The slums here are more densely populated then Dharavi and the population suffers from underlying health conditions, especially respiratory illness” Aby Azim Azmi, a Samajwadi Party MLA told Mumbai Mirror. Govandi is yet another densely populated slums where over 500,000 people live in a 4 sq km area. "Identifying affected people in slums is a challenge. Fever camps have been effective. Sudden rise in cases is seen as the test result have come in the last two to three days. These patients were kept in quarantine after their swab was collected," Assistant Municipal Commissioner of M-east ward, Sudhansu Dwivedi told India Today. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has carried out a massive sanitisation drive to clean all the toilets in the ward. Earlier, the number of injured people during the celebration was given as 238 but in a significant increase, the number increased to 245. Many 'Govindas' who are part of the many human pyramids formed during the celebrations of playing the dahi Handi are under treatment at various private hospitals, while several got discharged after treatment. The injured have been admitted to hospitals including the JJ Hospital, St. George Hospital, GT Hospital, Poddar Hospital, KEM Hospital, Nair Hospital, Sion Hospital, Rajawadi Hospital, Veer Savarkar Hospital, MT Agarwal Hospital, Kurla Bhabha Hospital, Shatabdi Govandi Hospital, Bandra Bhabha Hospital, Trauma Care Hospital, VN Desai Hospital, MW Desai Hospital, Cooper Hospital, BDBA Hospital and Leelavati Hospital. According to the latest reports, around 207 people have been discharged from various hospitals. Last year, during Dahi Handi celebrations, as many as 195 'Govindas' were injured in different incidents. The BMC reported that out of the 195 'Govindas', 18 were admitted to hospital while the remaining 177 were discharged. One of the major cultural activities, Dahi Handi is celebrated by filling an earthen pot with curd, butter, and other milk products. Subsequently, a group forms a human pyramid to reach the matka and break it. The tradition symbolises <keyword id="19906323" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lord-Krishna" source="keywords">Lord Krishna</keyword>'s playfulness and innocence, as well as his love for butter and curd. Dahi Handi celebrations commemorate Lord Krishna's act of eating Dahi hung at a height when he was a child. As per the Hindu calendar, Lord Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, was born on the eighth day of the month of Bhadra. The day mostly falls in August or September as per the Western calendar. The festival of Janmashtami is celebrated by offering prayers to Lord Krishna, with beautifully decorated swings, dance, and music performances along with the Dahi Handi competitions.

Mumbai, May 8 () A team of Mumbai Crime Branch andMaharashtra FDA seized stocks of gutkha, cigarette and othertobacco items worth almost Rs 50 lakh in Govandi and arrestedthree people during the lockdown for the novel coronavirusoutbreak, officials said on Friday.Acting on a tip-off, a team of Unit X of Crime Branchand the state's Food and Drug Administration intercepted atempo, which had a pass for ferrying essential items, inShivajinagar in Govandi on Thursday and made the seizure, anofficial said."We seized gutkha, cigarettes and other tobacco itemsworth Rs 21.48 lakh. Two persons who were held on the spotinformed us about a godown in Govandi which had Rs 28 lakhworth of gutkha stock. Lockdown: Gutkha, cigarettes worth Rs 50L seized in Mumbai

Mumbai, June 7 (IANS) The Mumbai fire brigade has not come across any gas leak incident during visits to different places in the metropolis during the night, officials said here on Sunday. As many as 17 fire engines along with senior officers were sent to various locations in Chembur, Mankhurd, Ghatkopar, Powai, and Andheri following complaints about gas leaks since late Saturday night. The fire brigade men covered an area spread over several square kms to locate the source of the alleged gas leak, including a search at the US Vitamin Company in Govandi east. From 9.30 pm last night, the fire brigade had received phone calls and social media messages from people who complained of a mysterious foul smell - suspected to be a gas leak - in several east-central suburbs which, however, turned out to be unfounded after investigation. Nevertheless, as a precaution, the fire brigade has advised people that in case of any suspected gas leak, they should not panic but breathe through a wet towel, cloth or handkerchief to avoid ill-effects till help arrives. --IANS qn/tsb

(Eds: updates with latest tally) New Delhi, Apr 24 () The COVID-19 situation is "especially serious" in major or emerging hotspots like Ahmedabad, Surat, Hyderabad, Chennai and Thane, the Centre said on Friday, as it rushed inter-ministerial central teams(IMCT) to monitor the situation in these cities. The assessment by the Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA) came on a day when Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner Vijay Nehra said the number of COVID-19 patients in the Gujarat city may grow to eight lakh by the end of May if the current four-day period of doubling of the cases continues. So far, Ahmedabad city has reported 1,638 cases, the highest in Gujarat which accounted for over 2,800 infections. In a statement, the MHA said violations of lockdown measures reported in some parts of the country posed a serious health hazard to public and may lead to the spread of COVID-19. "The situation is especially serious in major hotspot districts or emerging hotspots like Ahmedabad and Surat (Gujarat), Thane (Maharashtra), Hyderabad (Telangana), and Chennai (Tamil Nadu)," the statement said. Coronavirus cases were inching towards 7,000 in Maharashtra which was on the top of the tally followed by Gujarat. Tamil Nadu(1,755) was in the sixth position while Telangana accounted for 983 cases. The central team visiting Kolkata to assess the COVID-19 situation, meanwhile, wrote to the West Bengal government seeking a detailed report on the functioning of the coronavirus deaths audit committee and a meeting with its members, as it expressed displeasure over the arrangements in hospitals and quarantine centres. In a letter to Chief Secretary Rajiv Sinha, the IMCT led by senior bureaucrat Apurba Chandra sought to know the system of approving the declaration of death of COVID-19 patients by the committee of doctors, which was set up by the state government. The state government is facing allegations of underplaying coronavirus cases and deaths. Four teams headed by Additional Secretary-level officers will visit Ahmedabad, Surat, Hyderabad and Chennai, MHA Joint Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava told a press conference. These teams will be in addition to the six IMCTs constituted earlier, she said. The teams have been constituted for a spot assessment of the COVID-19 hotspot districts. The six teams are in Mumbai, Pune (Maharashtra), Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Jaipur (Rajasthan) and West Bengal (one team for Kolkata and adjoining districts and the other for North Bengal). The team in Mumbai will also visit Thane. The Home Ministry said that in some of the districts, a number of violations of the lockdown measures have been reported, posing a serious health hazard and risk for the spread of COVID-19, which is against the general interest of public. "These violations include incidents ranging from violence on frontline healthcare professionals, attacks on police personnel, violations of social distancing norms in market places and opposition to setting up of quarantine centres and so on," it said. The ministry said if such incidents are allowed to occur without any restraining measures in hotspot districts and emerging hotspots or even places where large outbreaks or clusters may be expected, it would pose a serious health hazard for the people of the country. The IMCTs would use expertise of the central government and augment the states' efforts to fight and contain the spread of COVID-19 effectively. These teams would make an on the spot assessment of the situation and issue necessary directions to state authorities for its redressal and submit their report to the central government in the larger interest of general public, the ministry said. They would be focusing on a range of issues including compliance and implementation of lockdown measures as per guidelines issued under the Disaster Management Act 2005, supply of essential commodities, social distancing in movement of people outside their homes, preparedness of health infrastructure, hospital facilities and sample statistics in the district. Safety of health professionals, availability of test kits, PPEs, masks and other safety equipment; and conditions of the relief camps for labour and poor people will also be looked after by the IMCTs, the statement said. The teams comprise public health specialists and officers of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), whose expertise can be leveraged by the state government for management of COVID-19 pandemic. The six teams which were earlier sent have shared their observations and findings with the state governments, Secretary Srivastava said. Srivastava said the IMCT team in Mumbai has suggested to install portable toilets in Dharavi slums to augment the number of community toilets as people are dependent on such toilets and have to come out inspite of the lockdown ban. It found that in Dharavi people are dependent on home quarantine and suggested to arrange for institutional quarantine for 2,000-3,000 people besides increasing the testing capacity for COVID-19 and to increase the strength of surveillance teams, the official said.
