New Delhi, Dec 12 () The government's priority is to pay the outstanding salaries of BSNL employees and contract workers once the condition of the debt-laden firm improves, Union minister 
Sanjay Shamrao Dhotre informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. 
The state-owned telecom company is in loss since 2010 and has a debt of around Rs 20,000 crore.
"Our priority is to give salaries to the employees. The entire House knows BSNL's condition. A revival package has been given by the government for BSNL and MTNL and once the situation improves our priority will be to pay salaries," the Minister of State for Communications said during the Question Hour.
Replying to another query, he said the government's priority once the funds are arranged will be to pay the contract workers engaged with BSNL. 
In a written reply, telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said due to poor financial condition of BSNL, it has not been possible for the government to agree to the demand of pay revision of its retired employees. Hence, the issue of pension revision has not been agreed to as on date, he added. 
 Prasad said the pension revision of retired BSNL employees gets linked to the pay-revision of the serving employees in as much as pension is calculated on the basic pay which the retired employee was earning at the time of retirement. 
Pension may be revised if the said basic pay is revised on account of pay revision of serving employees.
 Dhotre informed the Upper House that 78,000 BSNL employees and 13,500 MTNL employees have opted for VRS and the government will finalise it before January 31. 
Nearly 1 lakh BSNL employees are eligible for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) out of its total staff strength of about 1.50 lakh. The effective date of voluntary retirement under the present scheme is January 31, 2020. RSN

As many as two millions government employees across multiple state-owned companies are either anxious, ready to protest and have even taken to roads — to make sure they get their due. This is extra pain on the Indian economy as millions of blue collar jobs have already been lost in the last few months — across auto, textile and diamond polishing sectors. Delayed salaries and job cuts The worst-affected of all government employees are the 176,000 at telecom operator BSNL. In the last few months, the debt-ridden company has been paying salaries two weeks late. While the government is still mulling a bailout package, the employees are left in doldrums. Another 20,000 employees of <keyword id="2573" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-India">Air India</keyword> are just as angry and anxious about their future. And, the government has already decided their fate — which is a sell-off. The pilots union has already told the government that they will go for mass resignations if the national carrier lands in the hands of a private entity — which is sure to downsize. Wage revisions are too little, too late As many wonder about the state of their employment, others are annoyed with delayed wage revisions. As many as 20,000 workers and a few officers of Bangalore-headquartered Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) are protesting against low salary hikes. The company dismissed their demand for higher wage revision saying, "workmen cannot be at par with officers on salaries and perks.” “We hope this realization will percolate to the employees sooner to make them call off their indefinite strike," HAL Chief Financial Officer C B Ananthakrishnan told IANS. Employees of public sector banks — which employs nearly 800,000 people — also seem to be unhappy with the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/careers/news/salary-hikes-at-government-banks-ahead-of-diwali/articleshow/71473853.cms"> wage revision</a> as the bankers association decided to offer one month extra salary without reaching a consensus with the bank unions. They are expected to go on a strike on October 22. Interestingly, the wage revision was due since 2017 in both cases. State government employees lose jobs and hope The employees of state governments have their own set of problems. Over 49,000 <keyword id="2981720" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telangana-State-Road-Transport-Corporation">Telangana State Road Transport Corporation</keyword> (TSRTC) employees have been on a 12-day long protest, demanding salaries for September. But, not just delayed payments, job loss is hurting the most vulnerable of employees. But, it slashed the workforce to 65,000, in order to compensate for the hike. Over 2 million government employees are angry, anxious and dejected over salaries, hikes and job security

<ul><li>The number of salaried <keyword id="32919" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-employees">women employees</keyword> in the urban workforce has increased by 2.1%, compared to 1.5% amongst men, according to the <keyword id="3429286" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Periodic-Labour-Force-Survey">Periodic Labour Force Survey</keyword> (PLFS) released by the National Statistical Organisation (NSO). </li><li>The overall share of salaried employees improved from 48.3% in 2018 to 50% in March 2019. </li><li>The unemployment rate dropped to 11.6% among women against 12.8% in June last year. </li><li>According to the Monster Salary Index, women earn 19% less than men in India. </li></ul>Fewer Indian women are a part of its labour market. But their participation seems to be growing at a faster rate than that of men. That means, of the 59 million people who enter the job market, only one in five will be women. Education Statistics Though fewer women are expected to work, there has been no change in women who are keen on an education. Female participation at the higher secondary level stood at 70.8% over the last decade. But this is changing as the skill levels increase. More women are drawing salaries in India but the gender pay gap persists

Overall, the country has an average take home salary as $60,717( nearly ₹4.2 million), as per the data by Management Development Institute (MDI) <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-in/money/photos/the-30-countries-where-people-get-paid-the-most/ss-AAyNHX0#image=1">World Talent Ranking</a>. Following the trend, China and Canada have also shown a positive growth in salaries, owing to the new technologies fueling the job market. However, Indian working professionals witnessed a significant dip in salaries in the last seven years — from $20,372( ₹1.41 million) in 2012 to $17,641 (₹1.23 million) in 2018. The noted drop in salaries may be due to the reduction in manpower as automation took over majority of tasks.

Here’s how much an IT employee makes in different countries

<ul><li>According to the latest report by AON, 98.9% companies in India intend to give a <keyword id="6355281" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="salary-hike" source="Orion">salary hike</keyword> to its employees in 2022.</li><li>The percentage of salary hike given to employees was 8.8% this year, it is projected to increase to 9.4% in 2022.</li><li>Employees with upgraded technical and digital skills are said to be the most successful in 2021.</li></ul>It is projected that 98.9% companies in India will give or intend to give a salary increment to its employees in 2022, according to the latest report by professional services firm AON. This is a jump compared to this year, which saw 97.5% of Indian firms giving a salary hike to its employees. The average percentage of salary increment given to the employees this year was 8.8%. However, the report has forecast an increase to 9.4% in the year 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic may have disrupted people’s lives, but companies say that it has definitely not hampered productivity throughout these 18 months, as per AON. The survey also reveals that around 45.4% of companies saw an improvement in their overall business outlook. This percentage is also projected to further increase to 61.9% in 2022. Therefore, most of the companies decided to give a pay raise and bonuses to its employees. “Despite another wave of COVID-19 hitting the nation hard, Indian organisations have displayed resilience in riding through the tough times. While pandemic risk in India continues, the business sentiment and salary projections for 2022 tell us that employers are building for growth and are much better prepared than in 2020,” said Roopank Chaudhary, partner at AON’s human capital business in a press release. Other than the hospitality sector, engineering services and energy sector will have low salary increments for 2022. Another notable aspect is that the number of organisations choosing not to give an increment may also decline from 2.5% to 1.1%, which means that there will be very few companies that might not give an increment next year, according to the report. Chaudhary further said that the employees with digital and technological skills are the “most successful” in 2021. The salary increment trend was seen mostly for the employees who had updated skills according to the trend going on in the market. The companies demanding recovery of the unpaid dues include Sterlite Technologies (STL), Vihaan Networks Limited (VNL) and Birla Cable Limited (BCL) amongst others. This includes payment of telecommunication kits and other services extended to the telcos BSNL and MTNL. 100,000 people working with BSNL vendors are likely to go empty handed
