From a launch perspective too, MMR had the largest share with 14,820 launches in FY1 2021. This amounts to 24% of all 62,130 launches in the country during this period. While the growth in the country in terms of launches was 18% on a Q-to-Q basis and 51% on a yearly basis. The change in Mumbai was higher than the national averages. The launches in Mumbai grew by 24% on a Q-to-Q basis and 41% on a year-to-year basis. MMR had 11,910 new launches in the previous quarter and 10,490 in the quarter last year of new residential units. From an inventory perspective, i.e.available units for sale, the MMR region has the highest number at 1,97,040 of residential units in Indian cities. Housing market in 2021: Mumbai tops all-India residential sales in the first quarter

The resilient Mumbaikar is being tested again. The Mumbai-kar who has survived floods, bombs, landslides and bad administration will certainly put up with another round of bad deluge. After all, the administration bodies really know the Mumbaikar takes pride in himself, every time he resurfaces after a raw deal. He is flustered only when the locals run behind by a few minutes, or are being cancelled for the day. Else, all is fine with his world. The bombs can explode and the water can gush. 
 
 Really, the state of infrastructure in India’s financial capital is something that invites a feeling of abhor, for want of a better expression. It was exactly ten years ago when the city turned into a live sea just as the day progressed from morning to noon, and into the evening. By then, city had no place to send its people or water that was pouring from the grey clouds. Ever consistently, and continuously. All communication had broken down, and the city had literally turned into a giant water body. Locals rose to the occasion, welcomed strangers into their homes; kept them warm and fed them hot food. That was in 2005. Just about a decade ago. But the memory is so green in people’s minds that it is tough to forget the neck high dirty water and the taste of tablets one had to consume so as to protect oneself from infections caused by rat bites. This was announced on the radio. Yes, <keyword id="6358070" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mumbai">Mumbai</keyword> had literally returned to stone-age (well, almost) those days with radio being the only mode of mass communication. Because newspapers didn’t reach many areas and television sets wouldn’t work after power breakdown of hours. Landslides followed. Local trains returned on tracks and ran precisely on the minute schedule. 
	 The city sprang back on its feet. It was business as usual and everybody, including the <keyword id="53938" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword> (BMC) went right back into sleep. Studies were conducted to understand the water drainage system in the city which failed miserably when faced with 944 mm of rain in just a matter of 24 hours on July 26, 2005. God-fearing locals understood their mother, water-fairy and carer – River Mithi which flows around Mumbai had gotten angry. She had to be calmed down. 
	 
	 

	A decade later, Mithi has roared again to expose the bad planning of authorities who have slept through a decade of infrastructure planning and making the city safe for its people. In the last 24 hours, Mumbai has received more than 283 mm of rain. And this has exposed the delicate situation the city has been in. 
	 What happened to all those surveys, studies and urban planning expertise serve the city which controls most part of the <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> of the country? 
	 
	 

	Heavy rains that pummelled Mumbai have cost the lives of two people who have died of electrocution in the last few hours. But, the real number of those suffering from water-borne epidemics and endemics will never come to fore. They will never make it to the government’s statistics, because the new government would like to believe it needed time to prepare for the challenge. Now, who can challenge them with their own claim? Was it the same people who said city was ‘monsoon-ready’? 
	 
	 

	Though the authorities claim the city received unprecedented rainfall, the drainage system that has existed since ages lays exposed. Bad and worse days ahead. 
	 
	 

	As a response to the 2005 flooding, city authorities had formulated The Greater Mumbai Disaster Management Action Plan which was identify the risks the city would face including floods, earthquakes and cyclones, and suggest ways of tackling the water related challenges. Though one of the suggestions was to deepen and broaden Mithi river which drains into Arabian sea, the suggestion wasn’t considered well owing to environmental factors. 
	 
	 

	Mumbai remains vulnerable to flooding owing to dense population, bad drainage and inefficient garbage management system which leaves the waterways clogged with plastics. 
	 
	 

	Just recently, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicted rise in sea level and Mumbai being the second city in the world at a risk of receiving high rainfall and being subject to floods too. Though development of improved drainage for the city is underway, the works are not moving at a desired pace. Pity that the governments chose to risk people’s lives and property over speed of expediting the works since 2005 floods. 
	 
	 

	A decade later, Mumbai stands exposed and how! In the last decade or so, Mumbai has spent more than Rs 1000 crore on flood preparedness and meeting the challenges that rise alongside. But, looks like the picture was worth less than the money paid. Because, the city has now returned to the starting point. Now, it’s an uphill task all over again.

Mumbai rains lay bare bad planning; crores have disappeared into thin air

Mumbaikars can now easily know about pollution level and weather forecast of the city, using <keyword id="289484" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="SAFAR">SAFAR</keyword> (System of Air Quality &amp; weather Forecasting and Research). This new air quality and weather forecasting system was recently launched in Mumbai by Minister for Science &amp; Technology and <keyword id="2916127" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Earth-Science-Minister">Earth Science Minister</keyword> <keyword id="196226" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Harsh-Vardhan">Harsh Vardhan</keyword>. 

	SAFAR is a monitoring and forecast system conceived to provide three days weather information with health advisories, levels of Ultra-Violet radiation and pollution among others, reported PTI. 
 The system was developed by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, in association with Regional Meteorological Center Mumbai-India Metrological Department, and the <keyword id="48285" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Municipal-Corporation">Municipal Corporation</keyword> of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). 

	Speaking on the occasion, Vardhan praised the Met department whose weather forecasts for farmers and fishermen, he said, have contributed towards the economic development of the country to the tune of Rs 32,000 crore. 
 

	He said the Met department is technically qualified and equipped to make weather forecasts. “There is a lot of misunderstanding in the public about this. The department is doing a very good job," Vardhan told PTI. 
 <keyword id="26806" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Maharashtra-Chief-Minister">Maharashtra Chief Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6355042" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Devendra-Fadnavis">Devendra Fadnavis</keyword>, who was also present on the occasion, said SAFAR was a responsibility given to the state and the state will take care of it. It is a part of an on-going initiative of the Trusts -- Mission Garima -- to promote safe, healthy and humane working conditions for conservancy workers in Mumbai. Under Mission Garima, the Trusts have identified and procured technologies to make the process for waste management more mechanical, and reduce human intervention. Tata Trusts has provided improved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to more than 150 conservancy workers in Mumbai, in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). The launch of the campaign will further see the distribution of more sets of PPE at a first- of-its-kind model chowki at L-ward, Kurla, jointly inaugurated by Tata Trusts and MCGM. Chowkis are facilities in every ward where cleanliness workers assemble to begin their day, and come back to change and rest. The first-of-its kind model chowki in Kurla comprises office space, separate rooms for men and women staff with improved water and sanitation services, storage, and a functional open space. It will be equipped with amenities like a water purification system, microwave oven, a gym, among other recreational activities. Mr. Divyang Waghela, Head – Tata Water Mission, Tata Trusts, said, “Conservancy workers are the backbone of large metropolitan cities like Mumbai. They help in keeping our city clean, and in order. It is imperative that efforts are made to ensure their safety, and to protect their dignity. New Delhi, Mar 23 () CREDAI-MCHI, an apex body for realty firms of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), on Monday said it has converted a municipal training centre into a quarantine facility for over 250 patients because of spread of the coronavirus disease. Separately, Supertech Chairman R K Arora said the company has created a eight-member technical expert team, which can be deployed by the district administration for carrying out sanitisation activities in housing societies at Noida and Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh. The expenses will be borne by the company, he added. CREDAI-MCHI said in a statement that it has converted the Municipal Capacity Building and Research Centre (MCMCR) into a quarantine centre which could be used for testing and self-isolation. The 5-storey building has been fitted with latest facilities including 250 beds, spacious rooms, conference rooms for doctors etc, it added. CREDAI MCHI President Nayan Shah said: "The MCMCR facility, which is a municipal training facility, has been transformed into a quarantine centre which will be able to house over 250+ patients." New Delhi, Apr 20 () A non-profit body Annamrita Foundation, formerly known as ISKCON Food Relief Foundation, on Monday said it has distributed 69 lakh meals to migrant workers, daily wage earners, slum dwellers and the poor across the country during the COVID-19 lockdown period.The Foundation, in a statement, said it is distributing large quantities of meals to identified partner organisations that have taken on the responsibility to ensure door-to-door delivery to the needy especially in slums."In the lockdown period since March 25, Rs 69 lakh meals have been distributed across the country at 3.2 lakh meals per day," according to the Foundation.In Maharashtra, 81 tonnes of rice, 46 tonnes of pulses, 14 tonnes of cooking oil, 63.5 tonnes of vegetables, 4 tonnes of spices and 6 tonnes of salt have been utilised so far, to prepare these meals.At the request of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, the Foundation is delivering meals to all the dedicated and hardworking staff of the municipality on emergency duty.Over 10,000 members of the staff from departments such as solid waste management, maintenance, public health, education, social justice, fire, water and disaster management from 24 Wards around the city are catered to.The Foundation is working round-the-clock to deliver meals to hospitals and quarantine centres in Mumbai."This is a difficult time for our country. ...The workers and volunteers of Annamrita are risking lives to do what is needed.  With every visit, Vislawath would drop in a letter to the local municipal authorities. Seventeen letters went unresponded and he finally decided to visit them, one of whom said, “Educated people like you need to be helping out authorities in these situations.” That’s when the IIT Guwahati graduate took a step back from his active role as the co-founder of Raasta Films, a filmmaking company and decided to build his second startup along with his batchmates Sai Kumar Chinthala and Suraj Peddi. They built Marut Drones – a startup that uses drones to spray <keyword id="65563" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mosquito">mosquito</keyword> killing repellent in Hyderabad’s massive lakes. “These lakes have water hyacinths growing in them, which often makes it difficult for authorities to enter and spray repellents. Workers too are prone to diseases when they enter water, as it also takes a long time to clean. With the drone we can easily target specific areas where larvae are breeding,” Vislawath told Business Insider. What disturbed Vislawath was that as many as 9.7 million cases of mosquito borne diseases are reported in a year. They lead to 40,297 deaths. The startup claims to have built India’s first drone to eradicate mosquitoes larvae and water hyacinth on lakes as well as autonomous drones that spray on agricultural fields. They also use an AI platform to identify mosquito borne diseases and the areas where they breed. “All of Hyderabad has only 17 entomologists. Only when a complaint comes in, a manual survey is done to check for mosquito breeding. They don’t have real time data. With our technology, a dashboard will show them the data of different breeds of mosquitoes,” he said. Marut Drones has built an IOT device, which captures mosquitoes within a 500 metre range and identifies whether its male or female and what kind of disease it could be carrying. Based on that, they give recommendations on whether the specific area has larvae or adult mosquitoes and how to deal with it. Interestingly for Vislawath and Sai, it was an obvious choice to use drones as they used them for filmmaking. They partnered with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. After a pilot in March in Miyapur lake , the mosquito larval density has come down from 41 per ladle of water to 28. With great results and a boost from the Hyderabad Municipal corporation, Marut Drones is now expanding to Mumbai and Raipur. “We aim to reach out to all smart cities in the country with our effective solutions,” said Vislawath. The startup was also one of the top startups in Facebook India’s Artificial Intelligence accelerator, through which they will get a month of mentorship from the social media giant.
