A day ahead of the final Budget presentation, India released the <keyword id="20613906" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="economic-survey" source="keywords">Economic Survey</keyword> 2023-2024, outlining a plethora of optimistic — and some bittersweet — indicators of the health of the nation’s economy. When you consider the climate-related aspects of the report, there’s a ton of good news: we have achieved massive strides in clean power generation, while cutting out a ton of dirty emissions from our products.<br /><br />However, scroll down to the bottom of the report, and you find a scathing criticism of the “western” approach to climate change. Here's a closer look at why, and what clues do such narratives hold about India's <keyword id="22513472" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="environmental-strategy" source="keywords">environmental strategy</keyword> in coming years.<br /><h2>Problems with the “Western way”</h2>The major criticism, as per the survey, is that the Western approach to climate change is far too alarmist. They argue that this “one-size-fits-all” attitude often fails to account for the diverse needs of countries like India. To that end, it also points out that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) promotes "accelerated and equitable mitigation pathways" that don't always align with the developmental priorities of <keyword id="20353838" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="developing-nations" source="keywords">developing nations</keyword>.<br /><br />Additionally, the report notes that Western solutions often prioritise market-based strategies to sustain high consumption levels rather than addressing the root issue of overconsumption. The survey emphasises that <keyword id="20224417" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sustainable-living" source="keywords">sustainable living</keyword> is deeply ingrained in <keyword id="19983840" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-culture" source="keywords">Indian culture</keyword>, which contrasts sharply with the consumption-driven lifestyle prevalent in the West. This focus on high consumption misses the mark, as it doesn't consider the environmental impact of such lifestyles.<br /><br />And for the most part, this bit is true; Indian history is enriched with traditions that emphasise the conservation of nature. As <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1155/2017/3828609">per estimates</a>, religious practices have preserved an estimated 1.5 lakh sacred groves across India, and natural conservation efforts can be traced back to the time of Ashoka.<br />    <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111925936" title="Economic Survey 2023-24: Where does India stand on the employment, and what&amp;#39;s next?" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>Therefore, it may not be entirely inaccurate to say that in India, sustainability isn't a new concept; it's a way of life. Traditional Indian practices like using reusable materials, upcycling, and embracing minimalism have always promoted sustainability. The survey highlights that these practices are now threatened by Western capitalist ideals that equate consumption with progress. By returning to these roots, India can offer a model of sustainability that's both practical and culturally relevant.<br /><h2>Fixation on technical solutions</h2>The Economic Survey also critiques the Western obsession with high-tech solutions, such as solar-powered buildings and electric vehicles. These solutions require substantial financial and infrastructural resources that many developing countries simply don't have. Moreover, they often overlook the broader environmental impact and lifecycle costs associated with urban sprawl and high-density living. As per the report, India is the only G20 country on track to meet the 2°C warming commitment under the Paris Agreement, with significant investments in <keyword id="19895602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="renewable-energy" source="keywords">renewable energy</keyword>, particularly solar power.<br /><h2><keyword id="20269618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mission-LiFE" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Mission LiFE" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Mission LiFE">Mission LiFE</keyword>: A sustainable initiative</h2>In order to help reinforce and rejuvenate the Indian way, the survey highlights Prime Minister Modi's Lifestyle for Environment initiative, or Mission LiFE. This initiative underscores individual responsibility in combating climate change, drawing from ancient Indian philosophy that advocates for a naturally sustainable lifestyle. By focusing on small, individual actions that collectively lead to significant environmental benefits, Mission LiFE contrasts sharply with the Western top-down policy approach. Why did the latest Economic Survey of India heavily shun the ‘Western ways’ of climate action?

<ul class="summary-list"><li>HBO and DC Studios announced that Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler will lead the "Lanterns" TV show.</li><li>The gritty mystery will follow two "Green Lantern" characters, John Stewart and Hal Jordan.</li></ul><p>HBO and DC Studios announced that Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler will lead the upcoming "Lanterns" TV show — the first major "Green Lantern" project since <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/all-of-ryan-reynolds-movies-ranked-by-critics">Ryan Reynolds</a>' widely panned 2011 movie.</p><p>In the comics, the Green Lantern Corps is an intergalactic police force, with each Lantern working to keep the peace across the universe.</p><p>Reynolds played the most commonly known version of the hero, Hal Jordan, in an origin story that made only $227 million against a $200 million budget, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt1133985/news/">Box Office Mojo</a>.</p><p>Warner Bros. scheduled a "Green Lantern Corps" movie for 2020 as part of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zack-snyder-justice-league-unwatchable-joyless-joss-whedon-2022-7">Zack Snyder</a>'s DC Extended Universe, but it never materialized.</p><p>Producer Greg Berlanti also tried<strong> </strong>to create a TV series on HBO Max, but those plans were canceled when James Gunn and Peter Safran became co-chairmen of DC Studios in December 2022.</p><p>The "Lanterns" TV series seems to have a better chance of getting off the ground now that it has found its two leads.</p><h2 id="94b73ed8-fd6f-4b4f-8cac-4d9e078ca5df"><strong>"Lanterns" will explore a "dark, Earth-based mystery."</strong></h2><div type="image" title="green lantern" height="862" width="1136" msid="114124530" hostid="261" sizebytes="120088"></div><p>The description of the eight-episode series, which was released in June, suggests that "Lanterns" will blend the cosmic scale of its characters with a gritty storyline.</p><p>It reads: "The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland."</p><p>When Gunn and Safran announced their plans for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dc-movie-tv-release-date-schedule-james-gunn-plan-2023-1">their rebooted DC Universe</a> in January 2023, they said that "Lanterns" is inspired by the dark crime drama, "True Detective."</p><p>"This is a story of a couple of Green Lanterns: John Stewart and Hal Jordan, and we have a few other Lanterns peppered in there, but this is really a terrestrial-based TV show, which is almost like 'True Detective' with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops watching over precinct Earth. The outlet also reported that HBO planned to start filming "Lanterns" in January 2025.</p><p>In early October, Gunn confirmed on X that "Rebel Ridge" actor Aaron Pierre had been cast as John Stewart.</p><p>He wrote: "Welcome to DC, Aaron Pierre. After a long and grueling series of auditions I am absolutely sure we've found an incredible John Stewart."</p> <p>"Firefly" and "The Rookie" actor Nathan Fillion will appear in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/james-gunn-superman-legacy-cast-2023-7">2025's "Superman"</a> movie as Guy Gardner, another member of the Green Lantern Corps.</p><p>So it's possible that he'll also show up in the "Lanterns" TV series, given that he works for the same organization as Pierre and Chandler's characters.</p>

The following has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>I grew up in a small beach town called Manta in Ecuador with my dad, mom, and two sisters. My dad always taught me that there was nothing I couldn't do.</p><p>I became interested in computers and technology because of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/playstation-plus">PlayStation</a>. Sometimes, I couldn't finish a game because the dialogue and options were in English, so I became very motivated to learn computers and English.</p><h2 id="aea16f41-f4aa-4e6e-926f-62684543751d"><strong>After graduating from high school, I decided I wanted to pursue my education in the US</strong></h2><p>To apply to a university in the US, you must pass either the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/do-colleges-require-standardized-testing-sat-admissions-what-it-means-2024-3">SAT or ACT</a>. I bought an ACT book and prepared for many months to ensure I could get a good score.</p><p>I knew I couldn't attend college in the US without a scholarship, so I began investigating scholarships and programs. I found the University of South Florida in Tampa offered a scholarship for students from Latin American countries that would get me a student visa.</p><p>I was awarded the scholarship, which allowed me to receive a stipend of $1,000 a year to cover textbooks and resident status for tuition purposes.</p><h2 id="1ea4606f-8ed1-484d-bf1a-b39e05b12a66"><strong>I began a bachelor's degree in computer engineering in 2012</strong></h2><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-and-uk-life-biggest-differences-after-moving-home-space-2024-7">Coming to the US</a> at 17 was very challenging. It was my first time leaving home, and there was a lot I didn't understand about the US. I had no close friends or family here for support or guidance.</p><p>It was also very exciting, as it was an opportunity to push myself. It took some time to get used to classes in English. I studied hard from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.</p><h2 id="d640f046-61e6-4e77-9c39-669f1b3f751d"><strong>In my second semester, I found the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers</strong></h2><p>The SHPE is a national organization that empowers Hispanics and offers mentorship programs in STEM. Classmates told me they offered free pizza. I'm really glad I was feeling hungry that day.</p><p>They were welcoming and taught me the basics of the school system, how to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-this-is-an-excellent-resume-2013-11">create a résumé</a>, conduct interviews, and apply to grad school. It was a blessing to find them — suddenly, I had a community of people who wanted to help me succeed.</p><h2 id="e2632ea8-177e-49a0-b62a-e961cc3cb10a"><strong>A fellow student advised me to get as many internships as possible</strong></h2><p>That was the best advice I received for navigating the US system. If I had just focused on the school material and not gained practical experience, I'm not sure I would've been able to find a job after graduating.</p><p>I had multiple internships as a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recruiter-how-filter-applications-software-engineering-job-post-atl-interview-2024-5">software engineer</a> with local companies in data centers and startups via student work permits. These internships allowed me to gain experience and earn some money.</p><p>I was extremely fortunate to count on my dad's support to cover any difference between my earnings and expenses.</p><h2 id="f9d3935c-b09d-48b2-9bb8-dfcaa291a51f"><strong>I went on to pursue a master's degree in computer science at Virginia Tech</strong></h2><p>I sought universities with good computer science programs and scholarships or assistantships. Virginia Tech had an amazing program and great tenured professors, and it offered me an opportunity as a TA, so the decision was obvious.</p><p>My teaching assistantship paid for all my tuition and also paid me around $20,000 each semester.</p><h2 id="c9fdec8c-c770-4f06-a7af-8a6bb5f26c51">I started applying for jobs in 2017</h2><p>I must've applied for over 100 of them. When you apply, employers ask you if they'll need to sponsor you at some point in the future, as not every employer can cover the financial costs associated with the process when the time comes.</p><p>I received four offers from Microsoft, Verizon, Deutsche Bank, and Disney. Microsoft had the best offer and was willing to sponsor my visa.</p><h2 id="a93721cf-c9e0-46f2-bd96-3071c98b4800"><strong>I started as a software engineer with Microsoft in 2018</strong></h2><p>When I started my job at Microsoft in Seattle, I could work thanks to a student work permit that lasts one year after graduation and is granted to all F-1 visa students. While working on the student permit, your employer helps you apply for an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/h1b-visa-lottery-changes-benefit-startups-hiring-immigrants-2024-2">H-1B</a> visa.</p><p>I applied for a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/big-tech-green-card-applications-pause-2024-5">green card</a> after working on my H-1B visa for a year. By this point, I had lived in the US for about six years and created a whole life here, but the green card process was very painful.</p><h2 id="a2b4001a-c572-41e4-89cb-053b4e3c883a"><strong>The process makes life pretty horrible</strong></h2><p>Having a work visa and going through the green card process are privileges, but it is very hard to separate the emotional component.</p><p>There's no guarantee that you'll get to stay. If something goes wrong at any given time, you have to be ready to pack your bags and leave everything behind. I know some people who tried to get it three times and ran out of chances and had to return home.</p><p>The first few years working were also difficult because I wasn't around anyone who looked like me. I wanted to grow and challenge myself, but at the same time, it made me wonder if I belonged, and doubt and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/managing-imposter-syndrome-when-you-are-the-boss-2021-10">imposter syndrome</a> crept in.</p><p>Luckily, Microsoft paid for the attorneys in the green card process, and no cost came out of my pocket.</p><h2 id="1eb526a5-91be-4063-bec1-58a529e97297"><strong>I had to constantly review what they were putting on the application forms</strong></h2><p>My key takeaway is that, even if you're working with lawyers, you still have to assume complete ownership of the application process and remember the lawyers supporting you, being human, can make mistakes.</p><p>I was audited because some of the information that had been submitted was incorrect. It took me six to eight months to provide supplemental information and pass the audit.</p><p>In 2022, I finally received my green card after three years.</p><h2 id="bd375841-9305-458d-bfb3-92ac255d1675"><strong>Last year, I decided to move into product management and took a new job at Starbucks</strong></h2><p>In software engineering, you work on problems created by engineers for engineers. I wanted to learn how to build products that our customers actually love, so I ended up becoming a technical product manager.</p><p>I love the US, I love the city I live in, and I love its people. If they prefer a longer stay, the site has a hotel with a restaurant, pool, and spa.</p><p>The dream of wood architecture in Sweden doesn't stop with the architects of the Sara center — in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stockholm-sweden-wood-city-sustainable-development-photos-2023-7">Stockholm,</a> plans are underway to build an entire wooden city center.</p><p>The architects told the Post that, at least in the heavily forested areas of Sweden<strong>,</strong> wood-based architecture is the future of sustainable building for several reasons.</p><p>These buildings don't depend on cement. The building material's emissions have grown faster than most other single sources of carbon dioxide thanks to their increased demand and production, <a target="_blank" href="https://insideclimatenews.org/news/24062022/concrete-is-worse-for-the-climate-than-flying-why-arent-more-people-talking-about-it/"><u>Inside Climate News</u></a> reported. Cement manufacturing accounts for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, research from the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas.1821673116">University of Rochester</a> shows.</p><p>They also don't depend on steel. The material's manufacturing accounts for 7 to 9% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions, per the <a target="_blank" href="https://worldsteel.org/publications/policy-papers/climate-change-policy-paper/"><u>World Steel Association.</u></a></p><p>White Arkitekter also claims that their process will be carbon negative, the Post reported, because the buildings themselves will store nearly 9,100 tons of carbon dioxide — offsetting the carbon used to transport and build the structures themselves.</p><p>And while fire is a concern, the Sara center's architects told the publication that there are processes in place to ensure the safety of these buildings, such as using fire-resistant coatings on buildings.</p><p>The trend of timber structures is not limited to Sweden, the Post reported. Reliance to set up carbon fibre facility in Gujarat as Ambani promises 'green growth'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>California aerospace startup JetZero got the green light to fly its new "Pathfinder" aircraft.</li><li>The twinjet features a unique "blended-wing body" and is expected to carry up to 250 people.</li></ul><p>Aerospace companies across the globe are breaking from the norm of producing traditional "tube and wing" aircraft and instead looking into <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supersonic-jet-boom-overture-costs-technology-experts-skeptical-2024-4">futuristic technologies that will make flying more efficient</a> and eco-friendly.</p><p>There are already concepts like zero-emission electric aircraft, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supersonic-jet-boom-overture-costs-technology-experts-skeptical-2024-4">supersonic jets</a>, and even hypersonic ones. But the latest example of these new plane types is "Pathfinder" — a stealth bomber-looking jet designed by the California-based aerospace company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jetzero.aero/">JetZero</a>.</p><p>The twinjet features a unique "blended-wing body," or BWB, a design where the wing and fuselage are combined into one.</p><p>After years of development, JetZero has built a 1:8 <a target="_blank" href="https://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/Search/NNumberResult?NNumberTxt=221ZE">demonstrator</a>, and the Federal Aviation Administration just gave the funky-shaped craft the green light to fly, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/travel/jetzero-pathfinder-subscale-demonstrator/index.html">CNN</a> reported on Thursday.</p><p>JetZero confirmed the news to Business Insider, saying "flights will start in the coming months" to test the "stability and control characteristics of JetZero's blended wing body design, as well as the operation of its innovative landing gear system."</p><p>The FAA told BI on Thursday that it "does not comment on ongoing certification projects" and that "safety will dictate the timeline."</p><h2>JetZero is building a single-deck, very widebody airliner</h2><p>JetZero touts its future very widebody airliner as a "middle market" passenger airliner with space for up to 250 people, meaning its rows could stretch 15 or 20 seats across, JetZero cofounder and CEO Tom O'Leary told CNN.</p><p>The jet would be a replacement option for traditional twin-engine widebodies like the Boeing 767, for example, according to JetZero.</p><div type="image" title="The Pathfinder plane at the airport gate." height="542" width="1084" msid="109088890" hostid="261" sizebytes="42728"></div><p>"The jetliner can fit seamlessly into today's infrastructure," the company told BI. "Passenger capacity of a small widebody but the weight, and engine requirement, of a single-aisle jet."</p><p>Pathfinder also has military applications, with the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/3494520/daf-selects-jetzero-to-develop-blended-wing-body-aircraft-prototype/">US Air Force</a> awarding $235 million to JetZero in August to develop a commercial-scale demonstrator, which JetZero told BI it plans to build by 2027.</p><p>The company said it expects the certified airliner to enter the market as soon as 2030, which aviation analyst Bailey Miles at consulting firm AviationValues told CNN is "inconceivable" considering the complexities of the BWB design.</p><p>Still, he said the concept "holds immense promise as a game changer in the aviation industry."</p><h2><strong>The blended-wing body significantly reduces fuel burn but will face design challenges</strong></h2><p>JetZero said it chose this specific BWB design due to its carbon-reducing benefits.</p><p>According to the US Air Force, the all-in-one wing reduces drag by 30% and increases lift — effectively reducing fuel burn and increasing global reach.</p><div type="image" title="Military USAF version of the Pathfinder." height="2550" width="5100" msid="109088891" hostid="261" sizebytes="142410"></div><p>Moreover, JetZero said the engines will eventually be developed to run on hydrogen, which would be zero-emissions. In the interim, initial versions of Pathfinder would boast 50% less fuel burn using borrowed engines, like those from the Boeing 737, CNN reported.</p><p>University of Illinois aerospace professor Michael Bragg told Business Insider that the development of lighter yet still strong composite materials is key to reducing fuel burn on BWB aircraft designs such as Pathfinder.</p><p>He also said that engineers have distributed the load across the entire aircraft, which negates the "bending moment" between the tube and wings on a traditional airplane. The composite technology makes this new load bearing possible, Bragg told BI.</p><p>Despite Pathfinder's sound design on paper, Bragg said proving and certifying a brand-new aircraft concept is much more challenging than developing a traditionally shaped jetliner.</p><p>"The product is essentially a new airframe and flight controls married to existing systems already certified for commercial flight," JetZero told BI.</p><p>The classic tube-and-wing plane design dates back to the 1950s dawn of the jet age on aircraft like the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 and has continued to today on modern widebodies like the Airbus A350 and the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-777x-testbed-test-plane-aircraft-new-see-inside-photos-2024-3">future Boeing 777X.</a></p><div type="image" title="Interior concept on Pathfinder." height="614" width="1228" msid="109088893" hostid="261" sizebytes="43366"></div><p>Such time-tested technology has a successful track record, so there has been little incentive to change the conventional aircraft design over the decades as using proven technology minimizes safety risks and is easier for production, Bragg said.</p><p>"A lot of that is because of manufacturing," he said. "It's easy to manufacture a tube, and, although not as easy, it's a well-known process of how to build the wings to attach."</p><p>Beyond the assembly line, Bragg told BI that JetZero must ensure passengers are comfortable inside Pathfinder's unique shape.</p><p>For example, he told BI the pressurization inside the plane — which is what helps humans breathe at high altitudes — is difficult to design in the very widebody structure. And most of those 200+ passengers would be in the middle section without a window, which Bragg told BI could put off travelers.</p><p>JetZero says on its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jetzero.aero/why-jetzero">website</a> that its cabin is more efficient for boarding and deplaning, and will have space for every person's cabin luggage.</p><h2>Pathfinder is 100 years in the making</h2><p>JetZero's Pathfinder is poised to be a groundbreaking technology should it ever hit the market, but it's not a new idea.</p><p>Engineers were reported by CNN to have crafted a similar blended-wing shape some 100 years ago. Most power generators with a renewable energy portfolio have also been gaining ground. <br /><br /><strong>What’s the scheme?<br /></strong><br />As per the scheme, state discoms who delay their payments beyond the default trigger date, will lose short-term power access. Apart from that, progressively these restrictions would increase each month for medium and long-term power access as well for each month of non-payment. <br /><br />The scheme is a game changer for the renewable power generators who are stuck with large capex costs along with delayed payments. <br /><br />“It (the scheme) reduced the counterparty credit risks posed by the state discoms. Not only would the state discoms have to clear their sizable backlog of owed dues to the gencos, they would also be more disincentivized to delay payments to the gencos given the punitive penalties,” said the CreditSights report. <br /><br />Gencos who are able to receive timely payments can improve their account receivables, working capital positions and cash flows. <br /><br />“Investor sentiment in the sector has also improved materially post the LPS scheme, based on our discussions with market participants,” CreditSights observed. <br /><br /><strong>More green consumers <br /></strong><br />In the Union Budget 21-22, eligible Indian states were granted additional borrowing limits of 0.25% - 0.5% of annual Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). This was applicable over a four-year period from FY22-FY25. <br /><br />Some of these benefits have flowed to the state discoms. Till date, ₹66,400 crore of additional borrowing permissions have been granted to the states — for financial support to the state discoms, the report said. <br /><br />The government also came up with Green Energy Open Access Rules in June last year, which helped improve offtake of renewable power. It reduced the renewable energy minimum offtake threshold of consumers from 1 MW to 100 kW. It also allows commercial &amp; industrial consumers to demand green power on a voluntary basis from state discoms. <br /><br />It also provided clarity on final tariffs charged to consumers of renewable energy, bringing in more transparency into the system. These new rules will drive better transparency, access and stronger demand for renewable energy across the smaller C&amp;I customers, CreditSights opines. <br /><br />The Indian government has set an ambitious target to convert 40% of total installed power capacity green by 2030. That means India would have to add 250 GW of renewable energy capacity between 2023-2027 – and it has been working actively to clear bottlenecks along the way, most of which is ensuring these green power producers are paid on time.<br />
