The Cabinet on Thursday approved Rs 12,000 crore for the second phase of the <keyword id="1869019" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-energy-corridor" source="Orion">Green Energy Corridor</keyword> to facilitate grid integration and power evacuation of about 20 GW of renewable energy projects in seven states. The scheme targets to add approximately 10,750 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and about 27,500 mega volt-amperes transformation capacity of sub-stations. Announcing the decision, Union Minister Anurag Thakur said the second phase will be implemented during 2021-22 to 2025-26 fiscal years. He said central assistance is 33 per cent of the total investment. The minister added that 80 per cent of the phase one work has been completed. The outlay of the first phase was Rs 10,142 crore. Cabinet approves ₹12,000 crore for second phase of green energy corridor

"I think it is a deliberate move to put the brakes on as renewable energy is now affecting competition and not in the way that favours fossil fuels.""The government is rigging the energy markets in favour of fossil fuels and nuclear energy. British green tech millionaire: The Tory government is rigging the energy markets

Going green is never as easy as it sounds, and this is a fact that India is slowly digesting. Citing delays by state governments and a shortage of charging points, Energy Efficiency Services Ltd, a joint venture between four public-sector power companies, has decided to postpone a plan to procure and operate <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/business/2018/05/29/india-delays-plan-to-roll-out-10-000-electric-cars-to-2019">10,000 EVs</a> to March 2019. The battery-powered cars are meant to replace the petrol and diesel cars in the <keyword id="26362" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Government">government</keyword>’s fleet, which comprises of 500,000 vehicles. As most of these cars are for use within cities, the relatively short distances required to be traveled make electric cars a suitable alternative. The replacement period is expected to take three to four years. A modest original target The government had originally planned to have 500 EVs on the road <a href="http://pib.nic.in/newsite/PrintRelease.aspx?relid=171263">by November 2017</a>, sourced from Tata Motors and Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, with the remaining 9,500 ready by June 2018. The move dovetailed with the central government’s somewhat unrealistic plan to have battery-powered vehicles make up 30% of the cars (not just government cars) on Indian roads by 2030 in order to reduce dependence on oil and curb air pollution. However, Saurabh Kumar, the head of Energy Efficiency Services, which is leading the government’s electric vehicle charge, told Bloomberg that there were only 250 government-procured electric cars in operation in India at the moment - 150 in Delhi and the rest in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Worse still, only 200 charging points have been constructed to date, half of which are in Delhi. While this could be due to the confusion over the licences and permissions required to set up charging stations, the Ministry of Power had issued <a href="https://powermin.nic.in/sites/default/files/webform/notices/Clarification_on_charging_infrastructure_for_Electric_Vehicles_with_reference_to_the_provisions_of_the_Electrcity_Act_2003.pdf">a statement</a> last month clarifying that companies setting up these points did not require a separate licence for the transmission or distribution of electricity. Despite its lack of progress, the government released a second tender in March 2018 inviting bids for the supply of <a href="https://www.fortuneindia.com/macro/eesl-floats-second-tender-for-acquiring-10000-evs/101658">10,000 new EVs</a>. That will likely be put on hold as the first phase of the plan moves towards completion.

India’s government has postponed its electric vehicle replacement plan to next year

ROSCOE, S.D. (AP) - Robert Malsam nearly went broke in the 1980s when corn was cheap. So now that prices are high and he can finally make a profit, he's not about to apologize for ripping up prairieland to plant corn.
Across the Dakotas and Nebraska, more than 1 million acres of the Great Plains are giving way to cornfields as farmers transform the wild expanse that once served as the backdrop for American pioneers.
This expansion of the Corn Belt is fueled in part by America's <keyword id="60895" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Green-energy">green energy</keyword> policy, which requires oil companies to blend billions of gallons of corn ethanol into their gasoline. In 2010, fuel became the No. 1 use for corn in America, a title it held in 2011 and 2012 and narrowly lost this year. That helps keep prices high.
"It's not hard to do the math there as to what's profitable to have," Malsam said. "I think an ethanol plant is a farmer's friend."
What the green-energy program has made profitable, however, is far from green. A policy intended to reduce global warming is encouraging a farming practice that actually could worsen it.
That's because plowing into untouched grassland releases carbon dioxide that has been naturally locked in the soil. It also increases erosion and requires farmers to use fertilizers and other industrial chemicals. In turn, that destroys native plants and wipes out wildlife habitats.
It appeared so damaging that scientists warned that America's corn-for-ethanol policy would fail as an anti-global warming strategy if too many farmers plowed over virgin land.
The Obama administration argued that would not happen. But the administration didn't set up a way to monitor whether it actually happened.
It did.
More than 1.2 million acres of grassland have been lost since the federal government required that gasoline be blended with increasing amounts of ethanol, an Associated Press analysis of satellite data found. Plots that were wild grass or pastureland seven years ago are now corn and soybean fields.
That's in addition to the 5 million acres of farmland that had been aside for conservation - more than Yellowstone, Everglades and Yosemite National Parks combined - that have vanished since Obama took office.
In South Dakota, more than 370,000 acres of grassland have been uprooted and farmed from since 2006. In Edmunds County, a rural community about two hours north of the capital, Pierre, at least 42,000 acres of grassland have become cropland - one of the largest turnovers in the region.
Malsam runs a 13-square-mile family farm there. He grows corn, soybeans and wheat, then rents out his grassland for grazing. Each year, the family converts another 160 acres from grass to cropland.
Chemicals kill the grass. Machines remove the rocks. Then tractors plow it three times to break up the sod and prepare it for planting.
Scattered among fields of 7-foot tall corn and thigh-high soybeans, some stretches of grassland still exist. Cattle munch on some grass. And "prairie potholes" - natural ponds ranging from small pools to larger lakes - support a smattering of ducks, geese, pelicans and herons.
Yet within a mile of Malsam's farm, federal satellite data show, more than 300 acres of grassland have been converted to soybeans and corn since 2006.
Nebraska has lost at least 830,000 acres of grassland, a total larger than New York City, Los Angeles and Dallas combined.
"It's great to see farmers making money. It hasn't always been that way," said Craig Cox of the Environmental Working Group. He advocates for clean energy but opposes the ethanol mandate. "If we're going to push the land this hard, we really need to intensify conservation in lockstep with production, and that's just not happening," he said.
Jeff Lautt, CEO of Poet, which operates ethanol refineries across the country, including in South Dakota, said it's up to farmers how to use their land.
"The last I checked, it is still an open market. And farmers that own land are free to farm their land to the extent they think they can make money on it or whatever purpose they need," he said.
Yet Chris Wright, a professor at South Dakota State University who has studied land conversion, said: "The conversation about land preservation should start now before it becomes a serious problem." Wright reviewed the AP's methodology for determining land conversion.
The AP's analysis used government satellite data to count how much grassland existed in 2006 in each county, then compare each plot of land to corresponding satellite data from 2012.
The data from the U.S. Geological Survey and the Department of Agriculture identify corn and soybean fields. That allowed the AP to see which plots of grassland became cropland.
To reach its conservative estimate of 1.2 million acres lost, the AP excluded grassland that had been set aside under the government's Conservation Reserve Program, in which old farmland is allowed to return to a near-natural state. The AP used half-acre sections of earth and excluded tiny tracts that became corn, which experts said were most likely outliers.
Corn prices more than doubled in the years after Congress passed the ethanol mandate in 2007. Now, Malsam said, farmers can make about $500 an acre planting corn.
His farm has just become profitable in the past five years, allowing him and his wife, Theresa, to build a new house on the farmstead.
Four miles south, signs at each end of the town of Roscoe announce a population of only 324. But the town, which relies in part on incomes like Malsam's, supports a school, a restaurant, a bank, a grocery store and a large farm machinery store.
The manager of the equipment dealership, Kaleb Rodgers, said the booming farm economy has helped the town and the dealership prosper. The business with 28 employees last year sold a dozen combines at about $300,000 apiece, plus more than 60 tractors worth between $100,000 and $300,000, he said.
"If we didn't have any farmers we wouldn't have a community here. We wouldn't have a business. I wouldn't be sitting here. I wouldn't be able to feed my family," Rodgers said. "I think ethanol is a very good thing."
Jim Faulstich, president of the South Dakota Grasslands Coalition, said the nation's ethanol and crop insurance policies have encouraged the transformation of the land.
Faulstich, who farms and ranches in central South Dakota near Highmore, said much of the land being converted is not suited to crop production, and South Dakota's strong winds and rains will erode the topsoil.
"I guess a good motto would be to farm the best and leave the rest," he said.

Government Green Energy Laws Are Having Some Ruinous Environmental Consequences In The Heartland

India as a civilisation has revered nature for its life-giving properties and has been powered by renewable sources since ancient times. Modern India generates almost a third of its power using renewables sources – water, wind and a small part from the sun (&lt;1%) while the rest comes largely from fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas). These fuels have been the mainstays of power generation for the past few decades and would have continued to do so but for their escalating prices. Also, an ongoing lack of consistent fuel supply to meet even the current demand, along with the clamour against global warming, has put the energy industry under increased pressure and the focus is now on renewable sources of power like the sun, water, geothermal, biomass and wind. 
 
Large hydro projects, comprising almost a third of the current power generation sources, have hit numerous roadblocks due to people displacement, global warming, habitat destruction and land submergence. Biomass initially started off well but due to unplanned supply chain issues, has resulted in almost 75% of the 2 GW installed capacity coming to a standstill. Tidal and geothermal are almost non-existent in India while wind has played a significant role in increasing the acceptability of renewables, but hasn’t really contributed to a scalable solution. Biomass has been an abject failure due to fuel price rise, with 75% of the installed 2 GW capacity currently without adequate biomass supply. Wind turbines generate unscheduled power for just a few months, making them unsuitable for mainstream power generation, especially in the Indian context, and were only successful due to huge corporate tax benefits. 
 That just leaves us with the sun which delivers more than enough <keyword id="6357019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="solar-energy">solar energy</keyword> every hour to our planet to power the entire world’s energy needs for a year. However, the major drawback is its periodic nature and capturing this energy for round-the-clock delivery at cost-effective pricing is the next paradigm of energy that is now receiving attention and interest. 
 Clean and <keyword id="60895" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Green-energy">green energy</keyword> is a basic theory of modern life although the governmental focus is more on grid power, which is a polluting, inefficient and unreliable source of power. AT&amp;C losses account for close to 40% of the total power generation, amounting to a total of Rs 75 thousand crore and more every year that could wipe out energy poverty across the country. Smart grids and infrastructure updates are the need of the hour. But the government is still focused on spending Rs 2 lakh crore to bail out bankrupt Discoms whereas that amount could have been used to deliver distributed energy and reduce dependence on Discoms for a large part of the country. 
 The <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword> recognised this potential and the MNRE (Ministry of New and <keyword id="34553" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="renewable-energy">Renewable Energy</keyword>) launched an ambitious programme in 2010 called JNNSM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission) to deploy 22,000 MW of grid-connected <keyword id="70990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Solar-power">solar power</keyword> by 2020. The programme has seen limited success with phase I meeting its PV targets and phase 2 on the way in the form of 750 MW via the Viability Gap <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="Funding">Funding</keyword> (VGF) programme. 
 
In the initial programme, CSP (Concentrated Solar Power), aka GemaSolar, but without storage, was touted as a replacement to thermal plants and received majority of the allocation but failed to take off significantly, with deadline extensions and penalty waivers being the norm. There are talks to revive this programme and its success will decide whether solar power can be considered as a base load alternative. 
 
Thermal-concentrated sources of energy are optimal for urban and semi-urban areas. However, towns need to reduce dependence on the grid and adopt the German model, which enables local, as well as distributed power, using net-metering. 
 
The MNRE programmes have barely managed to dent the potential of distributed RE, requiring focused attention and financial muscle to enable the nation on its path towards renewable energy. But MNRE has not paid out a large part of the residential subsidies of 30% of capital costs over the past year due to lack of funds, a serious damper, especially for solar on rooftops. The current VGF programme is scheduled to cost the MNRE Rs 2,500 crore and push solar procurement costs down to below Rs 5.5 per KWh, enabling it to compete with conventional energy. 
 
The essence of solar success lies in empowering the distributed 400 million poor who are currently consuming fossil fuel not touched by the power grid and thus reduce India’s CAD (current account deficit), environmental pollution and health concerns. But there lies the irony. The rural/tribal populace pays nearly twice or thrice the rate of power than those living in cities, but has received minimal attention although the impact is the highest to those using fossil fuel and government subsidies in daily life. 
 
Every unit of power generated has the ability to multiply economic growth, especially in rural areas that suffer from energy paucity due to unreliable connections or load shedding. State governments of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and a few other states have already initiated proactive steps by increasing the state subsidies, in addition to subsidies from the central government, and are also looking at replacing grid-connected agricultural equipment with solar-enabled ones. 
 
Solar has the potential to reduce the current energy peak deficit significantly and improve delivery due to its distributed nature, provided it can get the appropriate financial support from the Centre, as well as all the states. The central government continues to think that grid power, with its huge losses, is the solution. But in reality, distributed energy, delivered to every home and the excess pumped into the grid, would result into least amount of losses while reducing energy generation needs. 
 
Over the next few years, solar power will come into its own, both from financial viability and availability perspectives, with exponential growth in distributed solar, coupled with storage, transforming the entire energy spectrum in India. The future of Indian energy segment is here and it is the Sun that will continue to power our economic and energy growth into the next millennium.

It can power anything that uses electricity including electric vehicles and electronic devices. The government policy is aimed at boosting green hydrogen production in the country, which can also reduce India’s dependence on importing over 80% of the oil and gas requirements. The policy focuses on increasing dependency on cleaner forms of energy and abandoning fossil fuels. The policy says green hydrogen and green ammonia is one of the major requirements for reduction of emissions. The government believes hydrogen can play a huge role in shifting to clean energy. It allows companies to easily set up the capacity to generate electricity from renewable sources such as solar or wind anywhere in the country. The government is also planning to bring a production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for manufacturing electrolysers for producing green hydrogen. Large companies like <keyword id="6355199" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reliance-industries" source="Orion">Reliance Industries</keyword> Limited (RIL), Adani Group, Larsen &amp; Toubro (L&amp;T) with multiple factories that release several forms of chemicals in some way or another will take advantage of the policy. To help make Gujarat net-zero carbon, Reliance proposes to invest $67.4 billion in the state over 10 to 15 years to set up a 100 gigawatt renewable energy power plant and green hydrogen ecosystem development. <ul><li>Reliance Industries has announced to produce green hydrogen and also make an electrolyser factory to manufacture green energy.</li><li>Larsen &amp; Toubro announced plans to manufacture hydrogen electrolysers in India. Recently, it entered into a pact with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay to carry out a joint research and develop the green hydrogen technology.</li><li>Indian Oil Corp, one of the largest fossil fuel retailers, also announced its plans to build a green hydrogen plant at its Mathura refinery in Uttar Pradesh.</li><li>GAIL plans to build India's largest green hydrogen-making plant as it looks to supplement its natural gas business with carbon-free fuel.</li><li>NTPC also plans to produce green hydrogen.</li></ul>The policy allows 25 years of free inter-state power transmission for any new renewable energy plants that produce green hydrogen for projects commissioned before June 30, 2025. Adani Green Energy stock has jumped 45% this year to become more valuable than L&T, Maruti Suzuki, and Axis Bank

Support for this idea is widespread, and crosses party lines. Over two-thirds of Germans approve of the plan, which is also backed by the German Green Party, the Social Democratic Party, the Free Democratic Party, and Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union.
This plan is known as the Energiewende; wende, which means turn, refers to the peaceful revolution that culminated with the end of the Cold War.
<keyword id="87" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword>’s green revolution was characterized by private development of renewables.
The government did not attempt to finance green energy, rather, it incentivized these alternative power sources by way of a feed-in-tariff. This means the government pays producers of <keyword id="34553" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="renewable-energy">renewable energy</keyword> and allows them to purchase their electricity at a discount.
Rainer Baake, director of Agora Energiewende, believes Germany is unique in that “about 50 percent of the installed capacity of renewables is in the hands of normal citizens and farmers.”
However, Germany’s development of green energy led to rising costs for consumers. The overall price of electricity has surged by over 66 percent after the passage of the German Renewable Energy Act in 2000. 
In addition, Germany faces the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/more-renewables-means-more-fossil-fuels-2012-12">same problem that plagues California</a>: how to provide energy during windless or sunless days. The unreliability is the reason why <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-08-21/germany-will-still-rely-on-fossil-fuels-in-2050-waz-reports.html">a study by Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH</a> indicates that coal and gas power plants will still have to provide 60 percent of the stable energy sources for days when the weather doesn’t cooperate with the production of renewables.
In order to integrate renewable energy sources onto the power grid, Germany’s best bet would be to invest in a $25+ billion smart grid. As <a href="http://sustainability.thomsonreuters.com/2013/01/14/smart-grids-and-alternative-energy-integration/">Reuters reports</a>, “The crucial solution that smart grids provide is the means to control the fluctuating voltage supplied due to daily and seasonal weather variability.”

Germany Plans To Eliminate Fossil Fuel Use By 2050

India might soon be completing the biggest clean-tech acquisition deal. If all goes well, the largest renewable energy development company in the world by generation capacity, SunEdison will be buying Mumbai-based Continuum <keyword id="83273" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wind-energy">Wind Energy</keyword>. 
 Just when the Prime Minister has been pushing for <keyword id="154273" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="clean-energy">clean energy</keyword>, here comes the bliss. 
 As per a news report in The Economic Times, Indian clean energy sector has already seen international players like <keyword id="315881" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sembcorp">Sembcorp</keyword> and investors such as <keyword id="6361649" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Goldman-Sachs">Goldman Sachs</keyword> take control of Indian clean power developers in the backdrop of the <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword>'s renewed focus on the space and its ambitious targto add 100 gw (1,00,000 mw) renewable capacity by 2022. SunEdison has already made a non-binding offer, valuing Continuum Wind Energy at Rs 3,720-3,900 crore ($620-650 million), inclusive of its debt, according to the people cited. 
 The news report further says, originally founded by an investment banker turned <keyword id="60895" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Green-energy">green energy</keyword> entrepreneur Arvind Bansal and his IIM-Ahmedabad classmate Vikash Saraf of the Essar Group, Continuum Wind Energy is currently controlled by Morgan Stanley's infrastructure-focussed <keyword id="34499" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="private-equity">private equity</keyword> fund - Morgan Stanley Infrastructure (MSI). 
 
MSI, a $4-billion global platform, is part of the global financial services firm's private investment unit which invests directly in companies. In 2012, MSI had invested $200 million (Rs 1,200 crore) into the company through a convertible instrument to buy a majority stake. Till date, they have already deployed around $160 million, said sources. 
 
Both MSI and the erstwhile promoters are expected to cash out post takeover but Bansal and the senior management will stay on for 3-4 years. By the end of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016, Continuum is expected to have a portfolio of 500 mw of operating assets spread across wind parks in MP, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Analysts tracking the sector estimate that the company should close FY15 with Rs 400 crore of revenue. 
 
The ET further says, earlier this year, the SunEdison signed an agreement with Adani Enterprises for a $4-billion joint venture to build solar panels in Gujarat. "SunEdison has been scaling up in India, especially in wind. In May, they acquired two renewable energy portfolios totalling 140 mw. This includes the India wind portfolio of around 100 mw of Spain-based FersaEnergias Renovables SA," said an energy consultant who tracks the space. 
 "Globally too, they are adding to their wind portfolio significantly through buyouts," he added. Last November, it agreed to take over First Wind, one of the largest wind power developers in the <keyword id="6356955" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-states">United States</keyword>, for $2.4 billion - making it the largest <keyword id="208390" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="player-in-this-sector">player in this sector</keyword>. That acquisition will expand SunEdison's project installation pipeline for 2015 by an estimated 500 mw. In addition, it will also expand the total capacity of TerraForm Power's generating portfolio by more than 50%.

Here is the catch – while universities and colleges are catching up, it’s not as fast as the demand growth. The growth in green job postings is around 15% in the last one year, says LinkedIn. Naukri pegs it as high as 27% with the EV sector being the star. “According to the Global Green Skills Report 2023 by LinkedIn, India has seen a 140% jump in auto industry workers with Electric Vehicle(EV) skills from 2018-23. Krishnan says that the rapid industrial expansion outpaces curriculum updates in colleges, resulting in a shortage of skilled talent. Most of the expertise that’s needed to drive India’s green transformation requires strong foundational STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills. “Currently, the key qualifications needed for such (green) roles would be an engineering degree with 5-10 years’ experience within the sustainability sector and experience of sustainability certification schemes,” says Ghatpande. In fact, most of the jobs require engineering degrees — both standalone or specialised to environment science. “The common degrees are Environmental Science or Engineering for roles in environmental conservation and management. Renewable Energy Engineering or Sustainable Energy Studies for careers in the renewable energy sector. Agricultural Science or Sustainable Agriculture for those interested in sustainable farming practices,” says Jaideep P Kewalramani, head of employability business and COO, TeamLease EdTech. Green certifications in vogue On top of the basic degrees, there are certifications as well. Green Building Certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for sustainable construction and architecture. Certifications in Environmental Management like ISO 14001, for professionals focusing on sustainability within organisations. For now, organisations which quickly need a lot of employees with green skills are developing talent by upskilling and reskilling the existing workforce on green technologies. “Also there is an active collaboration with academia in curating programs to create talent pipelines,” says Kumar. Added to that several online learning platforms offer tailored certificate courses and modules to help professionals kickstart their careers in the EV industry. “These courses often feature industry-relevant curricula, real-world projects, live mentorship by experts, and expert-led masterclasses,” says Krishnan. India is steadfast in its commitment to go green. As such jobs explode, it’s up to the professionals and young aspirants to build their green skills to move towards a sustainable career ahead. India’s green jobs are growing but are colleges ready to supply the talent?

Mark Green of Tennessee was late to report a stock purchase worth up to $250,000.</li><li>It comes as Congress is debating whether to ban lawmakers and their spouses from trading stocks.</li></ul>Republican Rep. Mark Green of Tennessee's 7th Congressional District has violated a federal conflict-of-interest law by waiting too long to disclose a personal stock trade, according to an Insider review of Green's latest financial disclosure.Green purchased between $100,000 and $250,000 of stock in NGL Energy Partners, a midstream oil and gas service provider to producers and end users, on June 2. But he waited until August 1 to disclose it in a certified congressional document.Members of Congress are required to report such trades no later than 45 days after making them, according to the federal <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-act-congress-trading-stocks-investing-2022-3">Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act</a> of 2012. Lawmakers are not required to provide the specific value of their trades, and instead, report them in broad ranges.Since 2021, Insider's "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/financial-conflicts-congress-members-rated-2021-12?page=stories">Conflicted Congress</a>" project and other publications have uncovered <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/congress-stock-act-violations-senate-house-trading-2021-9">67 lawmakers</a>, now including Green, who have violated the STOCK Act by disclosing their trades late. Insider additionally found at least <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/congress-staff-violated-stock-act-conflicts-of-interest-possible-2021-12">182 senior congressional staffers</a> who also violated provisions of the STOCK Act."Congressman Green unfortunately missed a notice from his broker about the June 2 trade, so [he] filed it 15 days late when he went to file the other recent trades," Green spokesperson Rebecca Galfano said in an email to Insider. "Congressman Green has no insight into how trades are made, and is only notified after they occur. In fact, in his first year in Congress, to go above and beyond even the hint of impropriety, he instructed his broker in writing to manage his family's investments and to disregard any instructions from him should he have tried to provide input (which he has not)."Green "believes firmly that using insider information for personal benefit is a crime that should be strictly enforced," Galfano said. And while Green has not yet been contacted by the House Ethics Committee about any infraction, he "will do whatever the committee requires," she added. Earlier this year, Green began focusing more on energy independence in the United States, tweeting about it several times in early March."Say it with me: American. Energy. Independence. "Period."Later in March, Green <a href="https://markgreen.house.gov/2022/3/rep-green-demands-an-immediate-ban-on-russian-iranian-and-venezuelan-oil">introduced a bill</a> to ban the United States from buying oil from Venezuela, Russia, and Iran, and he noted in a press release, again, that it was time for America to "become energy independent."Green reported selling his shares of another company, Energy Transfer LP in June and July. He reported that they were cumulatively worth up to $215,000. The Energy Transfer sales were reported on time and did not violate the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-act-congress-trading-stocks-investing-2022-3">STOCK Act</a>'s disclosure provision.<h2><div type="image" title="Nancy Pelosi" height="1333" width="1778" msid="93308402" hostid="261" sizebytes="73726"></div></h2><h2>A ban on congressional stock trading?</h2>As Green continues to make stock trades, members of Congress are debating whether they and their spouses should even be allowed to trade individual stocks.House Democrats are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/congress-stock-trading-house-dems-close-proposing-ban-report-2022-7">planning the imminent introduction</a> of consensus legislation to ban congressional stock trading. But disagreements over what, exactly, should appear in that bill remain, and a working group of US senators may have their own ideas. Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office, meanwhile, told <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/pelosi-commits-lawmaker-stock-ban-vote-september-questions-husband-trades">Fox Business</a> that she would hold a vote on a bill sometime in September to ban members of Congress from trading, though the speaker has not always been on board with the idea.When asked in late 2021, Pelosi <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/we-are-free-market-economy-pelosi-rejects-stock-ban-congress-2021-12">pushed back</a> against the idea of a trading ban, saying "We are a free-market economy. "I think we need to go beyond reporting and disclosure around transactions and we need to have some actual restrictions and prohibitions. The good news is that if that kind of restriction or prohibition is too onerous for people, they always have the option of not being a member of Congress."
