The Cabinet on Thursday approved Rs 12,000 crore for the second phase of the <keyword id="1869019" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-energy-corridor" source="Orion">Green Energy Corridor</keyword> to facilitate grid integration and power evacuation of about 20 GW of renewable energy projects in seven states. Cabinet approves ₹12,000 crore for second phase of green energy corridor

The project aims to generate 4 GW (4,000 MW) – about three times the country’s total <keyword id="70990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Solar-power">solar power</keyword> capacity and on par with coal-fired mega projects. The new plant in the desert state will be set up and run by a joint venture of 5 public sector utilities, and the first phase should be functional within a couple of years. India currently has a total of 1,761 MW of grid-connected solar capacity, but aims to install around 20 GW by 2022.<br />

After implementing a solar park and a canal-based solar power generation plant, Gujarat has taken the lead in solar energy. It is now mulling 10,000 rooftop installations with 40-60 MW of installed capacity over the next 3 years. India is leveraging the option as well, and Gujarat is all set to build the country’s first tidal energy plant. The proposed unit will produce energy from ocean tides. Meanwhile, <keyword id="186689" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Maharashtra-Energy-Development-Agency">Maharashtra Energy Development Agency</keyword> (MEDA) is also eyeing the state’s 720 km long coastline to generate wave energy. The Maharashtra coast has an annual wave potential of 4-8 KW/metre of the length of the wave. But during the monsoon (June-August), it could be as high as 12-20 KW/metre.<br />

<strong>Offshore wind farms coming soon</strong><br /> The traditional, on-shore wind farms have been there for some time now and <keyword id="20154" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> currently holds the pole position at 7,162.3 MW. But the <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword> is now setting up the <keyword id="1889999" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Offshore-Wind-Energy-Authority">National Offshore Wind Energy Authority</keyword> (NOWA) that will act as the nodal agency for offshore wind projects in the country. NOWA will carry out surveys and resource assessments in Exclusive Economic Zones and also sign contracts with companies for project development in the territorial water.<br />

<b>Five Moves That Will Power India’s Green Shift</b>

New Delhi, Mar 12 () A Parliamentary panel has expressed dismay over Ministry of New &amp; Renewable Energy (MNRE) missing targets continuously and has suggested the ministry to identify weak areas and take corrective actions without any further delay.<p> The Ministry has continuously failed to achieve its yearly physical targets, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy said in a report tabled in Parliament. </p><p> The panel expressed concerns that the ministry may also find it difficult to achieve 175 GW (giga watt) target by 2022.</p><p>For the years 2017-18 and 2018-19, against the grid-connected renewable energy target of 14,445 MW and 15,355 MW, the Ministry could achieve 11,876.82 MW and 8519.52 MW, respectively. Similarly, during the year 2019-20 (up to January, 2020), 8,004.64 MW could be installed against the target of 11,852 MW. it said.</p><p>The committee said it "feels that with continuous non-achievement of the assigned yearly physical targets, the Ministry may find it difficult to achieve 175 GW by 2022. The committee highly dissatisfied with the performance of the Ministry and expect the Ministry to improve its target achievement in the coming year."</p><p>The committee has recommended the MNRE to identify the weak areas on the basis of its performance during the previous years and take corrective actions without any further delay. It should also ensure continuous monitoring of the implementing agencies.</p><p>Physical achievement with respect to family type biogas plants is also poor as the Ministry could not achieve the target in any of the year from 2016-17 onwards. Given the time bound target of 175 GW by 2022, such performances are disappointing.</p><p>On budgetary allocation for the renewable sector, the committee said an allocation of Rs 9,523.04 crore was sought by the Ministry for the year 2020-21, but only Rs 5753.00 crore have been sanctioned.</p><p>"In view of the gigantic targets assigned to the Ministry, allocation of 40 per cent less funds as compared to the amount sought seems unjustifiable.  Keeping in view the allocation of less than required amount and the increased targets assigned to the Ministry, the Committee recommends that additional funds should be provided to the Ministry at RE (revised estimates) stage," it said.</p><p>On Green Energy Corridor Project, it said, the project was supposed to be completed by March 2020, but commissioning schedule has been extended till December 2020.</p><p>The Committee has recommended that the Ministry should work on mission mode to get the Green Energy Corridor Project ready within the reasonable time frame in order to avoid grid congestion and to facilitate integration and evacuation of large scale renewable power capacity.</p>"The Ministry should eschew playing ducks and drakes with an important project like Green Energy Corridor," the committee said. Airy yet structurally strong, their floor-to-ceiling glass walls provide plenty of light and make people feel almost like they're outside.</p><p>But on sunny days, the windows can create glare or make glass buildings uncomfortably hot, which leads offices to jack up the AC and waste energy.</p><p>A new glass office building in West Philadelphia, called <a href="http://www.30universityplace.com/">3.0 University Place</a>, aims to eliminate that issue. Its windows will tint automatically based on the level of brightness, letting the workers inside enjoy the view while saving electricity.</p><p>The 189,000-square-foot building, designed by The Steward Partnership, is set to be completed by the end of 2018. Much like light-adaptive lenses in glasses (better known as Transitions), all of the building's windows will have smart sensors that can detect sunlight and change color accordingly<span>. At present, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (<keyword id="19908646" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="BPCL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BPCL" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="BPCL">BPCL</keyword>) owns about 14 per cent of India's oil <keyword id="20064251" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="refining-capacity" source="keywords">refining capacity</keyword> and about a quarter of the fuel retailing network. It plans to grow these businesses while foraying into newer areas. <br /><br />The firm is now implementing the first phase of a multi-decade aspirational journey in the form of '<keyword id="22826627" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="project-Aspire" source="keywords">Project Aspire</keyword>' - its five-year strategic framework that is based on two fundamental pillars - 'Nurturing the Core' and 'Investing in Future Big Bets', he said in the company's latest annual report. <br /><br />"Our mid-term strategy is on a continuum. While we remain committed to growing our core businesses, which include refining and marketing <keyword id="20037698" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="petroleum-products" source="keywords">petroleum products</keyword> and upstream, we are equally focused on our big bets comprising petrochemicals, gas, green energy, non-fuel retail, and digital. <br /><br />"Project Aspire, with a planned capex outlay of around Rs 1.70 lakh crore over five years, will enable us to create long-term value for our stakeholders while preserving our planet for future generations," he said. <br /><br />"A cornerstone of our long-term strategy, Project Aspire, with a Rs 1.70 trillion investment, marks the initial phase of our multi-decade odyssey to shape the energy of tomorrow. This, coupled with our robust balance sheet, fuels our ambition to lead the <keyword id="19951336" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="energy-transition" source="keywords">energy transition</keyword>." <br /><br />The company is targeting net zero carbon emissions from its operations by 2040. <br /><br />"BPCL has drawn a net-zero roadmap, which encompasses renewable power, green hydrogen, compressed biogas, carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS), efficiency improvement and the offsets procurements. This would require a phased capital outlay of approximately Rs 1 lakh crore till 2040, and the company is geared for the same," he said. <br /><br />The firm's bet on continuing investing in core businesses is based on the premise that India's booming economy will drive a 4-5 per cent annual increase in energy demand and petroleum product consumption. Also, the demand for major petrochemical products is expected to rise by 7-8 per cent annually. <br /><br />"This presents a strategic opportunity to expand refining capacity alongside the development of integrated petrochemical complexes," he said. <br /><br />BPCL is implementing new petrochemical projects at two of its three oil refineries. A Rs 49,000 crore ethylene cracker project is being implemented at the Bina refinery in Madhya Pradesh, alongside raising oil refining capacity from the current 7.8 million tonnes to 11 million tonnes annually by 2029. A polypropylene project is being set up at Kochi refinery in Kerala by 2027. <br /><br />"To meet the anticipated demand beyond our planned expansions in Bina and Kochi, we are actively evaluating options for setting up additional integrated refining and petrochemical capacities within the next 5-7 years," Krishnakumar said without disclosing either the investments or the location of such a project. <br /><br />Andhra Pradesh is being speculated as the likely site after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP and regional party TDP stormed to power in the state in recently concluded assembly elections. TDP has been demanding the implementation of a refinery-cum-petrochemical complex that was promised as part of the package when the state was split more than a decade back. <br /><br />"Our investment in the petrochemical project is consistent with our aspiration of becoming a dominant player in India's petrochemical growth story," Krishnakumar said. <br /><br />On energy transition, he said BPCL is targeting to build 2 gigawatts (GW) of <keyword id="19895602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="renewable-energy" source="keywords">renewable energy</keyword> capacity by 2025 and 10 GW by 2035. <br /><br />"We are investing nearly Rs 1,000 crore to establish two 50 MW captive wind power plants in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, which will support our refineries in Mumbai and Bina." <br /><br />The firm is also investing around Rs 300 crore in 72 MWp of solar project in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. <br /><br />"Concomitantly, we are executing green hydrogen projects aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These projects include a 5 MW electrolyser plant at Bina refinery and a green hydrogen refuelling station with an indigenously developed electrolyser at Kochi," he noted. <br /><br />BPCL, he said, is committed to supporting the transition to electric mobility through a robust and accessible charging infrastructure. <br /><br />The company has installed over 3,000 charging stations, including fast chargers for cars and two-wheelers. 900 fast chargers are installed across 120 highway corridors, which helps address the range, discovery and time anxiety of electric vehicle (EV) owners. <br /><br />"Over the next five years, we aim to install 4-wheeler fast chargers at approximately 6,000 retail outlets across 400 highway corridors, prioritising high-traffic corridors like the Golden Quadrilateral and N-S/E-W highways," he said. <br /><br />On biofuels, he said BPCL sells petrol with 20 per cent ethanol blend at 4,279 out of its over 22,000 petrol pumps. <br /><br />It is also building compressed biogas plants using municipal solid waste to make gas that can be used as CNG in automobiles. <br /><br />The firm is also exploring partnerships in the arena. <br /><br />"These combined efforts, along with the upcoming commissioning of a bio-ethanol refinery, positions BPCL as a key player in India's transition to a greener fuel mix, creating a robust ecosystem for the adoption of cleaner fuels across the country," he added. <br /><br />BPCL is establishing a corporate venture capital fund to invest directly in promising startups. <br /><br />"In order to thrive in this complex and challenging business landscape, we will leverage our agility and focus on operational excellence to ensure continued success. Safety and reliability will remain our top priorities, guiding all our actions. We are committed to upholding the highest standards of corporate governance," he added. <br /><br />He said the energy sector of India stands at an inflection point. <br /><br />"The nation has an ambitious vision of becoming a USD 30 trillion developed economy by 2047. 'Viksit Bharat @2047' will necessitate an almost fourfold increase in primary energy demand." <br /><br />India's exponential growth trajectory will propel it to a pivotal role in the global energy market, accounting for roughly 12 per cent of world energy consumption by 2047. <br /><br />"The key strategic objectives for India in the energy sector will entail significant expansion in refining capacities, raising the share of gas in the energy basket from about 6 per cent to 15 per cent, establishing leadership in petrochemical exports, and sharply reducing energy imports from current levels of 47 per cent to below 25 per cent by 2030 and to zero by 2047," he said. <br /><br />India is targeting 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity, sourcing half of its energy needs from renewables, reducing carbon emissions by 1 billion tonnes and lowering carbon intensity by 45 per cent by 2030 with the ultimate goal of net-zero emissions by 2070. <br /><br />"Building on its strong Indian energy presence, BPCL aspires to meet 7-10 per cent of the nation's primary energy demand by 2047," he said.

BPCL planning Rs 1.7 lakh crore spend to expand core business, new energy foray over next five years

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Budget+2015">Budget 2015</a> allocated Rs. 4,500 Crores to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=MNRE">MNRE</a> (Ministry of New and <keyword id="34553" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="renewable-energy">Renewable Energy</keyword>). This time the Ministry wants more. This time they’ve sought over Rs 10,000 Crores, a senior official in the ministry told reporters. Obviously, last year’s budgetary allocation was insufficient. <br />

"Different schemes which have taken off are Viability Gap Funding of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=MNRE">MNRE</a> and green energy corridor," the official said. <br />

The government has 175 Gigawatts as target for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=renewable+energy">renewable energy</a> generation by 2022. Of this 100 GW is planned to be Solar power, 60 GW Wind power, 10 GW from Bio-mass and 5 GW from Hydro-electric power.<br />

All of this would require investment of around $150 billion in investment over the next seven years. However, the Central government's budget allocation for solar energy for the current financial year is merely 0.45% of the required investment.<br />

This December, a Parliamentary panel mentioned that the insufficient capital allocation can hamper India’s 175 GW <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=renewable+energy">renewable energy</a> capacity ambitions. However, there was no real mention of exact capital requirements. It only said that sufficient funds must be allocated to ensure that the lack of funds don’t come in the way of India’s ambitious <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=renewable+energy">renewable energy</a> plans.<br />

"We will also apply for a diamond rating for our buildings by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). Metro's total power consumption can be reduced further with better engineering practices, sleek design, recycle and reuse,” Yadav told ET.<br />

Supplementary power connection will only be used as backup or when there will be a glitch. The corridor’s power consumption estimated by officials is less than 12 MW. . If there is a surplus, Metro will route it to the conventional power grid and claim a rebate on its power usage, cutting operational costs.<br />

"Each of the stations will be powered by its own green energy. Rooftops of stations will have solar panels and the buildings will fitted with LED bulbs. The two sub-stations that will supply power for trains running on the corridor will also support solar panels,” Yadav told ET.<br />

DMRC is building the corridor and is also recycling construction waste. "Wasted concrete is being used to make kerbstones and tiles, which will be used at stations. We are also using wasted iron for grilles and railings of stations. We are using fly ash in construction, preserving top soil. The water used in our train depot shall be 100% recycled. It will be a zero-discharge facility,” Yadav told ET.<br />

Delhi Metro is going to build India’s greenest metro corridor. This is how they plan to do it

New Delhi, Dec 3 () Sterlite Power on Tuesday said it has acquired Lakadia-Vadodara Transmission Project, a green energy corridor project from PFC Consulting Ltd.
<p> Earlier, the project was won by Sterlite Power. Now the special purpose vehicle incorporated for the execution of the project by PFC Consulting, has been formally acquired by Sterlite Power, a company statement said.
</p><p> Power Finance Corporation arm PFC Consulting is the nodal agency for auctioning power transmission projects in the country.
</p><p> Sterlite won this project through an e-reverse auction process under tariff-based competitive bidding process on July 16, 2019 and will execute it under the Build, Own, Operate and Maintain (BOOM) model for 35 years in Gujarat.
</p><p> The project is aligned to enable the country's renewable energy target of installing 175 GW of renewable energy by 2022 and connects the wind energy zones of Bhuj in Gujarat to the load centres in Gujarat and Maharashtra, the statement added.
</p><p> The project involves laying 350 kms of 765 kV double-circuit transmission line connecting 765/400 kV Lakadia substation to Vadodara substation in Gujarat, in a timeframe of 18 months.
</p><p> "This is another resounding success for Sterlite Power. We are proud to be part of this energy-transition journey of the country and are fully geared to contribute to it with this and more such projects," Sterlite Power Managing Director Pratik Agarwal said.
</p><p> With the acquisition of this project, the company has increased its domestic footprint in inter-state transmission projects to 22 states with a cumulative transmission line network of more than 9,000 ckms and 16,000 MVA transformation capacity.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Singapore is trying to fight rising temperatures partly by making its buildings greener, literally.</li><li>This involves covering rooftops and vertical facades with gardens.</li></ul><p>As the world heats up — and the urban <a href="https://www.epa.gov/green-infrastructure/reduce-urban-heat-island-effect#:~:text=%22Urban%20heat%20islands%22%20occur%20when,heat%2Drelated%20illness%20and%20mortality." target="_blank" rel="noopener">built environment makes things worse</a> — Singapore is at the leading edge of efforts to cool cities.</p><p>The hot and humid city-state is among the most densely populated in the world, and it's seeing its temperatures <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrQ9zjvmD6k" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rise particularly quickly</a>. The country approaches this task in various ways — from designing buildings to facilitate airflow to painting rooftops with reflective coats. One central strategy is to literally make the city greener by covering rooftops and the facades of buildings with plants.</p><p>Cities often suffer from the <a href="https://climate.mit.edu/explainers/urban-heat-islands" target="_blank" rel="noopener">urban heat-island effect</a>, when the built environment makes cities hotter than neighboring rural areas. Buildings and asphalt absorb heat, while cars and other vehicles emit even more heat, and a lack of greenery in cities exacerbates the issues. Plants cool buildings and cities by absorbing sunlight, creating shade, and releasing water that cools the air. Of course, they also absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to the climate crisis. </p><p>Under its Skyrise Greenery Incentive Scheme, Singapore pays property owners up to 50% of the cost of installing green rooftops and facades. This amounts to up to $200 a square meter for roofs and $500 a square meter for vertical plantings, <a href="https://skyrisegreenery.nparks.gov.sg/incentive-scheme/about/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the government</a>.</p><p>The greenery also reduces buildings' carbon footprint and saves property owners on air conditioning and other energy costs. And the green buildings can attract tourists looking to <a href="https://www.alajode.com/ecotourism-in-singapore/#7-8-explore-singapore%E2%80%99s-green-buildings-" target="_blank" rel="noopener">patronize eco-friendly businesses</a>. </p><div type="image" title="Singapore's three-towered Marina Bay Sands Hotel has plantings on its balconies." height="640" width="1280" msid="103790582" hostid="261" sizebytes="114272"></div><p>Many of these plant-covered structures have received international attention. One skyscraper that opened in Singapore last year has <a href="https://www.cnn.com/style/article/capitaspring-singapore-skyscraper-biophilic/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more than 80,000 trees and plants</a> on it. The city-state's Nanyang Technological University has <a href="https://projects.archiexpo.com/project-23031.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">been celebrated</a> for its green roofs. And <a href="https://www.archivibe.com/kampung-admiralty-by-woha-wins-world-building-of-the-year-award-at-world-architecture-festival-2018/#:~:text=Architecture%20Festival%202018-,Kampung%20Admiralty%20by%20WOHA%20wins%20World%20Building%20of%20the,at%20World%20Architecture%20Festival%202018&amp;text=Our%20congratulations%20goes%20to%20WOHA,their%20Kampung%20Admiralty%20in%20Singapore!" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a mixed-used complex with extensive green roofs won</a> the 2018 World Architecture Festival's award for building of the year. </p><p>This is all part of Singapore's decadeslong effort to <a href="https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/history/events/a7fac49f-9c96-4030-8709-ce160c58d15c" target="_blank" rel="noopener">become the "Garden City."</a> Its <a href="https://www.greenplan.gov.sg/targets" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Green Plan 2030</a> sets out a series of ambitious environmental goals, including doubling the rate at which trees are planted between 2020 and 2030, making at least <a href="https://wedocs.unep.org/bitstream/handle/20.500.11822/34976/SGB.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">80% of its buildings green</a>, and creating 200 hectares of green roofs by 2030. Singapore is also investing in a network of "green corridors," streets lined thickly with trees that also help to provide shade and moisture, naturally air conditioning the city. Some <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/06/03/health/green-roofs-singapore-buses-intl/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">public buses</a> have even adopted green roofs.</p><p>Singapore is not the only place investing heavily in planting more greenery to reduce temperatures and boost energy efficiency. The city of Basel, Switzerland, has been incentivizing green roof construction since the 1990s, and as of 2019, it had <a href="https://climate-adapt.eea.europa.eu/en/metadata/case-studies/green-roofs-in-basel-switzerland-combining-mitigation-and-adaptation-measures-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more green roof space per capita</a> than any place on earth. Toronto <a href="https://www.canadianarchitect.com/canadian-precedent-spurs-green-roof-legislation-for-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed a law in 2009</a> requiring that buildings of a certain size have green roofs.</p>

Why so many buildings in Singapore are covered in plants

<p>If you want to see the future of renewable energy in the U.S., you should check out the large container sitting next to a nondescript office building off the I-95 corridor in <keyword id="105921" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Maryland">Maryland</keyword>.</p>
<p>Inside of it is a system that helps solve one of the key problems in the renewable industry: how to store power for longer periods of time in an economical way. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-solar-surged-in-america-2013-10">We've told you how solar and wind demand is booming</a>. But sometimes it's not windy, or the sun isn't shining.</p>
<p>This disrupts the ability of renewable generators to provide a steady stream of current.</p>
<p>Now, the headquarters of Konterra, previously best known as the Laurel, Md.-based property developer serving the DC metro area, is home to one of the first renewable energy storage systems in the U.S. capable of not only storing generation when the sun's not shining, but also delivering power to the local electric grid.</p>
<p>Here's what it looks like:</p>

<p>The parts to focus on are the inverter, the batteries, and the transformer.</p>
<p>The inverter is used to convert the electricity generated by Konterra's new rooftop <keyword id="45681" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Solar">solar</keyword> panels, which come with the system, into a usable current to power either the building or the local grid.</p>
<p>The battery, which is actually just an off-the-shelf lithium ion package, can be tapped by the local grid to temporarily charge or discharge excess power in the surrounding area. </p>
<p>Finally, the transformer <span>can remove the Konterra building from the grid in case of a regional power outage, providing up to four hours-worth of backup supply.</span></p>
<p>Current renewable storage set ups are pretty expensive. This system helps make it more economical. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/three-factors-driving-the-marriage-of-solar-and-energy-storage">As GreenTechMedia's Martin LaMonica writes</a>, the company that designed the whole system, <a href="solargridstorage.com">Solar Grid Storage</a>, actually gets paid for helping the grid operator balance power supply and demand - money that would otherwise be going to natural gas plants.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"When you can really squeeze value out of [solar and storage], it will revolutionize not just solar, but the way the grid operates," the head of Standard Solar, which developed the whole project, told LaMonica. "You'll see lots of distributed generation and microgrids, and the grid will be more of a backup."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">PJM, the grid operator for the mid-Atlantic, is so far the only major network in the country where this kind of setup, called Regulation Service, is possible. Grid operators, and the electricity industry in general, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/utilities-struggling-with-rise-of-solar-2013-9">is notoriously conservative. </a></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">But <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/first-solar-shares-are-surging-2013-11">given where the renewable market is going</a>, it seems they probably can't afford to be so for much longer.</span></p>

The Future Of Renewable Energy Can Now Be Found Inside A Shipping Container Sitting Off The I-95 Corridor

<p>At the county level, America is a tremendously unequal place. The median household income in the poorest county (Wilcox County, Alabama) was $22,126 in 2012. In Falls Church, Virginia, where highly educated defense contractors and federal government workers cluster, the median income last year was $121,250, more than five times higher.</p>
<p>What's most startling, though, in new <a href="http://www.census.gov/did/www/saipe/data/index.html?eml=gd&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery">local income and poverty data</a> released this week by the Census Bureau, is the way these opposing poles of poverty and wealth in America concentrate geographically. The corridor of metropolitan statistical areas that runs from Washington, D.C., through Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston includes 37 of these top-earning counties (where the median family takes home at least $75,000 a year). Zoom in to the region, and it shows a kind of wealth belt unmatched even on the West Coast.</p>
<p>Poverty is similarly concentrated in the American South. Seventy-nine percent of the poorest counties in the country (where the median family makes less than $35,437) are located in the South:</p>

<p>This latest Census release also slices data by school district, revealing the below picture of poverty rates by district among school-aged children 5 to 17. <p>Relative to 2007, 33 percent of all U.S. counties saw statistically significant increases in poverty by 2012 (across all age groups), deepening the challenges in places that had been struggling even before the recession. Over this same time period, however, one part of the country in particular saw an actual increase in median incomes, and it wasn't the traditionally wealthy Northeast corridor.</p>
<p>It was the Upper Great Plains. Statistically significant increases in median income, from 2007-2012, are shown in green:</p>

America's Wealth Is Staggeringly Concentrated in the Northeast Corridor [MAPS]

<keyword id="48503" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="alstom" source="Orion">Alstom</keyword>, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has been awarded the contract to design, manufacture, supply, test, and commission 312 standard gauge metro cars for <keyword id="6366797" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="delhi-metro" source="Orion">Delhi Metro</keyword> Phase IV expansion by the <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).<br /><br /> The order worth EUR312 million (Rs 2,643 crore approx.) includes the design and manufacturing of 234 standard gauge metro cars for Line 7 extension, which is 12.558 km of Pink line on the Mukundpur- Maujpur corridor and, the Line 8 extension, which is 28.92 km of Magenta line for the Janakpuri West - RK Ashram corridor, according to a statement from Alstom.<br /><br /> Alstom will also design and manufacture of 78 standard gauge metro cars for the 23.622 km Silver line between Aerocity and Tughlakabad, including 15-year maintenance of these 78 cars.<br /><br /> The statement said that Alstom would supply its Metropolis trainsets for this order. Metropolis trains offer a unique design, a wide range of configurations and ensure the highest performance due to the perfect combination of proven and reliable components and innovations, the company said. With its extensive track record, low lifecycle costs, and keen focus on passenger experience, Alstom said its Metropolis metros set the standard around the world.<br /><br /> Talking about the new contract, Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India Cluster, said that "Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) is amongst the largest urban clusters in the world. Faced with the realities of climate change, such megacities need reliable and sustainable public transport solutions. Alstom is pleased to continue the partnership with Delhi Metro, one of Asia's largest rapid transit systems. Our trains have a high recyclability of all materials and low-weight design to reduce energy consumption that will greatly contribute to minimising environmental impact in the region."<br /><br /> Alstom said it had delivered more than 800 metro cars that are in service for the Delhi Metro network. The new trains will be built at Alstom's largest urban rolling stock manufacturing site in Sricity (<keyword id="37102" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="andhra-pradesh" source="Orion">Andhra Pradesh</keyword>), which has a strong portfolio of delivering for major domestic and international projects, according to the company.<br /><br /> Currently, the Delhi Metro network consists of about 391 km with 286 stations.
