Budget resolves to give new direction to Maharashtra: CM Shinde

New Delhi, India's top oil firm IOC on Monday unveiled the nation's first <keyword id="18906554" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-hydrogen-powered-bus" source="Orion">green hydrogen-powered bus</keyword> that emits just water as it takes the lead in bringing out unrivaled tools to replace fossil fuels. Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) will produce close to 75 kg of hydrogen by splitting water using electricity from renewable sources. This hydrogen will be used to power two buses which will ply across the national capital region for trial runs. Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, flagging off the buses, said hydrogen will be India's transition fuel for moving away from fossil fuels. IOC's R&amp;D Centre at Faridabad is producing green hydrogen for the pilot run. Four cylinders with a capacity of 30 kg can run the buses for 350 km. It takes 10-12 minutes for the four tanks to fill. Hydrogen when burnt emits only water vapour as a by-product. With three times the energy density and the absence of harmful emissions, hydrogen shines as a cleaner, more efficient choice to meet the energy requirement. As much as 50 units of renewable electricity and 9 kg of deionized water are needed for the production of one kilo of green hydrogen. Hydrogen can be used as a fuel for fuel cells. Puri said by the end of 2023, IOC will scale up the number of buses to 15. IOC will undertake operational trials of 15 fuel cell buses powered by green hydrogen on the identified routes in Delhi, Haryana, and UP. Under this programme, the first set of 2 fuel cell buses was launched on Monday. "Our government has ambitious plans on clean and green energy. India has taken many steps towards low carbon development- through emerging fuels like hydrogen and bio-fuels and shall account for 25 per cent of global incremental energy demand growth over the next two decades," Puri said. Upon the launch of the two buses, a cumulative mileage of more than 3 lakh kilometers will be covered for long-term assessment of performance and durability of the new technology. India has one of the largest synchronous grids in the world, capable of handling intermittent renewable energy and it has achieved 'One Nation-One Grid-One Frequency'. "With the low cost solar, synchronous grid, large demand and engineering, India will be a global champion in production and exports of hydrogen and is set to emerge as the hub for green hydrogen," he said. Puri said recently the world's first BS 6 (Stage II) Electrified Flex Fuel vehicle prototype was launched that encompasses both the flex fuel engine as well as an electric powertrain that offers higher use of ethanol combined with better fuel efficiencies. Hydrogen is deemed as the fuel for the future with immense potential to help India meet its decarbonization targets. The global demand for hydrogen is expected to increase by four to seven times to 500-800 tonne by 2050. Domestic demand is expected to increase by four times, from the current 6 tonne at present to 25-28 tonne by 2050. Oil and gas PSUs shall produce around 1 million tonne per annum of green hydrogen by 2030. "So we're going to have resilience, we're going to have green power 98% of the time, and we're getting our greenhouse-gas emissions down."

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Regulators want to slash the number of short-haul flights to reduce aviation's carbon emissions.</li><li>But experts told BI recent regulations might only have a small impact on reducing emissions.</li><li>Shifting to greener fuels and enhancing green tech are essential for cleaner air travel.</li></ul>To reduce carbon emissions and boost sustainability in the aviation industry, some governments and air-travel regulators are looking to ban or severely limit the number of short-haul flights.Air travel is a dirty business: While the industry <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iea.org/energy-system/transport/aviation">produces about 2%</a> of global energy-related carbon emissions, a plane trip produces <a target="_blank" href="https://news.mongabay.com/2022/04/how-much-does-air-travel-warm-the-planet-new-study-gives-a-figure/">100 times more carbon dioxide per hour</a> than a train or bus ride. And short-haul flights, or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eurocontrol.int/publication/eurocontrol-data-snapshot-co2-emissions-flight-distance">routes of 932 miles or less</a>, produce a disproportionate amount of carbon output. A report from the International Council on Clean Transportation, or ICCT, found that short-haul flights made up <a target="_blank" href="https://theicct.org/not-every-tonne-of-aviation-co2-is-created-equal/">a third of all global aviation emissions</a> in 2018.But experts say bans alone won't significantly impact carbon emissions. Instead, reducing the number of short-haul flights, experimenting with new technologies, and investing in environmentally friendly travel alternatives may go further in reducing the aerospace industry's carbon footprint.<h2>Regulations on short-haul flights aren't yet having the desired effect on emissions</h2>Denmark announced last year that by 2025, Danes will be able to fly domestically on a "completely green route," meaning that at least one domestic flight would be carbon-free and that all domestic flights would be fossil-fuel-free by 2030. The move makes Denmark one of the first countries to signal publicly for stronger aviation-sustainability policies.The Danish government also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/climate-energy/denmark-proposes-14-green-passenger-tax-air-travel-2023-11-09/">announced a "green tax</a>" on passengers starting in 2025 to finance the country's green domestic route. The tax, converted from Danish krone, amounts to $9 for flights within Europe, $35 for medium-distance flights, and $56 for long-haul flights.Similarly, earlier this year, the French government enacted a law banning any flights within the country that a train ride of 2-and-½ hours or less could replace.The law initially seemed like a big win for climate activists, but the number of exceptions for international travel meant the law only impacted three routes between Paris-Orly Airport and the cities of Nantes, Bordeaux, and Lyon.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/summer-flight-cancellations-airlines-partner-with-buses-trains-2022-5">France's hyper-connected railway</a> allows passengers to move between cities without changing travel patterns. Since high-speed trains already connect the impacted flight routes, potentially limiting the law's effects, the country's aviation industry isn't likely to see any big changes to its carbon footprint."In terms of absolute emissions reduction, it's not going to do too much," Sola Zheng, a researcher on the ICCT aviation program team, told Business Insider. He told BI that banning these routes would have minimal environmental effects unless regulations <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-innovation-not-only-solution-to-climate-crisis-2023-7">address the industry holistically.</a>"Maybe ban short-haul flights, but then don't expect that to solve the problem," he said. "We need to talk about the long-haul flights as well."<h2>Other strategies could curb the industry's emissions</h2>The solution to the industry's emissions problem, Mattioli said, can be divided into a three-part strategy: avoid, shift, and improve. Avoiding would mean curbing the amount of flying we already do, or at least maintaining the same level of travel without increasing it; shifting would mean moving toward methods of travel, such as trains or buses, that create less pollution; and improving would mean enhancing sustainable aviation technology.Mattioli told BI these strategies are all complementary, so the aviation industry must implement them simultaneously."It's only if we do those three things at the same time we have a chance of reducing emissions at the rate at which we should," Mattioli said.Zheng said one emerging aviation technology that could make a difference is alternative power sources, such as hydrogen or electricity. Shorter flights are great candidates to test these advancements since electric and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aviation-industry-net-zero-by-2050-disagree-decarbonization-2023-12">hydrogen-powered planes</a> are often distance-constrained due to battery density and fueling needs. Because short-haul flights don't have to travel very far, the aviation industry won't have to change many flight patterns to test alternative power sources.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aviation-sustainable-fuel-saf-production-challenge-decarbonization-zero-emissions-planes-2023-1">Sustainable aviation fuels</a> have also recently gained industry attention because they're largely made of waste materials or renewable biomass. While aircraft could theoretically use these materials for longer flights, supply problems make their use as primary fuel unrealistic for the near future."You want to develop these other solutions for the shorter ones, so you can decarbonize both at the same rate," Zheng said.<h2>Passengers can help reduce emissions, too</h2>Flying continues to be a priority for travelers. A report from the International Civil Aviation Organization found that demand for air travel is expected to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.icao.int/Meetings/FutureOfAviation/Pages/default.aspx#:~:text=The%20most%20recent%20estimates%20suggest,GDP%20to%20the%20world%20economy.">grow by about 4.3% a year over the next 20 years</a>.But Zheng said passengers are interested in making their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/eco-friendly-travel-sustainability-expert-tips-2023-4">travel greener</a> and are willing to take steps to accomplish that goal. A Booking.com survey found that <a target="_blank" href="https://globalnews.booking.com/download/31767dc7-3d6a-4108-9900-ab5d11e0a808/booking.com-sustainable-travel-report2023.pdf">76% of surveyed passengers</a> want to make their travel more sustainable over the next year, and 43% of surveyed passengers are willing to pay more for it.Zheng recommended flying on newer aircraft or booking an economy seat. Flights that dedicate more seats to standard seating can fit more people, reducing each passenger's carbon footprint."We have to experiment," she said. "There's never going to be a silver bullet."

Short-haul flights are the first target for sustainable aviation — but aerospace experts say banning them probably won't make the difference

Today, he's working at a Swedish startup focused on producing eco-friendly steel. In May 2021, Bula moved to Stockholm, Sweden, to become the chief commercial officer at H2 Green Steel, a<a href="https://www.h2greensteel.com/"> Swedish startup</a> that aims to<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/green-steel-jobs-engineering-tech-fight-climate-change-2021-12"> produce steel with hydrogen</a> instead of carbon to reduce the CO2 emissions that steelmaking produces. He found the opportunity after receiving a cold email from the company's chairman about building a low-carbon steel mill in Sweden."I thought, 'How nice would it be to be able to try something overseas, to have that experience?'" Bula, who isn't sure his family wants to go back to the US, said. "In the US, we are very oriented towards our jobs. Here, it's more about how you enjoy life, what activities, sports, and outdoor activities you do. It's a different kind of lifestyle."Bula walked Insider through a day in his life, and how work and life in Sweden stacks up against work and life in the US.<h2>6 a.m. — wake up and a 'sacred' cup of coffee</h2>When he first moved to Sweden, Bula said he found himself "so excited for the job" that he would make it to the office before 6:30 or 7 a.m. Now that he's established a routine a year later, he wakes up around 6 a.m."I make myself a cup of coffee, which in Sweden is sacred," he said, adding that he didn't drink coffee in the US.After coffee, he goes to the gym across the street from his apartment in the Stockholm city center."The Swedes are big on exercise," he said. "A lot of companies make sure there's access to a gym, or you're paid to go to a gym."After a shower, Bula takes a 20-minute bus ride to the office. Most of his coworkers come in around 8 or 8:30 a.m., he said.Bula said he has a tendency to socialize at work, and he sees it as part of his role as a leader. "I try not to make it obvious, but I enjoy getting around and talking to people," he said.In the US, Bula said he had a larger office to himself, but in Sweden, the office is an open room with open desks."Those desks float for the most part," he said. "You don't really have an assigned desk, so I try to get in early to make sure I always get my same desk. You can't take that part of the American out of me."<h2>10 a.m. — a ceremonial second coffee</h2>Later in the morning, Bula said he goes for another cup of coffee before he starts his next meeting. Some afternoons, before or after lunch, Bula has fika — the Swedish custom of having coffee and something (usually) sweet with friends — with his colleagues.He spends most of his day working with the sales team and the legal person on his commercial team. On Mondays, Bula said leadership meetings or contract negotiations mostly fill his schedule. Most of the work is focused on pre-selling the steel mill to raise the 4 billion euros needed to build it."A lot of what I do throughout the day is talk to customers and work with the sales team to close offtake agreements to prove to banks and lenders that there is interest in this project, and there is an opportunity to penetrate the market."<h2>11:45 a.m. — lunch with colleagues</h2>Bula said he's observed that lunchtime in Sweden is done together."In the US, so many of us want to take our lunch and go off so we can get away from everybody," Bula said. "Not here."At first, Bula said he found it strange that he was expected to have lunch with his coworkers, but now he enjoys sitting and talking with people, sometimes learning Swedish phrases from them.Bula said having lunch with his coworkers is a "nice switch" from a typical workday lunch in the US.Employees typically take an hour for lunch before going back to work, Bula said. He's been doing the lessons for three months."I will admit that at the end of a long day on Monday, it's hard to focus on Swedish lessons," Bula said. "But it does give you this confidence level."<h2>7:30 p.m. — dinnertime, at a different pace</h2>The earliest Bula eats dinner is 7 p.m., which is the same as he did in the US."We're a lot more relaxed over dinner here than we were back home," Bula said. "We were walking in the door, trying to prepare a meal, then rush through the meal so we could go watch TV for an hour and maybe do more work."In Sweden, Bula picks up fresh food at the store, walks the dog, and then goes home to prepare dinner."It's a very different pace," he said.<h2>10 p.m. — the end of a long day</h2>Sometimes, Bula says, he'll do work for an hour after dinner before going to bed. But he also likes to watch Netflix to relax; he doesn't usually watch the news, he said, because it's in Swedish.Bula said he doesn't sleep late. In the summer months, the sun in Sweden comes up around 3:30 or 4 a.m., and doesn't set until 10:30 or 11 p.m."I find the climate here, the hours of sun, and everything else to be better," he said.Every day at a startup is different, Bula said. At H2 Green Steel, "there's always something different about it, and I find that to be a lot of fun."

 At 32 years, <keyword id="3340822" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ankit-Love">Ankit Love</keyword>, a British-Dogra musician is the youngest candidate running for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=london+mayor&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">London Mayor</a>. 
 Ankit grew up in Surrey and is the son of <keyword id="17605" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jammu-and-kashmir">Jammu and Kashmir</keyword> Nation Panthers Party member <keyword id="131898" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bhim-Singh">Bhim Singh</keyword>. In his <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/ankit-love-58085372">LinkedIn profile</a>, Ankit describes himself as a music artiste, filmmaker and founder of Ankit Love Productions. His profile also describes him as “His Highness The Emperor (Maharaja), Sovereign State of Jammu and Kashmir.” 
 
Back in 2012, his documentary Runners and short film Whale! had premiered at the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cannes&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Cannes Film Festiva</a>l. 
 
Along with his former <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cambridge+university&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Cambridge University</a> graduate Finn Grant, Ankit reportedly set up his ‘<keyword id="3349221" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="One-Love-Party">One Love Party</keyword>’ a year ago in ‘a dorm room’ to spread the message of peace for all mankind.

‘Born under the armed guard’ in 1983, Ankit claimed that his mother named him Love with the hope that we would bring peace to the region. He reprtedly moved to the UK in 1989 for security reasons because of his family’s political engagements. 
 Ankit’s father Bhim Singh is however not pleased. “I wish Ankit had not joined <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword>.  When asked why his son is calling himself the <keyword id="3349220" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maharaja-of-Jammu-and-Kashmir">Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir</keyword>, Bhim Singh adds that it appears to be ‘an attempt to expose the Indian leadership’s inaction in resolving the problems of the state.’
