By 2002, fewer than 100 Iberian lynx remained in Spain, and they were completely wiped out in Portugal. </p><p>But conservation efforts have brought them back from the brink of extinction. The elusive <keyword id="11897851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="animals" source="Orion">animals</keyword> have even started to overlap with humans again.</p><p>The young lynx in the photo above grew up in an abandoned hayloft in Spain's Sierra Morena mountains. Photographer Sergio Marijuán set up his camera amongst the hay and waited for months to get the shot: the lynx poised in the doorway, its back legs outstretched, peering directly into the camera.</p><p>The image is a frontrunner in the prestigious <keyword id="11893490" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="wildlife" source="Orion">Wildlife</keyword> Photographer of the Year contest, which is developed and produced by the Natural History Museum in London. The competition aims to showcase the diversity and fragility of the planet's wildlife. </p><p>This year, the contest drew more entries than ever before - more than 50,000 photos from photographers in 95 countries. </p><p>"These extraordinary images showcase the rich diversity of life on Earth and spark curiosity and wonder," Doug Gurr, director of the Natural History Museum, said in a press release. "Telling the story of a planet under pressure, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition illuminates the urgent challenges we face and the collective action we need to take."</p><p>The museum will announce the winning images in October, but on Tuesday, it released a small sample of its top picks. Below are nine of the "highly commended" frontrunners.</p><h2>Several photos show predators struggling</h2><div type="image" title="four cheetahs grimace swimming against roiling brown waters" height="1373" width="2061" msid="85821050" hostid="261"></div><p>In January 2020, these male cheetahs braved rough waters to reach new hunting grounds on the other side of Kenya's swollen Talek River. Photographer Buddhilini de Soyza followed them along the opposite bank for hours as they chose their crossing point.</p><p>"A couple of times the lead cheetah waded into the river, only to turn back," de Soyza said in a statement about the photo.</p><p>The animals avoided calmer stretches of water, possibly fearing crocodiles, before leaping in and paddling across. De Soyza feared they wouldn't survive the raging river, which was high from unusually heavy rain. But all five cheetahs (one didn't fit into the photo) made it across.</p><h2>This gecko fought for its life but wound up in a death coil</h2><div type="image" title="green snake wrapped around blue gecko with red spots gripping snake's head in its mouth" height="1374" width="1099" msid="85821051" hostid="261"></div><p>Photographer Wei Fu was taking pictures of birds at a park in Bangkok, Thailand when he heard loud croaking and hissing. He followed the ruckus and found a red-spotted tokay gecko perched in a tree, blaring warning sounds at a golden tree snake that was slowly descending towards it from a higher branch.</p><p>The snake launched itself at the gecko, biting it and injecting venom. The lizard clamped its powerful jaws around the serpent's head in self-defense.</p><p>They wrestled, but after a few minutes, the snake had wound itself around the gecko, squeezed its life out, and begun the slow process of swallowing it whole.</p><h2>A clumsy young white-tailed kite bungled a pass</h2><div type="image" title="white bird with wings extended mid-air holds mouse in claw while smaller bird with brown speckles reaches claws up to take the mouse" height="787" width="671" msid="85821052" hostid="261"></div><p>The California bird was trying to take a live mouse from the claws of its father while hovering in mid-air, according to photographer Jack Zhi. This is how the juvenile must eat until it can hunt for itself. The exchange is also practice for future courtship, when a male bird offers prey to a female.</p><p>This gold-speckled youngster had only been flying for two days. It clumsily tried to reach its claws upward to take the mouse, but didn't quite get the prize. It learned quickly, though, and circled around to grab its prey from behind the older bird.</p><h2>Other predators were more successful</h2><div type="image" title="lion dripping with fresh blood stares into camera" height="752" width="564" msid="85821053" hostid="261"></div><p>This young lioness in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park began eating her wildebeest prey while it was still alive. With one paw holding the struggling animal down, and bright red blood dripping from her muzzle, she looked right into photographer Lara Jackson's camera. </p><h2>A 10-year-old photographed this parakeet feeding its young</h2><div type="image" title="bright green parakeet greets three green chicks poking their heads out of a tree" height="786" width="524" msid="85821054" hostid="261"></div><p>Gagana Mendis Wickramasinghe was stuck at home when Sri Lanka went into lockdown in the spring of 2020. So he passed his time sitting on his parents' bedroom balcony with his older brother, watching a pair of rose-ringed parakeets raise their young.</p><p>The parakeets had chosen a dead areca-nut palm tree that Gagana's parents had left standing to attract wildlife. The parakeets' hole was eye-level with their balcony, which gave Gagana and his brother plenty of time to experiment with their cameras and trade lenses to snap pictures of the vibrant green birds.</p><h2>On an island within an island, a red fox scavenged for dead salmon</h2><div type="image" title="fox creeps through dark shallow waters" height="831" width="1248" msid="85821056" hostid="261"></div><p>This animal is one of two foxes living on a small island in Karluk Lake, which is nested in Alaska's Kodiak Island. Photographer Jonny Armstrong followed the fox for several days as she pounced at birds, ate berries, and even nipped at the heels of a young brown bear.</p><p>Then a storm began to roll in, bringing a somber backdrop. As the vixen scanned the shallows for sockeye salmon that had died after spawning, Armstrong laid on his stomach at the water's edge to capture her focused gaze.</p><h2>Narwhal shrimp may communicate via their antennae</h2><div type="image" title="narwhal shrimps drift in feathery blue coral with their antennas touching" height="831" width="1248" msid="85821057" hostid="261"></div><p>When Laurent Ballesta went diving with his camera off France's Mediterranean coast, he stumbled upon a bizarre scene. Thousands of narwhal shrimp were swaying in the coral more than 250 feet below the surface. "Limit what's behind you. "Campfire shots are also not recommended, as it's difficult to frame people around a fire, and the smoke and glow affects lighting."</p><p>The photographer added that lit candles and bright lamps should also be moved out of frame to prevent unsightly bright spots or shadows.</p><p>But if you really want to take pictures in front of the lit-up <keyword id="8206" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Christmas">Christmas</keyword> tree, just make sure that the subjects don't stand too close to the lights. </p><h2><strong>Keep group poses natural, and avoid waving</strong></h2><p>Rather than arranging your loved ones in a stiff group pose, aim for ones that feel natural. </p><p>"Hugging, holding hands, and otherwise engaging with one another usually appears natural," Cramer told Insider. "Make sure everyone is looking at the camera and mind all arm and leg positioning." </p><p>You can try posing groups around festive dining tables or capturing semi-posed pictures of people decorating a tree, walking outside, <a href="https://www.insider.com/holiday-gifts-for-less-than-5-dollars-2017-12">or carrying presents.</a> But make sure to avoid distracting movements, like waving.</p><p>"Raising an arm or waving is not only distracting, but it may block another person's face in the photo," she added. </p><h2><strong>Wearing matching colors or patterns can tie the photo together</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="matching pjs christmas family" height="576" width="769" msid="79287025" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>One way to make your photos look cohesive and festive is to coordinate outfits. </p><p>"For example, if one person is wearing red plaid, make sure other family members are also wearing red or a <a href="https://www.insider.com/color-combinations-that-look-good-together-2018-8">complementary color</a>," Cramer said. "Solid colors such as white, red, green, gold, and black are best."</p><p>Additionally, don't be afraid to incorporate textures by wearing a shearling jacket or polar fleece, but avoid metallic or sequined clothing as the shine can be distracting.</p><h2><strong>Make sure the border of the photo has enough space for framing</strong></h2><p>If you're planning on having your holiday photos printed and framed, you need to be mindful of the position of your subjects' heads. </p><p>"Remember to leave enough space above people in the photo," Cramer said. "Otherwise, you won't be able to frame the photo without the frame cutting across the tops of their heads."</p><p>A good rule of thumb is to allow for at least two to three "heads" of space at the top of the photo.</p><h2><strong>Remove distracting background items</strong></h2><p>For a clean, professional-looking photograph, try to keep background items <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-make-your-home-peaceful-interior-designers">to a minimum. </a></p><p>"Be aware of any background items that make the photo appear too busy or as if the background item is part of someone's shoulder," Cramer told Insider. </p><p>Shiny or moving objects, such as chrome fixtures or televisions, should be eliminated from photo backgrounds. <ul class="summary-list"><li>I live in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/visit-scotland-mistakes-tourists-make-glasgow-2023-10">Edinburgh, Scotland,</a> where popular movies like "Avengers: Infinity War" are filmed.</li><li>Since the release of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/avengers-endgame-cast-hero-transformation-2019-4">Marvel movie</a>, several other production companies have flocked here. </li></ul><p>While attending the University of Edinburgh in 2017, I became one of few real-world people who could use the excuse that the Avengers' attempt to save the city made me late to class.</p><p>My town was a filming location for several scenes in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/avengers-infinity-war-review-is-it-good-2018-4">"Avengers: Infinity War,"</a> and it wasn't uncommon to stumble upon a set.</p><p>My typical walk to campus had multiple disruptions — starting at the train station with mazes of boxes shrouded in green-screen walls.</p><p>Main drags like Cockburn Street and the Royal Mile were almost entirely blocked off by Wanda and Vision's thwarted romantic getaway.</p><p>Now Edinburgh seems to be a hot spot for film crews. But, as a resident, the luster of celebrity sightings and film crews is starting to wear off.</p><h2>The Marvel film crews certainly turned heads in the small city</h2><div type="image" title="shot of a film production set in the middle of a train station in Edinburgh Scotland" height="2268" width="3024" msid="107534799" hostid="261"></div><p>Like London, Edinburgh is a capital city, but it is much smaller, and its screentime up until the late 2010s had been minuscule in comparison.</p><p>At the time, major movies and TV shows set in Edinburgh were few and far between, with "Trainspotting"<em> </em>(1996) perhaps being the most synonymous with the city — for better or worse.</p><p>It was certainly jarring to see <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/captain-america-4-new-world-order-details-infomation-2022-9">Captain America</a> arrive, ready for battle, at my usual stop at Waverley Train Station on a random day in 2017. It made me laugh, especially after I noticed the mysterious, boxed-off set and intimidating "No photography" signs.</p><p>One day, I even saw Wanda get thrown through the window of Laila's, a real café on Cockburn Street.</p><p>In this small city, the stunt immediately raised alarm bells. Judging by their screams, several onlookers probably thought there'd been a real accident.</p><h2>There have been a lot of production companies here since Marvel wrapped</h2><div type="image" title="wanda standing in the window of a cafe with her hands glowing red in avengers infinity wars" height="1518" width="2024" msid="107534801" hostid="261"></div><p>I've never read a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/all-the-best-comic-book-movies-nominated-for-awards-2020-1">comic book</a>, but when "Infinity War" premiered in 2018, I was curious and delighted to see my city represented on the big screen.</p><p>And after "Avengers" wrapped, major projects, such as "Eurovision" (2020), "F9" (2021), and Amazon Prime's "Good Omens<em>,"</em> used Edinburgh as a key filming location.</p><p>Upcoming releases — Netflix's "One Day"<em> </em>series and Guillermo Del Toro's "Frankenstein"<em> </em>adaptation — are using my city as a backdrop, too.</p><p>Having crews here might <a target="_blank" href="https://www.motionpictures.org/what-we-do/driving-economic-growth/">boost the local economy</a>, but it still comes with drawbacks for residents.</p><h2>For many of us, living on a set makes daily life way more difficult</h2><p>Unfortunately, the novelty of seeing my city on the big screen has worn off — and it's hard to be a resident when filming is underway.</p><p>For example, in September 2019, there was a <a target="_blank" href="https://theferret.scot/filming-disruption-edinburgh-council/">three-week, 52-road closure</a> in the middle of town so the "Fast and Furious" sequel could be filmed.</p><p>Even worse, the action movie was filmed just a week after the annual Edinburgh Fringe Festival brought <a target="_blank" href="https://playbill.com/article/attendance-is-up-at-2023-edinburgh-festival-fringe-1-000-000-tickets-sold-so-far">millions of visitors</a> to our 560,000-person town.</p><div type="image" title="shot of a street in Edinburgh at sunset" height="1334" width="1779" msid="107534803" hostid="261"></div><p>Since I've lived here, housing prices and the cost of living in Edinburgh have skyrocketed — partly because of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2020/jul/12/edinburgh-empty-novelist-ian-rankin-locals-see-city-through-tourists-eyes">overtourism </a>that can result from these movies.</p><p>I still want to see my city in film, but I worry that the visibility comes at too steep of a price. If anything, it's turning Edinburgh into something like a theme park for tourists, a fantasy built for temporary amusement.</p><p>When a Marvel-loving friend came here for the first time, she asked me to show her the famous kebab shop Wanda and Vision visited in the film.</p><p>But the shop doesn't exist here. It was just a set made for the production.</p><p>The problem felt fitting after witnessing the past six years of frequent filming. The Edinburgh that international audiences knew was an Edinburgh that didn't exist.</p>

After Peters went over the itinerary, the couple told me more about their love story, which began when they were schoolmates at 10 years old.</p><p>"I was so in love with him it's not even funny," Schofield said. As Schofield told it, she went home with him and never left his side.</p><p>Fifteen years later, their ice-cave wedding marked the next step in their adventure together.</p><p>"When we look back on our wedding day, we want to be able to remember it as the best experience we've ever had and to be able to share the adventure with our stories," the couple told Peters in a questionnaire during the wedding planning process.</p><div type="image" title="A bride and groom walking on a glacier in Iceland wearing crampons" height="2000" width="3000" msid="107582939" hostid="261" sizebytes="1112524"></div><p>When I walked outside at 7 a.m. the next day and saw an enormous Super Jeep with tires that reached my neck, waiting to whisk the bride and groom off to the secret ice cave, I knew this would be one of the most memorable weddings I'd ever attended.</p><p>I found Peters outside the hotel sipping a Red Bull and taking photographs of the wedding dress, rings, and other accouterments as the couple ate breakfast. The strong Icelandic winds whipped her pink-streaked hair as she grabbed a few rocks to keep the hem of Schofield's dress in place.</p><p>We boarded the Super Jeep, which is more accurately described as a monster truck. A pickup truck towed a trailer with a portable bathroom since the secluded, scenic locations we were headed to didn't have facilities.</p><p>We picked up the wedding officiant, a local pastor dressed in hiking boots and an Icelandic wool sweater, just outside town. Then, we began driving off-road out into the wilderness.</p><div type="image" title="Moss-covered mountains in Iceland" height="2000" width="3000" msid="107582944" hostid="261" sizebytes="653320"></div><p>At the wheel, the driver Davíð Geir Jónasson, told us about the local geology and Icelandic folklore as he nonchalantly maneuvered over boulders and sinkholes. It immediately became clear why the average tourist in an SUV wouldn't stand a chance on these rugged routes. There was no cellphone reception, and the ride was so bumpy that it felt like an astronaut training exercise.</p><p>To protect her trade secrets, Peters was adamant that I not reveal any identifying details about the locations we visited. Before she allowed me to crash Schofield and Watson's wedding for this story, I signed a nondisclosure agreement, switched off my phone's GPS capabilities, and agreed not to photograph any landmarks that could give away our whereabouts.</p><p>"We want those beautiful locations to look as amazing as they do on their wedding day as when they come back 25 years from now to renew those vows," Peters told me about operating with such secrecy. "We also don't want people to get into hairy situations. Because 95% of our locations are only accessible via Super Jeep, we don't want anyone with just a regular SUV trying to venture in and get stuck in a glacier, river, and quicksand."</p><p>The locations were so remote that I couldn't reveal them even if I wanted to. How would I begin to give directions? <em>"Keep driving on unmarked, rocky terrain and take a right at the third sinkhole. If you reach a bottomless cliff, you've gone too far."</em></p><p>After driving for an undisclosed amount of time, we arrived in a valley surrounded by moss-covered mountains. Ours were the only tire tracks for miles. Peters and her crew of mountaineers unloaded the supplies: ropes, waders, crampons, and lighting for photos. Then, the bride, groom, and Iceland Wedding Planner team began the 20-minute hike up to the glacier.</p><p>Outside the entrance to the ice cave, Schofield and Watson accessorized their wedding outfits with rubber boots and crampons and giggled as they clipped each other's helmets under their chins. Meanwhile, Peters scampered up and over the cave to ensure everything was in order on the other side. Crew members set up lights and ropes along the glacier's icy walls to facilitate the climb inside.</p><div type="image" title="An ice cave in Iceland." height="2000" width="3000" msid="107582949" hostid="261" sizebytes="875886"></div><p>Schofield entered first, followed by Watson. The rippled ice, smooth from the flowing water, glittered in the darkness. The walls reflected sapphire-blue light where the sun hit them, creating a magnificent cathedral.</p><p>The bride and groom stood on a mound of black volcanic sand with the hollow swirl of the cavern behind them. As Peters positioned her camera, the pastor began to read.</p><p>The ceremony was entirely inaudible over the cave's gushing river, but it didn't matter. Schofield and Watson were the only two people in the world, it seemed.</p><p>After their first kiss as husband and wife, Peters handed them a small bottle of Icelandic moonshine for a celebratory swig. Wearing waterproof waders with her camera in hand, she crouched down in the icy water to capture the perfect shots.</p><p>June 2 was a rare sunny day in Iceland. At our next stop, a giant waterfall in another undisclosed location, powerful streams of water glistened as they tumbled down the cliff. The glacial runoff was so pure that we could drink directly from the stream.</p><p>At the foot of the waterfall, Peters and another crew member laid out a colorful spread of macarons, fruit, and sparkling wine on a bed of decorative blankets and pillows. The others hung back as the bride and groom arrived at their feast.</p><p>"She's taken me places I've never seen, and I'm an Icelander," one crew member told me.</p><div type="image" title="Chris Watson and Jemma Schofield on their wedding day." height="2000" width="3000" msid="107582954" hostid="261" sizebytes="349276"></div><p>After several more scenic stops, we returned to the hotel in Vík at dusk, where dinner awaited the newlyweds.</p><p>I asked them whether their wedding day was everything they had hoped it would be.</p><p>"It was wetter," Watson joked.</p><p>"I loved every minute of it," Schofield added.</p><p>Covered in dirt and utterly spent after the 12-hour whirlwind wedding, I was ready to collapse into bed. Peters, however, looked ready to climb another glacier, not one pink-streaked hair out of place.</p>

A wedding on ice
