Great Indian Festival "The first wave of the Great Indian Festival was our biggest celebration ever with Amazon.in — witnessing highest share of transacting customers and purchases across all marketplaces in India," said Amit Agarwal, senior vice president and country head of Amazon India. The company states that customers from 99.4% of India’s postal codes placed an order during the sale. On the busiest day of the sale more than 600 flights were in transit delivering Amazon products. Despite the economic slowdown, Amazon claims that there was growth in customers availing credit options on the site. There were 1.5 times as many customers opting for EMIs during this year’s sale as compared to last year. Every one in two customers was availing a credit option was doing so for the first time, doubling the amount of new-to-credit customers. The fashion category brought in the most amount of new customers for Amazon. More than 1 million fashion items were sold within the first 24 hours of the sale going live. Overall, nearly 15,000 sellers on Amazon India saw their sales double and thousands of them recorded their highest sales ever during the first day of the Great Indian Festival. Big Billion Days Smartphone sales were the secret to Flipkart dominating the market share, according to the Redseer report. The company claims that this has been the biggest festive season for the mobiles category on their platform. More 20 different smartphone sold more than 100,000 units each during the Big Billion Days sale. Where mobile phone sales contributed to volume, the fashion category brought in new customers. It saw a 70% growth in sales over last year and brought in 40% of the new users that logged onto Flipkart. Overall, Flipkart clocked in 70 billion views across all categories. So yes, while offline retailers are conservative in spending money on advertising they do get the benefit of e-commerce spending,” Sahni told Business Insider. More importantly, both Flipkart and Amazon also managed to open up new markets. Amazon saw 91% of new customers coming from Tier 2 and 3 towns, whereas Flipkart stated that its number of transacting customers from Tier 2 and beyond have doubled over last year’s sale on the first day. And it is not just discounts that is bringing in customers. “Affordability programmes such as no-cost EMI, exchange, instant bank discounts and more continue to enable record number of customers to upgrade to premium products. With more first-time shoppers from small towns than ever before and tens of thousands of small sellers across India already seeing success, we are excited,” said Manish Tiwary, Vice President - Category Management, Amazon India.

‘Sorry, the page is not responding’ 
 
Dread. Fear. Horror- these wash over you as you realize your worst nightmare has come true. You keep on refreshing the page, but the words still say the same. 
 
But, now you have some new information to digest... 
 
‘The product is out of stock.’ 
 
You’re gutted beyond words. But, you tell yourself that the disappointment called dating men has readied you for this very day. 
 
And, as you dry off your tears that start resembling River Nile, you start browsing once again with your head held high. 
 
Several thoughts run through your head- 
 
“Oh look! This product that I’ll never use is at 70% off. My god, that’s so cheap. We never know. I might someday be in need of it. 
 
*Add to cart*”

This goes on until you manage to put an enormous number of products that could sustain an entire army in your cart and just as you’re about to checkout to a world of happiness, a very crucial moment (which comes free with two messages) arrives-

Message 2: We regret to inform you that your size is not in stock. 
 
You stare at the screen and decide that it’s enough. 
 
“These sales suck”, you tell yourself and log in to Twitter to diss them and rant to the world about how wronged you feel. 
 
And, in that moment, you realise you're not alone. 
 
Your timeline houses umpteen tweets about these websites cheating customers by marking up proices represented through angry words, videos and imagery. 
 
Then you chuckle to yourself – Sale or no sale, your bank balance still wouldn’t have been enough to afford even one-fourth of the items on your wishlist. 
 
“Joke’s on you Flipkart/Amazon/Snapdeal”
