<ul class="summary-list"><li>After spending over 30 years <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/high-end-golf-course-mistakes-to-avoid-seasoned-golfer-2024-8">writing about golf</a> and visiting over 200 courses, I have favorites.</li><li>Cypress Point Club and Spyglass Hill are both beautiful courses in California.</li></ul><p>A great golf course is like a classic work of statuary — except that the medium is the earth itself, not just a hunk of marble or wet clay.</p><p>Given the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.ngf.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/AGIC_Economic-Impact-Report-2023.pdf">US golf industry's economic impact</a> is in the billions and has reportedly grown by 63% in the past two decades, it's no surprise there are so many course options.</p><p>I've been writing about golf and travel for over 30 years and played hundreds of such green jigsaw puzzles. The best architects use the natural flow of the land and native trees and grasses to fashion a route that's fair yet challenging. </p><p>It's hard to narrow down my favorite courses, but these stand out for their beauty and enduring appeal to golfers of all skill levels.</p><p>Here are eight of my all-time <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-golf-courses-in-america-2014-5">favorite golf courses</a>.</p><h2 id="06310bc3-5c6d-4090-ac96-3e9a5cfb205f"><strong>I'll never forget Cypress Point Club in Pebble Beach, California</strong></h2><div type="image" title="An aerial view of Pebble Beach golf course along rocks and ocean" height="3368" width="5000" msid="114665017" hostid="261" sizebytes="1541260"></div><p>I was lucky to golf at an Alister MacKenzie-designed course while at the University of Michigan for four years. I never dreamed I'd one day survey the golf-course architect's crowning achievement, the Cypress Point Club.</p><p>Located along the Pacific Ocean in Pebble Beach, California, it's both beautiful and extremely exclusive — only 250 or so CEOs and other elites are members.</p><p>The fabled 16<sup>th</sup> hole — a par 3 with a daunting tee shot over crashing surf and craggy rocks — will live in my mind's eye forever.</p><h2 id="fb3afa20-ce23-444a-a110-535aace15f6c">The nearby Spyglass Hill is also incredible</h2><p>Just down the coast from Cypress Point stands Spyglass Hill, a classic Robert Trent Jones Sr. design along the Pacific.</p><p>It's well worth the stiff greens fees — around $415 — given its prized location by Carmel-by-the-Sea and its perennial popularity among golfers.</p><p>Spyglass is a three-layer confection: it courses up and downhill through dense pine forests and austere sand dunes — it even has a too-brief encounter with the sea.</p><h2 id="14a36765-17a4-406a-a983-d02504c0da55"><strong>Forest Dunes Golf Club in northern Michigan is one of the Mitten State's best-kept secrets</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Overview of Forest Dunes Golf Club with large bodies of water in irregular shapes surrounded by golf course greens with irregularly shaped sand bits and trees behind the course" height="3948" width="5272" msid="114665018" hostid="261" sizebytes="1390472"></div><p>To create Forest Dunes Golf Club, golf pro Tom Weiskopf routed 18 holes through aromatic, pine-studded sand dunes in the middle of Michigan farm country.</p><p>Forest Dunes alone is worth the trek to Roscommon, Michigan, and you must also play its ingenious companion course, The Loop.</p><p>A rare Tom Doak "reversible" design, The Loop features two distinct, 18-hole layouts on the same piece of earth. Play it one way on Monday and then enjoy an entirely different routing on Tuesday.</p><h2 id="af37547c-84c6-4e34-ba9d-5060cc69ef0b">Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is located on a majestic stretch of unspoiled Oregon coastline</h2><p>No modern golf fan can fail to pay homage to Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon, where seven different courses perch above the ocean on 2,500 acres.</p><p>It was designed by architect David McLay Kidd and inspired by the ancient links courses of Scotland, which were typically set on grassy natural areas between sea and land. The course is an homage to his Scottish heritage, with gusting winds and panoramic views of the entire property.</p><p>It's huge — plan on staying a week at the resort and booking a foot massage upon your return. By the last glorious hole, you might log 40 miles on your feet.</p><h2 id="47aaa557-1d30-405c-988e-0512b65e6f94"><strong>Gamble Sands in remote Brewster, Washington, is a must-visit destination</strong></h2><p>Golfers of every skill level will enjoy Gamble Sands' capacious fairways and equally generous greens. Nothing beats its three drivable par 4s overlooking the Columbia River.</p><p>You can also stay on the property and play its short, 14-hole course, Quicksands, for a between-meals amuse bouche.</p><p>Plus, a second 18-hole Kidd-designed course is set to debut here in 2025.</p><h2 id="b783b3bf-a6fc-4407-8ebc-3453eb33ee7d"><strong>Scottsdale has </strong>some of Arizona's finest courses</h2><div type="image" title="View of mountains in Arizona in distance in front of golfers on green" height="3774" width="5661" msid="114665019" hostid="261" sizebytes="688596"></div><p>Scottsdale, Arizona, is home to over 200 golf courses and is a choice <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quartzsite-arizona-nomadland-location-snowbirds-cheap-rv-resorts-2024-2">winter getaway for snowbirds</a> from all over.</p><p>The deepest-pocketed of them probably call the private gated community Desert Mountain their home away from home.</p><p>There are six Jack Nicklaus courses on the property. The very first, Renegade, is regarded to be among his most ingenious designs.</p><p>Featuring six double greens and seven tee boxes, it can play from 4,400 to over 8,000 yards and offers painterly views of the Sonoran Desert sunsets.</p><h2 id="c0d46365-66cc-41b4-9759-245f53ab08c2"><strong>Omni Golf's Grove Park Inn is still popular after 100 years</strong></h2><div type="image" title="View of stone-covered building behind trees and greenery and in front of mountains at The Omni Grove Park Inn" height="3648" width="5472" msid="114664918" hostid="261" sizebytes="2011844"></div><p>The Carolinas are known for having some great golf. North Carolina gets bragging rights for its justifiably famous Pinehurst No. 2 course, but let's not overlook Omni Golf's Grove Park Inn in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-to-do-asheville-north-carolina-best-place-to-travel-in-us-2016-12">Asheville</a>.</p><p>Surrounded by the majestic <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-beautiful-mountain-ranges-in-the-us-2020-5">Blue Ridge Mountains</a>, the course is over a century old and was originally designed by renowned architect Donald Ross.</p><p>The adjoining Grove Park Inn, with its 43,000-square-foot subterranean spa, is also worth a visit. The historic resort has hosted the likes of Barack Obama and F. Scott Fitzgerald, as well as innumerable golf legends.</p><h2 id="f5012c7a-e9d1-419d-814a-db5cbfbbea67"><strong>Cabo del Sol ranks among Mexico's best resorts — and its got great golf, too</strong></h2><p>Mexico has seen an explosion of new golf courses in the last decade, but Tom Weiskopf's Cabo del Sol layout in Los Cabos has been a top draw for over 20 years now.</p><p>It deserves kudos for the views alone — the glimmering Sea of Cortez is visible from all 18 holes as the course winds its way through desert washes and sand.</p><p>The course is also undergoing a $20 million makeover, with some stunning new holes and a swanky clubhouse. If you visit, don't leave without trying the local sea-bass tacos.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I've played golf for decades and have visited many <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-exclusive-golf-clubs-in-the-world-photos">famous golf courses</a> around the world.</li><li>I often see first-timers at high-end courses forget to check the dress code or choose the wrong tee.</li></ul><p>I've written about golf for the past 30 years, though I've been playing since I was about 10.</p><p>I've also been privileged to visit over 200 courses around the world, including legendary spots like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-open-pebble-beach-golf-course-2019-6">Pebble Beach</a>, Cypress Point, and Southern Hills — home to many PGA tournaments over the years.</p><p>But I know very well that the game can frustrate and frazzle even the best players.</p><p>Think strategically before booking your next <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/masters-billionaires-favorite-golf-tournament-kicks-off-augusta-national-2024-4">golf outing</a> or extended vacation, and avoid these mistakes I often see first-timers make when visiting high-end courses.</p><h2 id="7d883464-41f2-40f2-8df4-32f1863f3f58"><strong>Choosing the wrong course and tee</strong></h2><p>Golf courses are like fingerprints: Each has its unique identity and characteristics. Try to choose the right one.</p><p>For those new to the game, the average public municipal course is a good place to start, followed by user-friendly resort courses. Championship layouts are typically meant for competitive play.</p><p>It's also crucial to play from the proper tee. Most courses have up to five different starting points on each hole for different skill levels.</p><p>The back tees are for experienced players who can hit far. Choosing them can add hundreds of yards to a round, so pick your starting point carefully and with realistic expectations.</p><h2 id="7d3e8374-ca3f-4f87-b93f-076f57cac42e"><strong>Overpacking</strong></h2><div type="image" title="man with golf clubs on his back" height="1414" width="2121" msid="112476063" hostid="261" sizebytes="286564"></div><p>When you're jetting off for a weekend of golf, pack light.</p><p>Not only do most airlines charge hefty fees for bulky golf travel bags, but also hauling them around can be hernia-inducing.</p><p>Fortunately, it's often not necessary to pack so much. Most courses are well-stocked with high-end rental clubs and sell everything from golf balls to Gatorade.</p><p>Or you can even have your own gear shipped ahead to your golf course through services like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.shipsticks.com/">Ship Sticks</a>.</p><h2 id="87d70862-03b4-4e9a-97d9-14cdc3d0c714"><strong>Not checking to see if the course has a dress code</strong></h2><p>Higher-end country clubs and resorts typically have a dress code, so look into it ahead of time.</p><p>The codes often suggest collared shirts tucked into belted trousers or athletic skirts and golf shoes — no denim or tank tops.</p><h2 id="ca9085d5-832c-4d36-9d0d-e262505f411b"><strong>Traveling to serious golf resorts with people who don't want to play</strong></h2><div type="image" title="golf hole in Bandon, Oregon" height="1500" width="2000" msid="112476061" hostid="261" sizebytes="521544"></div><p>If you're traveling with people who prefer biking and beaching to flailing away at a tiny dimpled ball, skip the super-serious golf resorts.</p><p>Instead, find a spot that has excellent courses and something for the rest of your group, too.</p><p>There are tons of options. <a target="_blank" href="https://bandondunesgolf.com/">Bandon Dunes Resort</a> in coastal Oregon has seven glorious courses plus miles of hiking trails. An hour outside Atlanta, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reynoldslakeoconee.com/">Reynolds Lake Oconee</a> has seven championship golf courses and also hiking trails and courts for pickleball and tennis.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.omnihotels.com/hotels/austin-barton-creek">Omni Barton Creek</a> has multiple championship golf courses and is only a short drive from the live music, barbecue, and whiskey in downtown <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/austin-travel-guide-hotels-activities-restaurants-and-more-2021-10">Austin</a>.</p><h2 id="02f1b6f4-d9c6-44ae-a7c3-f43a9c17248d"><strong>Not booking a tee time in advance</strong></h2><p>Getting a tee time at popular courses can feel like a Herculean task these days.</p><p>Places like the aforementioned Bandon Dunes are booked out over a year in advance. The same is true for legendary locations like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pebblebeach.com/">Pebble Beach</a> (its greens fees are north of $600 and well worth it).</p><p>Finding open slots is an art form that can be done with the help of apps like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.noteefy.app/">Noteefy</a>, which alert you when there are last-minute cancellations at top-shelf courses.</p><p>You may also want to try less-traveled byways like Wisconsin, where Sand Valley and Destination Kohler are the current talk of the golf world yet still have tee times available this year.</p><h2 id="7103a467-8059-4242-a50d-5c4ff16dddfe"><strong>Trying to do way too much</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Golf course with flowers growing by edge" height="1299" width="2309" msid="112476064" hostid="261" sizebytes="438150"></div><p>Everyone is different, but playing too much golf can foreshorten an otherwise painless vacation and lead to embarrassing scores to boot.</p><p>I find it's sustainable to play a few rounds in a week, but more than 18 holes daily over a long weekend can cause some wear and tear on feet, hips, and shoulders.</p><p>Plan for breaks. Fortunately, many resorts have massages and spas available, too.</p><h2 id="7fc9e961-ba42-49ee-9aeb-b2cb3263f23b"><strong>Choosing bad golf partners</strong></h2><p>A few hours can feel like an eternity<em> </em>if you're playing with a crabby companion who has fits of cursing and club-throwing when things go south.</p><p>Golf is meant to be a collegial affair, not a cage match. Choose your companions wisely to avoid fisticuffs or frustration. The game is hard enough.</p><h2 id="36e89533-16a9-4d24-8ab7-db6ffcb49550">Assuming you have to stay at specific resorts just to access their golf courses</h2><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://thespectator.com/life/golf-renaissance/">Golf's recent renaissance</a> — combined with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-dynamic-pricing-surge-cost-fatigue-2024-7">inflated prices for almost everything</a> — means an outing can get expensive when you add up accommodations, green fees, and travel costs.</p><p>Fortunately, you don't actually have to stay at most resorts just to golf at them. When you can, book your tee time at a resort but stay somewhere more modest nearby to save money.</p><p>This can save you a few hundred dollars a day, if not more — and so can dining off of the property.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>California aerospace startup JetZero got the green light to fly its new "Pathfinder" aircraft.</li><li>The twinjet features a unique "blended-wing body" and is expected to carry up to 250 people.</li></ul><p>Aerospace companies across the globe are breaking from the norm of producing traditional "tube and wing" aircraft and instead looking into <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supersonic-jet-boom-overture-costs-technology-experts-skeptical-2024-4">futuristic technologies that will make flying more efficient</a> and eco-friendly.</p><p>There are already concepts like zero-emission electric aircraft, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supersonic-jet-boom-overture-costs-technology-experts-skeptical-2024-4">supersonic jets</a>, and even hypersonic ones. But the latest example of these new plane types is "Pathfinder" — a stealth bomber-looking jet designed by the California-based aerospace company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jetzero.aero/">JetZero</a>.</p><p>The twinjet features a unique "blended-wing body," or BWB, a design where the wing and fuselage are combined into one.</p><p>After years of development, JetZero has built a 1:8 <a target="_blank" href="https://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/Search/NNumberResult?NNumberTxt=221ZE">demonstrator</a>, and the Federal Aviation Administration just gave the funky-shaped craft the green light to fly, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/travel/jetzero-pathfinder-subscale-demonstrator/index.html">CNN</a> reported on Thursday.</p><p>JetZero confirmed the news to Business Insider, saying "flights will start in the coming months" to test the "stability and control characteristics of JetZero's blended wing body design, as well as the operation of its innovative landing gear system."</p><p>The FAA told BI on Thursday that it "does not comment on ongoing certification projects" and that "safety will dictate the timeline."</p><h2>JetZero is building a single-deck, very widebody airliner</h2><p>JetZero touts its future very widebody airliner as a "middle market" passenger airliner with space for up to 250 people, meaning its rows could stretch 15 or 20 seats across, JetZero cofounder and CEO Tom O'Leary told CNN.</p><p>The jet would be a replacement option for traditional twin-engine widebodies like the Boeing 767, for example, according to JetZero.</p><div type="image" title="The Pathfinder plane at the airport gate." height="542" width="1084" msid="109088890" hostid="261" sizebytes="42728"></div><p>"The jetliner can fit seamlessly into today's infrastructure," the company told BI. "Passenger capacity of a small widebody but the weight, and engine requirement, of a single-aisle jet."</p><p>Pathfinder also has military applications, with the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/3494520/daf-selects-jetzero-to-develop-blended-wing-body-aircraft-prototype/">US Air Force</a> awarding $235 million to JetZero in August to develop a commercial-scale demonstrator, which JetZero told BI it plans to build by 2027.</p><p>The company said it expects the certified airliner to enter the market as soon as 2030, which aviation analyst Bailey Miles at consulting firm AviationValues told CNN is "inconceivable" considering the complexities of the BWB design.</p><p>Still, he said the concept "holds immense promise as a game changer in the aviation industry."</p><h2><strong>The blended-wing body significantly reduces fuel burn but will face design challenges</strong></h2><p>JetZero said it chose this specific BWB design due to its carbon-reducing benefits.</p><p>According to the US Air Force, the all-in-one wing reduces drag by 30% and increases lift — effectively reducing fuel burn and increasing global reach.</p><div type="image" title="Military USAF version of the Pathfinder." height="2550" width="5100" msid="109088891" hostid="261" sizebytes="142410"></div><p>Moreover, JetZero said the engines will eventually be developed to run on hydrogen, which would be zero-emissions. In the interim, initial versions of Pathfinder would boast 50% less fuel burn using borrowed engines, like those from the Boeing 737, CNN reported.</p><p>University of Illinois aerospace professor Michael Bragg told Business Insider that the development of lighter yet still strong composite materials is key to reducing fuel burn on BWB aircraft designs such as Pathfinder.</p><p>He also said that engineers have distributed the load across the entire aircraft, which negates the "bending moment" between the tube and wings on a traditional airplane. The composite technology makes this new load bearing possible, Bragg told BI.</p><p>Despite Pathfinder's sound design on paper, Bragg said proving and certifying a brand-new aircraft concept is much more challenging than developing a traditionally shaped jetliner.</p><p>"The product is essentially a new airframe and flight controls married to existing systems already certified for commercial flight," JetZero told BI.</p><p>The classic tube-and-wing plane design dates back to the 1950s dawn of the jet age on aircraft like the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 and has continued to today on modern widebodies like the Airbus A350 and the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-777x-testbed-test-plane-aircraft-new-see-inside-photos-2024-3">future Boeing 777X.</a></p><div type="image" title="Interior concept on Pathfinder." height="614" width="1228" msid="109088893" hostid="261" sizebytes="43366"></div><p>Such time-tested technology has a successful track record, so there has been little incentive to change the conventional aircraft design over the decades as using proven technology minimizes safety risks and is easier for production, Bragg said.</p><p>"A lot of that is because of manufacturing," he said. "It's easy to manufacture a tube, and, although not as easy, it's a well-known process of how to build the wings to attach."</p><p>Beyond the assembly line, Bragg told BI that JetZero must ensure passengers are comfortable inside Pathfinder's unique shape.</p><p>For example, he told BI the pressurization inside the plane — which is what helps humans breathe at high altitudes — is difficult to design in the very widebody structure. And most of those 200+ passengers would be in the middle section without a window, which Bragg told BI could put off travelers.</p><p>JetZero says on its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jetzero.aero/why-jetzero">website</a> that its cabin is more efficient for boarding and deplaning, and will have space for every person's cabin luggage.</p><h2>Pathfinder is 100 years in the making</h2><p>JetZero's Pathfinder is poised to be a groundbreaking technology should it ever hit the market, but it's not a new idea.</p><p>Engineers were reported by CNN to have crafted a similar blended-wing shape some 100 years ago. Later, American aircraft industrialist and designer Jack Northrop built his famous "Flying Wing" aircraft in the 1940s, laying the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/once-forgotten-flying-wing-taken-over-the-us-bomber-fleet-2024-3">framework for the eventual B-2 bomber</a>.</p><div type="image" title="A B-2 bomber being refueled midair." height="1500" width="3000" msid="109088895" hostid="261" sizebytes="171450"></div><p>Development picked up in 1988 when McDonnell Douglas responded to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/beyond_tube-and-wing_tagged.pdf?emrc=2e23ac">NASA's</a> challenge to build more revolutionary aircraft designs, which was followed by MD's merger with Boeing in 1997 and the later building of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/armstrong/x-48-research-all-good-things-must-come-to-an-end/">X-48B/C BWBs</a> made jointly by NASA and Boeing.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-italian-alps-glacier-turns-pink-snow-eating-algae-2020-7">Pink</a>, red, purple, and green <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/one-third-of-americas-rivers-have-changed-color-since-1984-2021-1">algae blooms</a> are growing on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cameras-left-in-glacier-legendary-explorer-found-85-years-later-2022-10">glaciers</a> all over the planet.</li><li>Scientists who study snow and ice algae fear the blooms are a symptom of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-climate-change-hurts-our-food-shortages-vulnerable-to-crisis-2022-8">climate change</a>.</li></ul><p>Glaciers around the world are turning beautiful but menacing shades of pink, red, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/greeland-ice-sheet-turned-black-melts-faster-because-of-algae-2021-3">purple</a>, and green.</p><p>Eric Maréchal has seen it firsthand in the European Alps.</p><p>About 20 years ago, as he trekked through the mountains, he would occasionally run into other scientists who were giddy about finding rare "blood snow" — an overgrowth, or "bloom," of red algae that stains the glacier's surface.</p><p>Maréchal said the blood snow started becoming more common about 10 years ago. Now he sees bright pink and red algae blooms every year.</p><div type="image" title="alps pink snow italy glacier algae" height="1406" width="1875" msid="96135306" hostid="261" sizebytes="438032"></div><p>Much like soil, snow and ice are thriving with microorganisms.</p><p>Colorful blooms of microscopic algae have been documented on glaciers in nearly every continent. The "blood snow" algae has also been <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31074825/">found</a> in the Arctic, Antarctica, and mountains in both Americas.</p><p>Maréchal suspects snow and ice algae are on every glacier — vestige of a time <a href="https://www.climate.gov/news-features/climate-qa/whats-coldest-earths-ever-been#:~:text=The%20latest%20ice%20age%20peaked,over%20North%20America%20and%20Eurasia.">when ice covered the planet, 20,000 years ago</a>.</p><div type="image" title="eric marechal smiling in the mountains holding up a sample tube of pink snow" height="1529" width="2039" msid="96135308" hostid="261" sizebytes="209396"></div><p>"It's like the memory of the Ice Age, when the Earth was a snowball," Maréchal, who studies algae at the French National Centre for Scientific Research, told Insider.</p><p>"We have the chance when they are blooming, that everybody who goes hiking can experience them. So it's a wonder. At the same time, it's a marker of environmental change, because when they are blooming, it means that there is a strong disturbance of the ecosystem."</p><h2>Algae may be accelerating the disappearance of Earth's glaciers</h2><div type="image" title="man with pole stands next to bloom of green in a snowy field next to antarctica water mountains in background" height="2705" width="2000" msid="96135311" hostid="261" sizebytes="288666"></div><p>Scientists like Maréchal think these algae blooms are getting larger and more frequent as rising global temperatures melt glaciers worldwide. This is still a hypothesis, as there is no historical data on glacier algae and scientists haven't pinpointed exactly which nutrient or environmental condition is fueling the blooms.</p><p>But the researchers believe microalgae thrive in warmth and moisture.</p><div type="image" title="hand scoops pink snow with tube" height="1531" width="2042" msid="96135314" hostid="261" sizebytes="256432"></div><p>"The moment you have melting, the algae just are happy," Liane Benning, who leads a research project called <a href="https://www.deeppurple-ercsyg.eu/about">Deep Purple</a>, funded by the European Research Council, told Insider.</p><p>Her team is working to build a historical record of Greenland's purple ice algae, including how much it bloomed before humans began changing the climate.</p><div type="image" title="helicopter flies over black snow" height="1500" width="2000" msid="96135319" hostid="261" sizebytes="194856"></div><p>"They just need a little bit of water," she added. "And they have a party. They go and bloom."</p><div type="image" title="liane benning blonde woman wearing disposable gloves holds up inspects a cylinder of ice against blue sky" height="2107" width="1574" msid="96135323" hostid="261" sizebytes="164428"></div><p>It may be a party for the algae, but it's a slow funeral for the glacier.</p><p>Instead of the blinding white that reflects sunlight away from a glacier, algae blooms create vast patches of pink, red, purple, or even green.</p><p>Studies in the <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/15230430.2001.12003413">Himalayas</a>, <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?postID=632b77b0c4cc6f7e8a427dfe&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41467-018-03353-2">Greenland</a>, <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?postID=632b77b0c4cc6f7e8a427dfe&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fngeo3027">Alaska</a>, and across the <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?postID=632b77b0c4cc6f7e8a427dfe&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fncomms11968%23Sec2">Arctic</a> have found that these colorful blooms darken the surface of glaciers, causing them to absorb more sunlight and leading to new ice melt.</p><div type="image" title="satellite image shows snowy antarctica island with green algae blooms along coast" height="1539" width="2053" msid="96135326" hostid="261" sizebytes="127274"></div><p>"It's like a runaway effect," Benning said. "You make more algae; they bloom more; they melt more. They melt more; there is more blooms."</p><p>They're still gathering data to prove it, but if that runaway loop hypothesis is real, it's probably accelerating as Earth's glaciers disappear.</p><p>Already, the catastrophic impacts of ice loss are creeping across the planet — like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/antarctica-sea-level-rise-could-be-higher-than-thought-study-2021-5">sea-level rise</a> and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/most-of-the-himalayan-glaciers-will-melt-by-the-year-2100/articleshow/67849339.cms">dwindling of water sources</a> that are <a href="https://e360.yale.edu/features/himalayas-glaciers-climate-change">usually replenished by glaciers</a>. Those dangers could worsen faster than scientists have predicted, since their models don't account for microalgae.</p><h2>Glacier algae seems to be booming, but scientists have a lot to learn</h2><div type="image" title="man in winter clothes sinks pickaxe into green patch of ice" height="3174" width="4232" msid="96135329" hostid="261" sizebytes="535900"></div><p>The first written record of snow algae appears in writings from <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4917964/#b10">Aristotle</a>, the ancient Greek philosopher, who described seeing the red snow on Mount Olympus.</p><p>It was another two millennia before someone took a sample of glacier algae for scientific research, Maréchal said.</p><div type="image" title="two scientists squat in a field of pink snow on a mountain and take samples" height="1498" width="1998" msid="96135333" hostid="261" sizebytes="285158"></div><p>The algae species turning the Alps pink didn't get a scientific name until 2019. Before that, it was mistaken for a different species.</p><p>"We are incredibly late. Ice algae and snow algae are different types of microorganisms, and different fields of study, but they both affect glaciers.</p><p>"Most people when they go on a glacier and they look at that, they think it's just dirt," Benning said. "Only when we looked at them under the microscope, we realized: 'Wait a moment, this dirt is moving.'"</p><div type="image" title="purple algae microscope image little filaments" height="940" width="1253" msid="96135337" hostid="261" sizebytes="20414"></div><p>Scientists have learned that the algae take on their colorful pigments in order to protect themselves from UV damage from the brilliant glare of sunlight reflecting off white snow.</p><p>But there's still much to learn about these vibrant microalgae.</p><div type="image" title="pink snow strip in the middle of black snow" height="1500" width="2000" msid="96135339" hostid="261" sizebytes="170758"></div><p>"We still don't know much about the fundamental ecology of snow algae," Andrew Gray, who studies snow algae in Antarctica, told Insider in an email.</p><p>He added that the biggest snow algae mysteries include "where they are, why they are where they are, and how they're likely to respond to warming."</p><h2>As glaciers disappear, so might this ancient algae</h2><p>Both <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-10-06/north-america-heat-waves-led-to-record-ice-melt-in-greenland?cmpid=BBD100622_GREENDAILY&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_term=221006&amp;utm_campaign=greendaily">Greenland</a> and the <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/exclusive-glaciers-vanishing-record-rate-alps-following-heatwaves-2022-07-26/">Alps</a> saw record ice melt this summer.</p><div type="image" title="melting glacier in valley between mountains aerial view" height="1533" width="2044" msid="96135342" hostid="261" sizebytes="350250"></div><p>In May, Maréchal's team hiked up to the glaciers to take samples of the snow while it was still white. They needed a baseline to compare against later in the summer, once the red algae started blooming.</p><p>But when they reached their sampling site, expecting blankets of pure white snow, they found it was already pink with algae. When they returned a week later, all they found was bare earth. The snow had already melted away.</p><div type="image" title="bare mountaintop with small remnants of snow in little crevices" height="1500" width="2714" msid="96135469" hostid="261" sizebytes="779532"></div><p>The trend continued later in the year.</p><p>"This summer proved to be extremely difficult, because the snowpack and glacier proved to melt at an accelerated pace," Maréchal said.</p><p>The disappearance of glaciers is a compounding global catastrophe, with dire implications for our climate, sea levels, and water supplies.</p><p>Beneath all of that, if you zoom in to microscopic levels, global ice melt could also spell the disappearance of these ancient algae, which are likely the foundation of an under-researched ice ecosystem.</p><div type="image" title="antarctica snow slope colored green yellow pink with algae" height="1500" width="2000" msid="96135472" hostid="261" sizebytes="182442"></div><p>Ice and snow are full of "bacteria, fungi, virus, cyanobacteria, algae," and even insects, Gray said. Scientists don't know enough about those ecosystems yet to understand what that loss could mean.</p><p>What if ice and snow microbes play a role in keeping glaciers stable, or pulling carbon from the atmosphere?</p><p>In some places, like one Italian ski resort, covering the glacier with reflective white material can slow its melt and counteract the snow's color change. Everybody asks that question," Benning said. "We should bloody stop changing the climate."</p>

Preparations are afoot for a <keyword id="1261784" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-comet" source="Orion">green comet</keyword> which was last seen during the Stone Age about 50,000 years ago and will be seen once again at the end of this month.<br /><br />The best part of this <keyword id="71219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="celestial-show" source="Orion">celestial show</keyword> is that the <keyword id="158876" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="comet" source="Orion">comet</keyword> will be visible to the naked eye.<br /><br />The comet, named C/2022 E3 (ZTF), will light up the sky in the last week of January or early February.<br /><br />To have a better and clearer look, officials at the <keyword id="591591" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indira-gandhi-planetarium" source="Orion">Indira Gandhi Planetarium</keyword> are preparing to support the enthusiasts by providing them binoculars and a telescope to witness the cosmic show if bad weather does not hamper the view.<br /><br />According to astronomers, the best time to view the comet will be during the dawn in the northeast direction.<br /><br />"Comets are cosmic snowballs of frozen gases, rock, and dust that look like a bright star with a tail, moving around the sun as planets do. Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) will be closest to the Earth's orbit in January last week and will continue to be visible for around a week till early February," said Sumit Srivastava, senior scientific officer, Indira Gandhi planetarium.<br /><br />Srivastava said the comet would be closest to the earth's orbit in January-end. "It is a very rare occurrence as it might take another 50,000 years for humans to witness it again. As the comet will move near earth, people will be able to spot it in the northeast direction."<br /><br />"For people who want to make sure that they see a comet all they need to know is that comets have a streaking tail of dust and energized particles, as well as the glowing green coma surrounding it. It will be the comet's tail that will be visible to the naked eye," Srivastava said.<br /><br />He said not just astronomers but every sky watcher was excited about the celestial show. "It will be visible across the globe.
