the country.</p><p>The sentiment has been echoed by both Democratic and Republican lawmakers for years, and the Trump administration has repeated it during its ongoing immigration crackdown.</p><p>"We have a lawful system of immigration. You should do what over 1 million other immigrants do each year, wait your turn and come lawfully," Attorney General Jeff Sessions said <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/speech/attorney-general-jeff-sessions-delivers-remarks-media-availability-el-paso-texas">last week at a speech</a> in Texas.</p><p>But that's not always as easy as it sounds. For many would-be immigrants, there is no "turn" they can wait for, and no line to stand in.</p><p>The US immigration system is designed to only admit newcomers who fall into very specific categories. 'Wait your turn': The incredibly complicated process behind legal immigration to the US

But some, including Kansas Secretary of State and Trump adviser Kris Kobach, had a different take.</p><p>"I would suggest go home and get in line, come into the United States legally, then get a green card, then become a citizen," <a href="https://www.mediamatters.org/video/2017/09/05/msnbcs-hallie-jackson-shoots-down-breitbarts-kris-kobach-calling-daca-recipients-criminals/217837">Kobach told MSNBC's Hallie Jackson</a> Tuesday. "Do it the right way like so many hundreds of thousands of your countrymen are trying to do. What's wrong with that? Residency, among other things, would give potentially hundreds of thousands of farm workers the freedom to leave an abusive employer, something effectively denied them under the H-2A program, where visas are tied to a company sponsor (<a href="https://www.wilsoncenter.org/article/h-2a-program-2020">over 200,000</a> such visas are issued each year, the vast majority to Mexican nationals).</p><p>"This bill is fundamentally different than what any other president has ever done in emancipating farm workers so they can escape pervasive fear and behave like free men and women," United Farm Workers President Teresa Romero, a member of Biden's transition team, said in a statement.</p><h2>A reprieve for Dreamers</h2><p>As The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/biden-immigration-plan/2021/01/18/f0526824-59a8-11eb-a976-bad6431e03e2_story.html">reported on Tuesday</a>, the "centerpiece" of the Biden administration plan is an eight-year path to citizenship for millions of undocumented Americans, providing them temporary status for five years and then a green card for three; those who pass a background check and pay their taxes would ultimately receive citizenship.</p><p>In addition to farm workers, those brought to the United States as children, as well as adults who fled natural and human disasters in Central America and elsewhere, would also be eligible to immediately receive permanent residency.</p><p>Biden is also poised to issue a slew of executive orders reversing his predecessor's more controversial policies, such as the de facto "Muslim ban" prohibiting travelers from countries such as Iran, Iraq, Libya, and Somalia. The Post reported that he is also likely to reinstate a program providing temporary legal status to minors from Central America.</p><h2>The real-world impact of Biden's proposal, should it become law</h2><p>Ruben, an 18-year-old college student in Washington, is one of five children born to farm workers who came to the US from Mexico (Insider is withholding his last name due to parents' undocumented status). He spent summers picking apples and blueberries - backbreaking work that has led him to pursue a career in medicine.</p><p>He's relieved that the Trump era is over. Former President Barack Obama may have deported millions, but Ruben said he did not demonize and instill fear in millions quite like his successor did, "stereotyping Latino immigrants and just yelling out whatever he thought."</p><p>"My grandma was here and she would watch the news every day, "Ruben said, "and she would just panic. We just told her to stop watching."</p><p>Ruben campaigned for Biden, spending over a month in Arizona knocking doors in a state where the Latino vote delivered a knockout to Trump's hopes for a second term. He's hopeful that the stress of the last four years can give way to some optimism, purchased with his contribution to getting out the vote. For him, there's the chance that his family, including an older brother who is a DACA recipient, could stop living in fear.</p><p>His parents, however, in the US since 2001, have lived through two rounds of presidents pledging to make the immigration system a little more humane. Still, Biden's proposal, the most liberal in decades - with two houses of Congress to clear before becoming law - is to them no less than a potential godsend.</p><p>"They're kind of shocked," Ruben said. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>The UK and EU are set to enter a new phase of detailed Brexit negotiations as hopes of a prospect deal increase.</strong></li><li><strong>Ambassadors from member states gave Michel Barnier, the EU's chief negotiator, the green light to enter into detailed discussions on Friday.</strong></li><li>The development came after UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Irish counterpart, Leo Varadkar, agreed Thursday that they could see the "pathway to a deal" on Brexit after a lengthy meeting.</li><li><strong>The meeting marked a dramatic, positive shift in tone after talks appeared close to collapse.</strong></li></ul><p>LONDON - Boris Johnson's government is set to enter intensive "tunnel" negotiations with the EU over a possible Brexit deal ahead of a crunch summit in Brussels next weekend, in a major boost for the prospect of an agreement before the October 31 deadline.</p><p>The tunnel is EU jargon for line-by-line negotiations held by a small team of officials from the UK and EU which are conducted in complete secrecy, meaning that offers and concessions are not disclosed. </p><p>Ambassadors from the 27 remaining EU member states gave the green light for Michel Barnier to open the new phase of accelerated talks on Friday, according to multiple reports.</p><p>Donald Tusk, the EU council president, said on Friday he had told the prime minister to present his Brexit proposals to the EU by next Thursday but added that "positive signals" were now emerging from London.</p><p>The development came after Johnson met with Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar on Thursday, who offered a strikingly upbeat assessment of the chances that the UK can strike a deal by next Thursday's EU summit.</p><p>While the details of Johnson's latest proposals have not emerged from the meeting, Varadkar said: "I had a very good meeting today with the prime minister and our teams together - very positive and very promising."</p><p>"I am now absolutely convinced that both Ireland and Britain want there to be an agreement that's in the interests of Ireland, the UK, and EU as a whole," he added.</p><p>"And I do see a pathway towards an agreement in the coming weeks."</p><p>Johnson did not make a public comment after the meeting in an apparent attempt to rebuild trust between the leaders, which has soured in recent weeks, and avoid derailing any breakthroughs, but Downing Street echoed Varadkar's claim that the leaders had identified the "pathway to a deal."</p><p>The pound rose 2% against the dollar to $1.246 on the news as the focus shifted to Brussels, where Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay arrived for discussions with Michel Barnier, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator.</p><p>While some progress does appear to have been made at the meeting, the EU remains far apart from the UK's position, with customs proposals by far the biggest sticking point.</p><p>Johnson called last week for the Irish backstop to be replaced with a plan that would see Northern Ireland remain in the European single market for goods but leave the customs union along with the rest of the UK.</p><p>But Brussels has said it will not accept the proposal on the grounds that it would require customs checks on the island of Ireland, which it says would threaten the Irish peace settlement.</p><p>Varadkar's words Thursday indicated that Johnson might have shifted his red lines and could now be willing to keep Northern Ireland in the customs union.</p><p>But any concession that would keep Northern Ireland in the customs union would cause a political storm within the Conservative Party, and it is unclear whether there would be a majority in Parliament for such a deal.</p><p class="tagline">Our Brexit Insider Facebook group is the best place for up-to-date news and analysis about Britain's departure from the EU, direct from Business Insider's political reporters. The US's visa and green-card backlogs alone ensure that many prospective immigrants face painstakingly long waiting periods before being admitted to the country or given permanent residency - a huge barrier in attempting to help consecutive family members migrate to the US.</p><p>Family-based immigration is not an immediate process, and it can take years, or even decades, for immigrant visas to be made available and processing to occur. Then, once the family member arrives in the US on an immigrant visa, it takes <a href="https://www.uscis.gov/greencard/green-card-processes-procedures">additional time to receive a green card</a> that denotes permanent residency. After that, permanent residents typically have to wait <a href="https://www.uscis.gov/us-citizenship/citizenship-through-naturalization/path-us-citizenship">five years</a> before they may apply to become US citizens.</p><p>Trump's tweet about chain migration on Friday could signal a new bump in the road for a potential immigration deal with Democrats. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/daca-lindsey-graham-dick-durbin-urge-action-on-dream-act-trump-immigration-news-2017-9">bipartisan DREAM Act</a> recently reintroduced in Congress by Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin and Republican Sen. New Delhi, Nov 14 () Union Steel Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stressed on the need to make India self-sufficient in high grade steel and sought collective efforts of the industry to make the sector future-ready.
<p> Metals, including steel, continue to play a vital role in building India a modern economy, the minister said, adding that there is a strong positive correlation between steel usage and a nation's economic growth.
</p><p> "He has appealed to the delegates to embrace challenge of producing high grade steel for greater self-sufficiency. Steel sector must be future-ready to embrace the change and leverage innovation. Professionals from the metallurgical fraternity will have an important role to play in achieving this quantum leap and creating green pathways to make the Indian steel sector future-ready," a statement quoted Pradhan as saying.
</p><p> The National Steel Policy 2017 was formulated to create a more self-sufficient and globally competitive steel industry with a crude steel capacity of 300 million tonnes by 2030, he said.
</p><p> The steel sector will have a key role to play in the making of a New India envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the minister said. 
</p><p> "The next trajectory of growth, fuelled by government's key focus on building infrastructure for future, creating smart cities, industrial corridors and so forth will further boost steel consumption."

Part-playground, part-outdoor classroom, the learning gardens serve as spaces where students learn about the science of growing fruits and veggies - and that they can taste great, too.</span></p><p><span>Now Musk is taking his nonprofit national and renaming it "Big Green." In April, 100 schools in Detroit, Michigan will break ground on learning gardens. The Detroit project is backed by $5 million in funding from donors including <a href="https://www.gfs.com/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?hl=en&amp;q=https://www.gfs.com/en&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1516214544726000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHwk1hAJ9cxB6wgjt_4PJhYBeCWag">Gordon Food Service</a>, Pathways Foundation, and philanthropist Carole Ilitch.</span></p><p><span>Musk's team also plans to expand Big Green to four other cities, including Colorado Springs, Colorado; Louisville, Kentucky; Long Beach, California; and San Antonio, Texas. The $25 million effort could see 100 more gardens built in each location by the end of 2020.</span></p><p><span>In an interview with Business Insider, Musk explained the genesis of the nonprofit's new vision.</span></p><p><span>"As we started to grow, we realized we needed a name that talked to the importance of scale, the importance of reaching all kids of America," he said. </span></p><p><span>"And then on the 'green' side, we wanted to teach kids about food, but also to pay homage to the fact that we're getting them outside; we're getting them connected to nature and to understand the way the Earth and climate works - and really give them an education beyond food. We didn't want to pigeonhole ourselves in food. On average, participating students make $400 a year, Musk said.</span></p><p>Big Green now also has a national board, which includes Valor Equity Partners founder Antonio Gracias, Planet Heritage cofounder Cindy Mercer, and Memphis Superintendent Dorsey Hopson. <span>Since 2011, the initiative has received funding from mega-corporations like Wells Fargo, Walmart, and Chipotle, which Musk believes will help the nonprofit scale. He added that Big Green is open to working with independent or local businesses as well. </span></p><p><span>Musk hopes that Big Green will help fix the way American kids eat. Since junk food is often inexpensive and "funneled to low-income communities," he believes that inaccessible fresh produce is a socioeconomic and human rights issue.</span></p><p><span>"Kids today are totally disconnected from real food. The industrial food that we create is high-calorie, low in nutrients, doesn't taste good, and shipped from thousands of miles away. And we've been creating a massive amount of obesity and diabetes," he said.</span></p><p><span> "In some low-income communities, nearly <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/07/nyregion/07stamps.html?_r=1">40%</a> of kids will go into kindergarten [overweight or] obese. You also forgot to thank President Trump for the shot!" </p><p>Republican lawmakers have focused their messaging on the recent surge in migrants crossing the <keyword id="399516" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="US-Mexico-border">US-Mexico border</keyword>, returning to former President Donald Trump's anti-immigrant playbook. They're attempting to raise alarm about "super-spreader caravans" of immigrants in much the same way that Trump wildly exaggerated the threat of violent "caravans" of criminals looking to invade the country.</p><p>And they're blaming Biden's reversal of Trump's harsh anti-immigrant policies for the influx in unaccompanied migrant children who've crossed the border in recent weeks. Thousands of migrant children have been detained under Biden's new administration and the surge is causing delays in transferring the kids from federal facilities meant for adults to Department of Health and Human Services shelters. </p><p>The Biden administration is loosening Trump's restrictions on refugees and asylum seekers, expanding family-based immigration, creating a pathway to citizenship and permanent residence for millions of undocumented foreign workers, and reducing mass deportations. Biden has also reversed Trump's "remain in Mexico" policy, which barred refugees and asylum seekers from staying in the US while their claims are processed and forced thousands into dangerous and squalid camps in Mexico. </p><p>White House chief of staff Ron Klain said recently that the Biden administration "inherited a real mess" on the border and seeks to implement a more "humane" set of policies to deal with it. </p><p>Biden pledged during a national address on Thursday night to make COVID-19 vaccines available to all adult Americans by May 1. And he said he expects the country to return to something resembling normal life by July 4, when he'll encourage small family gatherings. </p><p>"July 4th with your loved ones is the goal," the president said.</p><p>While Greene claimed that undocumented immigrants aren't "waiting until July 4th" to gather, she and other Republican lawmakers have aggressively resisted and undermined federal health officials' guidelines on gatherings, mask-wearing, social distancing, and other COVID-19 mitigation practices. Greene has called masks "<a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/marjorie-taylor-greene-incoming-house-member-says-masks-are-oppressive-covid-19-surge/">oppressive</a>" and long called for states to fully reopen. She's held her own gatherings, including her election victory party and town halls, with little regard for virus safety measures. </p>

Tom Cotton of Arkansas and David Perdue of Georgia, who introduced an early version of the legislation in February.</p><p>Trump said the bill would take aim at programs that predominantly admit low-skilled immigrants, which he said has displaced American workers and depressed wages. He added that the legislation is intended to favor green-card applicants who can speak English, financially support themselves, and demonstrate their skills, which he said would "reduce poverty, increase wages, and save taxpayers billions and billions."</p><p>"It will restore the sacred bonds of trust between America and its citizens," he added of the legislation, which is named the Reforming American Immigration for Strong Employment (RAISE) Act.</p><p>Cotton and Perdue's <a href="https://www.cotton.senate.gov/?p=press_release&amp;id=603">early version</a> of the legislation had proposed a 50% reduction in annual immigration over the next 10 years, allotting green cards for just 539,958 immigrants in 2027 compared to the 1,051,031 that received them in 2015.</p><p>The initial bill, which stalled in the Senate for several months and is being reintroduced with certain changes, called for the elimination of the "diversity visa," would allocate 50,000 visas annually to people from countries with low immigration rates to the US and place a cap on refugee admissions at 50,000 per year.</p><p>The bill also proposed to eliminate certain pathways to family-based immigration, stipulating that only spouses and minor children of US citizens and permanent residents would be eligible for green cards.</p><p>The legislation has already received significant support from White House officials such as senior adviser Stephen Miller, who helped Cotton and Perdue craft the bill, and chief strategist Steve Bannon, who has long <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/politics/wp/2017/02/01/steve-bannon-once-complained-that-20-percent-of-the-country-is-made-up-of-immigrants-it-isnt/">decried legal immigration levels</a> and argued that an influx of Asian immigrants has overwhelmed America's schools and technology sector.</p><p>Democrats are unlikely to support a bill that would dramatically reduce immigration levels and cap refugee admissions, but it's unclear how much support it could attract from Republicans.</p><p>Sens. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://pictures.reuters.com/"> Reuters/Darren Staples</a></span></p><p class="caption">Prime Minister David Cameron.</p></div><p></p></div></div>British Prime Minister David Cameron is going to let his Conservative Party's politicians campaign any way they want when the country votes for whether to stay or leave the European Union in a referendum..</p><p><a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-eu-referendum-35221167">The BBC reported </a>that Cameron will announce sometime on Tuesday he has given his ministers a green light for campaigning for a Brexit if they want to - something he is staunchly against - after he has finished trying to "seal a better deal" for Britain within the EU.</p><p>It was highly anticipated that Cameron would cave in to ministers who are erring on the side of a Brexit - Britain leaving the EU. An unnamed senior minister in Cameron's cabinet confirmed to <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/eu-referendum-cameron-reportedly-allows-ministers-to-campaign-for-a-brexit-2015-12">The Sun newspaper that Cameron gave assurances to him and others that they will be "free to take sides."</a></p><p>However that source said that politicians would be able to start campaigning once the referendum date is announced. </p><p>In January 2014, <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> Chancellor George Osborne said the Tories were determined to deliver on the promise of a referendum but they would prefer to stay within the EU and negotiate "a better deal."</p><p>"Our determination is clear: to deliver the reform and then let the people decide," Osborne said in a speech at a Tory party conference on January 14. "It is the status quo which condemns the people of Europe to an ongoing economic crisis and continuing decline. He said at the time that "nothing is certain in life or in Brussels but there is a pathway to a deal in February.
