The change is designed to handle conversation search queries, such as "How do I tie a bow tie?" as well as it handles keyword search queries, such as "White House history." It affects 90% of search results.
The company officially unveiled it to the <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2013/09/26/google-overhauls-search-engine/2877491/">press yesterday in California</a>:
"It is really big," said Google search executive Amit Singhal.
In fact, Singhal said that what Google has done is the equivalent of switching out the core "engine" of Google's search system for a new one. It's perhaps the most significant change since 2001, <a href="http://searchengineland.com/google-hummingbird-172816">according to the Search Engine Land blog</a>.
But the new algorithm, nicknamed "Hummingbird," has been operative for a month now, and yet few noticed. That means it's basically a huge success. The last time Google made a slight tweak to its algorithm ("Panda"), in order to weed out spam and scraper sites, many mainstream web publishers screamed in protest as the search traffic they were used to receiving began plunging.
The fact that few have been screaming tells you that the new algo is doing exactly what Google wanted it to do: Work seamlessly.

One last thing: At least initially, Hummingbird feels a bit like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebooks-graph-search-likes-and-advertisers-2013-1">Facebook's Graph Search</a>, which is designed to handle more abstract or "latent" search queries such as "What movies do my friends like most?," where users do not necessarily know what they are looking for.

Google Changed Its Search Algorithm, Affecting 90% Of Search Results&#160;-&#160;And No One Noticed

Now it is only worth about a quarter of that, and its founder and original chief innovation officer are<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/demand-media-rosenblatt-is-out-2013-10"> no longer with the company</a>.
As <a href="http://variety.com/2013/biz/news/epic-fail-the-rise-and-fall-of-demand-media-1200914646/">Variety reports</a>, it turns out that <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> was a key player in the company's downfall.
<keyword id="258118" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Richard-Rosenblatt">Richard Rosenblatt</keyword> co-founded Demand in 2006 as a "<a href="http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-11-08/demand-media-losing-its-demand">content farm</a>" that would take advantage of search engine optimization. The how-to site eHow would provide easy-to-produce content for targeted ads, and the domain registration site eNom would crank out sites with generic names to serve as homes to only ads.
This collection of 1 million spammy sites was incredibly successful, making $100,000 per day.
Demand eventually expanded its less-profitable content production side by paying contributors around 20 bucks for every post or video they produced.
A quick look at <a href="http://www.ehow.com/how_8675501_pour-finish-cement.html">eHow.com</a> shows that even today, many posts are often quite vague, and on pages cluttered with ads. But at the time, some speculators thought content farming was the future. Yahoo <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/07/09/yahoo-takes-a-gander-at-demand-media-to-plug-some-holes/">considered buying the firm</a> in 2008, as did AOL.
Soon after Demand went public in January 2011, things started to fall apart.
Google changed its search algorithm in February of that year to keep users from clicking on low quality, spammy pages that found their way into top results. This version of the algo was called Panda, and Google continues to update it. Its refinement scared investors, which included Goldman Sachs.
According to Google, <a href="http://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/google-algorithm-updates-2013-list">low-quality sites</a> have "numerous paid links, are mostly empty, contain thin content, and have too many ads." That's basically the definition of a Demand-type content farm. 
Later in 2011, Google hit Demand again when it gave up on a $100 million effort to promote TV-style content channels on YouTube, of which Demand owned three.
Demand's network, which includes <a href="http://www.livestrong.com/">LiveStrong.com</a> (separate from Lance Armstrong's organization following last year's scandal) and <a href="http://www.cracked.com/">Cracked.com</a>, got 52.1 million uniques in October, down 35 percent. A full 46.1 million hits came from eHow.
In its third quarter earnings report from November, Demand <a href="http://ir.demandmedia.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=215358&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=1874072&amp;highlight=">continued to blame</a> "declines in search referral traffic and <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> demand," for its losses.
Revenue at its domain registration business, however, was up 11 percent from last year. Demand plans to spin it off, <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-11-08/demand-media-losing-its-demand">reports Bloomberg</a>.
Saul Hansell, who used to run AOL's former content farm Seed.com, <a href="http://variety.com/2013/biz/news/epic-fail-the-rise-and-fall-of-demand-media-1200914646/">told Variety</a> that Demand's dramatic fall over seven years wasn't just Google's fault.
"Using cheap freelancers who don't have the expertise doesn't work. The cumulative effect was that millions of people went to eHow and other sites, and realized they didn't have the answer to their questions."

How Google Decimated A $2 Billion Search Business

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image">Reuters</div></div></div>Google recently denied, vehemently, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-adsense-leak-fake-conspiracy-theory-2014-5#ixzz31dKpfs8M">a gossipy conspiracy theory that suggested the search engine was stealing money</a> from web publishers to fatten its own profit margins. The theory is fake - we'll explain why below - but three sources who have done business with Google's AdSense advertising program for years told Business Insider they sympathize with the theory even if they don't believe it.
The theory contains one giant flaw that spoils it. But it also references a few events that did actually happen at Google. That's why the "Google AdSense Leak" (as it came to be known) electrified Google's search marketing partners earlier this month - and why a few of them regard the theory as a fancifully embroidered version of a more mundane truth. They don't believe the theory is real, but they can see why some people might believe it.
That's a problem for Google: Many of its own customers are so frustrated with the way Google sometimes deals with them that they're willing to sympathize with the devil. Even <a href="http://adsense.blogspot.com/2012/12/working-better-together-protecting.html">Google has admitted in an official blog post that the actions it takes against publishers it doesn't like can be "scary":</a>
... we've also heard the stories: publishers finding their accounts suspended or even disabled for "invalid activity" without a clear understanding of why or how to fix it. We know this can be an intensely frustrating, even scary experience.
The conspiracy theory.
Here's the background on the conspiracy theory: An <a href="http://pastebin.com/qh6Tta3h">alleged former Google employee</a> claimed anonymously <a href="http://pastebin.com/DXTu8Mcm">in two separate posts</a> on the Pastebin site that the company systematically banned hundreds of Web publishers from its AdSense advertising system simply because they were making too much money. Any publisher that made $5,000 or more per month by running Google ads on its website was banned from the system right before its monthly check was paid, and the earnings were reversed back to Google, the leaker claims. This supposedly occurred several times through 2012. Ultimately, larger corporate publishers were left alone but small or one-person publishers got hurt the most, the theory says.
Google offered a speedy denial:
This description of our AdSense policy enforcement process is a complete fiction. The ... programs the author describes don't exist. Our teams and automated systems work around the clock to stop bad actors and protect our publishers, advertisers and users.
Business Insider contacted three sources who have done business with Google in the past to get their opinions. We were expecting them to brush off the story like lint from a suit collar. To our surprise, they all said that while they did not believe the "leaker" was genuine, some of the story felt familiar. The sources were an search ad agency CEO, a search marketing consultant, and a successful web publisher who had been banned from Google's AdSense program but did not know why.
All three sources noted the same issue with the conspiracy theory: In 2012, Google did begin shutting down a huge number of websites and refusing to pay them for the ads they ran. You can see examples of publishers <a href="http://www.nichepursuits.com/i-just-got-banned-from-google-adsense-now-what/">complaining about being banned from AdSense here</a>, <a href="http://hubpages.com/forum/topic/85195">here</a> and <a href="https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/adsense/kS3rVegcV-0">here</a>.
Google did in fact begin a big program of banning sites from using AdSense in 2012, an act that likely reduces its revenue and would do little to increase margins. The company <a href="http://adwords.blogspot.com/2012/09/taking-extra-precautions-to-keep-ads.html">wrote a blog post</a> about it here. It did so to combat <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Click_fraud">click fraud</a> (when computer programs pretend to be people clicking on ads) and to weed out bad actors who were engaging in click fraud or otherwise unfairly gaming the system - for instance, by buying low quality traffic rather than earning readers organically.
One web publisher who got caught up in the purge told BI this:
We had a website running with Google "Adsense for Domains" that was doing really well in 2011/12. Nobody here did anything to try to drive the clicks up, and yet Google did exactly what the writer says - they threw us out of the program right before a decent payout was supposed to be made in April of 2012. That matches his [the leaker's] story precisely - here's a screen shot of the lovely email they sent us:

The search ad agency chief agreed:
This is absolutely true. … they were banning AdSense partners to raise the quality of the network. … they were taking a short term hit to partner ad revenues from the display network in order to ensure the long term quality of the display ad network. 
Google has over 2 million publishers in their display [network] and so they don't manually investigate every one - rather, they lean on computer algorithms and automation. It's the same in AdWords where you have millions of advertisers, and Google needs to shut down accounts that are abusing the system (eg: selling illegal products, or whatever) so they have these algos that shut down suspicious accounts, but they're not 100% accurate. For example, my own AdWords account even got shut down once due to some weird glitch (even though we're a Google Partner) and it also happens periodically to our various advertiser clients, even though they're not violating any AdWords terms of services. It can be difficult to get a wrongly banned account to be re-instated.
The crucial point here is that the purge of sites from AdSense happened because Google was trying to clean out bad actors and increase the quality of web sites where its search ads were running. So yes, a massive amount of websites were suddenly banned in 2012 just as the conspiracy theory alleges - but the purge was intended to improve the quality of Google's offerings, not because Google needed the money. (As we've noted before, Google does not need money - it's currently adding revenue at a rate of 19% per quarter.)
Google wrote <a href="http://adsense.blogspot.com/2011/11/top-5-things-you-should-know-about.html">blog posts about this program here</a> and <a href="http://adsense.blogspot.com/2012/12/working-better-together-protecting.html">here</a>.
One of the problems with the program, however, is that Google cannot explain to publishers why it believes a site has low quality or fake traffic without revealing how it detects click fraud. If it revealed how it detects fraud the fraudsters would change their tactics to compensate. So the bans feel mysterious to those who are affected by them. Publishers are often baffled because they may not know that their site is being used as a source or pivot point for fake clicks. In 2013, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-avg-and-yahoo-2013-4">Google conducted a further purge of ad clients</a>, mostly to get rid of abusive "search toolbar" products. These are free software downloads that come bundled with a search toolbar. The software is often useless, and the toolbar shows users ads - the revenue was being split with Google until Google realized that the user experience was awful. <a href="http://adwords.blogspot.ca/2013/04/a-healthy-advertising-ecosystem.html">Google published another official blog post about this here</a>.
Finally, Google does indeed have two tiers of publishers, as the leaker claims. Bigger advertisers get Google ad sales staff to manage their accounts. Smaller publishers just get the AdSense interface. Google has been doing this a long time, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20040607183846/http://www.google.com/adsense/premium">as this old web page shows</a>. Some people believe having a "premium" or managed Google account <a href="http://labnol.blogspot.co.uk/2007/04/privilege-of-being-adsense-premium.html">lets publishers skirt the rules</a>.
Of course, Google's enemies are loving all of this speculation. Microsoft, TripAdvisor, Expedia, and Oracle are among the companies that believe Google discriminates in favor of its own search results and against their offerings. They have funded FairSearch, an organization devoted to needling Google over its practices. <a href="http://www.fairsearch.org/general/is-google-stealing-from-adsense-publishers/">In a blog, post the group said</a>:
These recent allegations are another sign that Google's thirst for profits comes at the expense of meeting its legal obligations and commitments to business partners it says benefit from its own dominance. In the past few years, the company settled for <a href="http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/2011/August/11-dag-1078.html">$500 million with the Department of Justice</a> for assisting in the illegal sale of prescription drugs online, and several <a href="http://www.fairsearch.org/general/ags-have-more-questions-for-google/">state Attorneys General have voiced concern</a> over Google's revenue from ads placed with YouTube videos that depict or promote illegal and other activities harmful to consumers and even children.
The search consultant told us that he would actually welcome some sort of legal inquiry into the theory:
In order for the truth to come out a formal inquiry by an independent body SHOULD be held, and Google should produce clear reasons for shutting down accounts and prove that the money that they held was rebated to advertisers not kept / retained.
This is all gossip, of course. But it's important gossip, because Google cares deeply about its corporate reputation. Here's the only thing we know for sure right now. Everyone agrees the theory is fake and the leaker is not a real Google employee - he or she got key details wrong, apparently. The smart money says this is a website publisher who got banned and is now wreaking revenge. But the leak got enough right to get a conversation going.
Here's why the theory is wrong.
More importantly, the theory must be wrong because by definition, the more publishers and fake clicks that get axed from the system, the fewer ads Google serves, and the fewer paid clicks it generates. Its revenues would decline in the process. And as Google takes a fixed cut of AdSense revenues, it wouldn't affect the profit margin percentage anyway.

These methods, which incorporate artificial-intelligence technologies, are so pervasive that they've become part of the market's overall structure. Take the February 2018 market sell-off, for example, when the <a href="http://markets.businessinsider.com/index/dow_jones">Dow Jones Industrial Average</a> lost the most points ever in a single day. The magnitude of the move was swiftly blamed on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wall-streeters-recount-how-the-biggest-dow-jones-drop-of-all-time-went-down-2018-2">automated trading strategies</a> like volatility targeting, which is programmed to decrease a fund's allocation to stocks as the market becomes more unstable.That's just one example of how these strategies can <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-important-charts-that-explain-markets-investing-finance-2019-2#marko-kolanovic-stock-market-liquidity-and-volatility-have-an-increasingly-dangerous-relationship-2">worsen</a> the magnitude of market disruptions. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/marko-kolanovic">Marko Kolanovic</a>, JPMorgan's global head of quant and derivatives research, has found an inverse relationship between volatility and the ease of trading - or liquidity. When machines are programmed to sell because there's plenty of selling already going on, it creates a negative feedback loop like the one that occurred last February. But the increasing role of these strategies in investing is not all negative. After all, they strip out some of the emotional impulses that leads to wild price swings in single stocks. And they actually add some stability to the market on a day-to-day basis, according to Kolanovic.<h2>What has and hasn't changed about investing</h2>When dissecting the impact of AI on their industry, it's important that investors do not lose track of how things worked long before complex technologies were involved. That's because the fundamental process of investing has not changed over time, according to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/people-transforming-investing-2019-3">Barry Hurewitz</a>, the global head of <a href="https://about-neo.ubs.com/content/evidence-lab">UBS Evidence Lab</a>, a major provider of big data sets. Investing remains an information-processing business that requires studying competing points of view - from analysts, investors, and companies - and drawing educated conclusions."The core job of what it takes to make investing decisions hasn't changed," Hurewitz told Business Insider. He added, "What is changing is the amount of data that needs to be processed and the availability of data."As data and the AI technology designed to process it have boomed, so has Wall Street's interest. One downside of this, Hurewitz said, is that some investors are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ubs-executive-explains-fundamental-investors-flaw-2019-6">borrowing strategies</a> from successful quant firms without applying the technologies in an appropriate manner. Another danger, he added, is that trendy <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ubs-executive-explains-fundamental-investors-flaw-2019-6">buzzwords are distracting investors</a> from tried and tested strategies.Ultimately, it's not enough to only have data at your fingertips. How you leverage AI to generate alpha, or outperformance compared to a benchmark, is more important than just having access to information, said Ruggero Gramatica, the founder and CEO of Yewno, a provider of data sets aggregated with AI technologies like machine learning.Gramatica's firm is one of several using AI to disrupt the traditional stock-picking process.He also flagged the boom of so-called robo advisors and investing products that allow people to automate the investing process. This disruptive trend will continue to drive the cost of investing down, he said. While it's a challenge for traditional stock pickers, it creates an opportunity for firms spearheading the new technologies.<h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Henry Nicholls/Reuters</div></div></div>Three big opportunities for AI in investing</h2><h3>Stock picking: Growing</h3>The traditional stock-picking process - of poring over financial statements, meeting with management teams, and consciously making buy/sell decisions - is being disrupted by automated stock pickers. There are many examples of 'Ai-ception': creating an exchange-traded fund of companies in the AI industry and picking its constituents solely with AI.<h3>Investment advice: Growing</h3>The boom of so-called robo advisors and investing products that allow people to buy specific baskets of stocks is going to continue to drive the cost of investing down, according to Gramatica. That's a challenge for traditional fund managers, but an opportunity for those at the forefront of new technologies. <h3>High-speed trading: Growing</h3>The breed of investor that conducts high volumes of trades in mere milliseconds has been expanding rapidly in recent years - and AI-driven machine learning is a big part of that. Those tools allow computers to sift through more data than humanly possible. The main catch is that the output is only as good as the data the machines are being fed.<h2>AI in the real world: Picking stocks without stock pickers</h2>Gramatica's firm <a href="https://www.yewno.com/">Yewno</a> has co-created a handful of AI-linked indexes - including two with the Nasdaq - that track global companies in the industry, as well as the Stoxx Global AI Index. It also leveraged AI to create three <a href="http://www.nasdaqtrader.com/TraderNews.aspx?id=fpnews2018-24">cannabis indexes</a> for Nasdaq.What better way to populate an ETF of AI companies than through the technology itself? Yewno used a knowledge graph to aggregate reams of data sets on the AI industry, identify the most important trends, and link these to the companies spearheading them. The returns of the indexes show that investors' enthusiasm on AI is strong. Both the Stoxx Global AI Index and the Nasdaq Yewno Global AI and Big Data Index gained 19% this year through July 11, versus a 20% gain for the S&amp;P 500 and 25% for the Nasdaq Composite. According to Gramatica, the application of knowledge graphs in investing - built to gather scattered data and refine it for specific queries (in this case, the best AI companies) - is the industry's biggest opportunity."The adoption of full-fledged knowledge graphs that are fed openly with the right amount of data and diversity of data is something that is really at the beginning," he said. "I can see that in the next five years, it will be a must-have for everyone."It's the same technology <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/googl-stock">Google</a> uses to enhance its search results. Basically, Google's knowledge graph gathers and processes reams of information on the internet to present the most relevant answers to search queries. "There really is too much information that is interconnected somehow," Grammatica said. "You might have an impact on your portfolio from something that is happening now in Iceland, and you won't even know. Either you have an army of analysts that keeps track of anything at any point in time, hoping to find all the connections and develop intuition, or you're always behind. <li>On Google+, the value of a share is slightly more than $5 (more than any other social network). This is likely because content shared on Google+ also ranks high in Google search results, which increases the likelihood that someone with intent to buy will see that content. </li>
<li>Facebook shares ranked second, with a value of $3.58, followed by a Facebook Like, which is worth about $1.41. </li>
<li>When someone shares a merchant's content on Pinterest or Twitter, that's worth about $0.87 and $0.85, respectively. </li>
<li>Email is still the most valuable channel to retailers. When a consumer emails a product (sometimes accompanied with an offer) to someone they know, that's worth slightly more than $12. </li>

To calculate this data, AddShoppers considered a number of variables that led to a social media-influenced sale, such as the percent of social media shares that occurs on each social network, click-through rates, conversion rates, and average order value. Each dollar amount is based on the average revenue generated by each social share on a given network. FACEBOOK ALGO CHANGE: Facebook changed its News Feed algorithm in order to show fewer text-based status updates from Pages, but more text-based status updates from friends. In a blog post announcing the change, Facebook said that simple, text-based status updates from friends perform much better than those from Pages. Last month, Facebook made a change to the News Feed algorithm that placed more weight on posts that contained more media content, such as photos, videos, and links. It seems that Facebook is ushering brands to share more rich media content on the social network with these two changes. PINTEREST REVENUE PLAN IN 2014: Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann says his goal is for the company to begin earning revenue this year. "We have [revenue] goals. TUMBLR'S USER TRAFFIC PLATEAUS: Tumblr's Web traffic plateaued in May of last year, according to various data sources. comScore reports that Tumblr's U.S. traffic has floated around 47 million unique visitors each month (although that doesn't account for a significant portion of mobile usage), while GlobalWebIndex says the number of global Internet users who are active on Tumblr has remained steady at around 4%. One theory as to why Tumblr's user growth has come to a halt is that there is more competition among Web properties that focus on visual memes (e.g. GIFs), such as Buzzfeed and Upworthy.
