<ul><li>WhatsApp and the Indian government’s Invest India program announced the winners of the ‘Startup India - WhatsApp Grand Challenge’.</li><li>The contest received over 1,700 entries from across the country but only five startups ultimately won. </li><li>Each of the five startups have been awarded a grant of $50,000 each to continue developing their ideas.</li></ul>WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned messaging service, collaborated with Indian government’s investment promotion agency, Invest India, to invite startups from all over the country for a contest involving prize money of $250,000. Five startups — Medcords, Melzo, Javis, Gramophone and MinionLabs — outshined the rest winning a grant of $50,000 each. The ‘Startup India – WhatsApp Grand Challenge’ was launched earlier this year to inspire entrepreneurs to develop solutions that have socio-economic impact on the Indian economy. The contest received more than 1,700 entries from all over the country, which were then judged on the basis of innovative thinking, scale of impact and the ability to solve real problems faced by Indians. Around 70% of the applications received were from startups that were less than 3 months old and in prototype stage. According to WhatsApp, this is an encouraging indicator of the vibrancy of startups in India. Meet the final five that made it to the finish line in the ‘Startup India – WhatsApp Grand Challenge’:

Mumbai, Music composer and singer <keyword id="19908058" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shankar-mahadevan" source="keywords">Shankar Mahadevan</keyword> has expressed his gratitude with a heart-felt note after his and Zakir Hussain's <keyword id="19955942" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shakti" source="keywords">Shakti</keyword> band Shakti won the Best Global Music Album award at the Grammys 2024. He said that this is the moment from which he can say that dreams do come true. <keyword id="20293270" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mahadevan" source="keywords">Mahadevan</keyword> took to Instagram, where he shared a string of pictures from Grammy 2024 and said that he never imagined that a band from where he learnt his music would eventually win a Grammy. He wrote alongside a picture where he is seen posing with a golden gramophone: "WE DID IT. I never imagined that a band from where I have learnt my music and my musical aesthetics would be the band with whom I would eventually perform and win a Grammy. This is the moment from which I can easily say that dreams do come true. "Shakti was a dream which came true! Thank you Almighty for making this happen! It's truly 'THIS MOMENT.'" Mahadevan and Zakir's band, which features guitarist John McLaughlin, percussionist <keyword id="20458654" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="v-selvaganesh" source="keywords">V Selvaganesh</keyword>, and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan, gave a heartening speech. He said: "Thank you boys. Thank you God, family, friends and India. India, we are proud of you." He added: "Last but not the least, I would like to dedicate this award to my wife, whom every note of my music is dedicated to."

<ul><li><keyword id="106741" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saregama">Saregama</keyword>, India’s oldest music label, signed a deal with Facebook on June 3.</li><li>For the fourth quarter of FY20, profits for the company fell from ₹165 million in Q4FY19 to ₹148 million this year. </li><li>However, even after the profit fell, the shares of the company were up by 10%. </li></ul>Saregama, India’s oldest music label, has signed a global licensing deal with Facebook and Instagram and now, the market is dancing to its tune. Ever since the deal has been signed on June 3 morning, the share price is up by 56%. The share price surged 10% on Friday despite a 10% fall in quarterly profit to ₹16.5 crore. The company, which takes the credit for India’s first recorded song in 1902 ⁠— it was called Gramophone company of India then and was later known as HMV ⁠— saw its music revenue drop by 19% in Jan-March 2020 compared to the same time last year. <div type="image" title="saregama." msid="76215894" hostid="261"></div> Saregama has over 100,000 songs across genres including film songs, devotional music, ghazals &amp; indipop in more than 25 languages. And now, these songs can be accessed by Facebook and Instagram users. “Millions of Facebook users will be able to add music from our vast catalogue to stories and videos they create and share,” said Vikram Mehra, Managing Director of Saregama India in a statement. Social media is the future, TV is the current driver The revenue from its television and films division jumped 39% year-on-year. “This was a good year for the film division, Yoodlee, which licensed 6 movies during this year. Three of these were delivered to Hotstar as Hotstar Originals and the other three to Netflix. One of the Yoodlee films, Hamid, won two National Film Awards while another film, Kanpuriye, won the Talentrack award,” said the company. The company has said that the next quarter revenue could be hit because of no new production since March due to stop in shooting during lockdown. And that could be the reason why the Kolkata-based music label is betting on its digital push. Since the beginning of FY21, it has signed deals with <keyword id="685487" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Spotify">Spotify</keyword>, Facebook and Instagram. One of its flagship products – Carvaan radio saw its sales fall to an all time low in the past six quarters with just 74,000 units sold in Q4FY20. The company said that the reason for this was corporate buying went to zero, electronic chains and big distributors reduced buying from Feb onwards, retail network was in lockdown since March and the month of March typically contributes 50% of Q4 sales. New Delhi, Apr 30 () Agri-startups, which are growing at 25 per cent year-on-year basis, can offer tech solutions to help Indian farm sector to keep food and farm supply chain rolling during and post lockdown phase, according to a study by industry body Ficci.This becomes more critical amid the ongoing procurement of rabi (winter) crops and consequent sowing of kharif (summer) crops across the country in the backdrop of COVID-19 scare, it said.There are about 450 active agri-startups in India. Many of them are already working to solve the problems at hand, it added.According to the study, agri-tech startup companies have grown 25 per cent year-on-year. They have received venture capital funding of USD 545 million since 2014. out of this, USD 330 million came in 2019.Highlighting agri-tech solutions, the study said agri-startups can provide aggregation and distribution of farm produce from point of collection to consumption centres.Many startups are trying to connect farmers with buyers, including retailers, e-commerce, processors, cloud kitchens and even direct to consumers.Startups working in this area include Ninjacart, Jumbotail, Bigbasket, ShopKirana, SuperZop, WayCool, MeraKisan, Kamatan, DeHaat, KrishiHub, Agrowave, Loop, Crofarm, FreshoKartz, Agribolo, Himkara, Kisan Network.To provide quality assaying of agricultural commodities, startups like Intellolabs, Agricxlab, Zense, Raav Tech, Occipital, Amvicube and Nanopix are attempting to solve the problem of standardisation through mobile imagery and digitisation.To address post harvest challenges, the study said some startups have begun work on near farm, modular and affordable storage and processing solutions.These storage facilities are intended to give farmers an option to sell the produce at the right price and at the right time, instead of immediate or distressed liquidation of their produce after harvest.The startups in this category include Our Foods, Agri Bazaar, Star Agri, Arya Collateral, Ecozen, Origo, it added.For smooth operation of kharif sowing, the study said startups such as Agrostar, BigHaat, Behtar Zindagi, Unnati, Gramophone, Freshokartz, AgriBolo, DeHaat, Bharat Rohan, and Bharat Agr are offering solutions to optimise the use of agricultural inputs and enable delivery to farmers.Agri-startups are trying to build business models to reach out to farmers directly both online as well as through offline presence in the villages. Such startups can play a pivotal role in making sure that farmers get desired inputs in a timely manner, it said.To reduce labour cost through mechanisation, some start-up companies like Sickle innovations, Distinct Horizon, Tractor Junction, Khetibadi and J Farm service are offering mechanisation solutions for harvesting and sowing.In addition, some of the startups have focused on accurate and timely assessment of soil moisture and developing data-driven controlled irrigation models. The startups in this category include Satyukt Analytics, Flybird, Kritsnam, Agrirain, Manna Irrigation, the study added.That apart, some agritech startups can provide farmers advisory for crop monitoring, including institutional credit and crop insurance.CropIn, SatSure, Farmguide, Niruthi, AgRisk, Skymet. Startups like Samunnati, FarMart, Jai-Kisan, PayAgri, Bijak are specifically working in value chain financing.Many of these startups are using satellite images to geotag farms, assess crop health and estimate output. They are also building algorithms for farm monitoring and models for artificial intelligence to automate and improve predictably of yield and farmers' incomes, the study added. LUX BALBAL
