Contrary to public perception, the <keyword id="74074" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="antarctic" source="Orion">Antarctic</keyword> <keyword id="1917280" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ozone-hole" source="Orion">ozone hole</keyword> has been amongst the largest on record over the past three years, new research has found. The ozone hole above Antarctica has been remarkably massive and long-lived over the past four years and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are not the only things to blame, said researchers in their study published in the journal Nature Communications. <br /><br />CFCs are greenhouse gases containing carbon, <keyword id="169046" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hydrogen" source="Orion">hydrogen</keyword>, <keyword id="21070" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chlorine" source="Orion">chlorine</keyword> and fluorine and have been studied to contribute to ozone depletion. The ozone layer in the Earth's atmosphere blocks the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun to protect people from skin diseases. <br /><br />According to the study's lead author Hannah Kessenich, PhD candidate at the University of Otago, New Zealand, the team found much less ozone in the centre of the hole compared to 19 years ago. <br /><br />"This means that the hole is not only larger in area, but also deeper throughout most of spring," said Kessenich. <br /><br />The team analysed the monthly and daily ozone changes, at different altitudes and latitudes within the Antarctic ozone hole, from 2004 to 2022. <br /><br />"We made connections between this drop in ozone and changes in the air that is arriving into the polar vortex above Antarctica. This reveals the recent, large ozone holes may not be caused just by CFCs," said Kessenich. <br /><br />The researchers believe that there are complex factors contributing to the ozone hole, even as the 1987 Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer regulates the production and consumption of man-made chemicals known to deplete the ozone. <br /><br />Therefore, they are raising concerns about how major communications about the ozone layer over the last few years have given the public the impression that the 'ozone issue' has been solved. <br /><br />"While the Montreal Protocol has vastly improved our situation with CFCs destroying ozone, the hole has been amongst the largest on record over the past three years, and in two of the five years prior to that. <br /><br />"Our analysis ended with data from 2022, but as of today the 2023 ozone hole has already surpassed the size of the three years prior - late last month it was over 26 million square kilometres, nearly twice the area of Antarctica," said Kessenich. <br /><br />The researchers said that understanding ozone variability is important because of the major role it plays in the Southern Hemisphere's climate. <br /><br />"We all know about the recent wildfires and cyclones in Australia and New Zealand and the Antarctic ozone hole is part of this picture. <br /><br />"While separate from the impact of greenhouse gases on climate, the ozone hole interacts with the delicate balance in the atmosphere. Because ozone usually absorbs UV light, a hole in the ozone layer can not only cause extreme UV levels on the surface of Antarctica, but it can also drastically impact where heat is stored in the atmosphere," said Kessenich.

Ozone hole largest on record over past 3 years, new research finds

Adani Transmission Ltd (<keyword id="447291" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="atl" source="Orion">ATL</keyword>), India's largest private power distribution company and the transmission arm of the diversified <keyword id="6367820" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="adani-group" source="Orion">Adani Group</keyword>, has submitted its Green House Gases (GHG) emission reduction plans, focussing on Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an international drive for containing global warming.<br /><br />ATL has submitted its detailed plan and targets for GHG emission reduction to SBTi within one year towards its commitment to contribute to contain global warming.<br /><br />As a part of its continued focus on sustainable growth and its net zero journey, ATL committed for the SBTi in October 2021. ATL will act in alignment with the much-needed climate action and devise a strategy to restrict global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius.<br /><br />To meet these targets associated with the SBTi commitment, ATL has rolled out definite strategies. In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, ATL's subsidiary AEML (Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd) has introduced green tariffs, which enables AEML consumers to opt for green energy and receive a Green Power Certificate every month. This initiative is popular with consumers who wish to reduce their carbon footprint.<br /><br />"We take seriously all initiatives focused on contributing to India's climate commitment through resolute climate action," said <keyword id="175186" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="anil-sardana" source="Orion">Anil Sardana</keyword>, MD &amp; CEO, Adani Transmission Ltd. "Submitting targets for the SBTi reiterates our commitment to devising sustainable ways of doing business. It also reinforces India's efforts to reduce climate risk through individual and collective action. A culmination of several smaller actions such as energy efficiency initiatives at sub-stations, de-linking of substations from the grid for auxiliary power while connecting them with solar energy, and introduction of efficient transmission lines aimed at reducing losses, combined with wider actions such as introduction of green tariff at AEML, will significantly contribute towards achieving positive climate action."<br /><br />Signing up for the SBTi is an important step in the context of India's commitments to the Paris Climate Agreement. ATL became a signatory of UN Energy Compact at COP26 held in Glasgow in 2021. Through SBTi, companies are setting science-based emissions reduction targets - across their entire value chain - that are consistent with keeping global warming at 1.5 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels. SBTi committed companies get 24 months to submit their targets. ATL, after committing to SBTi in Oct 2021, is one of the few companies to submit the emission reduction targets within one year.<br /><br />SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (<keyword id="1044129" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wri" source="Orion">WRI</keyword>) and the <keyword id="62483" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-wide-fund-for-nature" source="Orion">World Wide Fund for Nature</keyword> (<keyword id="18630" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wwf" source="Orion">WWF</keyword>). Adani Transmission to become net-zero by 2050

Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, <keyword id="2627479" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="prahlad-singh-patel" source="Orion">Prahlad Singh Patel</keyword> on Thursday said that the Centre will encourage and promote not just the production of millets but also processed millet products for the global market.<br /><br />"Next year, i.e. 2023, is the International Year of Millets. <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> produces 40 per cent of world's millets. Our government has made tremendous efforts to promote millets and not just for production but also for processed millet foods for supplying to international markets," Patel told mediapersons.<br /><br />Patel was speaking on the sidelines of the first Plant-Based Foods Summit organised by Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), Agriculture &amp; Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (<keyword id="60672" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="apeda" source="Orion">APEDA</keyword>), and Plant Based Foods Industry <keyword id="6356105" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="association" source="Orion">Association</keyword> (<keyword id="14035967" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pbfia" source="Orion">PBFIA</keyword>).<br /><br />In his speech, he batted for millets and spoke of the parameters and enabling factors by APEDA for millets and plant-based food and such processed food.<br /><br />"Our Ministry has been allotted over Rs 10,000 crore for promotion of this kind of food. The only condition is that the company should be Indian," Patel said, and gave example of several traditional Indian food items that just "need to be validated by scientific documentation of traditional practices".<br /><br />"India has traditionally been a supporter of plant-based food. It has been our strength," the Minister said and assured support for the plant-based industry.<br /><br /><keyword id="118292" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sanjay-sethi" source="Orion">Sanjay Sethi</keyword>, Exective Director of PBFIA, appealed to the animal-based food industry "to not look at us as competitors but rather as a younger brother" and also suggested hand-holding for the nascent industry.<br /><br />With sustainability and human health as key driving forces behind the activities of the Association, the foremost aim of PBFIA is to make plant-based foods mainstream while providing new avenues for economic growth.<br /><br /><keyword id="14035966" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="inoshi-sharma" source="Orion">Inoshi Sharma</keyword>, Executive Director, <keyword id="154680" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="fssai" source="Orion">FSSAI</keyword>, pointed to the increasing disconnect with India's traditional food items, which is evident much more in urban areas. But the moment I say, I am having baba ganoush and pita bread, I am cool. With 2023 as the 'International Year of Millets', India all set to promote millet products in global market

New Delhi, Dec 14 () India is among the top 10 nations as per the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) which is based parameters like renewable power and energy use efficiency, Power Minster R K Singh said on Saturday.
<p> This assumes significance in view of India's resolve to reach 175 GW of clean energy capacity by 2022. The country has already achieved around 84 GW of clean energy capacity, including 32 GW of solar and 37 GW of wind energy.
</p><p> At present, India's total installed power generation capacity is around 365 GW.
</p><p> "I am happy to share that as per CCPI report, released during COP 2019 at Madrid, India is ranked among the top 10 countries in CCPI, which was released after analysing four parameters, that is green house gases emission, renewable energy, climate change and energy use," Singh said while addressing the 29th National Energy Conservation Awards ceremony in the capital.
</p><p> The minister said 355 industrial units and other establishments have participated in the awards and have collectively achieved savings of Rs 5,283 crore by saving 105.66 billion units of electricity.
</p><p> This year, energy conservation was celebrated through week-long activities culminating in the National Energy Conservation Day on Saturday.
</p><p> Singh highlighted the importance of energy conservation in the country's sustainable development approach.
</p><p> He emphasised the need for taking measures in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions so as to minimise the adverse impact of climate change.
</p><p> The power minister also lauded the efforts of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency and complimented the industry for making sincere efforts in implementing various schemes.

India among top 10 nations on climate change performance index: Power Min

<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/55308716.cms" />An IIT study provided to the Delhi government by IIT Kanpur in the beginning of this year had identified the factors that caused pollution. It even offered steps to tackle it.<br />
<br /> The Comprehensive Study on Air Pollution and <keyword id="6401942" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Green-house">Green House</keyword> Gases in Delhi had cautioned that Delhi had a complex urban environment with respect to air pollution and faced severe air pollution of PM10, PM2.5 and NO2.<br />
<br /> “The winter sources (% contribution given in parenthesis for PM10 - PM2.5) include: secondary particles (25 - 30%), vehicles (20 - 25%), biomass burning (17 – 26%), MSW (<keyword id="143724" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="municipal-solid-waste">municipal solid waste</keyword>) burning (9 - 8%) and to a lesser extent soil and road dust. It is noteworthy, in winter; major sources for PM10 and PM2.5 are generally the same,” cited the study.<br />

It called for “an integrated pollution control approach in the region” to help improve the air quality. The study said that although sources contributing to summer and winter air pollution are different but the overall action plan should include control of all sources regardless of season. It warned that air polluting sources were plenty and efforts were required for every sector/source. “In addition, there is a need to explore various options for controlling air pollutants for increased emission in future,” it said.<br />

<strong>Ban on MSW</strong><br />
The study noted that burning of Municipal Solid Waste is wide spread in Delhi and NCR, and it is more frequent in winter. “A recent study by Nagpure et al. (2015) in Delhi has estimated 190 to 246 tons/day of MSW burning. The presence of chloride in the ambient air indicates that along with MSW, plastics and tyres burning could also be taking place in some areas. The estimated emissions are: 2000 kg/d of PM10 and about 1800 kg/d of PM2.5. MSW burning contributes to nearly 10% of PM10 and PM2.5 in ambient air in winters.”<br />

<strong>Stop garbage burning</strong><br />
It added that any form of garbage burning should be strictly stopped and monitored for its compliance. It will require development of infrastructure (including access to remote and congested areas) for effective collection of MSW and disposal at landfill site. The other viable option due to space constraint is to use Waste to Energy technology with effective flue gas control system to dispose MSW. The study suggested a complete ban on MSW on the basis that it could bring the emissions from this source to zero this could lead to an improvement of 5-10 percent in air quality.<br />

<strong>Curb pollution from diesel vehicles</strong><br />
The study also pointed out that vehicle emission and their contribution to ambient air concentration is significant to PM10 and PM2.5 both in winter and summer. “In winter, on average vehicles can contribute 25% to PM2.5 and at certain locations this contribution could be above 35%. In summer, vehicular contribution is masked by other prominent sources. There is a significant contribution of diesel vehicles to PM10, PM2.5 and NOx”. Therefore, control measures have focused on advanced technological intervention for diesel vehicles.<br />

<strong>Make city 100% LPG fueled</strong><br />
Although Delhi is kerosene free and 90% of the households use LPG for cooking, the remaining 10% uses wood, crop residue, cow dung, and coal for cooking. The study said that “LPG should be made available to remaining 10% households to make the city 100% LPG-fueled. This action is expected to reduce 55% of PM10 (3270 kg/d), 50% of PM2.5 (2829 kg/d) and 4% of NOx (635 kg/d) emissions from domestic sector. This reduction in emission will reduce the ambient air concentration by 4.4 µg/m3 and 3.6 µg/m3 in PM10 and PM2.5 respectively”.<br />
