Even though the change is only visible on iPhones operating in Russia, it sets a dangerous precedent for other disputed territories around the world. Apple, in its own way, legitimised the claim of the Russian government. “After all, maps are not neutral, irrespective of the purpose for which they are used. The very act of referring to a country’s map is often a political statement,” according to a <a href="https://www.orfonline.org/expert-speak/drawing-lines-internet-border-conflicts-politics-behind-digital-maps-51693/">report</a> by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF). <a href="http://metrocosm.com/disputed-territories-map.html">Metrocosm</a>’s map of the disputed territories around the world shows that nearly three-quarters of all countries are engaged in at least one dispute over its national borders — and Apple’s not the only one trying to find political balance. Google Maps does the same thing China and India have been at odds for years over the eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, south of the McMahon Line. And, Google didn’t want to make either country angry. When Google Maps is accessed from India it shows the state as a part of Indian territory. But, when it’s accessed from the <a href="http://www.google.cn/">Chinese Google</a>, it shows that Arunachal Pradesh as a part of Chinese territory, according to data by the ORF. This decision was made back in 2009 following outrage over the previous version of the map during former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh during the state elections. Tibet, a nation that India supports for its independence but China lays claim to, is also warped on Google Maps. When navigating to the Ngari prefecture from Demchok in Leh — in India — there is no alert aside from one, which informs the user that they may be entering a different time zone. Mapping the same destination from China puts Demchok in Chinese territory and shows no route at all. This is despite the fact that Demchok was the location of a stand-off between the Chinese and India military forces in 2018. It’s not just about India. Apple had to bow to Russia just like Google had to bow to India and China

Twitter CEO is facing fire from India after a map showed Jammu and Kashmir as part of China

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Sundar+Pichai+">Sundar Pichai</a> is a happy man and says, Thanks! The IIT Kharagpur alumnus, who became the third chief executive officer of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Google">Google</a>, has expressed gratitude over the deluge of wishes extended to him after his elevation in the company. 
 
India-born Pichai, 43, tweeted: "Its been overwhelming to see such generous and warm responses from many dear friends, colleagues and strangers - heartfelt thanks." 
 Pichai is only the third chief executive of the technology giant after Google’s executive chairman <keyword id="51897" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Eric-Schmidt">Eric Schmidt</keyword> and cofounder <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Larry+Page">Larry Page</a>. 
 
Schmidt became the company CEO in August 2001 and remained in the role till January 2011 when Page took over as the CEO. 
 
Prime Minister <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Narendra+Modi+">Narendra Modi</a>, Apple CEO <keyword id="191843" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tim-Cook">Tim Cook</keyword> and <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> CEO <keyword id="276564" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Satya-Nadella">Satya Nadella</keyword> were among the scores of dignitaries who congratulated him on the micro-blogging site when he was named to be the next CEO.

Pichai got his B.Tech from the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IIT+Kharagpur+alumnus">Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur</a> and holds an MS in Engineering and Materials Science from <keyword id="101399" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Stanford-University">Stanford University</keyword> and an MBA from the <keyword id="6442384" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wharton-School">Wharton School</keyword>. 
 
In 2004, he joined Google as its vice president of product management, where he led the team working on Google's Chrome browser and operating system. His alma mater Wharton had also tweeted on his promotion.

Heartfelt thanks! Tweets Sundar Pichai over overwhelming response

The <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword> has decided to be strict against the depiction of a wrong map of India, which includes showing Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (<keyword id="44062" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="PoK">PoK</keyword>) or <keyword id="6367693" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arunachal">Arunachal</keyword> Pradesh as disputed lands or not as parts of India. Such maps, on any online platform or physical documents, would invite a stiff jail term of seven years along with a heavy fine of up to Rs One Crore. 
 
To add to this, the Geospatial Information Regulation Bill would soon be brought to tables, and any person or institution acquiring and disseminating any geospatial imagery or data of any part of India through space or aerial platforms will be required to first seek permission and license from a government authority. 
 
For online platforms like Google, this could mean an extra effort of applying for a license so that they could run Google Maps or Google Earth in India. These imageries would be screened for "sensitivity checks" so that India's security and sovereignty can be protected. 
 
However, the act will not be applicable on Indian government bodies.

Showing PoK and Arunachal as disputed territories will land you in jail for 7 years

After the proposed Geospatial bill raised many eyebrows, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=kiren+rijiju&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju</a> said it will not hurt tech companies. 
 
However, he cautioned companies such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=google&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Google</a>, saying they will have to make sure to show Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir correctly on India’s map.

Rijiju told ET the proposed Geospatial Information Regulation Bill will punish those who violate depicting Indian maps as well as mapping so-called security sensitive areas.

 The minister told ET that tech industry's concerns would be addressed, which has argued that such a bill would impact <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>, <keyword id="6354427" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple">Apple</keyword>, Uber, Ola, Zomato and an array of startups. 
 
"The law should not have any kind of negative impact or creating a negative atmosphere for business growth... definitely all concerns of the industry will be addressed in the final law. I am assuring that the intention of the government is to facilitate business... It is not to create a hurdle,” he said. 
 
Also, Rijiju said India would like Google to depict boundary in a correct manner. 
 
“That is our sovereign concern that we will always put that across. They (Google) have their own way of thinking. They have not shown Arunachal as part of China but they show it in red colour as disputed. That is not acceptable to us at all,” he told ET.

Maps law will punish those who depict Indian map incorrectly, says Rijiju

Due to MNCs like Google and Apple giving a cold response to India's security concerns, they might soon need a license for <keyword id="3354536" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="satellite-mapping-in-India">satellite mapping in India</keyword>, says a proposed legislation. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/PoK-and-Arunachal-as-disputed-territories/articleshow/52129850.cms">As reported last week</a>, a draft of <keyword id="3354538" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Geospatial-Information-Regulation-Bill">Geospatial Information Regulation Bill</keyword> was released last week, saying that anyone mapping India by a satellite or aerial platform will be needing a licence from a government "security vetting authority". 
 This move is being criticised as "return of the <keyword id="736863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="licence-raj">Licence Raj</keyword>" and "digital nationalism". However, Kiren Rijiju, MoS for Home, has reacted to the criticism saying, "India as a responsible power must have established guidelines. We won't create hurdles for business and technological development, but national security considerations must not be compromised either." 
 
Non-compliance to the above regulation could land you in jail for seven years, while inviting a fine of up to Rs 100 crore. 
 
One person who seems to have particularly campaigned for such law is BJP MP Tarun Vijay, who has asked "patriotic Indians" to use the country's own <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/ISRO-is-hoping-its-big-offering-would-gain-popularity-in-the-market/articleshow/48187137.cms">'Bhuvan'</a> software application for maps. 
 
"Why do we need Google? We should stop becoming Google's instruments," he told ET. "The patriotic government of Narendra Modi has taken a right step in a big relief to the security establishment. UPA did not take any action despite my pleas to the then Defence Minister AK Antony. I congratulate the Modi government for showing spine in face of arrogance of these IT giants," he said, adding: Google has been "behaving as if it were above Indian law".

A top government official aware of the matter told ET that maps of India's sensitive installations were available on Google Maps, which significantly increases the security risk of those sites. "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/26/11-Mumbai-attacks-mastermind-Hafiz-Saeed-lauds-Pathankot-attacks-warns-India-of-more/articleshow/50852967.cms">Pathankot air base</a>, which was recently attacked, can be seen on Google Maps. Terrorists plot strikes on sensitive targets studying Google Maps," he said. 
 
If the legislation is passed, companies like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Google-to-set-up-a-new-campus-in-India-Sundar-Pichai/articleshow/50203683.cms">Google</a>, Microsoft and Apple, would be severely and directly hit as they have millions of Indians using their maps. Moreover, several firms like Ola, Uber and Zomato depend on these maps to provide their services, and they too won’t be spared from the results. 
 
Mishi Choudhary, legal director at Software Freedom Law Centre, told ET that since almost all online businesses today depend on geo-location for their services, all of them will be forced to seek a licence under the proposed law, which is a threat to digital India. 
 
"This kind of digital nationalism is a way to create a government-controlled monopoly on all geographical information about the country, conveniently transforming Digital India to Licence India, digitally this time," she said. 
 
However, a senior government official has added that companies should not have a problem to come under regulations on security considerations, given that the bill is seeking public comments and if they don’t like it, they can lodge their apprehensions. "We are not banning anyone from mapping India - only that the mapping has to be in line with Indian security considerations regarding sensitive installations and correct boundaries being depicted like not showing PoK and Arunachal Pradesh as out of India," this official said. 
 
Meanwhile, a group of techies have created a website called savethemap.in, aiming to educate people about the matter and send out their responses.

The aim is to streamline the Indian payment app with its international counterpart, without losing out on the localisition. The company is expanding its reach through multiple programs targeted to attract more merchants onto the platform. First off, it’s partnering with large stores across India to tap into their large base of consumers. They’re also building something called the ‘merchant experience’ so that businesses can find more customers through Google Maps and customised notifications. The ‘merchant experience’ is already being tested in Delhi and Bangalore. In addition, it’s introducing new integrations to make the app more user friendly. One of those integrations is users being able to make payments with Google Pay without having to leave the merchant’s app. In partnership with Indian banks like HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, Google is also looking to go beyond basic payments. Despite that, the use of the Google Assistant has tripled in the last year alone. Google, in turn, has introduced three new actions for the user. The ‘Where is My Train’ action to tracks trains across the country, the ‘Airtel’ action which allows subscribers to pull information about their account details using voice commands and the ‘Hello English’ to help users learn English via online lessons. Eating through India: 26 culinary gems from each of India's states

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has inadvertently <a href="http://qz.com/336299/xiaomi-just-wandered-into-a-100-year-old-border-dispute-between-china-and-india/">reignited a century-old geopolitical dispute between India and China, Quartz reports</a>.
<a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-30629883">Officially the most valuable startup in the world</a>, the company is growing at a rapid rate by selling high-quality, low-cost smartphones and other devices. (It's been described as the "Apple of China," and has also <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jony-ive-calls-design-copies-theft-2014-10">been accused of stealing Apple's designs</a>.) The growing market in India is key to Xiaomi's ambitions - <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-29786324">according to a BBC report</a>, it hopes to sell as many as 100,000 handsets in the company every week.
But at a new product launch in Delhi, Xiaomi has managed to ignite the fury of its fans back home. As Xiaomi exec Hugo Barra spoke, behind him appeared a map of India that appeared to include a disputed border region that China claims as its own.
The photo was posted on Chinese social network Weibo by Barra and subsequently deleted - but not before it was saved. Here it is:

On the left, Aksai Chin in Kashmir is administered by China, but India lays a claim to it. On the right, Arunachal Pradesh is claimed by China - although Quartz reports it is "completely administered by India, and its population have been Indian citizens for decades." Disputes over the border between China and India go back as far as the nineteenth century.
It's not clear why Xiaomi included them in its map - it didn't respond to Quartz's requests for comment. But it's entirely possible that it was simply an inadvertent mistake rather than a calculated geopolitical slight. And if Xiaomi had used the accepted Chinese borders, it'd have risked offending the Indian customers it's keen to attract.
But that hasn't stopped dozens of critics piling onto Xiaomi for the map. "Xiaomi wants to sell out its country to make larger sales," said one user on Weibo, while another accused the company of "unexpectedly forgetting its roots."
It's not often that Xiaomi upsets its customers. The company has grown so fast because of <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/xiaomis-secret-weapon-its-fans-2015-1">its extraordinarily loyal fanbase</a>. It avoids almost all traditional marketing in favour of social media outreach and special events for the community, and the loyalty of its supporters is often compared to Apple "fanboys."
The Xiaomi incident also shows the kind of problems that face technology companies hoping to expand in emerging markets across the world. Google Maps has also had to deal with the problem of disputed territories - <a href="http://gizmodo.com/google-maps-stays-neutral-by-only-showing-your-side-in-1556992711">its solution is to show the borders declared by whatever country the user is currently in</a>.
Xiaomi has encountered problems in India before. In 2014, <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-29786324">the Indian military was warned not to use handsets from the company</a> over security fears. In response, Xiaomi announced it was to open new data centers in India.

A vast amount of money is at stake. Of <a href="http://www.business-standard.com/article/pti-stories/m-commerce-to-contribute-up-to-70pc-of-online-shopping-experts-114113000154_1.html">India's online shoppers, 70% (or 120 million) shop on their phones</a> rather than on PCs. And most India's 1.2 billion people have yet to buy their first phone - so the growth potential there is massive. About <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/jan/13/smartphone-explosion-2014-india-us-china-firefoxos-android">225 million Indians are expected to buy smart phones in 2014</a>, according to The Guardian.
The launch is also significant because most of Samsung's phones use Google's Android operating system. Samsung is the biggest seller of Androids. Tizen, however, is the nascent competing operating system that Samsung has been developing on its own. If Samsung is successful in selling Tizen phones, it will steal market share from Android - and that would make Google very unhappy indeed.
So you can see how complicated Samsung's strategy now is: It is now competing against one of its biggest tech partners (Google) while trying to remain friends with that partner, all in the market that offers them both their biggest growth (after China).

Most analysts believe that the bulk of future growth in smartphone sales will be in the low-end of the market, as the 5 billion or so people on the planet in developing nations come online. (Interestingly, Apple has only a marginal strategy for discount consumers in the developing world, in which it briefly sells older models at a cheap price before manufacturing is discontinued with the introduction of a new, more expensive phone.)

Goods that are unpacked, unlabelled and unbranded will continue to remain exempt from GST. Besides, a 12 per cent tax on hotel rooms below Rs 1,000/day will be levied, as against a tax exemption currently. GST rate rationalisation is important to boost the weighted average GST rate that has fallen to 11.6 per cent, against 14.4 per cent at the time of launch. The GST Council also recommended a correction in the inverted duty structure for a host of items, including edible oil, coal, LED lamps, printing/drawing ink, finished leather and solar water heater. The Council is likely to discuss on Wednesday the demand for an extension of compensation paid to states for revenue lost from their taxes such as sales tax (VAT) being subsumed into a national GST, besides a 28 per cent tax on casinos, online gaming and horse racing. Non-BJP ruled states such as Chhattisgarh want the compensation regime to be extended or the share of states in the GST revenues be increased to 70-80 per cent from the current 50 per cent. And to drive their point, they cited a recent <keyword id="6354977" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="Orion">Supreme Court</keyword> ruling that decisions made by the Council are not binding on states and any decision not taken unanimously could potentially lead to unraveling of the landmark economic reform. The report of the state finance ministers on GST systems reforms, which recommended biometric authentication of high risk taxpayers and real-time validation of bank accounts too was cleared by the Council. As per data on revenue growth collated for the Council meeting, only five out of 31 states/UTs, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim, registered a revenue growth higher than the protected revenue rate for states under GST in financial year 2021-22. With regard to e-way bill on intra-state movement of gold, gold jewellery and precious stones to check evasion, the Council recommended that states can decide on the threshold above which the electronic bill is to be made mandatory. A panel of state ministers had recommended the threshold to be Rs 2 lakh and above.
