To help fund these investments — and clear the way for the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/ai-stocks-to-invest-artificial-intelligence-data-center-energy-companies-2024-6">AI boom</a> — more companies could cut jobs. While there's been a mountain of speculation about if and when <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/generative-ai-replace-your-job-increase-productivitiy-angus-deaton-2024-4">AI technologies like ChatGPT</a> could displace workers, their near-term impact on job losses could be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-companies-excuse-job-cuts-tech-layoffs-2024-1">less about job replacement</a> and more about the cost of AI investments. Of course, for workers who lose their jobs, the end result is the same.This is already playing out.In a February earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/05/technology/why-is-big-tech-still-cutting-jobs.html">told</a> analysts that Meta had to lay off workers and manage costs "so we can invest in these long-term, ambitious visions around AI."In a memo published in January, Google CEO Sundar Pichai told employees that the company would be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-ceo-says-more-layoffs-to-come-2024-1">laying off more workers</a> to make room for other investments, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/01/26/ai-hiring-frenzy-to-fuel-layoffs-in-other-tech-segments-this-year.html">including AI</a>."The reality is that to create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices," he wrote.Last November, Amazon <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-layoffs-memo-hundreds-job-cuts-alexa-agi-team-2023-11">laid off hundreds of workers</a> in its Alexa division. Daniel Rausch, vice president of Alexa and Fire TV, told his team via email that the company would be "maximizing our resources and efforts focused on generative AI," leading it to "discontinue some initiatives.""A lot of this is really the shift and spend toward the AI revolution," Dan Ives, a Wedbush Securities analyst, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://thehill.com/policy/technology/4478773-why-tech-companies-are-laying-off-thousands-of-workers/">told</a> The Hill in February after a series of tech layoffs.It's not just Big Tech. A <a target="_blank" href="https://assets.ey.com/content/dam/ey-sites/ey-com/en_us/topics/ceo/ey-ceo-outlook-survey-us-edition-october-2023.pdf">survey</a> of 1,200 CEOs from large companies across the globe, conducted last fall by FT Longitude on behalf of EY, found that 100% of their businesses were making or planning to make "significant investments in generative AI." When asked how they planned to fund these investments, 71% of CEOs said they planned to "reallocate capital" from their technology budgets or other investment budgets — 34% said they planned to raise new capital."Whenever a new technology emerges and is found to be useful, companies decide to invest in that technology and sometimes invest less in other areas," Oded Netzer, a Columbia Business School professor and AI expert, told Business Insider via email.To be sure, these investments in AI are also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-the-ai-hiring-frenzy-big-tech-talent-war-2024-3">expected to lead</a> to significant hiring for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-specialists-hiring-big-tech-wall-street-high-paying-jobs-2024-4">AI-related jobs</a> — even if AI technologies begin to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/will-ai-replace-jobs-generative-artificial-intelligence-tools-training-ceos-2024-1">replace some workers</a>. Additionally, it remains to be seen how much AI spending will necessitate job cuts in other business areas, Carl Benedikt Frey, an economist at the University of Oxford, told Business Insider via email."I think it is true that companies are revising their business models in the light of recent developments in AI, cutting back on investment and jobs in other domains in the process," he said. "But the magnitude of this shift is still hard to tell."<h2 id="3b5eabf8-ea8b-4a3a-8785-726ff7a46fe2">The risks of AI job replacement remains to be seen</h2>In the big picture, Netzer said he expects AI technologies to be an "enhancer rather than a replacer of jobs" in the years ahead."For many jobs, AI is likely to enhance our job, allowing us to spend more time on the things we enjoy doing and less time on the mundane," he said.He gave the example of a physician who has to devote precious time with patients typing notes on the computer."We are not far from AI making a transcription of the patient meeting," he said. "But this in unlikely to lead to fewer doctors but rather the doctors being able to spend more quality time with the patient."However, some companies have begun citing AI as a reason for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/duolingo-lays-off-workers-ai-tools-2024-1">job cuts</a> or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ibm-halts-hiring-for-7800-jobs-that-could-be-replaced-by-ai-report-2023-5">hiring cutbacks</a>. A Fiverr <a target="_blank" href="https://investors.fiverr.com/news-releases/news-release-details/majority-companies-72-admit-not-having-comprehensive-plans-place">survey</a> conducted in May of 1,001 US managers, business leaders, and decision-makers who had done layoffs in the prior six months found that the top reason cited for the layoffs was "new technology, where AI could increase efficiencies and reduce head count."Benedikt Frey pointed to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-wont-take-your-job-someone-using-it-will-quote-2024-6">translators</a> as one profession that has seen fewer employment opportunities due to generative AI, per his research."We are indeed already seeing AI having an impact on jobs," he said.Have you lost your job due to AI? "We're seeing CEOs flying to candidates to close offers, significantly above-average sign-on and performance bonuses, new equity structures, customized benefits for individuals, and more," Xu said.Iffi Wahla, CEO of global talent network Edge, said data scientists have been among the best-paid tech workers in recent years, partly because every business needs people who can understand and extract value from data. Companies want to spread AI skills across their operations, so those with a background or training in techniques such as prompt engineering on generative AI will benefit from increased job opportunities and pay, Wahla added.Here are some of the most sought-after skills that may help you land a well-paying job in AI.Aswini Thota, director of data science at financial service firm USAA, told BI that when hiring data scientists and AI engineers, he assesses candidates based on three key areas: technical prowess, business acumen and communication, and innovation.<h2 id="770d000b-61e3-47fa-a646-e4f931dcf6d9">Technical knowledge</h2>Thota says data scientists are expected to be well-versed in Python and R, the most popular programming languages for building AI models, while some companies use C++ and Java.They're also expected to have a foundational knowledge of statistics, as well as machine learning algorithms and frameworks in Python or R."A vast majority of organizations rely on cloud technology to store, analyze, and build models, so a working knowledge of Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Snowflake, Microsoft Azure, Databricks, and similar platforms has become increasingly important in recent years," Thota said.<h2 id="0d17a6e8-d8a6-4e00-957f-f7a31c70048b">Business acumen and communication</h2>According to Thota, data scientists looking to land a job in AI should also have strong business acumen to grasp an organization's challenges and develop solutions. "Communication skills come into play when data scientists must explain the results and influence decision-makers to align with the technical approach they recommend."<h2 id="eaab06a2-f711-40dd-9495-5179cf962dca">Innovation</h2>When recruiting for senior or lead roles, Thota says he looks for candidates who have the potential to lead with innovation. "Hiring candidates with an innovative mindset helps us anticipate and address potential challenges before they become issues and also develop groundbreaking solutions."<h2 id="13a2fd6f-271b-4dd7-863c-368cb3f48cfb">Flexibility and ongoing learning</h2>Ram Srinivasan, a future of work leader at consulting firm JLL, says some of the most sought-after AI competencies include a combination of technical and soft skills.They include having a "strong learning mindset and adaptability" because employers look for candidates who can quickly adopt new technologies and methods.<h2 id="68c81e4a-7948-48ea-a7c1-6d5e6dd3d579">Problem-solving and teamwork</h2>Srinivasan adds: "AI projects often involve complex challenges requiring innovative problem-solving skills. Collaborating effectively with diverse teams, including data scientists, project managers, and product developers, is also essential."<h2 id="ba989eb5-ba28-44cc-bd73-6e3d462c48a3">Ethical considerations</h2>AI development poses ethical questions and risks that engineers and developers must navigate responsibly.<h2 id="ba55c147-ee87-4ef4-8b7a-ecad5f79662d">Identifying use cases</h2>Srinivasan said tech workers should be able to spot potential AI applications across industries, assess their feasibility, and implement them effectively."This involves understanding various sectors, developing implementation strategies, managing organizational change, and measuring ROI. Skills in expanding successful AI pilots and facilitating user adoption are crucial."

These are the top skills you need to help land a job in AI

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Data scientist Pranjali Ajay Parse explained what a role in AI looks like in reality.</li><li>She said AI roles require a number of interdisciplinary skills and wide-range collaboration.</li></ul>There's more to an AI job than simply writing code.Just ask 25-year-old <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/pranjali-ajay-parse/">Pranjali Ajay Parse,</a> who works as a data scientist for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/adsk-stock">Autodesk</a>. She's been developing an AI tool that provides employees with insights into their work patterns, such as meeting trends and work routines.After getting her master's degree in computer science and working at Autodesk for over a year, Parse has been able to grasp what it's like to actually work in an AI role — and she said it's not what people may expect.Parse said that working in AI is largely interdisciplinary and dependent on collaboration; and while you may be working in tech, the job also requires a heavy focus on ethics. In a conversation with Business Insider, she debunked some of the myths about AI roles.<h2 id="39fb9434-677c-4540-99f3-786322b94706">It's not just coding</h2>Pranjali said proficiency in Python won't cut it if you're looking for a job in AI.Parse said candidates don't necessarily need a degree in AI to get a job in the field. But she said you need to know how to do case study analysis, SQL querying, and coding. She said candidates can try boot camps or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-data-scientist-personal-ai-project-important-land-job-2024-7">personal projects to skill up in those areas</a>."AI is inherently interdisciplinary," Parse said. "It draws from various domains, including mathematics, computer science, statistics, and domain-specific knowledge."Parse said about 70% of her job is data science, which requires reviewing and analyzing data sets. She said the rest of her time is split between software engineering, building pipelines, data engineering, architectural design, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-studied-ai-on-who-should-rethink-major-2024-5">a lot of math.</a>Parse also added that it's important to stay updated with advancements in related fields because the technology is constantly evolving.<h2 id="5a3e6998-7092-40ea-b5a7-1638999c9188">AI roles are often highly collaborative</h2>Software engineers have been known to be loners, but don't count on solitude if you're working in AI.While <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/incredibly-lonely-high-paying-tech-job-seattle-2023-9">some engineering roles tend to be independent</a>, Parse said, "AI projects are rarely done solo." Part of this is because AI is a new technology that requires collaboration among a variety of teams and stakeholders, she said.For example, Parse said she has to interact with seven or eight teams to build an AI recommendation system project.In her experience, the process begins with data collection and preparation by a data analysis team. Then, data scientists apply statistical methods and modeling. The machine learning team then develops and refines the model. Once the model is ready, UX and UI experts design the user interface, followed by software engineers who build the front end.Finally, the marketing team determined the product's launch strategy."An end-to-end AI project requires a lot of communication and collaboration," Parse said.<h2 id="d7e39cdf-a494-4b68-99bd-ca53f2df01ea">You need to be thinking about ethics</h2>Privacy teams are often deeply embedded in the process when sensitive data is handled during AI development.Parse said the privacy protocols are extensive. When working with a person's data, employees need to receive permission for tasks. Projects also require robust production measures, like pseudonymizing identities and ensuring models don't "inadvertently recreate biases or create inequitable outcomes."This requires complying with legal and regulatory requirements, she said. It also means thinking about the long-term implications of projects, including potential unintended consequences and ethical dilemmas.While privacy may seem like an obvious consideration for those working in AI, Parse said it can be easy to get caught up in how the models perform. Also, since so many teams contribute to the product, it can be easy to focus on your specific task rather than the overarching implications, she added.Parse said <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/educating-workplaces-about-ai-for-better-outcomes-processes-2024-5">it's up to companies to train employees</a> on proper privacy and ethical guidelines. But it's also important for employees to consider a third-person perspective on the work they're doing.

A Gen Z data scientist says AI jobs require more than coding — and don't expect to be a loner at work

The department is mulling a process to evaluate private sector employees to fill the senior talent pool, it added. The government has been facing talent shortage in top roles. E-commerce management platform CommerceIQ will be hiring 250 people next year across various domains

New Delhi, Nov 27 () The government on Wednesday said that providing jobs to former employees of now-defunct Jet Airways is not in its domain.
A portal opened for the former employees is helping them in looking for new jobs, Minister of Civil Aviation Hardeep Singh Puri told the Rajya Sabha.
"So far as the portal is concerned, it is functioning and the portal is providing opportunities both to the employees and different airlines stakeholders to be in touch with each other," he said.
"Many of the employees are utilising that portal. Others have found jobs elsewhere but again I would reiterate to the members that it is not the government's job to be in a position to take decisions which are in the domain of the management," he added.
According to Puri, it is the job of the management of an airlines to keep it afloat.
"The issue is before NCLAT. I cannot pre-judge, what NCLAT would do," he added.
Puri was replying to a supplementary question asked by Sanjay Singh of the AAP.
"The minister had assured us in the house that no employee of Jet Airways would lose job and would be adjusted in other companies," said Singh.
The government had also said at that time that a website was being launched having details of the employees for that purpose.
However, rejecting it, Puri said, "My tenure started in the Civil Aviation ministry in June and Jet Airways had ceased its operations several months before I became minister. There is no way that I could have made a statement on retrenchment. Jet Airways has already ceased operations."
The Naresh Goyal-led Jet Airways, which was the largest private carrier at its time, was grounded on April 17 due to financial troubles.
Jet Airways employed around 18,000 people, when the carrier suspended its international and domestic flights.

The money they earned was funneled to the North Korean weapons program, FBI leaders said at a news conference in St. Louis.Federal authorities announced the seizure of $1.5 million and 17 domain names as part of the investigation, which is ongoing.Jay Greenberg, special agent in charge of the St. Louis FBI office, said any company that hired freelance IT workers "more than likely" hired someone participating in the scheme. The <keyword id="6354977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="Orion">Supreme Court</keyword> is scheduled to pronounce on Thursday its order on a batch of PILs on the recent <keyword id="6367820" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="adani-group" source="Orion">Adani Group</keyword> shares crash triggered by the <keyword id="9916845" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="hindenburg-research" source="Orion">Hindenburg Research</keyword>'s fraud allegations. A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala is likely to deliver its verdict over setting up of a panel of domain experts for strengthening existing regulatory measures for stock markets. While reserving its order, the top court on February 17 had refused to accept in a sealed cover the Centre's suggestion on a proposed panel of experts. Observing that it wanted full transparency for protection of investors, the top court had also ruled out the possibility of any sitting judge overseeing the functioning of the proposed panel. Stressing that statutory bodies like market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (<keyword id="35210" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SEBI" source="Orion">SEBI</keyword>) are fully equipped and are on job, the central government had expressed apprehension that any unintentional message to the investors that regulatory bodies in India needed monitoring by a panel may have some adverse impact on the flow of money into the country. The Centre had told the bench that it wanted to provide details such as names and the scope of the panel's mandate in a sealed cover . Stock market regulator SEBI, in its note filed in the top court, had indicated it is not in favour of banning short-selling or sale of borrowed shares, and said it is investigating allegations made by a tiny short-seller against the <keyword id="76451" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="Adani" source="Orion">Adani</keyword> Group as well as its share price movements. Congress leader Thakur, in his plea, has sought an investigation under the supervision of a sitting apex court judge against the Adani Group of companies in light of the allegations. The fourth PIL seeks a probe by multiple central government agencies under the supervision of a panel or a former apex court judge against the Adani Group following allegations of fraud and share price manipulation. "Direct appropriate audit (transactional and forensic audits), inquiry and investigation by appropriate agencies such as Serious Frauds Investigation Office (SFIO); Registrar of Companies (RoC); Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI); ED (Directorate of Enforcement) on money-laundering aspect; I-T (Income-Tax Department on aspects of offshore transactions and tax-havens involved and DRI( Department of Revenue Intelligence), " the fourth plea said. Besides seeking a direction to the Centre and its agencies to render cooperation in the probe, the PIL has sought a direction to appoint a retired judge of the apex court or a committee to oversee and monitor the inquiry and investigation . Adani Group stocks have taken a beating on the bourses after the Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share-price manipulation, against the business conglomerate.
