Now, nearly two years later, the app has made its way to India, albeit with some changes. Google Wallet launched in India – store your loyalty cards, boarding passes and more

Payments made via Unified Payments Interface (UPI) reported a 45% yearly growth, according to data from the National Payment Corporation of <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> (<keyword id="19998946" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NPCI" source="keywords">NPCI</keyword>). The value of transactions also saw a growth of over 35%, totaling Rs 20.64 trillion. This marks the third consecutive month when total transactions exceeded Rs 20 trillion. In June 2024, the total UPI transaction value was Rs 20.07 trillion, while in May it was Rs 20.44 trillion. NPCI data also showed that the average daily transaction value through UPI in July 2024 was Rs 466 million, or about Rs 66,590 crore. Compared with June, the volume of <keyword id="19957378" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="UPI-transactions" source="keywords">UPI transactions</keyword> grew by 3.95% in July, while the value of transactions increased by 2.84%. In the first four months of the current fiscal year (2024-25), UPI recorded transactions amounting to Rs 80.79 trillion, across approximately 55.66 billion transactions. In 2023-24, total UPI transactions were 131 billion, compared to 84 billion in 2022-23. The monthly bulletin of the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="keywords">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) reported that over the last four years, UPI transactions have seen a ten-fold increase in volume, from 12.5 billion transactions in 2019-20 to 131 billion transactions in 2023-24, which accounts for 80% of the total digital payment volumes. Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions experienced substantial growth, increasing by 57% year-on-year in FY24. Within this segment, PhonePe and Google Pay dominated, holding a combined market share of 86%, according to the Boston Consulting Group's (BCG) Banking Sector Roundup for 2023-24. A shift in <keyword id="19989657" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payments" source="keywords">digital payments</keyword> was noted, with credit card transactions doubling over the past three years. In contrast, debit card transactions declined by 43% year-on-year. By making digital payment platform technology and device agnostic, UPI has contributed to <keyword id="20377974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-inclusion" source="keywords">financial inclusion</keyword> at the grassroots level. Digital payments in India are hitting fresh highs, as citizens increasingly adopt emerging modes of online transactions. One key emphasis of the Indian government has been to ensure that the benefits of UPI are not limited to India alone; other countries, too, can benefit from it. UPI is India's mobile-based fast payment system, which facilitates customers to make round-the-clock payments instantly using a Virtual Payment Address (VPA) created by the customer. The share of UPI in digital payments in India has reached close to 80% in 2023. Today, India accounts for nearly 46% of the world's digital transactions, based on 2022 data.

Google for India – Sachet loans to credit on UPI, tech giant bets on lending

The California-based search giant introduced a UPI-based payment system in India back in 2017 as ‘Tez’, which was rebranded to ‘Google Pay’ a year later. Google Pay is a key player in the digital payments space which offers enhanced fraud protections. The digital payment platform uses machine learning algorithms to prevent scams and displays an explicit warning if a user receives a payment request from a fraudster or someone who is not in the contacts list of the user. Besides this, the app uses screen lock, PIN, fingerprint, or password that you use to lock your phone. According to a <a href="https://www.pwc.in/assets/pdfs/consulting/financial-services/fintech/payments-transformation/the-indian-payments-handbook-2021-2026.pdf">PwC report</a>, Indian digital payments witnessed a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23% and it is expected to increase to 217 billion (21,700 crore) transactions by FY26. The report also states that the UPI payments will likely continue to dominate the digital payments space. On August 28, 2018, the company rebranded it to ‘Google Pay.’ UPI comes with a series of features including self-transfer, balance check, payment via QR code scanning, and more. Google pay is one of the most used payment apps in India. Also known as GPAY, it lets you make all types of online payments. Every transaction done on Google Pay is secured by a <keyword id="4760578" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi-pin" source="Orion">UPI pin</keyword>. When you make any transaction on Google Pay, you need to enter 4 digit code to allow bank transactions. This UPI pin is set when you are creating your Google Pay account. How to change UPI pin in Google Pay

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Ransomware attacks can harm companies' operations and customer confidence.</li><li>The FBI advises against paying hackers, but negotiators can help businesses assess their options.</li></ul>Cybercriminals stealing important data and holding it for ransom can be a company's worst nightmare.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ransomware-attacks-prevent-respond-jackie-singh-debbie-reynolds-2022-5">Instances of ransomware</a>, a type of malicious software that holds sensitive data hostage until a victim pays the attacker, are becoming more common. The security firm Mandiant, a Google subsidiary, said it found a 75% increase in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://cloud.google.com/blog/topics/threat-intelligence/ransomware-attacks-surge-rely-on-public-legitimate-tools">posts on data-leak sites</a> from 2022 to 2023.Some companies choose to pay cybercriminals, and others don't. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/cybersecurity/mgm-resorts-refused-to-pay-ransom-in-cyberattack-on-casinos-3a53fa6d">MGM</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pcmag.com/news/boeing-confirms-lockbit-hackers-wanted-200-million-ransom-after-2023-hack">Boeing</a> reportedly declined to pay millions of dollars that hackers sought after data breaches. The software firm <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/11/business/cdk-hack-ransom-tweny-five-million-dollars/index.html">CDK Global</a> likely paid $25 million when it was attacked, and the casino operator <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/09/14/caesars-paid-millions-in-ransom-to-cybercrime-group-prior-to-mgm-hack.html">Caesars</a> reportedly paid $15 million."The position we generally take is that if you don't need to pay ransom, you should not pay ransom," said Mark Lance, the vice president of digital forensics and incident response and threat intelligence at GuidePoint Security, which helps organizations negotiate ransomware. "We do not recommend funding a criminal organization or making a payment if it's unnecessary."But he said companies may decide to pay up for a variety of reasons. "We educate clients who are the victims on what to expect if they're impacted by ransomware and what some of the benefits might be if they did pay versus didn't pay," he said.While many ransomware attacks are preventable, they happen every day to companies of all sizes. Here's what ransomware negotiators want you to know about whether to pay hackers.<h2 id="71770eeb-d42c-4350-9eef-3a0d3a2336c8">Why some companies decide to pay</h2>Kurtis Minder, the CEO of GroupSense, which offers ransom-negotiation services, said companies must consider the "blast radius associated with the attack.""There's operational interruption," he said, "but in addition to that, they need to consider things like brand impact, the PR impact, and the customer-confidence concerns," including the release of sensitive data.IBM has estimated that data breaches will <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ibm.com/reports/data-breach">cost an average of $4.9 million</a> in 2024, 10% more than last year.Minder said some companies face going out of business if they don't pay the ransom. When their systems are down and they don't have backups, they're often unable to continue business operations.Lance gave an example of a hospital his company worked with that found that paying a ransom to get important files back would cost it about one-seventh of what it would spend to access backups of the files.He said organizations might also pay when cybercriminals take sensitive or proprietary information, such as personally identifiable information, and threaten to release it.<h2 id="fbfa70fb-8ec2-4478-8bc4-fdea77f2984f">Both paying and not paying can be risky</h2>Lance said that whether to pay ransom is ultimately up to individual companies.The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you/scams-and-safety/common-frauds-and-scams/ransomware">FBI warns</a> against paying ransom to attackers, as there's no guarantee you'll get your data back. The agency also argues that paying incentivizes hackers to target more victims.Minder and Lance say many cybercriminal organizations are sophisticated and have their own reputations to uphold — so they usually do what they say and provide instructions for decrypting the stolen information once they receive payment."It's always a risk paying a threat actor because you're dealing with somebody who just stole information from your environment and is basically holding your data hostage," Lance said. "There are motivations for them to make sure that you do get access back to your systems and are able to recover."Still, Minder said, you can't know for sure. But if you don't pay, your data will most likely stay encrypted, sensitive information may be released, and you may be at risk of getting attacked again.Minder added that while companies are encouraged to report ransomware attacks to law enforcement, not all of them do.There's no federal law that prohibits paying cybercriminals. But the government prohibits financial transactions, including ransom, with certain entities designated as foreign terrorist organizations. Some states, including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.floridabar.org/the-florida-bar-news/florida-prohibits-state-agencies-from-paying-cyber-ransoms/">Florida</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.govtech.com/security/experts-remain-divided-on-n-c-ransomware-payment-ban">North Carolina</a>, have laws banning government entities from paying cyberattackers.The US Securities and Exchange Commission requires public companies to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-companies-can-respond-to-cybersecurity-risks-after-layoffs-2024-9">disclose details about cybersecurity incidents</a> that are "material," meaning likely to affect their operations, reputation, or finances.<h2 id="1dff5843-5cbd-4edf-a683-4c14bf20df27">Seeking help is crucial</h2>Lance said that if you encounter ransomware, "don't try to go at it alone without any experience."He added that hiring a negotiator or talking with others in the same industry who've experienced an attack can help companies avoid pitfalls, which can include not having a response plan, waiting too long to respond, and not communicating effectively with cybercriminals.Negotiators have experience interacting with dozens of cybercriminal groups; Lance said that knowledge of these organizations' backgrounds and histories is useful during negotiations.Minder said that working with negotiators could help companies assess their risk and decide whether to pay. Negotiators can also help navigate the logistics of paying and getting a company's systems back up and running and can work with law enforcement and insurance companies.Lance said the negotiation process involves setting expectations when a company decides to pay ransom — this includes ensuring the company can decrypt stolen files and data, demanding proof that data was deleted, and obtaining details about how the cybercriminals accessed the company's system."We want to educate people that ransomware is a real and relevant threat" that most likely isn't going away, Lance said. But he added that there are "basic things that you can do to protect yourself from being a victim."

We will appeal and ask the courts to pause implementing the remedies to maintain a consistent and safe experience for users and developers as the legal process moves forward," the company said."We will keep advocating for what is best for developers, device manufacturers, and the billions of Android users around the world."Representatives for Epic Games did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, made outside normal working hours.The ruling is Google's latest setback. Last year, a jury found Google had violated antitrust policies in its Play Store for Android systems. New Delhi, In a fresh bid to secure <keyword id="2750705" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-Pay">Google Pay</keyword> users in India, the company on Thursday announced more choice and control to manage transaction data on the digital payments platform. The users can now view and delete individual transactions and activity records that they don't want used to personalise their <keyword id="6355629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> Pay experience, by visiting account.google.com. From next week, Google Pay <keyword id="235499" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="APP">app</keyword> settings will provide users with more controls to decide how their Pay activity is used to personalise features within the app. "All users will be asked to choose whether they would like to turn the control on or off as soon as they upgrade to the next version of the Google Pay app," Ambarish Kenghe, Vice President-Product, Google Pay, said in a statement. Turning on "Personalisation within Google Pay'' will provide a more tailored experience within Google Pay. For example, the users receive more relevant offers and rewards based on their activity within Google Pay, including transaction history. "Even with this setting turned off, Google Pay will continue to work just as well -- only without personalization," Kenghe said. The users who update Google Pay on Android and iOS can access these controls to modify their personalisation experience on Google Pay based on their preference. "Your personal information is never sold to anyone and your transaction history is not shared with any other Google product for targeting ads," the company said.

It is focused on enhanced security and privacy by replacing actual cards with virtual one that will protect the users from fraudulent websites. Additionally, just like the auto-fill form, the checkout form will be automatically filled, saving the hassle to input card details. Google Pay is currently available in more than 40 countries and soon we hope Indian users will use these upcoming features.
