Nepal, which has been experiencing more frequent instances of <keyword id="20144034" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="extreme-weather" source="keywords">extreme weather</keyword> in recent times, became the victim of intense floods and <keyword id="19964849" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="landslides" source="keywords">landslides</keyword> once again over the weekend. An estimated 192 people have lost their lives, nearly 100 are injured and at least 30 individuals remain missing.<br /><br />Sources suggest that a low pressure system over the Bay of Bengal and the unusual positioning of the monsoon trough triggered exceptionally heavy rains across Nepal on Friday. Large swathes of eastern and central Nepal witnessed incessant downpours, resulting in overflowing of the Bagmati — Kathmandu’s main river.<br /><br />One of the hardest-hit areas has been the <keyword id="23370774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Koshi-River-basin" source="keywords">Koshi River basin</keyword>, with its flooding impacting several districts like Sunsari, Saptari and Udayapur. Other rivers like <keyword id="23370775" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gandaki" source="keywords">Gandaki</keyword> and Karnali also caused widespread flooding, with damage concentrated in Banke, Bardiya and Dang districts. The low-lying Terai plains in southern Nepal also faced severe flooding due to the accumulation of rainwater from higher elevations, especially in Morang, Jhapa and Rautahat districts.<br /><br />Reports indicate that the floods have damaged at least 322 houses and 16 bridges across Nepal. Many claimed that they have never seen such a devastating flood and inundation in the Kathmandu Valley in 40-45 years. But flooding was hardly the only side effect of the intense rains.<br /><br />Hilly areas, which are aplenty in Nepal, witnessed landslides. Areas like Sindhupalchok, Dolakha, and Lamjung experienced significant landslides that blocked highways and cut off access to remote villages. In <keyword id="20996363" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gorkha" source="keywords">Gorkha</keyword> and Rasuwa, landslides destroyed homes and caused fatalities, with dozens feared trapped under debris.<br /><br />While thousands remain stranded in various parts of Nepal due to road disruption, as many as 4,000 people affected by flood and inundation have been rescued by the <keyword id="21227724" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nepal-Army" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Nepal Army" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Nepal Army">Nepal Army</keyword>, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel, Ministry of Home Affairs spokesperson Rishiram Pokharel said.<br /><br />Health experts are warning of the outbreak of water-borne diseases, including cholera, as sanitation facilities have been compromised in many flood-affected areas. Hospitals in Nepalgunj and other cities are already overwhelmed with injured people and mobile health units have been deployed to provide medical aid in more remote locations.<br /><br />Experts have pointed out that <keyword id="19907392" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-change" source="keywords">climate change</keyword> is intensifying the frequency of such extreme weather events. Nepal's fragile ecosystem, combined with poor infrastructure, makes the country highly vulnerable to floods and landslides. In the aftermath, rebuilding will require extensive resources, and long-term solutions are being discussed, such as the construction of river embankments, improving disaster preparedness, and better <keyword id="21033786" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flood-forecasting" source="keywords">flood forecasting</keyword> systems.<br /><br />For now, despite the forecast for rain to continue in Nepal until Tuesday, there have been signs of some easing since Sunday.<br />  <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113758450" title="Several Bihar districts on alert as IMD warns of heavy rain and flash floods" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div><br />

While no other company could commit to the huge order because of lack of time, <keyword id="57367" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="MKU">MKU</keyword> got the emergency order of 10,000 mountaineering boots, even though it had a monthly capacity of 8,000 units at that time. <br /><br /> "As the soldiers were being moved to the battle front, we completed the order working day and night before the start of attack. The order was the turning point for our company and our efforts were very much appreciated by the Army after the war," said MKU MD Neeraj Gupta. <br /><br /> Since then, MKU has come a long way, and now manufactures a wide range of defence products including bullet-proof helmets and jackets, body armours and night-vision devices, supplying military equipment to more than 100 countries. Kathmandu, Situated on the precarious Himalayan seismic zone, <keyword id="12266" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nepal" source="Orion">Nepal</keyword> is a highly <keyword id="19384998" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="earthquake-prone-country" source="Orion">earthquake-prone country</keyword> and its quake-battered western mountainous region is likely to face a threat of a bigger earthquake, a seismologist says. According to the government's post-disaster needs assessment (PDNA) report, Nepal is the 11th most earthquake-prone country in the world. <br /><br />So, when a powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal's remote western mountainous region late on Friday night, it was not the first one for the day or for this month. The earthquake in western Nepal just before midnight on Friday was the latest in a long list of over 70 quakes in the country in 2023, official data showed. <br /><br />At least 140 people died in the powerful temblor with its epicentre in Jajarkot district, about 500 km northwest of Kathmandu, invoking the painful memories of the devastating 2015 earthquake. <br /><br />"There has been a collision between Indian and Eurasian plates going on underground for a long time which has accumulated tremendous energy," Bharat Koirala, senior seismologist at the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre, Nepal, told PTI. <br /><br />Nepal is located at the boundary of these two plates and therefore lies in a highly active seismic region. Therefore, earthquakes are common in Nepal. <br /><br />"Western Nepal is under the threat of bigger earthquakes," Koirala says and adds, "There has not been a big earthquake in Western Nepal for the last 520 years. So a lot of energy has been accumulated and earthquakes are the only medium to release that energy." <br /><br />"From Gorkha (district) in western Nepal to Dehradun of India, lots of energy has been accumulated due to the tectonic movement. Therefore, small or big earthquakes are taking place in these areas to release the energy, which is normal," Koirala said. <br /><br />The youngest mountain ranges in the world, the Himalayas have risen up as a result of the collision of the Eurasian plate, with Tibet at its southern edge, and the Indian continental plate and over the centuries have continued to evolve tectonically, which the seismologists said, advance two metres closer every century resulting in sudden release of elastic energy stored in the active geological faults inside the earth causing movement in the crust. <br /><br />Data from the Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre shows that since January 1, 2023, till date, there have been a total of 70 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 and above in Nepal. Of these, as many as 13 were between magnitude 5 and 6 while three were above magnitude 6.0. <br /><br />Every day two or more magnitude earthquakes have been happening for centuries to release the energy accumulated through the tectonic plate movement, he adds. <br /><br />Asserting that there is always the risk of occurrence of a bigger earthquake in western Nepal in the future, Koirala says, "There has not been any big or medium-sized earthquake around the Jajarkot area for the past 2-3 decades. But we cannot predict when and how big can happen?" <br /><br />On October 22, a powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake rocked Dhading district, near Nepal's capital Kathmandu and damaged 20 houses, spreading panic among people. <br /><br />A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake and ten other smaller between 4 to 5 magnitude hit western Nepal's Bajhang district on October 3 but did little damage. <br /><br />A 7.8 magnitude earthquake and subsequent aftershocks killed around 9,000 and injured nearly 22,000 people in Nepal in 2015. A total of 3.5 million people were rendered homeless.

Search team finds the body of famed US mountain climber Hilaree Nelson 2 days after she went missing on Himalaya peak

By Shirish B Pradhan <p>Kathmandu, Jul 4 () Nepal on Saturday confirmed two more deaths due to COVID-19, taking the country's death toll to 34, while the number of infections soared to 15,491. </p><p>The country reported 232 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours. </p><p>The death toll rose to 34 on Saturday after two more COVID-19 patients died, the Ministry of Health and Population confirmed. </p><p>A 44-year-old man from Gorkha district, who earlier tested positive for COVID-19, died in course of treatment at the hospital. He had returned from Qatar on Wednesday and was staying at a quarantine facility in his village. </p><p>Similarly, another 75-year-old man from Rupandehi died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kathmandu Thursday. He was a tuberculosis patient. </p> Health Ministry spokesperson Dr Jageshwar Gautam, at a daily media briefing, said that 9,042 corona active patients are undergoing treatment at various isolation centers as of now. Before this, he served full three-year terms as the Indian Army Chief after he superseded two officers in 2016. The Eastern Army Commander Lt. Gen. Mukund Naravane will replace Rawat as the Army chief. <br /><br />Rawat had also served as the Vice Chief of Army Staff for a brief period from September 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016. <br /><br />An alumnus of St. Edward School, Shimla, the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and, Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Rawat was commissioned into the 5th battalion of the Eleven Gorkha Rifles in 1978. <br /><br />Counter insurgency specialist and high altitude warfare experience. <br /><br />Rawat was well known for his experience in high altitude warfare and counter-insurgency operations. He was also a part of instructional appointments at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun and at Army War College, Mhow. <br /><br />As the Chief of Army Staff, Rawat brought about many reforms such as bringing in leaner combat formations. He implemented integrated battle groups — a self-sustaining combat formation equivalent to the size of a brigade — to rapidly mobilize operations. <br /><br />Rawat along with former Defence Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword>, introduced a Special Human Rights Cell and a special vigilance cell. This was after reports of human rights violations by the Indian army started doing the rounds in Kashmir valley and parts of Northeast.In his 38 years of service, he has been rewarded with many commendations along with the Army Commander’s Commendation.<br /><br />He had also pursued M. Phil in Defence Studies from Madras University- and received his Ph. D in military media strategic studies from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut. Meet Gen. Bipin Rawat, the newest and the first Chief of Defence staff in India

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>On April 25, 2015, the Earth moved violently in Nepal. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake killed more than 8,000 people, injured at least 19,000, and displaced hundreds of thousands in cities and villages near the Himalayas.</p><p>The quake <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=85816">destroyed infrastructure</a> and homes, both modern and historic, while triggering landslides on <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=85710">Mount Everest,</a> near the village of <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=85812">Langtang,</a> and in several other locations around Kathmandu.</p><p>The Gorkha earthquake has been called the worst natural disaster in Nepal since a magnitude 8.0 earthquake in 1934.</p><p>The Gorkha earthquake changed the shape of the Earth-literally-by raising up and dropping landscapes by several meters. Along a 90 by 30 kilometer (55 by 20 mile) swath of land in Nepal, a fault along the edges of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates <a href="http://aria.jpl.nasa.gov/node/43">slipped as much as 6 meters (20 feet).</a></p><p>The release of stress in Earth's crust had devastating effects felt in Nepal, India, China, and Bangladesh. Satellite and ground-based sensors are now revealing the extent of the jolt.</p><p>In the days before and after the event, the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) instrument on the European Space Agency's Sentinel-1A satellite acquired observations of the displacement of land in Nepal and surrounding regions.</p><p>On each pass, Sentinel-1 measured the distance between itself and the ground, at a slight angle. Scientists at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, or DLR) assembled those new SAR measurements and compared them to previous radar passes over the same area. The results are shown in the land displacement map below.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The DLR team derived their data by measuring the changes in the amplitude of radar waves reflected off of the landscape before and after the earthquake. In areas shaded in red, Sentinel-1 detected movement toward the satellite (in the line-of-sight direction) of as much as 1.4 meters (4.6 feet). Shades of blue depict movement away from the satellite. Areas in yellow showed little change.</p><p>Because the satellite was looking at Nepal from an angle, that land movement technically could have been vertical or horizontal. But measurements using the Global Positioning System (GPS) and other sensors have confirmed that nearly all of the ground movement was up or down, meaning the land surface was uplifted or subsided.</p><p>Scientists affiliated with the Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis project (ARIA)-a collaboration between NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology-also contributed to studies of the Gorkha quake.</p><p>The team used both GPS measurements and SAR data from the ALOS-2 satellite (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) to create their own <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/jpl/radar-shows-kathmandu-area-uplifted-5-feet-by-gorkha-nepal-earthquake">maps of ground displacement</a>. The ARIA team also worked on experimental <a href="http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA13911">"damage proxy maps,</a>" which use SAR and other satellite measurements to broadly assess where structures have been damaged.</p><p>Two weeks after the Gorkha event, a major aftershock shook up the Himalayan region along the same fault. A 7.3 magnitude earthquake on May 12, 2015, struck to the east of the Gorkha epicenter and killed at least 68 more people.
