The company has now added a new disclaimer to Chrome’s incognito mode. According to a<a href="https://mspoweruser.com/google-updates-chrome-incognito-disclaimer-amid-5-billion-lawsuit-settlement/"> report</a> by MSPowerUser, Google has added a new disclaimer in its latest <keyword id="20222649" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="canary" source="keywords">Canary</keyword> build of <keyword id="182214" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-chrome" source="Orion">Google Chrome</keyword>. For those unaware, the Canary build of Chrome is an early-access version which allows users and developers to test new features and updates before they are rolled out in the stable build. Here’s the current disclaimer offered in Chrome’s incognito mode: “Now you can browse privately, and other people who use this device won’t see your activity. However, downloads, bookmarks and reading list items will be saved. Learn more” The new disclaimer in Chrome’s incognito mode in the Canary build reads: “Others who use this device won’t see your activity, so you can browse more privately. This won’t change how data is collected by websites you visit and the services they use, including Google. Downloads, bookmarks and reading list items will be saved. Learn more” While Google had earlier mentioned that your activity might still be visible to websites you visit, it had not revealed that Google continues to track users in an incognito window. It is to be noted that the change in disclaimer does not mean Google is starting to track users now. It has reportedly been doing so for a long time and has only updated its disclaimers now. Users must be cautious about how they use the incognito mode as it’s not just Google but also the websites that you visit that can track your activities. The move is also seen as Google taking this step to offer better information about Chrome’s incognito mode ahead of the lawsuit settlement being presented in the courts. The final approval for the lawsuit is expected to be given in February 2024. The company was hit by this class action lawsuit in 2020 for collecting user data in Chrome’s incognito mode. Google Incognito mode has a new disclaimer – You are being tracked

<ul><li>A bug in WebView is causing data loss for a few apps on Chrome 79.</li><li>Google has paused the rollout of the update; 50% users are already on Chrome 79.</li><li>Google acknowledged the issue and is currently working on resolving it.</li></ul>Google started rolling out the Chrome 79 update with improved <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/google-chrome-will-now-alert-you-when-your-password-has-been-stolen/articleshow/72471916.cms">password protection</a> a few days ago for mobile and desktop users. But it has paused it after a bug has surfaced -- which wipes the data in a few apps that use Android’s WebView. The issue was first spotted by <a href="https://9to5google.com/2019/12/14/android-apps-data-loss/">9to5Google</a> and has also been reported by several users who have been affected by this, on <a href="https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1033655">Chromium’s bug</a> tracker page. While Google has paused the update, the tech giant has confirmed that approximately 50% of users are already on Chrome 79. Users affected by this bug have started posting one-star reviews for the apps on the Play Store, without realizing that the app developers cannot fix it. The app developers, in turn, have been complaining to the Chromium developers. It has been found that the reason for this bug is that in Chrome 79, the location where the web data is stored was updated. However, the local storage was missed from the list of files migrated, causing data loss. A Chromium engineer responded to the complaint and assured developers that the company is working on multiple strategies to solve the issue. The engineer also said that they are currently discussing the correct strategy for resolving this issue which will be one of: a) continue the migration, moving the missed files into their new locations. b) revert the change by moving migrated files to their old locations. The engineer also promised to alert developers of the option that has been chosen. “In the meantime, it would be good to collect a list of affected packages, and details of whether any mitigations have been released to users, and in what versions so that we can test that the re-spin doesn't interact badly with the mitigation,” he said. Google Chrome 79 update rollout halted after bug wipes out app data

The main addition to password protection is that Chrome will now alert you when your password has been compromised in a data breach. The new feature was announced by Google CEO Sundar Pichai in a <a href="https://twitter.com/sundarpichai/status/1204528522171076608">tweet</a>. In addition to warning users about compromised usernames and passwords, the new update will also alert users when they visit a malicious website. How does the new password protection feature work?

 The new password protection features announced by Google are quite simple. When you type your username and password into a website, Google will alert you if it detects that the password has been compromised in a data breach on some site or app. To recall, Google had introduced a similar feature as a Password Checkup extension earlier this year and in October, the company had added this to the Password Checkup in Google Account’s security section. Google is now integrating this feature directly in its browser. This feature is currently being rolled out in phases and once you receive this update, you can control it in your browser’s settings under Sync and Google Services. Real-time phishing protection In its <a href="https://blog.google/products/chrome/better-password-protections/">blog post</a>, Google has added that it maintains a list of unsafe or malicious sites and shares this information with webmasters and other browsers to protect users from such sites. While the list is refreshed every 30 minutes, some sites still slip through by switching domains or hiding from Google’s crawlers. With its new protection features, Google will offer real-time phishing protection on desktop. This feature will be available in “Make searches and browsing better” under Chrome settings.

Google Chrome will now alert you when your password has been stolen

Thanks to a partnership between Mozilla and Yahoo, Google has seen the largest drop in its share of the search market since 2009, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2015-01-07/google-loses-most-u-s-search-share-since-2009-while-yahoo-gains.html">reports Bloomberg</a>-and thanks to rising tensions with Apple, further decline may be imminent.
Mozilla's Firefox web browser has historically come bundled with Google as its default search engine, but <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yahoo-search-will-now-be-the-default-in-firefox-2014-11">a five-year deal signed with Yahoo in November 2013</a> has seen Firefox automatically opting for the rival search engine instead. The result? Google's U.S. market share has slipped from 79.3% to 75.2%-with Yahoo up from 7.4% to 10.4%.

Firefox is used by just 12% of Americans, and as illustrated above, Google remains the undisputed search market leader. (37% of Americans use Google's Chrome browser, and another 34% use Microsoft's Internet Explorer.) Nonetheless, the news will be seen as a win for Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, who has been struggling to turn the ailing internet giant around. And as&#xa0;<a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2015/01/07/google-search-share-drops-after-firefox-switch/">the Wall Street Journal points out</a>, this may just be the start for Google.
<a href="https://www.theinformation.com/All-Eyes-on-Apple-as-Google-Search-Deal-Expires-Next-Year/">There are reports that Apple is considering dropping Google </a>as its default search engine on the iPhone's Safari web browser. It's not clear what Apple might replace the search giant with-but whether it's Yahoo, Bing, or an in-house search, it'd be a big loss for Google. <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2015/01/07/google-search-share-drops-after-firefox-switch/">The Wall Street Journal reports</a> that in December, more than half of all U.S. mobile traffic came from Safari.
There's a precedent for this: Back in 2012, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-maps-app-awaiting-apple-approval-2012-9">Apple replaced Google Maps</a> with its own in-house Apple Maps app. The software was terribly received and plagued with bugs-but Apple seems to have learned from its mistakes. <a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2014/06/21/apple-maps-poi-improving/">The map data has been gradually improving</a>, and Apple CEO Tim Cook <a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/09/28/tim-cook-publishes-open-letter-on-maps-for-ios-6/">eventually released an apology</a> over the new app.
Tim Cook was so angry over the Google Maps controversy that he <a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/27/apple-fires-maps-manager/">reportedly fired a top Apple executive</a> over the company's failures.&#xa0;If Apple is planning on ditching Google again, it's going to make sure that whatever alternative it comes up with is fit for purpose.

Google's Dominance Of Search Is Crumbling 

New York (AFP) - Google saw its share of the US Internet search market slip to its lowest ever mark, while Yahoo notched its highest share in five years, an independent analytics firm said.
In December, Google handled 75.2 percent of US online search referrals, down from 79.3 percent a year earlier. That score is its lowest since 2008, when StatCounter started tracking the data.
Google nevertheless remains the US leader in the search market by a wide margin, ahead of Microsoft's Bing at 12.5 percent and Yahoo at 10.4 percent -- its highest score since 2009.
Yahoo, whose chief Marissa Mayer has repeatedly stressed that the company remains devoted to the search market that it pioneered but which Google grew to dominate, only had 7.4 percent of the search market a year before.
StatCounter said that Yahoo's resurgence coincides with the start of its partnership with Mozilla, which made Yahoo the default service for online searches done through its Firefox web browser in the United States from December.
"The move by Mozilla has had a definite impact on US search," said StatCounter chief executive Aodhan Cullen.
Firefox, which is open-source and free, is reported by industry trackers to be the third most used Web browser in the world, behind Google's Chrome and Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

Compared with Lenovo’s Thinkpad line-up and Dell latitude laptops, HP Pavilion series is generally considered the better looking ones. It is the performance where all three are running for the top spot. With HP Pavilion Plus, the brand is also trying to win this round. So is this indeed the perfect enterprise and student laptop? I will explain this in my review. Price &amp; Availability HP Pavilion Plus is available only in one variant. The laptop comes with an Intel core i5 processor, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of SSD storage, and Intel iRIS Xe graphics. It is available at a price of ₹79,999. You can buy the laptop from Amazon India, HP’s own website, and select offline retailers. Design &amp; Display HP Pavilion Plus follows a familiar design language that we are accustomed to on HP laptops. Offered only in a natural silver color, it looks chic and yet minimalistic. Unlike the newer HP laptops with the revised HP logo on the back, here we get to see the good old circular stamp. On the right side there are two USB Type-C ports, a USB Type-A port and an HDMI port. On the left side it has a 3.5mm headphone jack, another USB Type-A port and a micro SD card reader. The card reader was beneficial for me since I copy footage regularly. HP is calling it a full size keyboard. However, this isn’t one considering we don’t have a dedicated number pad here. Keeping that aside, it does take some time getting used to the keyboard. Usually it is the control key that is the bigger of the two, but it’s the opposite in its case. And trust me, it’s more annoying than it seems. Anytime I would think I am pressing the control key I would end up punching the alt key. I find it very surprising that we also don’t get a ₹ symbol key on the keyboard. I have the same issue on my Macbook Pro as well. In both cases, I had to set up macros on the keyboard. Especially since this review is also written on the HP Pavilion Plus. That being said, with practice, you will reach back to your optimum typing speed, since the travel time here is indeed perfect. Also, the backlight on the keys is perhaps the brightest that I have seen lately. You have three levels of brightness for them, which is also useful for saving the battery. Keyboard shortcuts on a business laptop are a must, and HP has done a fairly good job with that. The F key row on the laptop lets you adjust pretty much everything necessary here. A quirky shortcut is an F1 key that has a smiley emoji on it. It is a shortcut to an emoji &amp; GIF menu for you to share. Something I have not seen on a laptop. Panning down from the keyboard, we have a big trackpad that takes up almost half the palm rest area on the laptop. As expected, you get some neat gestures on the trackpad. Like, pinch in to zoom and swipe to shift windows. However, they are a bit choppy in execution. When it comes to basic actions like tapping or scrolling on a page it works fine. But with complex gestures, it seems to miss out. And it does get annoying, especially when you are coming from a Macbook. I would try to view the tabs with a swipe but end up closing the page altogether. Eventually, I had to avoid using gestures. Display HP Pavilion Plus features a standard display for 2022 laptops in its segment. This is a 14-inch display with a screen resolution of 2240x1400 pixels. The display has thin bezels on three sides and a thick bottom bezel. These are textbook characteristics of an enterprise laptop. Now HP has tried to make the display for both entertainment and work. So let’s start with talking about the first aspect - entertainment. <div type="image" title="HP Pavilion Plus features a 14-inch 2.2K resolution display" msid="95145964" hostid="261" sizebytes="35432" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;HP Pavilion Plus features a 14-inch 2.2K resolution display&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> The 14-inch screen size on the laptop is respectable for watching movies and shows. I watched the She-Hulk finale on it, along with the latest episode of Andor. The color tones on the panel are accurate, and the HDR also looks decent most of the time. What I didn’t like is its low brightness levels, especially outdoors. A show like Andor, which has a ton of scenes in outer space, demands good amounts of brightness to register the action, which was missing in this one. The black levels were also slightly underwhelming - a characteristic usually associated with LCD panels. But it’s not all bad here since the audio setup on the laptop will surprise you. One of the louder speaker setups I have heard on a business notebook, the HP Pavilion Plus, can provide room-filling audio. With a matte coating on the screen, there were no glares or reflections that would distract me. The provided screen brightness is more than enough for general computing. This involves spreadsheets, emails, and Google Meet calls as well. Also, since the display comes with an anti-glare coating, there was no problem working on the laptop outdoors as well. Simply put, from a strict business notebook perspective, this is one of the better displays I have personally used. But if you wish to have an all-in-one performer, then you might be disappointed. I want to close this section by discussing the laptop’s integrated webcam. This is a 5MP sensor that will surprise you. Usually, laptop webcams are infamous for grainy pictures and poor low light performance. The unit here takes care of both of these issues to a large extent. The sensor captured better details on video calls and did comparatively better in low light conditions. Software &amp; Performance HP Pavilion Plus is powered by a 12th gen Intel core i5 processor, which is a favorite of OEMs when it comes to business notebooks. Efficiently tuned, the chipset does fare well for general computing tasks. Namely - emails, surfing the internet, video calls, maintaining spreadsheets, and accessing Google suite. This serves the core purpose of this laptop, it breezes past everyday tasks smoothly. But I am not a regular user, since my job also demands me to edit videos. And so I gave it a shot. I installed premiere pro on the laptop and tried rendering short videos that we publish on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/businessinsiderin/reels/">Business Insider India’s </a> Instagram. Do note this is a 9:16 timeline with 1080P footage shot at 30 fps and some basic transitions and graphics. And while I had some doubts about it, the performance was not shabby. A 70-second video was exported within 2 minutes which is respectable. I have tried similar renders on Dell Latitude laptops with similar chipsets and the export time was in line with those. Where the HP Pavilion Plus surprised me was the render quality. On the Dell Latitude laptop,, I observed a green tint in the exported file, which was a GPU limitation. However, here, the Intel Iris Xe graphics show their prowess. It’s subtle but noteworthy. Yes, it doesn’t mean that you can rely on the Pavilion Plus as your go-to machine for video editing, considering it taps out on 1080P resolution for editing. But yes, this is good enough hardware for urgent cuts, chopping, and a fair bit of photo editing. Also, the 16GB of DDR4 RAM on the laptop is worth noting. It makes the operations on it breezy. From boot up speed of the laptop to starting new applications, the experience is smooth. And I am talking about heavy apps like Premiere Pro as well. We get 512GB of SSD storage on the laptop which provides quick read and write speeds. I also connected an HDD with the laptop to transfer data and the speed was respectable at 90 mbps. Yes, 512GB might not sound a lot on paper, but considering most professionals are using cloud and external storage these days, it should be sufficient. For performance reference I also ran a Geekbench and Cinebench test on the laptop. Before we move on to the software experience, it’s important to highlight the battery life on the HP Pavilion Plus. And this is perhaps its strongest suite. I was getting upto 4 hours of average battery life on a heavy day of usage on the laptop. The ideal drainage is also minimal and I would generally just shut the lid on the laptop and go on with my day. Charging speeds are also favorable with the laptop charging upto 50% within 30 minutes with the 90 Whr charger. A complete charge takes about an hour and 15 minutes. Battery life is very crucial on a business notebook and HP has done well on that aspect. Now, on to software. The HP Pavilion Plus runs on Windows 11 Home, and the performance is standard. Windows 11 Home package works well in sync with the hardware on board. It is responsive and as basic as it can be. I used my usual buffet of applications that I go to on my notebooks. Instagram, Spotify, Google Chrome and Whatsapp. And the performance across them was smooth. So if you are familiar with the Windows 11 ecosystem and want a smoother performance then you are in for a treat. Considering the hardware does infact improve the performance to the last mile. Verdict HP Pavilion Plus finds itself at a very tough spot considering the price. At ₹79,999 it becomes very difficult to recommend this laptop to users without mentioning a specific use case. So let me break it down for you all. If you are someone who swears by a Windows machine and wants a reliable business notebook. Then you can consider the Pavilion Plus. It is expensive but takes care of all your executive needs. But, if you are a student or a dynamic user who doesn’t have a well-defined use case, then you can look at other options in the same price range. Maybe even a Macbook Air M1 if budget isn’t an issue.

However it said it expects to see employees appear at their “nearest Canva hub” at least eight times per year. Canva also said its global approach to team building would be reimagined to fit the new approach to physical work, with the introduction of an all of company ‘Meeting Free Wednesday’, along with work perks that extend outside of the office. “We believe traditional workplaces will become the exception when it comes to the future of work,” Canva said, adding that the pandemic has “disproved the notion of collaboration being best in one way or in one place.” In late April Australian tech giant Atlassian <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com.au/atlassian-wfh-policy-2021-4" target="_blank">announced a remote work policy</a> that would enable its global staff of 5,700 to work from anywhere in the world. The device supports facial recognition, so you can unlock the device just by looking at it, but there's also a fingerprint sensor located along the side of the device near the volume keys and the button that launches Bixby, Samsung's virtual assistant. It comes with a case and Samsung's new $129 Galaxy Buds in the box.With the Galaxy Fold, Samsung is first in a category it clearly believes will represent the future of smartphones. It's a welcome change of pace for a market that's felt stagnant in recent years, with many new smartphone models bringing incremental upgrades like camera enhancements and larger screens.But being first can come at a price. That super-sized, 7.3-inch display has a resolution of 2,152 x 1,536 with an aspect ratio of 4:2:3, making the Fold quite possibly the best smartphone I've ever used for entertainment on-the-go.It's almost as big as the iPad mini's 7.9-inch display and both larger and sharper than the Nintendo Switch's 6.2-inch screen, so it feels like the perfect device for gaming, reading, and watching video. In a side-by-side comparison, the Galaxy Fold's screen looked even crisper and more detailed than the newest iPad mini, which has a 2,048 x 1,536 resolution. But the Galaxy Fold has a characteristic that neither of those devices have: a crease that runs down the center of the display. This crease, which is where the front and back panels of the phone meet, isn't very noticeable when you're watching a movie or playing a game. But you can definitely see it when you're doing just about anything else: reading, web browsing, using social media, and checking email. I didn't find myself spending much time on this screen considering it felt too small and cramped for most tasks. The cover screen is best for just checking the time or quickly glancing at your notifications. I've tried to send text messages when the phone is folded, but I often found myself making typos, since the keyboard is so tiny.<h2>Design</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</div></div></div>The Galaxy Fold isn't subtle by any means; it essentially looks like two skinny smartphones stacked on top of one another bound by a hinge when closed. The names Samsung has given to some of the color choices - "martian green" and "astro blue" - are indication enough that this phone was intended to make a statement. But it's this unconventional design that makes it possible to cram a tablet-sized screen in your pocket. And even though it's thicker and longer than most phones, it's not as awkward to carry in your pocket as you might think. Two of my male colleagues were able to slip the device in their pockets easily without having it protrude. That wasn't the case for a female colleague, however, as the photo below demonstrates.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Business Insider/Dylan Barth</div></div></div>But it's probably fair to assume that other large-screened phones don't fit comfortably in women's' jeans pockets either - an informal study published by data journalism website <a href="https://pudding.cool/2018/08/pockets/">The Pudding</a> in 2018 found that the pockets in women's' jeans are 48% shorter and 6.5% narrower than mens pockets. The Fold, when closed, is also surprisingly comfortable to use for making phone calls since its not as wide as most of today's smartphones. Its elongated shape feels similar to that of a landline phone, making it feel natural to hold up to the ear. As much of an engineering marvel as the Fold may be (screen issues aside), there are some aspects of the design that can make it a challenge to use. It's not easy to close with one hand, for example, and I often find myself accidentally covering the speaker when holding it in landscape mode as a tablet. I also unintentionally tapped the Bixby key when opening and closing the device quickly on occasion. Because the tablet screen is larger and wider than that of the average smartphone, it's nearly impossible to type or navigate apps with one hand. <h2>User Experience </h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</div></div></div>If you're not quite sure what to do with a phone that has two screens - including one that's abnormally large - the Fold has a feature to help you put that extra screen real estate to good use. The 7.3-inch tablet screen is capable of running three apps at a time, a capability that's not entirely new for the company. Samsung has long offered the ability to run two apps at once in split-screen mode on certain Galaxy phones, so it makes sense to see an evolution of this feature on an even bigger device like the Fold. It's certainly a useful feature, but not one that I found myself taking advantage of particularly often - simply because I don't even use split-screen mode on other Samsung phones, and developing new habits takes time. But there are definitely a few use cases that I found to be convenient.For example, I was able to launch Slack and then swipe in from the right to pull up my work email at the same time, allowing me to make sure I didn't miss anything on my commute home with just two quick gestures. After checking an email about an upcoming meeting, I was able to then swipe in from the right and launch Google Maps to see where that meeting was while keeping my email and work chat up on screen.It's helpful, but in my experience, the best way to make the most of the Fold's massive screen is to dedicate all of it to a game or movie, or to split it in half for some quick multitasking. Because the Galaxy Fold is designed to be opened and closed - as its name implies - many apps translate seamlessly between phone and tablet mode. This worked well when I opened apps like Google Maps, Facebook, Google Chrome, Gmail, and "Asphalt 9." Even apps that don't technically support this continuity feature will remain open when you unfold the device. I could imagine the Fold being useful for jotting down notes or sketching considering its 7.3-inch screen provides an even larger canvas than the Galaxy Note 9's 6.4-inch display.But Samsung typically reserves the S Pen for its Note devices only. Plus, the display technology used for the Fold is completely different than that of Samsung's other phones, so it would likely take some additional engineering to get the S Pen to work. Samsung developed a new foldable adhesive and fabrication process not found on its other devices for The Fold's screen that makes it nearly 50% thinner than the typical smartphone display.<h2>Battery and Performance</h2>The Galaxy Fold may have a larger display than any other smartphone, but it also has impressive battery life to back it up. The Fold's 4,380mAh dual battery lasted for two entire days - not just the work day, but from the moment I left my home in morning to just before I went to sleep.That's certainly more battery life than I typically get from most of the smartphones I review, which can usually get me through about a day and a half depending on how I'm using them. Battery life will always vary depending on how you use your smartphone, and during my time with the Fold, I used it for checking Facebook and Instagram, sending messages, browsing the web, reading, watching Netflix, and playing games like "Asphalt 9" and "South Park: Phone Destroyer" with the brightness set to less than half.The Galaxy Fold runs on a 7-nanometer 64-bit octacore processor and has 12GB of RAM, ensuring that it's plenty powerful enough to run multiple apps at a time. I didn't notice any stutter or lag when running multiple apps, or when playing power-hungry games like "Asphalt 9."<h2> Camera</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</div></div></div>The size and shape of the Galaxy Fold's inner screen gives the phone a much larger viewfinder for taking photos than any other smartphone I've used. I often unfolded the device to take pictures since it can be difficult to see details on the phone's small cover screen. (That's also true when using the front-facing camera, so don't plan on being inconspicuous when taking selfies with the Fold). While the Fold provides a larger perspective for framing up your shots, it's also much less subtle than snapping a photo with a conventional smartphone and often requires the use of both hands. In terms of camera quality, you can expect results that are very similar to those of the Galaxy S10. The main camera system located on the back of the phone consists of a 16-megapixel, ultra-wide-angle lens, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens, and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens for zooming, as does Samsung's flagship smartphone. That means the Fold is capable of taking photos with a wider field of view than most phones and can achieve a digital zoom of up to 10x. The Fold's camera can stand up to competitors, too: in a side-by-side comparison, photos taken on the Fold were just as vibrant, colorful, and detailed as those shot on the iPhone XS Max.There's a 10-megapixel front-facing camera on the Fold's cover and a second 10-megapixel camera above the tablet's screen when the phone is unfolded. So it's possible to snap a selfie whether the phone is open or shut, although I almost always found it easier to take photos with the phone unfolded. <h2>Conclusion</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Hollis Johnson/Business Insider</div></div></div>With the Galaxy Fold, Samsung has proven that foldable smartphone designs aren't just for aesthetics or a marketing ploy, there's an actual utility behind them. If Samsung set out to create a device that can truly serve as a phone and a tablet, it's certainly achieved that with the Fold.But that doesn't mean you should buy it. The Fold is a promising glimpse at where smartphones are headed, but it's also clearly a first attempt. For a device like the Fold to truly be worth the money and time you're investing in it, Samsung needs to prove the screen malfunctions that plagued some review units are no longer a problem.It's also unclear how durable the phone will be over a prolonged period of time, since reviewers have only been using them for less than a week. Buyers will have to simply trust Samsung's word that the device will withstand 200,000 folds and unfolds even despite the issues that have emerged so far. This is why being first isn't always best, although if and when foldable phones do catch on Samsung will likely be remembered as having paved the way as it did with phablets. But perhaps most importantly, the benefits that come with having a giant screen you can fold and stuff in your pocket likely aren't worth the near-$2,000 price for most people. That's more expensive than purchasing a smartphone and a tablet separately, and it's pricier than some laptops. Samsung knows this too, which is why it's marketing the phone as a luxury product. My experience gives me confidence that we'll one day see foldable phones with more durable designs that are less expensive as well as more attractive and practical to use.
